If you're looking for a gym look no further. Iron Buffalo is a true gem. And that is due to the hard work of the owner, Jon, who fostered a community of love, acceptance, hard work, and laughter. This attracted a group of wonderful people who I'm proud to call friends. They helped me move on from water polo and swim and learn how to work out for me. I lost 25lbs in one year and got back to feeling like myself - well actually a more confident version of myself. I moved to Bakersfield for work and every gym I try here just reminds me how special Iron Buffalo is. When I started with them I felt so welcomed. In other gyms (Fresno, Clovis, Bakersfield, etc) I've had to go out of my way to figure things out and get to know people. But I loved how at Iron Buffalo the coaches and members go out of their way to make the new person feel welcome. They asked me questions and helped me when I was lost. I remember in the beginning I struggled to make it to one class a week, but what started to motivate me was the conversations and laughter I would have with everyone. That's what got me going more and more. They have created something truly beautiful. I hope that one day my path will lead me back to Fresno, but if not I'll definitely be dropping in when I can. read more

This box is awesome. So convenient for those of us who work downtown. Jon is an awesome and encouraging coach. If you're thinking about trying CrossFit you will love this place. Update (6/11/17) - My wife and I have been coming here for over six months now and we love it more now than we did when I first wrote my review. The gains we've experienced are incredible!! Not just strength but balance and agility have improved 10x from where I was when I started. Confidence is through the roof too. This was a great CrossFit gym to drop into in Downtown Fresno. Their drop-in process is super easy; it only takes 5 minutes for an experienced CrossFitter to sign up online for a class (even less if you already have a Wodify account). The $15 fee is super reasonable. The gym itself is really welcoming of visitors; I've known John for a while, and his positive, friendly attitude radiates throughout all their staff and members. Whether you are new to CrossFit, a bit out of practice, or super experienced, the coaches do a great job of making sure everyone is warmed up and clear about the movements. The gym has a ton of equipment and is really clean (although I might add one or two more rowers). There is a lot of free parking around (although you might have to park down the block if it's busy), and a couple bus lines pass close-by too. Crossfit and Tower District? Do they really mix? Yup, it's the perfect combo. Yuppies are nonexistent or at least well-disguised. The vibe is open and inclusive, unlike previous gyms where I've trained. Re: Joe B's review... Pretty funny and some truth there. Yes Jon pays close attention. I've had zero training injuries since joining 6 months ago (unlike other gyms). Jon pushes himself in his own training, yes, so we get the upside of his constantly evolving hands on knowledge. That's called leadership. If you want a gym where the coaching consists primarily of encouragement to lift heavier, sure you can find that elsewhere. read more

CFIB has been my first CF experience and I'm so grateful it all began here! I started in March of 2018 and I'm blown away by the progress that can happen in just 5 months, with the help of wonderful coaches. Jon is a supportive, knowledgeable and patient coach/owner. He calibrates his encouragement to the individual, which works wonderfully for someone sensitive like me, lol. Coach Ozzie and Coach Mike also bring plenty of knowledge and additional upbeat spirit to the box. The whole experience helped me redefine fitness and wellness, all for the better. I have been a member of CrossFit Iron Buffalo for just under two years. To say that this gym has changed my life is an understatement. Through CFIB I started working out on a regular basis again, completed movements and lifted weights I never could have imagined I was capable of, and became a part of a community (the herd) made up of the most wonderful, encouraging, and inspiring people I've ever known. I also cannot speak highly enough of Coach/Owner Jon Akers. He is incredibly knowledgeable and provides a great balance of challenging his athletes to get comfortable being uncomfortable while also encouraging smart training/lifting habits in order to prevent injuries. Highly recommend. If I lived closer, I would definitely be at this gym more often. I've known the owner Jon, for about 5 years now and he is awesome and all the members I've met are bad ass and awesome too. Really good community there and good programming every time I've been in. Jon Akers threw cold water on my motivation when I was new & super excited about Crossfit. It was so discouraging to be around his knit-picky, OCD/control-freak coaching approach under the guise of "good form" (while he constantly limped around with his own injuries)! I remember starting crossfit 6 years ago, walking in not knowing what I was getting myself into. It seemed intimidating watching people lift weights and not knowing anyone there. I met Jon Akers that day and I am glad I decided to show up. With Jon's knowledge and experience, he helped me learn the movements and was always there for support. Jon is probably one of the most aware coaches I've trained with. I'd say his goal is to make sure everyone is challenging & enjoying themselves but doing it safely. Very clean and friendly. This gym is still pretty new, so class sizes are still small ( at least when I've been in), so you are practically receiving individual training sessions every time. Jon is a knowledgeable coach and very helpful. Very relaxed atmosphere, but beast mode is always welcomed. read more
