This Indian Grocery is larger than most. It has spacious isles, is well organized and lots of fresh produce. The staff is friendly and helpful. In addition to the usual items, there's a moderate amount of stainless kitchen utensils. They have a large freezer section for modern family with everyone working outside the home - sometimes you simply don't have time to cook. Plenty of free parking.

So good, there is not much left. I think this tastes like a great coriander chutney with mint; just a LITTLE spicy.

My wife and I became aware of the Big Bazaar during my periodic internet search looking for Indian foods. We mentally filed away the location, then one day in Laurel, we stopped in. During our visit, the store was mostly empty of customers, one young male attending the checkout register. He was helpful in finding the green and black cardamom pods I sought. We did a bit more looking and I found the Patak's curries and picked... always a joy. Then I came across an interesting looking bottle of "National Green Chili Sauce". This stuff is REALLY good. While it is described as a chili sauce, I find that it is reminiscent of the good coriander and mint chutney we commonly find near the start of a GOOD Indian buffet line. I uploaded a photo so you aficionados can find it. The bottle looks a little worse-for-wear, but that is because we have been regularly hauling it to the table as a delicious condiment for many foods. I'll go back to the "Big Bazaar", if only to find that National Green Chili Sauce again, but I must admit, like other customers, I could NOT exit the store before purchasing four of the homemade Samosas on the checkout counter.

I found my favorite Indian snack at a great price.

Good selection of snacks and frozen foods. Limited produce section, but great prices. This place is far less expensive than other Asian markets. The homemade samosas are really tasty. The customer service is great. I will definitely be shopping here more frequently.

Huge & Tasty Samosas with either Mango Chutney or Tamarind and Date Chutney. Couldn't decided so I bought both...lol

This is the one of the exact reasons that I moved from Upper Marlboro to Laurel- for the vast variety in shopping. And Big Bazaar is definitely a winner. I came across this place while looking for another store. When walking into Big Bazaar be ready for a fabulous surprise around every corner. This store is very bright and clean and very organized. I am not familiar with Indian food and spices but I have no problem testing and trying something out. Like my momma always says " You won't know until you try it" and so I did with many things from this store. I just grabbed a basket and roamed from aisle to aisle picking up anything that caught my eye. I found this really tasty Lychee drink, some tasty frozen cheese filled parathas, spice soda (this is definitely and acquired taste- think of it as a savory masala soda, but I just had to try it), some natural shampoo and facial cleanser. I believe some of my roaming around aimlessly looked like I needed a tour of India and that's what I got. The beautiful & gracious owner, Lavanya, came over and introduced herself. She walked around the store and answered all my questions. She explained the uses of many of the different spices to the natural remedies you can create from them too. She was full of so much useful information that our conversation lasted over 10 minutes. Now I must warn you, once you have filled up your basket and are ready to check-out you will walk towards the front of the store but before you get to the registers there is a table to the right full of homemade Indian treats, one of them being a huge and tasty samosas filled with curried potatoes and peas I believe. These badboys are so big and only 99 cents. So originally I bought 4 samosas. Once I had checked out at the register, I went to my car, put my groceries in the back seat and sat in the car. I was curious of how good the samosas were, so I decided to take a bite. And then another bite and another bite. All I know is that the 1st samosa was gone and I was like I have to go and get some more. Now don't judge me, I mean I ended up purchasing 10 samosas, but they weren't all for me, ok maybe 3 will be for me, but they were absolutely wonderful. Once I was home I turned my oven to 325 and heated up the samosa which gave the pastry a crispy texture, a little dab of the mango chutney or the tamarind & date chutney I bought and me and my family had a delicious afternoon snack.

This spot has so many wonderful food stands. Upon walking in, you can pick up a cart to explore all of the stands. My kids love this place as much as me since you can find so much variety. Our first stop is the very busy Amish soft pretzel stand. My kids love the standard soft pretzel dipped in melted butter and topped with rock salt. My personal favorite are the stuffed soft pretzels like the pretzels stuffed with roast beef and cooper sharp cheddar. Nothing tastes better! There are also many other stands that offer fresh produce, meats, cheeses and baked goods. I particularly like Bieler's Donuts, the same place you'll find packed lines in Philadelphia right here. It's such a fun place and my kids love it. But most importantly, this is dad's spot!

Using his wits, his ingenuity, and unparalleled levels of skill and perseverance, Aatami Korpi, who earns the moniker of "the man who cannot die," escapes not just bombs and machine gun fire but a plane deployed as a missile. And yet, the most moving moment of the film is not found in one of its many arresting action sequences but in a single line of dialogue, spoken by one of six Finnish men, who, along with one teenager and one boy, carrying hatchets, axes, and tools, interrupts the battle-finished Korpi's work on his new home to ask in Finnish, subtitled in English, "We thought you might need some help?" Speechless and shaking with relief and joy, Korpi watches the strangers get to work on his roof, walls, and foundation. That level of kindness, assistance, delight, joy, skill, and service can be seen in every vendor at the Dutch Country Market Thursdays through Saturdays at 9701 Fort Meade Rd in Laurel, MD. Whether it is homemade pretzels, pasta salads, chili, produce, meats, cheeses, popcorn, donuts, or varieties of dark chocolate, candy, or fudge you seek, you will find plenty to whet your appetite. My search brought me to Gorman farm, which is very close to my home. I arrived to the farm to find beautiful expensive berries that were pick that day. I hesitated to buy them, but I was excited. I got them home to find fragile berries underneath the top berries. Quite a few berries had to be thrown out. Whether they were moldy or were home to bugs/slugs. I ended up cutting a lot away from the berries, trying to savage them. I am not sure I will give them another try pre-pick is $4/pint, $8/ quart, or self pick sign said $6/lb. Pretty steep!

You're interested enough to read a Web site about food? Go buy from people growing food in Howard County at the newly-rejuvinated farm between Rte 29 and U.S. 1. (UPDATE: My friend went today, and someone at the farm said they're not open for business yet. Definitely call ahead if you're going to drive a long way.) Lydia and Dave Liker have leased the farm on Gorman Road, and they sell produce just in from the field. This is about a mile south of the Harris Teeter in King's Contrivance. Much of the Liker's produce goes out through their "community supported agriculture" program where people paid $550 for weekly boxes of vegetables from June through October. But you can pick up fresh vegetables by stopping at the farm and buying from the Likers -- or from Dave's father, who helped me buy on Saturday. I saw a new sign for the Gorman Produce Farm on my way to the Savage library. The sign doesn't really say that you can buy vegetables there, but I drove down a gravel road to the signs that say "park here" and "produce here." Inside a building were plastic tubs and boxes full of vegetables -- squash, basil, cabbage, green beans, eggplants, chard, and on and on. I broke out my "emergency" $20 bill, and I bought carrots, kohlrabi, squash and lettuce. They're beautiful and delicious. The vegetables are not certified organic, but the Likers say on their Web site that they grow everything according to organic principles. That works for me because I'm skeptical of government "organic" labels -- just like I'm skeptical about the government labels for "local" produce. Why not believe a farm where you can look around yourself? You can meet the farmers most days until about 6 pm. The CSA pick-up is Thursday, and they say people can pick up until 6 pm. Dave Liker said that the gates on Gorman close when they're closed for the day. His father pointed out that it's a working farm, so there are times when people drive up and the Likers are too busy working to make a sale. Gorman's prices seem about what you pay at the Howard County farmers markets. Tomatoes should ripen in a week or so. Corn is on the way. The fields are just going to deliver more and more through the end of the summer.

Class Produce is a distributor that carries organic as well as conventional produce. I am considered a "cash customer" (even though I can pay by Visa or MasterCard) since I purchase as an individual. Twice a week, I receive a spreadsheet by e-mail of current stock items and prices. Pick-up is Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m.--12:00 noon, and the order must be received by the close of business a day ahead of time. Some pointers: -most deliveries come in overnight on Sunday, so the best day for pick-up is Monday. -check your produce on-site or as soon as you get home. Class will not issue a credit for items 24 hours after pick-up. I've had 3 small issues (fruit that wasn't optimal) since I started ordering from here, and Class was quick in resolving the situation, but the first time that I called, I did not know that I had a 24-hour window. -the warehouse is in Jessup right next to a new car storage lot, and it can seem a little bit confusing to navigate your first time there. Back your vehicle into one of the loading bays to the right of the entrance (the bays here start at #16, I believe), and go into the office (you need to be buzzed in) to verify your order and pay. -a weekly CSA (conventional and organic) is available for a good price, but I haven't taken advantage of this yet. The staff at Class has been professional and friendly--I like working with the front office employees as well as the warehouse guys. Loading assistance is available if you need it. Am I saving money? Yes! For example, the first pomegranates of the season just arrived last week. I paid $55 for a case of 36 (about $1.52 each). Organic pomegranates at WF are $2.99 each. Most everything is offered by the case, but there are a few items that come pre-packaged (e.g. dozen-counts of avocados, apples and pears). I wish that another family would share in ordering with us, so that I could buy more vegetables, but we definitely go through the fruit. When I order a case of organic bananas ($24 for 40 lbs), we'll let some ripen and freeze the rest for smoothies. Over the summer, the peaches and berries were a hit. In all, I highly recommend this place if you have a family of 5 or more (or want to share a produce haul with a friend). The fact that I can pick up organic produce from a distributor before it sits on a grocery shelf for who knows how long is wonderful. If you try it out, let me know what you think!

The prices appeared a little high for some items, but as the adage says, "You get what you pay for". I purchased mostly produce. The navel oranges and pink grapefruit were huge. They were also deliciously sweet and juicy. Before going to the checkout area, I moved along to other areas of the store and found consistency with the level of cleanliness. I ended the visit in the area with health supplements. In my opinion, the selection was relatively extensive for a grocery store. I was able to find what I needed and then walked to the checkout lane. Many of the items purchased were either on sale or discounted with the store's rewards member card. I've seen the name, but honestly I thought it was just a dispensary of sorts. Well I have been humbled. My sister is huge on crystals, essential oils, incense, and the like. When I went to NY most recently I was inspired and have started dabbling in certain crystals myself. When a ring broke from dancing too hard last week (literally) I looked up crystal shops and this place came up. And I was like... they have crystals?! So when I had free time, I made my way over there. A short 10 minutes from my house is this serene house with a waterwheel fountain and so many colorful plants. There's just a few parking spaces right outside, but there's more across the street. The porch itself is inviting too... and when you step inside, it smells like one of the shops my sister loves. I found myself just exploring through everything... crystals, body care, supplements, herbs, teas... even a library! And the prices... the prices are fantastic compared to what I've seen at other places! I found myself in awe at it all. They even have a rewards program! Safe to say, I got what I needed, and if you need any of the items I mentioned above, consider paying them a visit. You won't regret it.
