OhMyGarsh how have I NOT reviewed my happy place yet? Let's remedy that! Full disclosure, I taught myself to quilt at the start of the pandemic and having a degree in memory piece quilting from YouTubeUniversity is where I got my humble start. I then branched out and dipped my toe in to the vast quilting world and quickly discovered my love of bright colors, modern fabrics, fun patterns, quilt kits, and notions...and Crimson Tate has ALL of these things - and MORE! To say it is like my own personal Disney World would be an understatement - and if you get to see the Crimson Tate mascot (Heather herself) during your visit, your dreams DO indeed come true! Granted, the rest of the staff at Crimson Tate is ALSO amazing and lovely and a perfect kind of special so you are in for a treat regardless. But back to my review. Some may say the space is small - I say it is perfectly cozy with SO much goodness packed in to every corner. Pre-curated bundles and kits to take the guess work out? You betcha! Yardage on bolts? GOT 'EM! Fat Quarters in suitcases? CUTE! Scraps in bags tucked away in the corner armoire? YES! Needlepoint? THAT TOO! Tula, Charley Harper, Anna Maria, Ruby Star, Kaffe, even up-and-coming cool designers - allll the good stuff can be found here. Can't find what you need? Ask the staff! They are more than happy to help and they have given me amazing suggestions on several occasions. They even put up with me when I need a random CT hit and go in to just browse. I do not know how to sew very well but my daughter wanted hand made napkins for a gift. The staff was super helpful and patient and made me feel like I could sew anything! The store is full of inspirational quilts and ideas!! So many beautiful fabrics and patterns!!!! I am motivated to become a better seamstress just to be able to buy the darling fabrics!!! read more

I had been so looking forward to visiting this shop while in Indy over the weekend. While the staff was helpful and welcoming, I found the shop disorganized and way too much going on in such a small space. They set up the patterns and notions in different areas and there was not enough room in the store to even pass another customer. Some display ideas are cute - like the fat quarters in the suitcase - but most of the store felt like a hodgepodge without much labelling or signage anywhere. I would have loved to see more quilt ideas by the all the bundles. Would love to support this small business, but will likely be sticking to online shopping from now on. read more

I went to Crimson Tate to buy some Tilda fabric, a line not carried at my local fabric store so had no idea what to expect. It's a small shop filled to the brim with fabrics on every surface and quilts all over the walls. It was a bit overwhelming; exciting to see so many fabrics but no where quiet for my eyes to rest. The store is filled with high end fabric - basically the opposite of a Joannes store (I'm not a fan of Joannes fabric). Full disclosure, my family was impatiently waiting for me in the car, crying baby and all. Half way through shopping the texts started coming so I became rushed. The staff were super friendly and helpful. I was also interested in making a quilt and they were happy to give me all kinds of ideas and show their fabrics. They have a beautiful collection of high end brands of quilt fabrics. They also had a lot of quilt kits, most of which were on sale. No bargains to be had with fabric but the quilt kits offered good deals. Their color schemes don't match with my taste so it was hard to find what I wanted for a quilt project. At this point the texts about the crying baby in the car came fast and furious so I had to get out of there. The staff kicked into hyper speed, getting my Tilda fabrics cut and bagged. I bought an impulse quilt kit, for the Letters from Sweden quilt, with no discussion about it. They got me out of the door and on my way in record time. Here is one of my big problems with the shop- the quilt kit , which they put together, was very problematic. The quilt has a very complicated color scheme. The Crimson Tate kit used a different line of fabric than the pattern calls for - actually better quality, but the pattern requires 35 colors. CT included a chart of every color with a corresponding number (which I think they thought matched the pattern requirements)- but those numbers had nothing to do with the fabric colors of the quilt pattern. I spent hours figuring out the color matches by comparing their fabric with quilts online. They didn't have enough of one color so put in a few to substitute. And the kit didn't have enough of a few of the colors. I ended up ordering more on Etsy. I emailed them asking for help but they never responded (yes, I should have called too but I was too busy tearing out my hair figuring out how to do the colors.). Once I put together what I think is the correct color scheme and had the extra fabric from an Etsy store all went smoothly. It's a great shop in general with gorgeous high end, but expensive fabrics. For me it was over stimulating because of how crowded with fabric it was. And I remain incredibly frustrated because of the problem with the quilt kit- and annoyed they didn't respond to my email. Am I excited to go back and explore their fabric? Kind of.... Will I? Only if I'm on my own with no crying baby waiting for me in the car and am feeling super rested and able to have laser focus. Will I buy another quilt kit from them? Definitely no. read more

I went here to purchase fabric for my very first EPP quilt and Christine (I really hope I got her name correct) was SO helpful choosing fabric and figuring out how much i needed. The fabric here is QUALITY and I love that the print selection is more modern This quilt might take me 100 years but I hope I'm able to come back and show them the finished product! read more

I'm caught up in stitches for Crimson Tate! To start off - I believe it's important that you know I do not quilt. I do not have the patience for longterm craft projects. I do, however, love fabrics and discovering havens for creativity. Words to describe Crimson Tate: vibrant, bustling, whimsical and just plain ole' happy. The feel-good vibes of this place overflow onto the sidewalk. Heather Givans, the owner, is known to eagerly greet those who pass by on the Cultural Trail. You'll find everything from bicycles and ponies to clotheslines and hot air balloons on the retro fabrics. I am not a quilter but I sure do love Crimson Tate headbands and now masks! Heather's headbands are the most comfortable and durable. I've had them for years and they are the only ones I wear when I work out. I ordered the masks online and did a non contact pick up. They will donate a mask for someone in need with every purchase and each mask honors a strong woman! read more

My wife has become a fabulous quilter and when she heard about Crimson Tate, I thought it worth a road trip...check out the store and maybe grab lunch from one of the myriad of Mass Ave restaurants! I've learned a little but am not a quilter myself. The store, while small and having to deal with the angle shape of the building, was comfortable to get around for the amount of customers. Note that this place specializes in quilts. They don't have all the sewing and home decoration accessories of the big franchises. But they do have a nice collection of quilting supplies including fabrics, bundles of quarters/squares, and some patterns. Tastefully decorated, they even have some quilts mounted on the walls that you can get all the materials in the store. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable about the fabrics, designers, and sources. For items they did not carry in house, they were able to suggest websites of designers or fabric stores that have high quality to satisfy the customer's needs. Maybe they didn't have every item my wife was looking for, but she was able to get quite a few items for her next two projects and the positive experience made us both feel welcome. I did think it would be a bit bigger from the pictures, so I was a little sad there wasn't more to choose from, but that's more on me than them. That being said, they had some fabrics I'd been in search of and couldn't find anywhere online. They also had the full line of a few hard-to-find fabrics that made it fun but difficult to choose from colorways! I went here on a whim when I had a few hours to kill between a conference and my flight out and left with a little bag of goodies to sew up when I got home, so it was basically the perfect little stop. We were at a family reunion and I needed a quilting break! While others went on a boat, I went fishing for fabrics. The minute I spied this place from the car, I knew I would love it. And I did. With all my heart. Heather was just a doll, the customers are even cool and the fabrics. Oh my, the fabrics! Such a fabulous assortment - such fresh and different choices. I literally felt like my head would explode if I didn't buy everything in the store. Well, that's an exaggeration, everything my VISA would allow me to have. I got two great patterns, and yards and yards of cottons that make me happy just to look at. I made my first project from my haul here and it was just terrific. This store is stuffed with fabric, patterns and notions. If you are tired of the same old stuff, you need to drop into Crimson Tate for some fabric and inspiration. Heather and David are super friendly and will help you with your fabric selections, which as a newer quilter, I really appreciate. I have taken a English Paper Piecing class at the store and that was wonderful and recently our guild had Heather present a workshop. She graciously shares her talent and enthusiasm for quilting and it's contagious. If you are visiting Indy, Mass Ave is a great street for grabbing lunch and poking around in stores. read more

This store blows me away! I've been going to fabric and quilt shops in every city I've been to recently and this store is by far the best. Great selection of quality fabrics, wool felt, notions... Lots of unique stuff I haven't seen elsewhere, including Fabric.com and my "home" store in Santa Monica, CA (and Sewing Arts Center is excellent). The owner is a fabric designer and has a great selection. Highly recommended! The neighborhood is cool, too, so you can do some walking around and have fun, so the trek downtown is worth it. read more

The who: Heather, awesome spirited, ray of sunshine and knowledgeable seamstress/ textile mistress extraordinaire! On Mass Ave and next door to another new fave: White Dog. The fabrics here are to die for. Girlie heaven that makes me know that in a former life, I was one hell of a berry picker, captivated as I am by the fab colors, textures and patterns. Pretty sure heaven is decorated with some of Heather's fab fabrics. Really want sewing lessons, and evidently she gives them. *sigh* Go there, it's a scrumptious eye feast. I used to know how to sew back in the day of home ec in middle school. Back then, I loved being able to create so many cool things with just fabric and thread...but it was years ago and I've since forgotten how. Then I walked I to Crimson Tate last month and my face looked a lot like this emoji and immediately my need to make something was rekindled. They have a truly wondrous collection of fabric from cute to chic to kitschy, all arranged across the little shop in rainbow order (major thanks from the OCD side of me). I took a beginning sewing class here and it was a lot of fun. Not the easiest thing that I've ever done, that's for sure, but I walked away after 2 classes with a pincushion and a pilowcase that I made myself. Heather is a great instructor and she stocks a variety of super cute fabrics. She has a bubbly personality and seems genuinely interested in all of her customers. The sewing class I took only had 5 other participants so we each got plenty of attention from Heather and her assistant. Parking is usually plentiful at that end of Mass. The store is on the Cultural Trail so, of course, there are also plenty of bike racks. Check it out the next time you're on Mass! read more

Amazing, a quilting store within walking distance of my house! My friends roll their eyes and acknowledge quilting as just one of my many old lady tendencies, so I was encouraged to meet owner Heather and realize there are other hip young quilters out there! The store is great. No longer will I have to make a 40 min drive to pick up thread or needles when in a middle of a project. Fabric is a bit more expensive than my usual fabric stores (starting at $10/yard), but she has a selection of unique, modern prints (from designers like Denyse Schmidt and Amy Butler) as well as a special African print collection. The selection is not huge, but it is a start! If you need inspiration she also carries a bunch of cute patterns. The shop also offers classes for all levels of sewing and quilting. Heather seems committed to creating/reviving the quilting/crafting community in downtown Indy, and invited me to come down anytime I need help or just want to work alongside other quilters. I will be back often. I just need a little red wagon to pull my sewing machine along. read more

Stopped in to find fabric for an apron that I'm planning on making and it was wonderful! I loved the vibe of the store and the wonderful fabrics that they have. I've been lectured in the past by my aunt and grandmother who are avid quilters, that the quality of the material is what makes beautiful projects, and the quality of the fabrics at Crimson Tate is phenomenal! I don't have a great eye for colors and patterns, but the folks at Crimson Tate spent about 20 minutes helping me pick out the fabrics for my apron and I am really excited to get started on my project. I only wish I had more time for fabric projects so I have an excuse to come more often! I'm hoping to make time for some of their classes this year. read more

I can't believe I haven't written a review about my favorite place in Indy! I moved here from Chicago almost 4 years ago and randomly walked in one day. That's when I met Heather, the store owner, who greeted me warmly and let me browse her wonderful shop! I found out about her beginning sewing class, and that was how it all started! I took class after class and bought my own sewing machine, and am really enjoying creating and sewing garments, bags, quilts, etc! Since then, Heather has become a dear friend, sharing her warmth and laughter. She attended our wedding, and her shop has been my refuge in Indy. I'm not sure how I would have survived without her shop and beautiful fabrics. She carries my favorites - Japanese fabrics (Nani iro double gauze, echino, hello kitty!!) and Liberty of London (the tana lawn is so so soft!). She also carries all sorts of yummy modern quilting cottons. Likewise, her shop has bloomed and she has added wonderful people to work with her (David, Jenny, Melissa before the baby!, etc!!). She's now a fancy fabric designer, and it's been so nice watching her career take off and her shop become more and more successful! It makes me sad that I'll be leaving Indy and my favorite local quilt shop, but I'm sure I will be visiting her virtual shop online for years to come! Besides the awesome selection of unusual fabric and vintage décor, the best thing about CT is the fun and friendly staff. You can tell they love their shop and product. It bills itself as a a quilt shop but the colorful an unusual print fabric can certainly be used for all sorts of projects. How excited was I when I found out about Crimson Tate a couple of years ago. I can't believe I haven't taken the time to write a review until now! As a child of a seamstress let me tell you that I used to loathe going to the fabric store (think big box fabric stores). The first time to wander into Heather's store years ago was when my mom was visiting. She always needs to get her fix and check out any fabric store that she hasn't been to yet. I will say that we were impressed from the beginning. Although the store is small in size, the amount of unique fabric choices available is amazing! Heather was there to greet us with her cheerful personality and helpfulness. She carries patterns from many of the smaller companies (no Butterick patterns here). We were able to find a pattern for an awesome purse with cool fabrics to make it with. Please note that there are samples made with many of the patterns available so you can see what it will look like in real life. Love it!! Even though I could have made this purse on my own (my mom made it for a birthday present for me), they do offer classes to those who want to learn how to sew. I have friends that have taken beginning sewing and quilting classes at the store and have had great experiences. If you currently sew, this is a great place to venture to for patterns, notions, fabric and good times. Heather even has her own line of fabric now that is available. I used to pass by this cute little fabric store on Mass Ave and wish I were more crafty. Well, I still wish I were more crafty but I'm one step closer having just completed their 2-day Sewing 101 class! Heather and David were helpful, knowledgeable and so much fun. I used one of their sewing machines for the class and took home a pincushion and a pillowcase. I was very proud of myself :) They have tons of cute patterns, lots of kits for making your own bags, clothes, etc and classes/groups for all levels, and of course their popular Indiana Love pillows. I think the fabrics are a bit on the pricier side but they really are beautiful with a huge assortment. I hope to get back and hone some more crafting skills! read more

This is a fun little fabric store in a great walking neighborhood. After I bought a yard of vivid yellow and lavender rose fabric (love at first sight--my favorite way to fabric shop), we walked around and bought homemade ice cream and checked out an independently owned used book bookstore. We listened to a panel discussion on 'The Handmaid's Tale' and bought a CD. A fun few hours and all because of that great little modern quilt fabric store. They don't have a ton of different fabrics, but what they have is gorgeous and there are a lot of other things to look at there as well. read more

The second I walked into Crimson Tate, I was blown away by the magical colors. The employees were so approachable, since i know literally nothing about sewing. There are incredible fabric selections for every aspect of life. I have an eye pillow for yoga from Crimson Tate and every time I use it, it gives me LIFE and makes me so happy!
