BUT after sitting for 15 minutes and finally giving up on service and heading to the bar ( where the one person serving asked if we had already been helped - WHO do you think helped us ?? Santa Claus ) . She clearly did not want to work!! We were told that the kitchen was closed - at 6pm!! JW - update your website or heck just a sign at each restaurant to let people know the status! It's not that hard and the waiter we did end up with told us that various restaurants close each night depending on occupancy?! Spent Memorial Day weekend at JW Marriott for a staycation and it was an amazing time. The Crooked Branch is in the middle of all the action here at the JW and the vibe is causal and chill. The staff is extremely friendly and makes you feel welcome enough to have a drink at your leisure while kicking back in the comfortable chairs. With live music in the background, this was the perfect place to recap our fun day and watch other guests come and go. Smiles were abundant and laughter was in the air. Even though we visited in May, the Texas heat did not discourage us from sitting in front of the fire place and decompress. We did manage to have dinner here one night and the sushi was delicious to start. With our main entrees of the Karaage Fried Chicken & the Pork Belly bowl not only hit the spot, but after a fun day floating down the lazy river, it was the right combination to end our night. Had a couple of drinks here, the vibe is nice and the drinks are strong. Totally recommend this place, the only drawback, which I find common in most resorts is the service can be slow, but if you go straight to the bartender they will take care of you. Located at the JW Marriott at the lower floor. The actual bar is large, but the sitting area included several sofas, many tables & chairs and I saw a few pool tables to enjoy. Facing the back side opposite of the bar you'll find a stage area and a dance area. That evening included a country western duet that were quite talented. The high ceilings, tall fireplaces are impressive and grand which make the acoustics sound great. We enjoyed a few beverages and music before dinner. The Crooked Branch is a great place to people watch and the band that evening played late into the night. read more

The perfect place to have drinks and appetizers at the Hill Country JW Marriott... When you walk into the hotel head down the stairs to the Crooked Branch and find a place to hang out. They have more than enough seating inside or outside if the weather is nice. Great beers on tap and check out the cocktails also. Came here with my boyfriend on a weekday afternoon. It wasn't very busy at all. Generally, the service was okay. It actually took awhile for our server to take our drink order and food order. There was also a moment where I was still eating our appetizer and the waiter took it away without asking. Typically, a server really should ask if you're done before clearing your plate for you. The food was really good. We got their pretzels, flatbread pizza, and a salad. Also, their cocktails were good as well. After our lunch, we walked around outside a bit. Current Avios rewards member and family members with Marriott platinum elite customers and we love the resort, but have recently been turned away from Crooked Branch Restaurant and Bar with a valid TX State issued ID. Recently did a float trip in San Marcos and lost a phone and ID during the river float process. We still wanted to get dinner and Drinks with Friends, but I had to use my alternative form of ID which is my state issued Texas License To Carry since I'm in the waiting process for my Drivers License replacement appointment. When trying to discuss the situation I was turned down and given the run around about the manager stepping out for 10 minutes which then turned into 20-30 minutes and still no restaurant or bar manager in sight. I simply feel my means of being a recurring customer wasn't appreciated or valued. We've stayed at this resort many times for family trips and trips with friends and have never felt as dissatisfied or inconvenienced as we were tonight. Hoping to receive better customer service in the future when deciding where to stay for our next family/friend outing. Rating for the current experience will be a 1 out of 5, but would be a 0 out of 5 if possible since we waited long without a manager meeting outside and lost appetite over frustration. Other hotel staff and concierge were very helpful and accommodating so nothing against them, I just simply wish the dining experience would've been better than the situation that had played out. read more

I came here to eat with co-workers after setting up for our conference. The restaurant had a few guests spread across the place and there was only one waiter. I know she was doing her best, but we were all hungry and had to wait almost an hour and a half to get our food served. It would have been nice to know what was going on or at least tell us that there is a delay. I ordered the fajita steak salad and it tasted bland. While staying at the JW Marriott we had a drink vouchers for 2 free check in drinks. We just ordered orange juice since I was with the kids. The bar service is great but I can't say too much for the able service. They told us to have a seat since we were going to order something for dinner. We waited 30 minutes and had to hunt down a person to take our order. We tried to wave someone down but they kept walking by us. Finally my son yelled at a lady out loud. I was begin get hangry by this time. When you see someone pass your table up to serve a table that just seated you will be pissed. Mickey finally came to our table. Took our order. We ordered : pretzels..this was delish. A tad too much salt but it was good. It stated t would come with beer cheese and mustard. It only came with mustard. chip and dip...amazing. We ate everything and she gave us more chips. Caesar salad with grilled chicken the chicken was very dry. The salad was ok. It was missing something flat bread pizza. This was ok. It wasn't a great choice. It had too much going on and missing something at every bite. My daughter said it was terrible and had no flavor. I did like the fresh avocados on top though. We did order too much food and ended up taking it back to our room to eat as a mid night snack. All in all Star rating. 1 star for facilities 1/2 star for food 1/2 for service - star for over all experience - for rest rooms did not use. I would stick with the bar if you want to order. Our service was underwhelming- I think they were just understaffed because she was friendly but disappeared. The waits to order and for refills were long. The atmosphere is nice, the hotel is beautiful, and our food was great! The green hummus was a great start. Chicken Caesar Salads and quesadilla to split was a great idea! At first glance I was not smitten with this bar opening toward the hotel lobby. But in the evening on weekends the energy is lively, live music fills the air and the drinks are pouring. While staying at the hotel we stopped here for a night cap a couple of times in the evenings. The hotel offers a variety of entertainment to include live music at the Crooked Branch. The live music had the perfect backdrop as it was in front of the Christmas light show outside! Each bar and restaurant at this hotel has their own wine, beer and cocktail list. While Cibolo Moon is more cocktail centric and Velocity is beer centric Crooked Branch is well balanced with beer, wine and cocktail selections. I ordered a Sauvignon Blanc and Jesse a local draft and we took in the the light show and live music. They have billiards and some comfy leather chairs around the corner. This bar gets rather crowded when they have conventions and other events. If you are looking for a change of scenery and are a sports fan, make your way over to Velocity. If you are looking for fancy cocktails in a warm environment make Cibolo Moon your next stop. read more

Enjoyable, expansive and expensive. Every evening the environment evolves from an empty escape to erupting with an euphoria of energy. All of the drinks and food items are top shelf, but the selection is disappointingly limited giving that the bar if flanked by a restaurant and a bar with more selection. The service is greatly impacted by the tide of customers. I was there for a week and the service ranged from stop hovering to I think we are in the lobby (great to none). Our table spent several hundred dollars per evening drinks, so it seemed bizarre that there were times when we couldn't get service. The seating is great because you can go from chatting with the bartender to sitting on the couch and then head outside to enjoy the fireplace. All in all it was great. read more

The bar-staff is super friendly and informative. They even accepted our welcome drink vouchers and made some great margaritas. My problem is the price- you don't really get good deals (though drinking here is way better than ordering by the pool areas); There are a lot of local restaurants, chain restaurants, and SPECS in very close range that you can get a lot better quality and bang for your buck. Meike took great care of us. Got here early, and the tequila bar wasn't open, so we settled in at the Crooked Branch. She worked it out so that she could eventually serve the menu from the tequila bar and we would not have to move. Probably not in line with hotel protocol, but 100% good for the customer service score. We had some great team building time, and can highly recommend the "burnt tips".
