I came into the shop looking for Fray Check, which they didn't have. For probably the best reason that if you properly sew your clothes, you don't need to worry about fray. One of the clerks looked it up for me at Walmart, even gave me the aisle number. All of this was wonderful, but the real reason for the review would be their lovely fabrics. I am the least skilled seamstress that ever existed. I gave up sewing long ago. If someone would have put effort into selling me something, I'd be the fool who'd buy something beautiful to turn it into a three car collision. The most beautiful fabrics. read more

I am a sucker for a locally owned / specialty type quilt shop and have been meaning to get in to the French Seam for a while - but they were never open when I tried! I totally understand that Covid has forced us a lot of businesses to adjust their hours and the way they run - and the French Seam was no exception. Luckily, I had a day off work recently and was able to get in on a weekday during their limited business hours. Let me just say this - they have some gorgeous fabrics. Quilting cottons are separated from the garment fabrics in the small front area and they have a few notions available. I love being able to look through pre-cuts and they had a good selection of fat quarters organized by color in rolling carts available for purchase. I was also told that there was a 'clearance' area in the back/warehouse type area - so I made a break for it (you had me at clearance!). Back there I was able to score a package of fat quarters for $3 (I was told it was because they were 'old' fabrics - but who cares?) and some other pre-cut yardage at a discount. SCORE! Back in the open 'warehouse' type area also appears to be where machines are located and perhaps where classes would be held (pre/post Covid). Of note, I think I may have thrown off the older, more conservative appearing lady working in the store with my appearance when I walked in, but the younger gal working the counter was very sweet. Overall, I was excited for my new-to-me fabrics to add to my stash and glad I got to check the place out as it is SUPER close to where I live. read more

Expensive, even more so than Moda Fabrics - their Riley Blake lines, etc. I found it warm and cramped inside, and a bit confusing as to what was where. They had a really small sign outside on the building such that I thought they'd closed down. read more

I absolutely love this local gem. I am expanding my garment sewing skills and they have everything I need. They stock beautiful fashion fabrics and sewing patterns as well as quilting patterns and fabric. I could spend hours looking at all the buttons and notions. The staff is very knowledgeable and has pointed me in the right direction every time. read more

My wife and I stopped by to check out this fabric store near 96th and Hague. Since we live on the southwest side, it was our first time discovering this place. My wife is a very skilled quilter, but doesn't consider herself much of a seamstress. She can fix things, but rarely creates her own clothing from patterns. Well, the shop has the two types of fabrics separated! Note that this isn't a big box store, so the space is somewhat small. (There is a workshop area in the back that I've read they use for classes.) What is appealing is that you don't see the same stuff you find at the big box places. There were lots of high quality bolts (my wife found one that was $85 per yard!) that a skilled seamstress/tailor could have used to make a suit. But because the supply is limited, my wife didn't find anything on this occasion to purchase. We also did not see any "sale" items as mentioned in another review. The shop also has some yarn, thread, buttons, patterns, and sewing related items for sale too. Quilters have a great selection of modern, bright fabrics along with blenders, and garment sewists have beautiful prints, linens, patterns, etc. Good selection of sewing machines, and even some great quality yarn. I love the selection of fabric, accessories and classes they offer. I was a little rusty with my sewing skills and took Intro to Modern Sewing (nice, big classroom). In class I made a pillow case, apron, and a tote bag (my family couldn't believe the quality of the bag). I would recommend Deb (instructor) as she was very patient and detailed! The reason for the one star deduction was the owner can be abrasive - especially if you're in there at 4:50 PM and purchasing items. Maybe hire someone to stay later since night classes are offered. It would be nice to purchase last-minute items right before class without being rushed. Overall, if you're a sewer, this is a good place to checkout. read more

This is a wonderful store! Very good quality fabrics and a nice selection of specialty patterns. The staff was friendly and helpful. It was definitely worth the drive from Chicago. Once we get through Covid, I would love to take class or two. I ended up buying fabric for a quilt online after my visit and the service was excellent. Small but mighty store, I loved all the selections they had here and everything was top quality plus really fresh. You pay for quality and I am willing to but amazingly enough, I found really terrific sale items. I haven't made anything I got from here yet but I was so impressed I went back twice in three days. I have this darling skirt pattern and delicious fabrics for my granddaughter but she won't need it until next summer. Their selection was small, however everything they had was top notch! The French Seam is one of my favorite stores in Indianapolis. It's a good thing that I live on the south side or else I'm sure I'd drop a small fortune here on a weekly basis. Some things to know... This is not Joann Fabrics. If you're looking for generic, cheap fabric, you're not going to find it here. If you're willing to spend a bit more per square yard and want to see different fabric (many of which you'd typically only see online), this is the place for you. read more

My mom had been asking to take her to this store since her last visit to Indy. She is an avid sewer and keeps on top of the smaller, more personalized fabric stores in the midwest. Her original impression of this store prior to us setting in the door was that it was supposed to have more specialty garment fabrics. Unfortunately, there were more of the cotton quilting fabrics and very little specialty garment fabrics. After we got over our initial assumption, we set in to looking at what they have to offer. I will say that they have quite a few different patterns that you would expect to find at this type of store (Amy Butler, Olive Ann etc...), but they also had some vintage Vogue patterns mostly from the 40's and 50's. The fabric selection was pretty good for the cotton patterns and they do have some other fabrics available. They don't have allot of notions, mainly buttons and elastic. They do offer classes and the ladies running the store are super nice. If you are on the north side and are a fan of stores like Calico Corner and Crimson Tate, then this store will be right up your alley. read more

Love this place- I can't say enough about how wonderful they are! I was on business travel to Indy, and owner/manager Courtney made special last-minute accommodations for me to come in for sewing lessons during the weekend. I was fortunate enough to get Mary as an instructor, and she was wonderful! She paid close attention to my engagement /understanding of lesson content; when I got something, she moved on quickly, but if I needed extra explanation, she noticed right away and reiterated until I was ready to move on. The combined experience in this store is a gold mine, and I'll be returning as long as I'm sewing! Thank you all for such a great customer experience! read more

I just went to the The French Seam for the first time today and I was downright GIDDY to find a new fabric store with such awesome prints. The selection is fantastic for such a small little shop and the decor is really cozy and warm. I know I like a print if I have the urge to run screaming with it in my arms, like a 5 year old with a new puppy. There were several bolts of fabric that I wanted to squeal and run with today. I bought a neat little bobbin holder that I so desperately needed to contain my sewing room clutter. I am now planning my next project's pattern so I can rush back and buy a few yards of wonderfulness. This place could be dangerous for my checkbook (but I don't care!!! EEEeeeeee!!!). read more

The French Seam is a breath of fresh air for serious garment sewists! No where else in the area can you find the European imported linens, voile, wool, silks, and knits that they sell. High quality notions too. Some may balk at the price per yard, but the superior quality is worth it. While working on my husband's historical coat, I had to redo the shoulder and sleeve seams so much I was afraid I was abusing the fabric too much. Not so! The high quality goods survived even after the repeated times of sewing. I have always found Courtney and Linda, along with their wonderful staff, very friendly and helpful. Their store reminds me of the great stores we used to have in the area when I was younger. I'm so grateful they're in town! read more

I am a fashion design student who attends the Art Institute of Indianapolis, and my instructor advised our class that we check out the french seam store. He told us that there will be a special guest from France, she specializes in lace making. Note: I work the weekends, so I decided to check the store out on my 30 min lunch break. So, I walk into the store, barley greeted..and gravitated to the lace displays. There was an assistant, younger girl who seemed helpful. I asked the young lady a few questions, and then asked her who is the owner of this lace. She pointed the woman out, this woman from France didn't say a lick of word to me. However, one of the store employees was doing all the talking, and it was too much for me to ask for a business card. She was very rude, and didn't want to assist me. The French Seam store won't ever get my business, nor this lace-making woman who is from France. After leaving the shop, I felt like I didn't accomplish anything.
