Y Worry Farm is definitely the second group. We went on a beautiful October day with our 3-year-old, and it was less than 30 minutes from downtown DC. We loved it: beautiful pumpkin patch, lots of folks but didn't feel crowded, a fun corn maze, and a real "farm stand" feel to it. Definitely recommended for folks with little kids who don't want the craziness of some other spots. No admission fee (for some other places this can be $25 per person!), so you don't feel like you need to stay for hours and hours, and everything was reasonably priced. Great family fun.

Generally I always walk away with something. Usually 20 vendors or more and the list of vendors is posted on FB so I follow their page to check on when my favorites are there. Parking- is easy even with a full lot, its on their property with almost no need for walking. Very close. Accessibility- okay for stroller that have bigger tires, maybe less for umbrella strollers. It's all grass so wheelchairs may be hit or miss depending on arm strength. Bathrooms - Portapottys are available. Only negative is as a bunny mom I didn't love they had bunnies out on display for the kids and didn't have a cooling bottle (frozen bottle of ice) to keep the bunnies cool. This is not uncommon especially for a farm. I gave them a cold bottle I had. Afterwards I never saw the bunny out since I'd been back so perhaps they took heed? Either way this is a great market and a consistent family outing. Highly recommend to anyone.

My search brought me to Gorman farm, which is very close to my home. I arrived to the farm to find beautiful expensive berries that were pick that day. I hesitated to buy them, but I was excited. I got them home to find fragile berries underneath the top berries. Quite a few berries had to be thrown out. Whether they were moldy or were home to bugs/slugs. I ended up cutting a lot away from the berries, trying to savage them. I am not sure I will give them another try pre-pick is $4/pint, $8/ quart, or self pick sign said $6/lb. Pretty steep!

You're interested enough to read a Web site about food? Go buy from people growing food in Howard County at the newly-rejuvinated farm between Rte 29 and U.S. 1. (UPDATE: My friend went today, and someone at the farm said they're not open for business yet. Definitely call ahead if you're going to drive a long way.) Lydia and Dave Liker have leased the farm on Gorman Road, and they sell produce just in from the field. This is about a mile south of the Harris Teeter in King's Contrivance. Much of the Liker's produce goes out through their "community supported agriculture" program where people paid $550 for weekly boxes of vegetables from June through October. But you can pick up fresh vegetables by stopping at the farm and buying from the Likers -- or from Dave's father, who helped me buy on Saturday. I saw a new sign for the Gorman Produce Farm on my way to the Savage library. The sign doesn't really say that you can buy vegetables there, but I drove down a gravel road to the signs that say "park here" and "produce here." Inside a building were plastic tubs and boxes full of vegetables -- squash, basil, cabbage, green beans, eggplants, chard, and on and on. I broke out my "emergency" $20 bill, and I bought carrots, kohlrabi, squash and lettuce. They're beautiful and delicious. The vegetables are not certified organic, but the Likers say on their Web site that they grow everything according to organic principles. That works for me because I'm skeptical of government "organic" labels -- just like I'm skeptical about the government labels for "local" produce. Why not believe a farm where you can look around yourself? You can meet the farmers most days until about 6 pm. The CSA pick-up is Thursday, and they say people can pick up until 6 pm. Dave Liker said that the gates on Gorman close when they're closed for the day. His father pointed out that it's a working farm, so there are times when people drive up and the Likers are too busy working to make a sale. Gorman's prices seem about what you pay at the Howard County farmers markets. Tomatoes should ripen in a week or so. Corn is on the way. The fields are just going to deliver more and more through the end of the summer.

Nonetheless, this was a nice (albeit small) collection of local vendors selling some great looking/tasting produce, meat, baked goods, honey and SALT (I'm a sucker for salts). Many of the vendors were the same as those you'll see at the Anne Arundel County Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings. On the downside, this market is in the parking lot of the Annapolis Mall which is the most depressing of settings (in my opinion, of course) -- local vendors selling local produce amongst the most commercial of chains, like Applebee's and Panda Express, places that use commercial, flavorless produce in their food. The juxtaposition is not lost on me. I'm not trying to be snobbish, it's just that I feel a lot more "at home" when some grass is visible during my veggie buying spree. Nonetheless, I highly recommend stopping in and picking up some salt samples and produce. Nothing is better than a fresh, homegrown tomato or sweet ear of white corn as a vessel on which to try your newly acquired salts. Once you try it you'll thank me!

I've gotten herbs, and a Maryland Farmer's cookbook. I'm a huge fan of the Triple J farm eggs there. They are pricey $3.99/dozen, BUT unless you have a hen house handy you won't get fresher eggs. Once you try it, you will never want to buy eggs from Giant or Safeway again. Because these guys were smart enough to situate themselves within walking distance of a bank, this makes it very convenient for us to get cash (or more cash if we see more stuff we like) from an ATM. They get an extra star from me for making an effort to be convenient.

We ran down this morning for the inaugural launch and they did not disappoint. Criteria for vendors at a Freshfarm Market include, that you must be located within the Chesapeake bay region and you may only sell what you have either grown or made yourself. With that said, there is a definite slant towards sustainable and organic product of high quality. Today's offerings included: Quail Creek Bakery, Cherry Glen Goat Cheese Co, Flower vendors, Springfield Lamb, Local produce featuring early tomatoes, mini cucumbers, herbs, sweet cherries, asparagus, strawberries and much more. We also scooped up a delicious homemade gazpacho and mushroom empanadas for later. Local favorite, Chef Jim Wilder of the Wild Orchid Cafe was on hand for food demonstrations. We watched as he prowled the market for his ingredients but were unable to stay. There is plenty of room for expansion and we have hopes that as the season progresses, even more vendors will join in. The market is open Sundays only, June 1 - October 5. 8AM - 12PM.
