Dropped in a few times on my latest visit to the lake.. every coach I encountered was welcoming and eager to make me feel included. I'm not new to CrossFit and the coaches adjusted to that and viewed me like one of the regulars. Workouts were tough but wether you scale or RX there is no difference in the treatment (unlike some other "hardcore" boxes I've been to) and there was plenty of space even with a packed class. Never met Myles but he was very responsive to some questions I had before I showed up. Great community of athletes and coaches. If you're on the fence, show up and you won't be disappointed. I dropped in twice while visiting family in the area. Myles could not have been more welcoming. He did a great job, not only of going over all the movements and the metcon stimulus; but he also made a point of explaining the value of what we were doing from a functional fitness perspective. The WODs were challenging; yet fun. The box is well-appointed, including a new outdoor rig/area. And the members were friendly, helpful, and clearly all about "community." I don't often write reviews but this time I absolutely felt compelled to share my experience (a super positive one!). My husband and I exercise mostly outside (running/biking) but have done a few friend-organized cross fit sessions in SF. We were up in Tahoe for a ski trip with friends and were looking for something to do on our off days. Enter -- Crossfit Avalanche. We had never done an official cross fit gym type thing and I was ready to be totally intimidated. Right when we walk in, we get a huge hello from the trainer/instructor and 3 other people introduce themselves. One other guy is new (he looks as nervous as I do) and two are regulars. Everyone there was super-friendly and supportive, cheering us and each other on. The workout was awesome - high intensity and totally energizing. The trainer went over proper form and was super encouraging. Workouts went like this: warm up exercises form review weight lifting high-intensity cardio fun (pushups, box jumps, burps, etc.) stretching smiling Drop-in rate the first day was $20 but then $15/time thereafter. Dropping in is a welcoming experience. Kelly is cool and leads you not only through the warm up but also the cool down. Everyone at this box was all smiles. It's a small-ish workout space but they make it work. They also have the best mats I've seen so far. If you've had to do hollow rocks and sits ups on sweaty mats (someone else's sweat), you know what I'm taking about. Note: $20 drop-in fee, box will be moving to wodify soon. read more

Crossfit Avalanche has a great balance of intensity and light heartedness. I am impressed by the huge range of ages and walks of life in attendance- the trainers really help adapt the workout to each persons needs. I haven't had a structured exercise regimen in years, (trail running and yoga only when I felt like it), but when I noticed simple things taxing my body I knew I needed to make a change. I decided to make an investment of time and effort in strengthening so I can do all the other things I love. Everyone, trainers and patrons alike, were very friendly and welcoming. The trainers do a great job instructing how to properly do the exercises, and form is always emphasized over bigger numbers. I don't review many things, but when I have a great experience I feel that I should try to somehow let others know how great the place is! read more

Wooohwwweeeeeee! Literally every person that goes tot his gym is grade A, top choice meat. Chiseled abs and gleaming gold skin are abundant at this place. Have you met Alison? What a stone cold foxx! How about Kyle? The most supple hips in America. Beth? More like John Cena. Oh, Myles? More like The hulk and Superman all in one! And that Sully; he can snatch like 438lbs. Dan, you ask? He can do at least 200 strict pull-ups...with one arm. I'm serious. Oh never heard of Erin? Well just you wait until you lay your eyes on this gem of a human. 10/10 will go back. read more

Finally got around to reviewing CA. I was on our annual vacation, this time for 2 weeks, so I didn't want to let off on my CF progress. I dropped in for a "per day" fee and everyone was real nice. I signed on to my wodify account there and paid easily for my daily butt kicking. If you're in town, definately drop in. I went to their Tahoe Vista box, but I believe they have a second one Truckee. Cross fit Avalanche is the BEST! Whether you're considering Cross fit for the first time or a Cross fit athlete, this is The Box for you. I do Cross fit in the Bay Area and wish I could train here full time. You will feel totally welcome here and you will get your ass kicked! They have every piece of equipment well organized in the gym and will provide instruction on the WOD and individualized instruction when needed. I am so sad to go home but will definitely return! Five stars and two big thumbs up to crossfit avalanche. The owner Myles did everything to make me, as a visiting crossfitter, feel welcome. To start- my crapy old I phone didn't work with the online sign up. I sent an email and soon after Myles got back to me and told me a space was reserved the following morning. When I got there, he was welcoming and introduced me to a few early birds. At the beginning of class he introduced all of the visitors to the group. Everyone there was friendly. The WOD was great. It was a large class, but ran really smoothly, and he was constantly checking form and encouraging the group. Did I mention the great workout? I have been crossfitting for over four years now and have stopped into several different boxes on the road--C.A. Is definitely one of the good ones! Stop by when you are in the area. read more

I honestly can not express how great this gym and their sister gym, CrossFit Blizzard in Truckee are. This place and more importantly the phenomenal trainers here have changed my life. I am in better shape now than I have ever been. They somehow find a way to push you to levels you'd never get anywhere else. Always challanging yet somehow always fun. Crossfit Avalanche and Blizzard are both amazing boxes to work out of in the Tahoe area. The support of the staff and the other Crossfitters at both of these gyms are awesome. No matter what your fitness level is the coaches will work with you to be your best and the thrill comes from when you start to get stronger and see the results. Myles and his head female coach were amazing. The gym was clean and had great equipment. There was just that one typical know it all that ruined the vibe in the gym, handing out unsolicited advice, showing up 20 minutes late to class, and making us feel unwelcome. I have been to CrossFit Box's throughout the country and most of them I liked for some reason or another. Crossfit Avalanche is my favorite as it is not only a Crossfit Community but due to its North Tahoe flavor/culture. Love this place and the people who go here. My wife bought me a membership here as a Christmas gift. I didn't even know what Crossfit was before that, so I didn't really know what to expect. Little did I realize, this is a great way to get in shape like nothing I have ever experienced before. The great experience started right at the top with the trainers. They are incredibly knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and most importantly are able to teach the exercises in a manner that is easy to learn and understand. I was asked about any injuries I have had before my first class and the trainers did a great job to work around my limitations. My form during the exercises has also been constructively critiqued in order to avoid injuries and improve my effectiveness. In the two months that I have been going here, I have seen a huge improvement in my physique, stamina, and posture. I would highly recommend going to Crossfit Avalanche or Blizzard if you are serious about getting in shape or improving your level of fitness. I have never been the type to work out at a traditional gym much, but I am absolutely hooked on Crossfit at this gym, with these trainers. Hands down, the best. read more
