My 4 year old daughter takes Gym and swim here and I've been borderline okay with this place -- some good days, some bad days, good staff, bad staff. I've seen what I used to think was the occasional insensitivity towards children's feelings and confidence and thought -- well maybe it's nothing or just someone having a bad day. After coming here for over a year I realize this isn't the case. There is a general "I don't care" attitude at this place. They promote and demote children to more skilled groups for all the wrong reasons. If a child isn't ready to advance to the next skill group don't do it because someone has too many children in their group only to figure out that there is room and put her back. This ping ponging treatment of young children is demoralizing and shakes a child's confidence. Shame on this place. I only write this because I've seen it too often here and prospective customers with young children should be aware. As a long time Y supporter, this is not what I expect. Very nice improvements in the small gym's girls locker room. Love the new colors and multiple shower stalls. They host Special Olympic trainers and swimmers who are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. The CI YMCA staff are supportive and encouraging. read more

Yes this Cross Island is really nice and clean! They have a lot of programs in there that you can take advantage with the membership you can go swimming, do cardio, take spinning classes, yoga, and play tennis. It can be a little crowded sometimes during registration dates, staff is always willing to help you you just need to ask! read more

They have lots of programs, activities for kids, toddlers and adults but they really need big improvement at the front desk. They dont have enough staff to handle everything. I called many times like 4-5 times with no answer and when somebody finally picks up they put you on hold forever/or they tell you to call back when they have more help. I put my 3 year old daughter here last spring, and she was unhappy everyday. My daughter has been in day care since she was 6 months old so this wasn't a routine to get used to. The staff seemed very unprofessional and not organized enough to run a day care. The only good thing was the swimming classes, but my child was not stimulated academically, and had a very hard time there which the staff never cared to address. She only made one friend there and my daughter is a bit smaller for her age so she can't defend herself well, she's not rude or a bad child and is very sweet but when i'd pick her up from here she had a bad attitude and felt the children bothered her a lot here. When I tried to talk to staff or ask someone how she's doing, I always get referred to the next person or the director, who would just smile and nod and have no idea how to address your concerns. My daughter never got any real lesson work as they promised. They also promised school trips, would ask for money and they stopped taking them. I put her in another day care not so far away and it was like from night to day. I'm so happy with the new one and she's back to learning and being confident again. She's almost ready for kindergarten, and I'm glad I listened to her and my best instinct. :-) Be very cautious when selecting this as a day care or summer camp program. Oh! and there is no security in this place, you can just walk right in and go up to a child. read more

I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH ON HOW HORRIBLY THIS PLACE IS RUNNED! Parking is great! And I always look for good parking, but the second I walked through the doors I knew there was something very off. I had a coupon for a free day at the Y. So I went up to the front desk and I said, "Hi, I'm visiting today." The guy said, "You're from another Y?" I said, "No, I have a coupon." He said, "So you're a guest." In my head I was thinking THAT'S JUST WHAT I FREAKING SAID! He didn't have me fill out any papers or anything b/c a class was starting soon, but he took a copy of my driver's license. He told me to come back when I leave to fill the papers out. And after he took a photo copy of my ID, he gave me my ID back and just walked off to do something else. I was like okay... He didn't tell me where anything was.. The class, the locker room..nothing. I had to ask a life guard where everything was. So she was nice enough to bring me down to the locker room and show me where the spin class was going to be held. I walked into the locker room and it was all run down. Didn't look very nice. In fact, I've been to this Y before when I was younger with my mom. And it looks EXACTLY the same. We're talking over 15-17 years ago. So I put everything in the locker and changed. And there was another class going on where the spin class was going to be held. So I thought that the life guard was wrong in what room it was in. So the only staff I saw around was in the break room I guess? They were eating cake..I guess it was someone's birthday. I tried opening it (there was a glass so I saw them through the door), but it was locked. And they were all staring me down like I had ten fucking heads. I said I have a question. And one of them was like oh she has a question. It took forever to get one of them up to help me. I said where is the spin class being held? I'm new. She showed me. And she was like you take the bikes out when the class starts. I've never taken a spin class before. I thought they were planted on the ground. But it was just pulling teeth to get someone to help me. And they were all nasty. God forbid that I asked them a question... The class was very good. He was a very good instructor. His name was Paul. He seemed to care about his students and their goals. After that I took Aqua Zumba with Kerri. She was good, but I take regular Zumba and it was too easy for me. There were all old ladies in the pool and one older man. So I left within the first ten minutes. I went up to her to explain why I was leaving b/c I didn't want to seem rude. She understood. So I changed and I went back up stairs to sign the form but the guy said I didn't need to. So I left and that was that. I will not be going back there. The rudeness from the staff (excluding Paul and Kerri) were freaking unbelievable. How dare I ask a question and God forbid they should get off their asses to do something! And the place looks the same from 15-17 years ago. They need renovation! read more

The sign up process is totally painful. Came at 7 AM to get a number. Then was told to come back at 9 AM to wait for my turn.

Love it here. The staff is friendly and the pools and and bathrooms are very clean. My kids love it here!

My kids and I goes to this place for swimming lessons. The place needs to be renovated (I hope they can get more funding). The area going to the women's locker room (basement) and the shower room is kept clean (thanks to the maintenance staff) but they need complete renovation. I saw roaches on both the small pool and the big pool. And the staff are not really strict with their rules. A door on the JK pool was supposed to be use to exit from the pool and people still use them to enter the pool. They would knock on the glass window to let them in. And if you don't open the door for them, they get mad and upset (when they're supposed to go around and go through the locker rooms to get to the pool). One time, I didn't open the door for this man and he told me that I was "rude for not opening the door for him." I told him that he needs to go around. If he had a disability I could've helped him but he looks like a healthy living thing! Even the swimming instructor don't obey this rule! They even let people go in the pool with shoes on! The management should just disregard these rules since not a lot of people follow them. A lot of the instructors are nice. Special mention to adult instructor, Charles, who really explains and teaches Advanced Beginner swimming very well. Liz is also very good with kids. As per the workout areas, I haven't tried their cardio but sometimes, while passing, you can smell the sweat (the room was small and looks tight). Seems like they need a stronger exhaust. The night duty receptionist is very friendly (a guy) and greets people when they come in. Staff are very nice as well. read more

This review is based on their summer camp program.I must say this is the most disorganized camp i have ever seen, my chid waited for bus pick up for 2 days and the bus never came. They are very unprofessional at that front desk. I had to wait 6 weeks to get my refund. Thanks cross island ymca for messing up my child's summer. read more

My son almost drowned during their swim/gym lesson. The lifeguard was distracted and the teacher was busy with other students. They hire young kids so don't expect good service. They're lucky I was sitting there to grab my son if not I would've sued them and made a police report. Lastly, they like to yell at your children and sit them on the side if they play with the water. Don't come here. Unsafe and unprofessional. read more
