Form is everything!
Sara T.

I sauntered by this newly opened gym recently and met the founder - Coach Jason. After spending some time with him and some other members, I realized his background and extensive experience are integrated into every corner of this gym. He spends time with each of his clients, making sure they understand the correct form & movements for a solid workout. His WODs are creative and never boring - next time you're there ask him how to play Crossfit Intellect tic tac toe!

My first muscle up! Thanks Coach Jason!
Bobback T.

There are many different Crossfit gyms, but Coach Jason Yu is one of a kind. Not only can he teach you all the proper techniques, but he can physically show you how to do everything himself also. He's a competitive Crossfit athlete himself so you are literally learning from one of the best!

I've been going to Surfcore Fitness for about two years now, and it's hard to overstate what this…read morecommunity has meant to me. I've been to a lot of gyms in LA over the years and was used to working out alone -- but I realized I missed having people to share the journey with. I came to Surfcore at a point in my life when I knew I needed to make some real changes to my health, and Carlos and Jose were so supportive and encouraging. After my first year, I got a clean bill of health from my doctor, and they genuinely celebrated that with me. Through the six-week challenges and all the day-to-day workouts, I've learned how to better balance my eating, my fitness, and my mindset. The workouts are tough but fun, and the people are what make it special. It's supportive, hilarious, and full of good energy. I've made real friends here -- something that's hard to do as an adult in L.A. And honestly, I really appreciate talking both workout shop and sharing the latest tea at Diva Fridays. Sadly, I had to move out of the area and I really miss my routine with the crew. Surfcore had become my third space -- a place between work and home where I felt grounded and supported by friendly folk. Truly one of a kind.

A very long overdue review for our beloved community gym!! My husband and I started at Surfcore…read moreAugust 2023, as we wanted to get into shape before our wedding. Our goal for joining the gym was to just get into better shape, but we didn't have any other expectations. We came out of it not only looking our best on our wedding day ;) but also became a part of the most supportive community of friends and people from all walks of life! Everyone at the gym is so welcoming, and we love the ALOHA spirit and vibes. The gym is run by two passionate (& extremely fit) owners, Carlos & Jose. They are not only our trainers, but true community leaders that always show up and do their best to make us feel comfortable and supported as gym members. They truly go ABOVE & BEYOND to make each member feel welcomed, and are always offering guidance even outside of the gym settings. In regards to the workouts, they are definitely tough! But not in an intimidating way. Carlos and Jose work with you to make sure that you can safely perform the routines, while also knowing when to push you to challenge yourself. As someone who's time is limited, I appreciate that these workouts are efficient and effective, and I always feel productive after the 45 min session (and oftentimes sore for days - the good kind of sore). I definitely value the variety of HITT workouts, which alternate between upper and lower body and continue to be a challenge for me even after 1.5 years. Since joining Surfcore, I've felt so much stronger and actually have more definition to my arms/back, and more !! Additionally, as someone in the healthcare field, and specifically working in a weight loss clinic, I can confidently tell you that my experience with patients on weight loss drugs (i.e.GLP-1 agonists), see the best results in their body and form when they combine their medication with weight-bearing exercises (basically all the Surfcore workouts). PSA to anyone who is on GLP-1's, you can lose up to 30% of your muscle mass if you are NOT combining it with a structured exercise routine! Logistics- My initial question when I first found them through a google search was "how's the parking situation??" Parking is accessible and free! Such a rarity on this side of LA. The biggest bang for your buck is signing up for their monthly membership to get unlimited access to all their classes. My personal focus was going to the group classes, but Surfcore also offers other opportunities for working out, including their barbell club, 6-week challenges that incorporates regimented combination of clean eating with workouts, personal 1-on-1 training, and fun competitive events on holidays and at the beach - and more! We are SO extremely lucky to have been a part of the Surfcore community, and if it wasn't for making the move out of LA, we would've continued to stick with this gym for life. They have set an extremely HIGH bar(bell) for what we'll be looking for in a gym community in our next chapter. We are truly going to miss our Surfcore family!! If you are looking for a place to start your fitness journey, please do not hesitate to reach out to Jose & Carlos to join this vibrant community!!

What I did NOT know I was signing up for... was RINGWORM. Honestly, I was shocked. I was in there looking cute too. Fresh matching ALO set. Expensive water bottle. Feeling like an off-duty fitness influencer who says things like "wellness journey." Then one day I look down at my leg and see this perfectly round circular welt. At first I was like... wait... did I protest this weekend? Did a cop shoot me with one of those non-lethal rubber bullets and I forgot? So naturally, I Google Image searched it like a real doctor. BOOM. Ringworm. Not exactly what Beyoncé meant when she said "put a ring on it." Now look, I'm not blaming Planet Fitness for this. This was clearly caused by the puddle of human soup left on the leg machine by that hot guy wearing a My Chemical Romance T-shirt, denim shorts, and Converse. No wonder he was sweating so much. Brother was dressed like he had a double shift at Hot Topic after this. So I go to the front desk and ask the employee what I should do about the ringworm and without even blinking he reaches behind the counter and pulls out a communal tube of Lotrimin antifungal cream like it was hand sanitizer. Not a NEW tube either. A battle-tested tube. The kind of tube that's seen things. And then he goes, "Here you go, man." Which means one of two things: They're incredibly helpful. This happens A LOT. So there I am, standing in the lobby of Planet Fitness, rubbing antifungal cream on my thigh next to a broken massage chair while Pitbull plays overhead. Judgement Free Zone indeed. 5 STARS.

I don't know how this Planet Fitness is still open, because every time I walk in, it feels like the…read moreplace has completely given up on even pretending to function. My experiences here have been so unbelievably bad that "disappointment" doesn't even begin to cover it. Let's start with the manager, Jimmy. In my personal experience, he has been one of the rudest, least helpful managers I've ever encountered anywhere. Any time I've tried to ask a simple question, he acts like I'm inconveniencing him by daring to exist. His attitude alone is enough to make someone want to cancel their membership. The filth in this gym is unbelievable. It constantly looks like it hasn't been properly cleaned in ages. The bathrooms are grimy, the workout areas smell awful, and the equipment is covered in dust and sweat like no one even bothers to wipe anything down. It's genuinely gross. And speaking of equipment--half the machines seem to be broken at any given time. Not just occasionally. Constantly. For weeks. Cardio machines, weight machines, you name it--there's always a giant "Out of Order" sign slapped on something. It's a gym where you can barely work out. Even worse, there is NO WATER. Not "the fountain was down for a few hours." No--there have been multiple times I've shown up and there was absolutely zero working water available anywhere in the facility. A gym that can't provide water is unthinkable, yet here we are. Their payment system is a joke too. I've had several experiences where they couldn't take cash, credit, anything because their system was down. How does a modern business function like that? And on top of all this, the gym feels completely unmanaged, with people who clearly aren't members constantly coming in to use the bathrooms, showers, and hang out. The staff seem overwhelmed or uninterested, and the situation feels chaotic and poorly controlled. In my experience, this location is an absolute trainwreck from top to bottom. Between the rude management, disgusting facilities, broken machines, no water, and non-stop operational failures, I can confidently say this is the worst gym I've ever stepped foot in. Avoid this place unless you enjoy frustration, filth, and wasting your money.

The problem in LA when you're looking for a gym is: 1. The gyms in your vicinity are corporate owned and the clients range from disrespectful to arrogant, or all of the above. 2. The gyms have quality control issues, unhygienic, and unmaintained equipment and/or facilities 3. Charge exorbitant rates for basic elements every gym should have (high price = absolute bellend customers who wish they could be at the Bezos wedding). This gym takes care of all three of those and then some. Having met and chatted with Dakota, Eric, Grace, and Brett (some of the gym's amazing staff), if the facilities don't convince you this is the most well balanced, INDEPENDENTLY OWNED gym in LA, these guys certainly will. They are so bloody friendly and make the atmosphere feel great. To your continued success and expansion GymTonic

In the beginning Steve was very friendly and none stop communication until I decided to try his gym. Prior to signing up, I discussed that I wanted to train 4x a week with him before he passes me on to other people. So I signed up and paid $1200 ( waste of money) thinking i would train 4x as week with him. The next day I showed up Steve was there and no communication of who I was meeting, I ended up training with a 22 years "actor" who has zero interest in my fitness goals, but just there to do the job. It was impossible to train with anyone as everyone was busy with their clients and such. I didn't even get to use my 16 sessions leaving me owed 5. It was literally a scam of $1200 for believing him. And after that first initial meeting, I never heard from him or saw him. But he happened to be on Grindr recruiting next victims. Be careful when you signed up and never believe their 4 star reviews as it is shit show in there.
