I've been a member for years! I love the classes. The instructors are excellent! The atmosphere is very welcoming! My favorite classes are line dancing and zumba with Debra as well as MJ's water zumba. My favorite swim instructors are Lisa and Lorraine. If you're into yoga Jodie is excellent. Parma gives a good cardio sculpting class as well.The support staff are friendly and helpful. The cleaning staff do a wonderful job of cleaning. The Y really helps me maintain my health! I came in to take advantage of the $0 joiners fee which can range from $55 to $100 if addition to the membership fee that you're expected to pay when you initially sign up. My son is 10yrs and is able to get a membership of his own for only $28/month!!!!!! What a deal!!! The process was quick. No paperwork needed from me which was a first. This review is for the registration process and facilities. I tagged along with my daughter to register my grandson for swim class and the many other activities offered. We were first greeted by the receptionist (Lucner). He was very informative, patient, professional with a pleasant disposition. Listening to the information he provided my daughter with, grabbed my interest. I plan on registering before the deadline (Oct 14) to take advantage of the joiners fee waiver. They offer a multitude of activities, classes and even have an early childhood program. The facilities itself appears to be well kept. Equipped with two swimming pools (that I saw) locker rooms, showers, exercise rooms, courts, outside tennis courts, track, vending machine. While the registration process seemed a bit long, I am assuming they only had one person because it's not their high season. The lady who handled registration was very nice. I will update with my experience. Oh and there is plenty of parking. read more

My son just completed his first set of swim lessons and we are pleased with the results. He has improved a great deal and is looking forward to the next session, to continue learning. The instructors are patient but they also challenge the kids. They provide good verbal instruction and physical cues/examples too. Each session is 45 minutes, which is plenty long without seeming like things are dragging on. read more

I cannot recommend this place. They were so disgusting and unprofessional. The only manager that helped me was Bharaeti. The management especially the swim manager Lisa rolls her eyes and does nothing when your complaining about something. I was there for six months it's crowded and people have no decency or respect they just jump in your lane and don't even ask or tell you first. The good lifeguards are George and Henry everyone else is horrendous. There's kids everywhere bc they're trying to make money from classes so as far as you having a nice calm swim good luck. There's always kids and noise it's never relaxing. I left the jk pool which is where the kids always are and went to the bigger pool and the kids were there I'm in a lane and this man who runs a swim group bought along his five friends and said nothing to me but stared at me as they stretched. Another patron told me get out cause they're going to "trample you" were his exact words. I got out and I was disgusted how they just took over and jumped in. Not even a thought that maybe I wanted to just finish up my swim. It was bad. Buyer beware and I did tell you....you won't get a care or respect level from patrons or management I promise you. read more

I left my house keys and i called the Cross Island YMCA to see if i left my house keys and the lady was like does it have a Pink String on it. And i said Yes. She was like okay. When You come you just have to show your ID I'm like what does my ID have to do with anything. So, i did not have my ID on me. So i went to the YMCA and i saw my keys on the desk and she was like what color are the keys.My keys had covers on them. So she was like you don't have no form of ID nothing. I'm like No. She was like okay. So I'm like so your not going to give me my Keys at all. She was like I just want to make sure that i'm giving the keys to the right person. I'm like but I'm the only person that called for keys. So my father came in she was like can i see your ID. He gave his ID to the Lady and the Lady was like you have a different last name. I joined via the web bc there was a promo waiving the initiation. I was a little hesitant bc of some of the reviews but I really wanted to get back into the pool (previously used the Aquatics Center at Flushing Meadow but wasn't super enthused to go back). My first time the front desk and member services were quite attentive and helpful (a busy Sunday afternoon). Got my card and a tour and was on my way (so thank you all!) I found them very friendly which goes against some reviews. So far have used several pieces of cardio equipment, I'm an avid runner and found the treads in good shape, ellipticals and arc also. Also was happy to notice the track around the tennis courts to get in some good outdoor work as well. Have only swam in the small pool thus far and found it to be fine. I didn't realize the second locker room was downstairs near it so walked through from the other but was fine. Overall a good experience thus far. This is a Y not an equinox so that is what you are getting as far as the experience but I think I will be happy here. read more

So this place was a complete waste of time. When you walk in, the place is super packed with people just standing around and waiting for their kids to finish swimming. But apparently to the old rude lady that works at the front desk and should be lucky to have a job at her age. Only the people using the pool can get a guest pass. She Said that if you want to use the gym or cardio room you have to join. You can't get a guest pass. So basically you don't get no time to find out if you like the place. Also there's a huge fat girl that works there as well and just lounges around talking shit about people with the useless old lady. I was in a good mood and was ready to workout and join. Until the shitty old lady and huge fat chick ruined that. it's not worth a 100 dollar sign up fee and 61 dollars a month for a membership. Which I think is way to high for the YMCA and this place. WORSE experience EVER. I joined to YMCA this Sept with high hopes of learning to swim since my 18 year old daughter learned 14 years ago there but I was extremely disappointed in the instructor of this Beginners adult swim class. Not only did he not go over the basics prior to starting the class of BEGINNERS, he did not pay attention to the ones that needed the help most. I made sure to be in front of the life guard so I was not going to drown while he attended to the ones that were able to excel in floating. If you couldn't do the basic moves right away, you were on your own. Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel that as a new swimmer in a class for NON SWIMMERS, It is unreasonable to tell a class of 9 students with 1 instructor to float face down within 10 min of the first class. I cancelled my class after one class and they didn't even refund me the money of 125 dollars. read more

I love this place so much and even has great people, They're excellent and i go here everyday.

I feel the cost for 2 weeks of camp is too high. 2 weeks = $670. All they do is just going to the playground (I have only heard my child say one time through-out the entire 2 weeks session), arts and crafts all day everyday in the same room, and 2 sessions of pool that last for 30 mins each. I expect they will at least have more activities like basketball, or baseball, because they have all the spaces right there. Other camps will at least go to libraries, do some mini sessions of cooking/baking, intro to some outdoor sports for $800 - $1000, 4 weeks! Summer camp at the Y? NOT WORTH IT. I gave 1 extra star just because the staffs are nice. read more

Good pools and programs , but the staff at member services are not all on the same page and record keeping is terrible,papers get lost and no one knows who did this or that because they weren't at work that day or this shift , and calling to get someone in charge is useless, no one knows when the person in charge will be there or what his or her schedule is ... must get better systems of record keeping and staff must communicate better .. read more

This place is ridiculous we were told we could be added under our parents family plan we needed to bring them in we brought them in then we were told only one of us after we made sure and asked the first employee if we both could . So fine we said we would sign up as our own family did all the paperwork ( had a promo no registration fee) now time to pay we were told we would pay 35 dollars now on 1/5/19 and then 117 dollars on 1/15/19 they are charging us daily up until the 15th and that's what the 35 dollars would be .... honestly the place is old and dirty and no one working there knows what there doing and they take hours to go through paperwork I was only joining since it's walking distance ... the ymca is non profit charging an arm and leg for what ? read more

This review is based on my 7-year old summer camp and after school camp experiences. I will rate each one separately for a better view. Please note that this poor review does not include the Early Childhood program. ---Summer Camp (Summer 2010) 2 stars The team sports camp have a bit of different sports that kids would like to do and for variety I would give them a 5. However, the final score I can give is maximum of 2 1/2 because of a few experiences we had this summer; below are a few. First-- The nature of the summer camp is that kids spend much time outdoors. One day, my son suffered from heat exhaustion and I found out that he had not drank any water. The Y does have water breaks but I feel that they did not enforce the kids enough to use them. I am unsure as to how much responsibility a 7-year old to remember to drink water should he have when he is busy having fun. Regardless, we lost a week from the camp till he recovered and was not even reimbursed in terms of extending his stay for that an additional week. Second-- Today (8/13/10), my son's school bag was stolen from the men's lockers and so was his prescription glasses. They did not ask parents to bring locks for lockers (and when I spoke to them, I got mixed review) as I was told it is our responsibility (but never mentioned to me or written) to bring a lock while some other staff indicated that locks are a big problem for kids who forget their combination which is why it is not mandatory. As a result, locks are optional. So while he was swimming, someone stole his backpack with all his clothes and sneakers as well as glasses which cost over $300. They seem not to like to take the responsibility and I had to insist that they also check their cameras and see if they can find out who may have done it as the bag is identifiable because it isn't too common. UPDATE (8/14/10): Yesterday night I personally went to the locker rooms and asked the custodian in charge to check the adjacent lockers that were locked to see if my son's stuff is there. The next morning before we went to the glasses store to buy a replacement pair, my wife checked and the locker was still locked. We got the locker clipped and found everything of my son's stuff in there. Has I and my wife not taken action in our own hands, we would have either never gotten our stuff and certainly spend needless money on a pair of new glasses with same prescription. I don't know how my son's stuff got locked but I still stand behind my poor review. The summer person in charge did nothing to help and I felt that I was an annoyance to him. Overall, I felt that to them I seem to be just an inconvenience and I will have to be insistent and see what results can be made. This last incidence is what drove my to sign up and write a review. We will not be using the Y and some of the recent reasons are listed above. I feel mostly relief that we have 1 more week paid and we will not use it again and a bit regret because when it came to getting physical activities which is also important, they did have a great deal to provide. Still. I feel that the cons overweight the pros. ---After school Program 2009/2010 2 1/2 stars You get what you pay for and in regards to price it isn't bad. However, the kids counselors are not teachers but I believe college students who seem to have good grades and in general are responsible. Having said this, the reason I give a low score is once again from experiences that we have First-- They have had a bit too often problems with their buses and on numerous occasions they picked him up over half an hour late...the school was not too pleased with this. Second-- One day, they completely forgot to pick up my child and the school once again called. No one in YMCA noticed until the school called them. Third-- Although they are great at physical activities (including swimming) in all seasons, I feel that they are weak in academics. They do not provide teaching as they are not teachers but when they go over my child's homework I find it not all done (they started to inform parents that they can't guarantee this) and at times done incorrectly. From the above factors, I have now placed my child in another after school program that is purely academically inclined and will have to figure out other means for his physical activities. ---Early Childhood Program 4-5 stars PLEASE NOTE: The Cross Island YMCA does have an early school program and my son was in it. I believe that this program deserves 4-5 stars so please don't look at my negative review above and base it on their early childhood. The staff is run by a different department all together and I considered them to have been a great experience for my son and myself. They teachers and assistants are friendly, cared and I feel did a great job getting him comfortable and prepared for kindergarten. read more

Diana, the swim director is really helpful. The swim instructors are great. The place could use renovations and I wish they could clean more often. This is unfortunate I have to write this review. I was hoping that I had found a great place for my 9yo son to learn swimming...but due to records not being updated timely (and I do not know who was responsible for this), it has now been two sessions that my son was not able to register for his level, because it keeps saying "Prerequisite not passed." I was told in person that my son did pass, and he should have been able to register for Level 4. Well actually I sat in front of my laptop until 12am Sat to register him (since Sat was the first day of class registration for members (non-members register for classes a week later). It is known that it is first come-first service for an extremely limited amount of seats and hours, and especially on the weekends, which get filled ASAP. Anyway I had come in last week to try to make sure that there would be no blocks and my son could register, but it looks like i wasted my time with that, as well as sitting here until midnight to try to get a spot for this class. The Y has been a home away from home for my daughter and me. My daughter started there when she was 3 years old in the daycare and then the UPK. The staff there were phenomenal! The structured program and keeping the children busy helped my daughter to really grow into a wonderful young adult. Staff were very patient with her as a child. The Y has SOOO many programs, both free and paid. I have taken many of the free programs and depending on what you enjoy, there's something for everyone. My daughter has taken many of the paid programs , ranging from swimming to piano. What they offer is comparable to private lessons, but she learned just the same. The hours are good too in that they are open early enough for those who want to workout before the workday and stay open late enough for those who like to workout after work. i do wish they would open a little earlier on the weekends! The place is always clean. The staff keep cleaning the areas, especially in the locker areas and pool. They just renovated/freshened their look and changed out the exercise equipment. So I know they're putting the money back into the business for their members. I enjoy the events they have throughout the year. As another reviewer mentioned that this is a family oriented place, so if you have a family or just plain being around adults and children, then this is the place for you! read more

I have to say...getting back into the gym routine is not easy! My wife and I have plans to go away this June so we want to be more toned by then. Last year, we went to a gym in Fresh Meadows with an annual contract. That was such a pain since some months we were away and weren't able to work out there. I needed to find a place that 1.) Did not have an annual contract and 2.) It wasn't the boring treadmill, weights, back to treadmill, cool down, more treadmill, protein shake and weights. I wanted to go to a spot that was closer to my house and came across Cross Island YMCA. My wife and I sat down with a coach and even had a tour. Let me tell you...there are a lot of things to do here..basketball, track, tennis, pool, martial arts, dancehall reggae dance move, weights, zumba, yoga, racketball..I am missing about 5-7 other activities. They have parking in the back. This is our first week and so far so good..workin' up a sweat. Soon we'll have to buy our own tennis rackets and play tennis early in the morning. Oh yeah..they have month to month memberships. If you will be away for a month..you can freeze your membership. The place is clean, the membership is affordable and I'm so glad it's closer to home. read more

I have been a member here since 1995. Both my boys learned to swim here (tip. in addition to swim instruction class they have to practice what was taught to improve). They also played basketball here through jr Knicks. Excellent program. Both my boys went to their summer day camp and my youngest when he became old enough became a counselor for 2 summers. My wife and I have taken the following classes over the years: Spinning (amazing instructors and music. Different instructors have different styles and fitness levels), Kickbox Aerobics (intense workouts), Yoga (amazing. special classes for seniors ), Boot camp (Challenging workouts), Zumba (my wife loves it), Aerobic Classes (will work your body). Since i retired this year I decided to take formal swim lessons. I have taken 2 swim classes. When I first started I could barely complete 1 lap and only knew how to swim freestyle. Now after 16 weeks I swim approximately 22 laps in 30 minutes using freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke. I also learned how to do the side stroke, dolphin kick and tread water. (tip-in addition to the 1 hour class I practiced 30 minutes two times a week). The weight machines, cardio machines and spin bikes are great. They update them every 2 or 3 years. The facility is well maintained also. The instructors and staff are great and eager to help. This Y has a great family environment.Weekdays between 4 and 7 can get a little crowded. I like that Mon to Fri they open at 5am and it is fairly empty until about 8:30am. After that there are more people but not over crowded. There are free weights and weight machines on the lower level as well as a sauna, Cardio machines and 2 pools and a full gym on the main level, and cardio, resistance machines and racquetball courts on the 2nd floor. There are also tennis courts outside in the rear and a small track. Basically everything you need is here to get in shape. Overall its a great place to get your fitness on. read more

I went to cancel my membership on 11/3. They told me because I'm into the new month and I didn't give them a 15 day notice I will have to pay for the full month even though I'm not a member any longer. I told them that I tried to cancel over the phone but was told to come in. That's not really fare since I was made to come in instead of them helping me over the phone. I have been coming to this ymca since I was 3 and it has grownup in what they offer but the employees haven't. Slow service, archaic entry system that if you have a class you have to sign in if your not a member or don't have ur card. There has to be a better system. Some lifeguards in the pool are useless and follow the rules when they feel like it. Enforce it all or don't enforce at all. Classes that are included with membership are wonderful and plentiful but to sign up for an additional class that you pay for is like Black Friday of the ymca. I took swim lessons at the Cross Island YMCA and initially, the first 2 classes, we were told that the regular instructor was out and we were getting substitutes. Not the most consistent if you're trying to learn how to swim since every instructor teaches differently. But by the 3rd class, it was apparent that the scheduled instructor won't be teaching and David took over the class. David was very patient and taught us to relax in the water. He taught us the basics and most days, stayed after the hour was up to make sure we learned our moves correctly. I was a bit late in signing up for the next session so I'll be missing out on the next session but I would have went back to continue my swim lessons. This place has changed a lot over the years and it has not been for the better. I blame it on poor management. The kind of people the place attracts does not make me feel very safe. I've seen both staff and members act in an alarming way whether it's a mother telling staff to "eff" off in front of little kids or staff members breaking down and yelling at a child. Many of the classes are understaffed and over-full. The equipment is shoddy and the management seems to put a higher premium on saving money than upgrading equipment and ensuring a child's safety. They say that their staff members are all certified- this is untrue. I've seen gymnastics coaches who have never taken a class in their life and they swap staff from one class to the other just to keep themselves covered, never mind whether or not they should actually be teaching the class. Another thing is lack of security. They have an old lady who is the manager on duty and she can barely walk and knows nothing about the facilities. The place is not clean and has serious vermin problems. I was at this place for several years (think 15+) for convenience, but recently switched to an actual gym that has better equipment, hours and staff for the same price. If you have kids, I can see the advantage of having them learn basic skills while you exercise, but I don't expect this place to turn out any superstar kids anytime soon. Let them learn the basics for cheap then send them to a more qualified place or go somewhere like Flushing YMCA. read more

The staff was very friendly and helpful when I signed up. I've only been going for the pool walking and classes. There are dedicated lanes for swimmers but the walking is a free for all. People go to socialize- stand in the middle and chat it up while others are trying to walk the length of the pool. It's annoying trying to dodge people as your walking in the pool. My daughter goes to gymnastics here and they have a great staff for each age group. It is a little crowded as far as the gymnastics goes but that can be over looked for the great job and teaching they do. They learn real gymnastic techniques that you would see in the Olympics. I've taken my daughter to other gyms before that just teach them to roll and strech but at Y they have many different pieces of equipment to teach them true gymnastics. The class is an hour long which is more than enough and it is in a fair price range for a 8 week session. So if your child is into gymnastics I would give the YMCA at cross island a try read more

I came here with a friend and I didn't like it. Rooms are on different floors and some of the machines don't work.

I have bad experience with the Saturday management two times regarding the swimming pool hours, and the most recent one happened to-day -- closing one the pool without announcement and no compensation for late swimmers to have extended swimming time in the other pool. I was called upon to leave the pool during my first lap of swim. In addition, the lifeguard superviser and his crew chased all swimmers out of the pool 15 minutes before closing time, not to mention giving additional make up time for the closing of the other pool. I hope that the higher level of management can deal with this issue seriously, or you would have many unhappy Saturday swimmers! read more
