This has been my go-to yarn store for years! I drive from Cincinnati 4 or so times a year and it's always worth it! I spend wayyyyy too much money when I'm here but I always walk out with wonderful yarn for several projects as well as a billion ideas!!!! It's an inspiring yarn shop! If you're into fabric arts this shop is practically paradise. Susan and her staff become friends after a few visits--go here, ask for advice, and you shall receive! They have everything a knitter or crocheter would need, and if it's not in stock then they'll order it for you. I've never been to a knit shop with a better collection of buttons, either! You can easily spend hours looking and touching everything. For those of you looking to pick up a new hobby, this is a great place to learn. Beginner classes helped me make my first sweater without too much confusion and meet a lot of cool people. $75 for unlimited Wednesday night help is such a bargain when they teach you any skill you need and let you keep coming back after your project is done. read more

Mass Ave Knit Shop is a knit (and crochet) lovers heaven! I find it impossible not to get lost in the thousands of skeins of yarns available at Mass Ave Knit. Upon walking in you are greeted with a wall of color, staff, and usually a handful of fellow knitters helping one another with various projects. Trips to Mass Ave for me tend to be few and far between, but only because each visit requires picking up 6 - 8 new projects and a healthy chunk out of my checking! I simply cannot resist the vibrant colors and the the soft merino or plush alpaca. This is absolutely *the* store to visit for anyone who loves the fiber arts. I grew up watching my Grandmother knit, and always had a desire to learn. After teaching myself the basic knit and purl and completing a scarf I headed over to Mass Ave for one of their overnight knits. The cost is $20 plus a dish to share and Susan, the store owner, buys Bazbeaux Pizza for all attendees. These overnight knits are more than worth the twenty for the socializing and picking of Susan's brain. She's a wealth of information along with any of Mass Ave's staff that attends. Through these overnights I've branched out from my plain scarves to hats, mittens and even learned to felt. (I plan to take Jane's sock class very, very soon!) Everyone at Mass Ave I have met from staff to customer is incredibly knowledgeable, helpful, friendly. Truly they seem to find so much joy in helping their fellow knitters. I'm telling ya, once you see this table and the badass women surrounding it, you'll be a knitting convert in no time. I've crocheted. Once. I learned just so I could make my father a blanket for Christmas and haven't touched it since. Not for any particular reason. However, after my brief visit at the Shop, I have to say that my mind is swirling with ideas. They have their own designated parking lot to the side and behind the building. A couple of my friends and I decided to take a basic knitting class at Mass Ave Knit Shop about a year ago. My grandma taught me to knit when I was about 10, so I thought I would be a natural. I was wrong - there was a lot more to it than I realized! Regardless, we had a great time in the class and by the time it was all said and done, I ended up, with a full sweater -- one neck, one trunk and two sleeves of different sizes! All the mistakes were my own, and luckily, the staff helped me fix them and I ended up with a somewhat normal-looking sweater in the end. Our instructor, Susan, was awesome! We loved working with her because she was always very encouraging, even when we screwed up time after time. The price for the class was very reasonable, but the yarn tends to be a bit expensive, especially for beginning knitters who aren't sure if their projects will end up looking good enough to spend all that money on! However, they do have a sale room, full of clearance-priced, high-quality yarns that are worth checking out. Mass Ave Knit Shop is a great place for expert knitters, as well as those who have never picked up a needle before in their lives. Wow soooo much color texture it was sensory over load. Yarns from acrylic, silk, wool, alpaca, sheep, cotton and every color of the rainbow. It was fun to walk around and just listen to the women in the knitting circle talking and laughing. If I worked there my OCD would take over and I would be organizing things all day. The yarn selection is interesting, a good mix of hand-dyed & basic staples. They carry a variety of textures as well, from single ply to soft, light chained. Also, excellent parking. I am not giving 5 stars because the service was pretty dreadful. Inattentive in the extreme, short, terse responses to questions, and active encouragement to remove my mask. The staff were basically a part of a large (unmasked) group of knitters who clearly knew one another well and were chatting away about politics and history at a volume that filled the store. Any request for assistance meant interrupting the party and feeling every eye staring at you while the staff provided a monosyllable. Knitting groups exist at many LYS but I've never felt so dismissed and unwelcome before. I'm hoping this was just a bad day - I'll update if I visit again. In the meantime, I'd definitely order online to support the store. read more

I've been to Mass Ave Knit shop on several occasions and I've been less than impressed with it. Let me say that first, the owner Susan is very nice. She's friendly and outgoing and it's clear that customer service is personally important to her. When she has been in the shop my experiences have been pleasant and I've received help when I needed it. However the majority of my experiences were when Susan was not there. When she's not around it's the difference between night and day, the customer service is almost non-existent in that place. I never know who is working, there's usually a group of women sitting at the table in the middle of the main room knitting and none of them acknowledge my presence when I enter the store. It's hard to find things sometimes because the store is absolutely massive. Which is great when Susan is there because she knows where everything is. But when she isn't and I'm not sure who works there it can be hard to find anything. When I'm ready to check out I'm standing by the register for what can feel like ages before someone gets up from the table to ring me up. They make it seem like they would much rather have me leave without buying anything so that they wouldn't have to stop knitting. I think name tags or shirts for her staff might be helpful. And I think that Susan would be really unpleasantly surprised if she had a mystery shopper come in to the store when she wasn't around and tell her about their experience. When I enter a yarn store I expect a bit more from it than other places. I want to be greeted by a staff member so I know who to ask questions to. And when I'm ready to leave I want someone to come ring me up, or to at least tell me they will be with me in a moment, not leave me standing by the register for 5 minutes. I have actually left my yarn on the counter and walked out before because I stood there waiting so long and I was on my lunch break. I got to the point of shopping at Mass Ave only if I had to. If I wanted something and could wait I just bought it online. Now I have a yarn shop about a mile from my house and that's where the majority of my fun money is spent. It's sad because Mass Ave really does have the potential to be a yarn mecca, if the customer service was there consistently. I'm only giving it three stars because the selection really is massive, but the atmosphere pretty much cancels that positive out for me. read more

Can I just say that I was completely overwhelmed when I walked in here? And I mean that in the best possible way. It was warm, homey and inviting- I felt like I was in my grandma's house. I became instantly obsessed with MAKS the moment I stepped in. I probably spent over an hour scouring over every ball and skein in the place! And that was before I discovered the sale bins in the back room :O There's also a huge assortment of buttons/embellishments lining one of the back walls. The ladies around the tables in the center of the store were eating lunch and knitting and just having the best time and I wanted so badly to just plop down and join in the fun! They offer a lot of classes and in-store events! I am a weaver, but I have been itching to learn to knit, so I may be signing up for one of these in the future! I went to Mass Ave in August of 2009, when I was in Indianapolis for a wedding. This was the only store I visited in Indy. The Good: The store was HUGE, to the point that I stopped in the doorway and said "Woah" when I walked in. I had to look around to decide where I was going to go first, and said "Wow" numerous times while walking around. They had a large selection of patterns and accessories as well as yarn. They a decent selection of sock yarn, which is what I was there to buy. The Bad: Because the store is so huge, it can be a bit overwhelming. It also makes it difficult for the staff to notice when people come in. I was in the store for over 20 minutes before anyone spoke to me, and that's only because I overheard another visitor telling a staff member that she was from my area and went to talk to her. I also had to wait at the checkout counter for someone to see me, which makes me think that the staff wasn't aware of me at all while I was in the store. They were, however, talking to the group of regulars at the knitting table. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect to be greeted when I walk in a yarn store. I feel that yarn stores are supposed to be friendly, helpful, welcoming places, regardless of whether you're a regular or a visitor. It bothered me that they let me wander around so long and never asked if I needed help. I'm small, so I don't know if they just didn't see me or if they thought I was young and not a serious knitter or what, but I left disappointed with the experience. I seriously considered leaving without buying anything, but I didn't think I'd have time to find another store. I gave the shop 3 stars because of the selection, but service was more around 2 stars. When/if I go back to Indy I will find another store to visit. read more

This is where I replace lost doublepoints, buy more art yarns than I can afford and get inspired by the growing selection of adventerous patterns similar to those found in Rebecca or Dominknitrix). Drop in if you want to talk, work or buy knitting, crocheting or felting stuff with the super-friendly staff, the owner or other store patrons. (You can even talk spinning, but they don't carry supplies for it...) There's a gigantic work table in the front room where most people gather to work. Plus there are other work tables, a couch or two, lots of sample projects and a huge, separate class room. On my last trip in the washer / dryer was being put to use -- there was some felting going on! The crowd here hovers around middle-age / older than me, but the Broad Ripple location that's opening soon will probably help draw out the younger crowd. Final notes: I learned how to not twist my purl stitches (sort of!) here a while back, at $5 per lesson. And did I mention there's a mens knitting group? How cool is that! read more

OK, I have a thing for yarn...and Mass Ave Knit Shop is where I go for my fiber fix here in Indy. You may be dumbstruck as soon as you walk in by the sheer size and scope of their selection. Don't be intimidated - jump right on in and get lost in shelves upon shelves of amazing yarns, stacks of pattern books and every other fiber artist doo-dad you can think of. Then there's the community table - sitting in the center of it all is a LONG table piled high with projects at every stage of completion. You'll find on any given day 2 to 10 people working on something, talking about the latest yarn to hit the shop and answering people's questions (including yours, so don't be shy). I love the Mass Ave Knit Shop. It's one of my "happy places" here in the city...check them out and make it one of yours! read more

I'm new to knitting, but have started attending the biweekly Ravelry get-togethers at Mass Ave, and just love the place. It's huge, and stuffed to the rafters with kinds of yarn you never knew existed! It's not just on the shelves or the trees either; look down and you'll find it in baskets, look up and you'll find it on spindles on top of the shelves. It can be a little chaotic and strangely laid-out, but somewhere they'll have just what you're looking for (even if you have to hunt up an employee among the yarn). Susan herself is hard to miss, always moving, always talking; I've heard that when she sits down long enough she knits like a fiend! The staff and the atmosphere are MUCH more friendly than Knit Stop on the north side, and more geared to us plebians. :P Eventually one of their overnighters will happen on one of my free weekends, I hope, because they sound like a blast. read more

I really love this yarn shop! I stopped in on a school trip, and a woman immediately came to help me. She explained how the yarn was organized, so I could find what I was looking for. Very helpful! Both times I've been here, they had an amazing selection of yarn on sale! I was able to get a skein of silk for just $5! Amazing! I try to stop in whenever I'm in the area, which mostly means when I'm passing through Indianapolis. The store also has an amazing selection of buttons, displayed very well and so fun to look through. There are always women in there, sitting around and knitting. I wish one day I had the time to join them. I was a little disappointed to not find any interesting crochet hooks, which I collect on my travels, but they had plenty of standard ones, which I just wasn't interested in. Overall, this store is very nice, that atmosphere is friendly, and I will continue to enjoy stopping in. read more

I just love this shop. The selection of fiber is huge and I can always find something new or that one color that I have been looking for. The inventory of sock yarn is the largest I have ever seen. While they do seem to emphasize self striping sock yarn, the still have a great variety of solids, tonals ad now even some speckled and hand-dyed sock yarn. I don't get to visit often since i don't live i Indiana, but when I make it to Indianapolis, this shop is always on my list of places to go. read more

This place is a must-visit for the wall of buttons alone! Cue perfect insta pic! Tons of yarn selections and a staff that's willing to help find exactly what you need. I was visiting the shop with my sis-in-law and she's an avid knitter and I was a bit out of my element, but having never been here before, I would definitely come back if I needed anything that they have. My sis-in-law was able to pick out some really rad buttons for a hat she was knitting and also took some inventory of the different types and brands of yarn that they offered. Never in my life did I think I'd be one of those ladies with yarn and knitting needles in her purse, but after one visit to this store, I'm hooked! Upon entering, I was immediately greeted and offered assistance. Once I explained that I had never knitted and was only just browsing as part of a window shopping walkabout Fountain Square excursion, the lady in charge still took the time to explain the store layout and classes offered. Upon hearing about a beginners class and seeing the sweater that is the class project, I became interested. When I returned to the class, I couldn't have been welcomed more warmly. Such an amazing group of ladies and an incredibly patient teacher. Guess what? I can knit!...sorta, well, I'm getting there. And wow, do you have any idea how many different types of yarn they have? Solid, multi-colored, sparkley, sequined...and the list goes on. Amazing project examples hanging everywhere for inspiration and lots of pattern and instruction guides. Plus, I get the impression that there's always a group of ladies in the shop knitting so if help is ever needed, a quick stop into the store should get you back on track and on the way to finishing your project. One note, if you're buying a knitted sweater, scarf or hat at a store and you think it's too expensive, it's probably not. Yarn isn't cheap! Depending on the size of projects you intend on making, this could become an expensive hobby. read more

Relaxed, come-as-you-are ambiance and huge inventory. They don't carry some of the trendy luxury brands (no Noro, for example), but you're guaranteed to find something you can't go home without. Or at least that's how it works for me. It seems chaotic at first, like Alice fell into a Yarn Wonderland, but there is method to the madness. Yarns are organized mostly by weight... bulky yarns together, sock yarns together, and so on. It's makes for convenient browsing, but it threw me at first to find Kidsilk Haze Trio three rows over from Kidsilk Haze. Clearance items are in the separate room to the side, and while that room really is chaos, it's never bothered me -- thrill of the hunt and all that. Like other Yelpers have mentioned, it can be hard for newcomers to tell who works here, especially if a knitting group is chatting at the center table. I sometimes feel guilty for interrupting the group to check out, and I've never quite felt at ease interrupting to ask, say, if someone knows the pattern for a shop sample. Random tip: They have a great sale after Christmas, the perfect time to stock up on yarn to see you through winter. read more

I'm pretty new to knitting and until my recent adventure at the Mass Ave Knit Shop I had not bought yarn outside of a Joann's...I am not an expert on yarn shops. Going to a real deal yarn store was intimidating to me, but after getting a few simple projects under my belt I plucked up some courage and went to this fine establishment. I was sooooo relieved that not a single person assualted me with customer service and questions to expose me as a knitting noob. The place seemed like the type of store I would run...jumbled up mess, but orderly! I'm afraid now that I have been to a real knitting shop that the much closer Joann's is not going to cut it for me anymore. I worried I was asking too many times for help but as I was sitting at the wonderful knitting table, I watched as about ten other customers walked through the door and immediately said, "Help! I have a big problem!" and they were met with a huge smile by Susan (the owner) who happily helped them solve their problems and the customers all walked away feeling grateful and more skilled as a knitter. I always come to this shop when I visit my parents in Indianapolis. When looking at all the sample projects they have, I always find something I want to make when I come here. I think the store is pretty well-organized, with yarn generally grouped by weight. There are exceptions to that rule, but that's the basic idea. Every time I've been there, someone has greeted me, and the store owner almost always speaks to me at some point if she's around. I think the selection is lovely and they have a ton of options from classic dyers you can find in the states like Malabrigo, Mad Tosh, etc., but also yarns that I saw in Europe but generally don't find here as often.
