I'm not sure if much has changed but paying under $200/month in DC seemed like a bargain to me. Also, I think it was very smart for the owner to invest in a box in this neighborhood as it will gentrify exponentially over the next several years. I noticed the classes started getting busier and busier each month I was there as word caught on and more people moved to the area. The only negatives I can speak of is that sometimes our instructor slept in and didn't make it to the early morning session. Getting up at 5 AM for nothing on several occasions pissed me off. Also, I can't speak of the community. DC tends to be a city where people keep to themselves. Down in Macon, GA where I was a member there was definitely a sense of community. At this box, it's just people running in, working out for an hour, and heading home. I did attend a happy hour event one night and only 3 of us showed up. I'm not sure I'd call that a tight community but it has nothing to do with the box itself, just DC people in general.

As someone that was new to crossfit, I was pleased how dedicated they were to ensuring proper technique. People are welcome at all levels of ability. I enjoy the atmosphere and comradery at the gym. It's bright and most people are excited to get sweaty and workout. It's not too crowded, although its hit or miss on whether there are 5 or 14 people in your class. I've heard that our gym is quite a bit larger than other DC crossfit gyms, which is especially nice for barbell movements. They have all the equipment necessary, which is in normal working order. A con that I think of is that the place isn't the cleanest. My hands are filthy after each workout. A dog, or sometimes two have been in the gym during training, which isn't great for people like me with allergies (lots of dog hair everywhere). The dogs don't interfere with working out, which is good.

And Orangetheory is by far one of the most fun and effective workouts I've ever done. I've been to a couple of the instructors so far and they are all pretty good but I find Alex to be the most motivating. She plays the best music too! This studio is not quite as big as some of the other locations around here but if I can get on my favorite treadmill then I'm good to go! I can't wait for my next class!

There was an option to park in the garage - free for 90 mins (not sure if that's a first client deal or what) but the garage was full! I ended up paying for 2 hour street parking. I arrived thirty minutes early like I was instructed and filled out paperwork. They had lockers, two bathrooms, two showers. My friend and I were given towels and water. Lockers were available for free with their own lock also. Laura (I think) was her name - explained mostly everything we needed to know and our instructor Razi added in. As far as the class, you get a heart rate monitor to record your stats which show up on the tv screen in the workout room. It is a combination of interval training on the treadmill, rower, and lifting/ab work which the instructor navigates the class through for 55 minutes. We started on the rowers, then did lifting/abs, and ended with the treadmill! I burned 400 calories!! This class was more than amazing and Razi made us feel comfortable and checked up on us frequently. It was definitely hard and you have to push yourself to finish strong ! I would totally recommend this class and at lest try it for free ! The studio was clean and the workers were very nice!

Here's a tip that I've learned since going to CFH: Check your pride at the door. Unless you've done crossfit before, you have a lot of acronyms to learn, and you will likely be corrected a few times with your form and such. You're learning correct form, so it's for the best. I have been training with him for about six months now, and in that time I have found him to be a highly energetic and motivational trainer who is very thoughtful about the workouts he puts together. When I first came in for a fitness evaluation, I was pretty nervous because, frankly, I've never been very good at this fitness stuff. Fortunately, Leon was super welcoming and made me feel at ease, even when I had trouble completing my first workout (I barely made it past the warm up, not because it was a crazy workout or anything like that but because my body just wasn't used to much physical exertion). Leon very patiently helped me push through all that. In addition to personal training with Leon, I have also taken a few boxing classes with Coach Herb. Those classes are a lot of fun and I would also recommend them. I should add that Leon is a good guy who lives in the area and is invested in the local community. I live a few blocks away and am very happy to be able to support a local business.

Staff is none pressure, and generally at the desk :-D The gym itself is fine for what it is. Late-night hours mean fewer people, easier access to machines, and a more relaxed workout. During busier times, I can see this location feeling more cramped and less convenient. Biggest issue here is parking. It's not intuitive, not particularly close, and can feel annoying if you're already trying to squeeze in a quick workout. My only frustration was with the "free" trial class. I initially signed up expecting my first class to be complimentary, but when I arrived and they checked my ID, I was told I had to pay $15 because of the address listed on it. Navy Yard is actually the closest Orangetheory location to where I live--about 15 minutes away--and the address on my ID isn't even that far from the studio either. I understand having policies in place, but I didn't see anything during the sign-up process making this requirement clear. I was told I could provide something like a utility bill to verify my current address, but having to bring a utility bill just to qualify for a free trial fitness class feels a little excessive. Had the $15 charge been clearly disclosed beforehand, I wouldn't have been nearly as frustrated. Overall, the class itself was a really good experience. I just wish the free-trial requirements and potential fee had been communicated more clearly before I arrived.

Many of the members were very friendly, making it a point to say hi and check on me as a first timer. 2) Workout: I know their workouts change, but the one I went to at 4:30pm on a Thursday in May involved five different stations- boxing, weights, jumping, kettle balls, and a shuffle run. You line up behind a color dot based on the size of the weights you want to work with. I then joined a few months later with a Black Friday deal as a way to add some variety to my lifting routine. I've done group classes like Elevate and Orange Theory and really prefer the MAD programming. I love that everyone is able to do the same workout but work at their own strength levels. The programming also isn't as intimidating as CrossFit or Olympic lifting. There's also a solid variety of dumbbell and kettlebell work mixed in with a variety of cardio machines to work on endurance. The class is fairly fast paced (in a good way) and before you know it you've completed a total body workout. I generally go in the evenings 2-3 days a week and on the weekend . I've had a chance to take classes with most of the coaches. My favorite coaches (and Carol! ) are the ones who give a gentle reminder of when it's appropriate to go up in weights for the day. I've been going to MAD for a little over six months and I'm happy to bring guests with me anytime I can because I love the workouts and members at H Street. I also love that Carol is so welcoming and takes the time to get to know members. Her attention to new and old members has gone a long way, several friends I've brought with me have commented on how personable she is. If you're looking for a new gym routine (beginner or advanced) I highly recommend giving MADabolic a try. Sign up for the 5 for 5 pass and try different coaches you won't regret it.
