The students have an excellent program of theatre and musical performances. The school has a national reputation. They have been asked to premier the high school version of such musicals as Miss Saigon and Sweeney Todd. The school was established in 1993 and it has approximately 300 theatre and technical theatre majors. The Academy has three theatres--a black box, the Lowden Theatre for the Performing Arts, and the Las Vegas Academy Performing Arts Center. This is truly a hidden vegas gem thats gained traction over the years with locals to the point that…read more seating fills in fast and tickets can sell out for popular shows and days of the week. You get to experience outdoor theater during the summer, in a beautiful setting surrounded by mountains in a large green meadow. They start admission at 5p but shows don't start till 8:05p in the first summer shows then 7:05p later on. The space is located in a state park so you have to get individual tickets for the show, plus admission per vehicle into the park. You often will see wild life grazing around the area, as well as domesticated animals who live there. After 5p some spaces close in the park, but for the show they often have food trucks that sell things to snack on during the show. There is also the option of bringing your own food in. Some people go all out with there set ups whether they choose to sit on the side with picnic blankets or the side with chairs. You can rent chairs when you get there, but must bring your own blankets, unless you buy vip packages. Over the years they have started to raise the prices, but its still an amazing deal for what you get. They also have started to add vip seating for an extra fee, that is reserved so you dont have to scout out a good spot to sit. Sometimes they have special menus that can also be pre-ordered. Make sure whatever seating or eating surfaces you bring are approved hights for the area you plan on sitting in. It also can get colder at night, even in the summer, so look at the forecast and make sure you bring whatever clothes or blankets you may need to be comfortable when the show starts. On days where it may rain you still have to show up if they have not canceled yet to get a rainy day ticket if it does cancle. The path from the parking lot is a bit of a walk, so if you have a good amount of items to bring, it can be helpful to have something to easily cart it around. Overall its a really awesome experience for the community to come together and experience shows that lots of love and care are put into. I would love if they could post what food trucks will be there on certain nights because I have skipped bringing food in the past just to find no trucks were coming that night. They do always have hot dogs and candy, but thats not really my jam.

The performance was great with lots of witty humor, sexual innuendos, and jabs at America's politicians. Many laughs were had! The theatre itself is small and intimate, seating roughly 40 people. Seating is first come first serve, but honestly there was not a bad seat in the house. I found the chairs to be fairly comfortable, especially with the provided chair cushions and legroom that was ideal for tall persons. No outside beverages or food is allowed, but they do have a small concession stand with a few snack options and all sorts of alcoholic & nonalcoholic beverages available for purchase. My husband and I were impressed by some of the unique craft beers they offered, so we each tried one - the total for 2 craft beers being $17 after tip. The venue appears to open approximately 15 minutes before showtime and there are clean restrooms close by, down the hall. All staff members were extremely friendly and seemed genuinely happy with the support from us theatre goers. This is a great little theatre in the Arts District! I can't believe it took us so long to finally attend a show here, but I'm sure glad we finally came. We'll definitely be back... likely next month for their spooky Halloween play!

Dancing Queen! Great…read moreshow that would make you want to get on your feet and dance with ABbA's catchy tunes from the late 70's. Although I have not seen their performance in Las Vegas (are they still in Las Vegas?) I have seen this musical 3x elsewhere. Once at the Orpheum in San Francisco in 2001 and twice at the California Musical Theatre in 2005 and 2012! Great show and funny story. The show is nothing about the band at all. I am familiar with the songs from ABba and I thought it was clever to produce a musical based on the songs and tell an original story. It is a feel-good musical featuring more than 20 classic ABBA hits you may or may not be familiar with, including "Dancing Queen", "S.O.S." "Mamma Mia", "Take a Chance on Me", Chiquitita", "The Name of the Game", "Winner Take It All", "Money, Money, Money" and "Does Your Mother Know". The cast was great... I was going to wait for an actual ABBA fan to write their 5 star review but it has been 3 weeks…read moresince the show started and people need to be informed dammit!! My opinion comes off almost like a "significant other that gets dragged to the show" but my wife is not an ABBA fan. I got free tickets through work. Also..... - I generally despise Broadway shows. "Rock of Ages" makes me wretch. - Never hearing "Dancing Queen" again would be a gift. - Not familiar with the "Mamma Mia!" story. The will call booth for Tropicana was a total mess. It was 50 people deep 30 minutes before the show. Definitely get there as early as you can to pick up tickets. We ended up missing the first 15 minutes of the show because of it. Tropicana either needs to employ more people or have an attendant weed out the people in line who are there to pick up or purchase tickets. As we walked in, the usher didn't show us to our seats. She just said "Sit anywhere! The show is about to go on again!". Ummm..okay. So I did what any person would do and took the first 2 seats closest to the stage. The place was about 70% full and it took us about 20 minutes to figure out what was going on in the story. All the performers seemed perfect for their roles and the singing was well done. The stage set was pretty basic but you were able to get the idea. I was most impressed with the live band behind the scenes. Some of the transitions were tricky and I wished I had a backstage TV a la Le Reve to see them jamming out to "Money, Money, Money" or the almost made for a musical "The Winner Takes It All". Tropicana did a great job refurbishing the theater. The makeover looks terrific. The bar upfront shouldn't serve wine in actual glasses since I heard a couple of them shatter during the show which was distracting. There was also 20 minute intermission midway through. If you love ABBA, I see no reason why you wouldn't love this show. I observed many attendees clapping along, getting pretty animated during some scenes and even reciting lines. And if you're being dragged to the show against your will by that special someone in your life..bring a flask?
