Amazing beers! Everything I tried was outstanding! The English Mild pulled though the beer engine was spectacular.

I had a really great time when I stopped into Crime and Punishment this past Sunday. My husband and I each ordered a beer and sat at one of their inside picnic tables. The beer was delicious and reasonably priced. I tried Ghost Print and Draculator in the bigger sized pours. We had some friends join us and we split the pimento cheese dip which was big enough to share between 4 people. The pita that came with the dip was so puffy and delicious. I really enjoyed the dip. Hoping I can come back soon and try some more of their beers and maybe their pickle plate. read more

A really nice nook of a bar placed on Girard Ave in Brewerytown.I've been a handful of times and each visit has been better than the last.Amongst the several breweries located in Philly, I'd place this one at the top for its variety of brews and the environment. Appropriately named "Crime and Punishment" since I felt like I was being punished by the bartender for the simple crime of visiting this bar. The bartender seemed quite put out that I was there and didn't serve me for quite some time since he was engaged in a deep conversation with a lady at the bar. When he finally took my order, he left before I could finish ordering and returned to said lady. She must have been weaving a fascinating story of intrigue or mystery to justify the lackluster attempt of serving his other customers. That may explain why he was not willing to let me taste any of the beers, which is understandable yet not a way to earn a fan of your brewery nor its offerings. In terms of atmosphere, the place seemed quaint on the inside with interesting art hanging from the walls. However it was quite cramped and from my barstool all I could see was a sink and a pile of dirty dishes staring me in the face. Is this what jail is like? Due to this and the fact that the bartender was knee deep in a conversation with Hemingway, I decided to eat elsewhere. read more

My husband and I stopped by Crime & Punishment for a beer at the recommendation of a friend and based on the stellar reviews. Brewerytown is definitely getting to be more up and coming, and Crime & Punishment is contributing to that! It's a small spot - a very narrow brewery with some bar seats and some tables, but we easily snagged a table for the 2 of us. The vibe is definitely "creepy fun" - on par with the name, it's a very dark-themed interior, but it works. They are a small operation, so they only offer a few beers per night. I was excited to try the Space Race, a beer that came highly recommended to me and was all over the Yelp reviews, but I was super disappointed to see it was not on that evening's menu. We settled for their seasonal Oktoberfest beer (it was Nov when we visited), which was standard - nothing too much to right home about. We didn't get any food or a second round, but we would love to make it back to try (hopefully) Space Race and some other brews to improve our meh first experience. Grateful that Crime & Punishment is revitalizing the area and has a cool vibe, so I'm hopeful that our return trip will be better! read more

My friend and I stopped by on a Friday for happy hour. During happy hour, Crime and Punishment offers $2 off full pours so both of us got 13 oz. pours for $4. I got the Majin Buu, which is a coffee stout. It was good, but tasted like a generic coffee stout. The place was a lot smaller than I expected and it was really busy. When we first walked in, there wasn't anywhere for us to sit, but we got lucky because someone was leaving as we were deciding what we wanted. Between the two of us, we sampled four different beers but nothing really wowed us. I'm glad I visited while I was in the neighborhood, but I really don't see myself coming back. If you're trying to experience the Philadelphia brewery scene, you are better off at Love City, Roy Pitz, or Yards. read more

This place was one of my favorites when we visited Philly. 1. The food is amazing. The menu was the perfect size not too much that you feel overwhelmed and not too small that you feel like you don't have options. We ordered the Ajika Benedict and the Mushroom Stroganoff. It was just so yummy!! I had the Mushroom Stroganoff and I think it was the best thing I have ever tasted. There is nothing like this here in California. The menu also was very vegan friendly which was much appreciated. 2. The beers were very good. We tried a couple and the Space race was very good as well as the shade of specter and behmoth. The stout was very rich and tasty. The shade of specter was very yummy and different from the beers I normally get but was very delicious and refreshing. 3. The decor was nice I thought it could have been a little more with the theme but still a very nice place. Very clean and everyone was very friendly. read more

The perfect environment for a KGB meet-up to exchange information or other friendly gathering. The beer styles are varied - stouts, IPAs, pils, berliners and all excellent and true to style. Bartender is helpful and friendly unlike those in the former Soviet who will only serve you vodka and a bowl of borscht. Food is also great. Large portions and delightfully Mother Russian. First time going to Crime & Punishment and I can't wait to go back! I've heard great things consistently about this place and it did not disappoint. I ordered the T Shirt time which was nice and light and perfect for a summer day. My dad got Modern Optics and he agreed that he ordered well too. My mom, who unfortunately is not a beer drinker, got the house white wine. Given that it was a brewery she didn't expect much but was pleasantly surprised that it was really good. We just wanted a quick bite to share and we got the potato pirogies. And OH my god they're amazing. They have this whipped light cheese and truffle oil to go with it perfectly. Definitely order them. We went on a rainy Saturday afternoon and it was surprisingly packed inside. The server and bartender were both sweet and friendly despite it being busy. The people behind us were playing the "What Do You Meme" game and it looked like they had other card games available for people. Ok - this is my 2nd visit and I had a friend come with me to check it out this time. I like the intimate space and the food menu. We decided to have the meat and cheese tray with a sample of a few brews. I tried the "Myth Of The Expert" - IPA w/infused Mango - it was a nice and smooth combo - unexpected. The next sampling was the "Space Dog"...IPA fused with pineapple - a bit lighter and easy to drink. My friend enjoyed the Oatmeal Stout and the wheat raspberry beer. We both felt the meat and cheese plate had some interesting choices - pickles, apple chutney, the cheese was funky (we were warned..LOL), but it was damn good!! The staff are friendly and so are the patrons. The space isn't that big, but it is a cool, laid back place for those who want to try some interesting beer combos. read more

I was NOT a fan of the pickle bowl. All the veggies were overly salted and there was an unpleasant raw vinegar taste. Stopped in here later on a cold, quiet, dark Monday night. All the folks both at, and behind the bar were really friendly. Toasty temps in the place from the brewing kettle earlier in the day made it extra cozy. Space Race IPA was my favorite with Zephos coming right behind it. The Luminescent Stranger Pilsner was delicious. We got a cheese plate, brisket sandwich and the deviled pickled eggs. Also notable were the clean and neat bathrooms, and they carry Pinnacle Ridge Wine. read more

If you want a sneak peek of Crime and Punishment your best bet is to follow them on Instagram. I luckily saw a post where they were unofficially opening the brewery for a few random hour one night and happened to be free. So I grabbed some friends and we got to check it out before it's officially open. One of the owners said they plan to do more of these events, haven't seen a second yet but I will be on the lookout since the beer was awesome. They eventually will have food but that won't be until they are officially open. For now they were offering three beers: Indecent Exposure (Single Hop Pale), House Arrest (Farmhouse Ale) and 100 IBUs To Life (IPA). I liked all of them which surprised me since I am not an IPA fan. My favorite the House Arrest, nice smooth finish to it. The space itself was smaller than expected and clearly still a work in progress but has a lot of potential. Can't wait for them to open but for now I'll be on the lookout for another sneak peek event. read more

Once upon a time I gave Crime+Punishment a five star review. Once upon a time me and my friends loved this place for the cool neighborhood atmosphere, the amazing food and the fun, refreshing, and ever-changing beer selection. Since my first review C&P hired a new chef and they have changed their menu. Sadly, what I've had of the new menu was a pretty big let down. I will never understand why they decided to fix something that wasn't broken. I think what bothers me most though is it seems like Crime+Punishment is having an identity crisis. It's as though they are trying to become something that doesn't fit with what I loved about them before. It essentially seems like they decided to replace their house-made bar fare type food(at a great price point) with food that's 1/2 as good and 1/2 as appetizing....but is twice as fancy and twice the price Example #1: $40 for a cheese plate #2: C+P got rid of all their mouth-watering house made sandwiches and replaced them with toast(WTF? Why would I want pork on toast when I could have a pork sandwich) #3: Furthermore, they added a bunch of boujee shit to the menu that seems complicated for no practical reason. Case in point instead of borscht they have Textures of Borscht. The menu says it's roasted and pickled beets, sour cream, parsnips, sweet and sour broth. I loved C+P's old menu because it was delicious and refreshing and surprising all without being overly complex or serious. I'm going to miss the old food and the feel of the old C+P before they took themselves so seriously. Ill still go for the beer but the food is no longer a selling point for me read more

I'm SO glad these guys pushed through the zoning board crap and are here at last! Great stuff is brewing in Brewerytown once more, and it's so, so very exciting. If they keep their opening day momentum, they'll have a crazy successful operation -- without a doubt. As mentioned in other reviews, the eight beers they had available on Saturday were all fairly priced. You could order an 8 or a 16 oz. glass. As for the actual beers? They were solid! All generally 3.5/5 stars or higher on a rating scale. Initial standouts: -Ghost Station -- This was a berliner weisse made with raspberries. Tasted just as great as the smell. All around: An awesome, surprising, refreshing beer. -Eye for an Eye -- This one was a 10.5% imperial IPA, but you couldn't tell. Least I couldn't. Big fan. -Indecent Exposure -- Another surprise. An accessible pale that I thought was one of the better ones I've had in the area. Definitely give it a shot. Also be sure to check out the Grod Inquisitor. I can't say I've had anything like it elsewhere around, but maybe that's just me. Actually, please let me know if that's just me. Really curious on that one. Can't wait to see what else they create. It's long been established that I consider the Tired Hands format to be the perfect way to construct a solid micro brewery, and in a lot of ways many other Philly breweries would agree since they've picked up people who've worked there to manage aspects of their beer operations. But outside of Ardmore I've been looking for the micro brewery that has come closest to delivering similar results in the Philly proper for awhile now! But between the beers, food, customer service, and abstract art/personality that they featured; Crime & Punishment proved to match all of my considered requirements in just a single visit! Crime & Punishment first had me with a chalk drawing of a kielbasy (hot dog?) man ushering in 2018 by the door, and continued such win with bathroom signs that warned you not to flush away hopes and dreams. But beyond that point it also featured a dynamic pale ale heavy beer list that also delivered rarer varieties like oatmeal stouts, Berliner weisses, and Grodziskies. Much like Tired Hands all of the above weren't beer flight friendly, but their 2 size options did ensure for pours that matched your preference. Another key thing for what I consider to be my best brewpubs is the food menu. and between the squash salad with pumpkin seeds & dried cranberries, and the beet salad with almond crumble and goat cheese; Crime & Punishment is one of those places that has the rare designation of being able to win friends with salad (Homer Simpson be damned! - https://youtu.be/wx59zLqBRuI). But they also featured winning things like pierogies, charcuterie boards, and a Kielbasa sandwich that featured some of Czerw's finest. Being the former cheese monger that I am; the only caveat with the menu I could give was that the brie, Danish blue, and marbled Irish cheddar that came with the cheese plate made it a little too basic bitch to be considered artisanal. But with a little love to some local cheese makers, and the continued application of the wonderful spreads and nuts that it came with, you have something that could be remedied fairly easily. Slight cheese board oversight aside; Crime & Punishment allowed me to take a Space Race to The Grod Inquisitor, and delivered enough of a ride to have me wanting to visit the extremely outside of my reach Brewerytown for more. Especially during their weekday happy hour that features $2 off beers and food specials from 4-7 PM! read more

I had looked forward to coming here for quite some time, but when I finally experienced it, I left disappointed. Chiefly I was let down by the beers. They were not serving the beers they listed on their website, but some odd ones (Kvass w/Beets anyone?). I tasted the Sour IPA and was disgusted. It was sour all right. And the cloudy mixture they called a pale ale was also sour and grapefruity--nothing like a pale. The Russian Imperial Stout was decent, but not what I really wanted on a hot day. There were only 5 beers on tap. We sat at the bar and chatted a little with the bartender, though he never seemed to warm to us. He did chat a lot with the regulars though, leaving me with the impression that this is a place for locals, and strangers get the wary eye. I'd consider coming back if I could trust that they'd have a regular freaking IPA on tap, not sour swill that I have to choke down. read more

Came here for a drink when the bf and I were in town, visiting his friends. They had recommended this place as they love craft beers, so I figured it would be good regardless. This brewery seems to specialize in pale ales and IPAs, so this would probably be a good place to go if you're into that. I'm not that into them, so I opted for their sole gose offering (the Sudden Zest), and it was pretty good. The place itself is kind of narrow, and it was pretty busy when we went in. It's decorated with a lot of pre-Soviet era Russian imagery, and of course, lots of Dostyevsky. The food menu itself is kind of Russian/Eastern European influenced, as it contained things like pierogies and pickles. We did share a plate of pickles, which were decent, though some of the veggies could have stayed a bit longer in the brine in my opinion. Service was pretty attentive, and if you happen to be near Eastern State Penitentiary, this would be a good stop to add onto your experience there. read more

This place is great for a chill beer. They have limited indoor space, a decent selection, but the service is great. I got a flight of beers and they were all delicious. I haven't had the food here, but the person I was with loved it the sandos. The employees are super friendly, they are fun to chat with, and are eager to let you try their beers if you want a taste. I'll come back, but this is best off off-peak hours like afternoon or maybe late evening when there would be less of a crowd. This place gets the Sunday-afternoon-beer-kick done. read more

Came down to the only brewery currently in Brewerytown! This place has a nice little shop with a bar and plenty of seating. They also have meals and specials. We got a roast pork roll and a beet Reuben and the House made pickle bowl. All very delicious! That pickls bowl is big though! Stopped in on a Sunday afternoon, and it was pretty empty. Really liked the vibe of the place. It seemed almost like more of a coffee shop than a typical brewery which sets it apart from other Philly options. I tried their Hazy IPA and my brother ordered the regular IPA. I wouldn't have the Hazy again. He was nice enough to switch with me, because it didn't appeal to my tastebuds. I did however, like the IPA. Didn't really want to stick around and sample anything else, but agree with other patrons that the staff was friendly enough. It started to get busy, so we decided to move on. Most of what I said in my original review holds true still. Primarily, I think it's great that there's an actual brewery in Brewerytown. Please refer to that for my general thoughts. I'm giving Crime and Punishment the extra star because the beer deserves it. After a few visits and about a dozen beers under my belt, this brewery has what it takes to standout and succeed. Most recently I had the "Interrobang" and the "Peaches and Crime." If you like hoppy double IPAs, Interrobang is fantastic. It can totally play the game with some of those rare DIPAs bad boys that like to float around Philly. On the other hand, the Peaches and Crime was light and refreshing. Not as peachy as the title would allude to, but very complex. Bottom line is that their beers have the complexity needed to differentiate themselves in a growing craft beer world. And guess what? Having Crime and Punishment in Brewerytown has gotten myself and many others into that neck of the woods, including other businesses like Spot Burger. Bravo! I'm seeing even more good things to come with this brewery and neighborhood. read more
