I've dropped in a few times over the years just to see how the Box is evolving, as I also do with other local Crossfits, just to compare them all over time. These are just my observations of the current experience. 1. Rusted/Old Bars - Most of the lifting bars (Men/Women) are in bad shape. Some have rust on them. I've been to many places that take care of their bars and lots of the time have all the same brand. There are numerous brands of bars in various levels of disrepair. 2. Rowers in Disrepair - They have a limited number of rowers (5?) of which are in really bad condition. One didn't register me rowing while another's chain was loose in the chamber with no tension, essentially not a functioning rower. 3. Assault Bikes in Disrepair - They also have limited Assault Bikes that are also in various levels of disrepair from broken foot pedals to unmaintained chains which is evident when pedaling. 4. Dirty/Separated Floor Tiles - The floor doesn't seem to have been cleaned in a long time, there were patches of mold in the area nearest the kettlebells. There was significant dirt in a lot of places as well as old tape for marking lines. The floor tiles have significantly come apart in many places. The widest I noticed was enough to place my hand inside and touch the concrete below. 5. Slated/Uneven Floor - The floor is uneven nearest the two side bay doors which has about 4 workout spots. So uneven that when I put my barbell down, the barbell rolled away from me pretty fast. 6. Filthy Bathrooms - Has to have the filthiest bathrooms of any CrossFit that I've visited and I've been to a lot! There were remnants of previous explosive visits to the toilet evident in the toilet and outside of it. 7. Unfriendly Coach - I went to a morning class and didn't receive the friendliest welcome. The Coach seemed as if they couldn't be bothered with me. This Coach teaches the early morning class at 5:30am. 8. Bad Wallballs - They are the cheap wallballs in which a lot of them have sand-like debris that falls out of them when you use them which gets in your eyes. Most are weight lopsided meaning that the weight isn't evenly distributed, common in the cheaper wallballs. 9. Bloody/Dirty Tapped Rigs - Some of the rigs have tape for a better grip. The tape grips have dried blood soaked into them. All were extremely dirty and hadn't been re-tapped in who knows how long. 10. Dirty Mats - The Box has the three-section folding mats as well as some larger black foam mats to lay out for HSPUs, for example, and they were all dirty. Didn't seem like they had been cleaned in a while. 11. Dumb Bells/Rubber Plates Broken - A lot of dumb bell heads are loose or the rubber coating is coming off due to wear and tear. Many of the rubber plates are in poor condition from the center metal ring being loose or the plate itself just being in poor condition or both. 12. Limited Class Times - There's a 5:30am, 9:30am, 12:30pm, 4:30 and 6:30am. You're out of luck if you want more flexibility for your schedule. Many of the area CrossFits have a more convenient morning class offering. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this Box. I've visited all the ones surrounding this one in the area and would recommend any of them over this Box. For instance, CrossFit Tilt and CrossFit City Line have state-of-the-art facilities with dedicated coaches. Everything is fairly clean and the Coaches are super friendly/experienced. The Drop-In fees are comparable and the entire communities at both are fantastic. The owners are all experienced CrossFitters that have made it to high-level competitions. They actually plan events together outside the Box frequently. There is a lot of parking at both places and they have doors to enter the facility. Oh, forgot to mention that CrossFit Newton doesn't have a dedicated front door, they have a bay door which you have to open and close in the colder weather. I also took some time and talked with some of the other members. There's a lot of drama and clicks in this Box. I will say that a lot of the members are fairly nice and pleasant. Most go because it's really close to them or because they are used to it. read more

Crossfit Newton is one of the best communities that I have ever been a part of. This gym has such a great environment and the workouts are great! The coaching is fantastic and the people are even better. Everyone is so welcoming and the workouts over the past few years have put me in the best shape of my life. I was reluctantly looking for a place to supplement my climbing with some cross training, because I was struggling to improve due to various climbing injuries. I'm someone who's always disliked group programming but this place has changed me totally. I love the classes and the owner is a true gem, genuinely positive and an encouraging human being. I had a phenomenal experience at CrossFit Newton! At CrossFit Newton, I was quickly and warmly welcomed into the team. The coaches were very knowledgeable and accommodating to my fitness goals and my crazy schedule. The other athletes are encouraging and welcome. As a triathlete, looking for some fun off season training, I decided to give this whole CrossFit thing a try. Having very little weight lifting experience, the coaches helped me safely learn the various movements. Once up to speed, I asked for some advice on some things to focus on to help me in my Tri races. We developed an entire personalized plan for me to help develop the muscle groups that needed the most work for my goals. As the Tri season came this year, I again asked to modify certain workouts so I could get the most out of all my training. The coaches were more than happy to help! As a consequence to all of this over and above coaching, this year I have won my age group in all 3 of my triathlons so far this year, had a PR in my 5k and won the season opener triathlon overall. First impressions are everything so here's my $.02 on my free trial experience this past weekend: -Several trash bags were by the front door entry way. Didn't smell great at all. - Decent sized gym but smaller than other crossfit places i've seen. -Small parking area in front of the gym (and someone parked right behind me which made it really tough to get out.) -When I got there for my free trial, a small class was going on and it took the instructor a while to acknowledge us. We just stood there for a while. -The instructor really was a nice guy and seemed very knowledgeable but I recently had another free trial at another crossfit gym and I found their staff to be much more attentive. read more

If there's one word that I feel captures my experience with CrossFit Newton it's "improvement." I've been exercising regularly for 10 years and never in those years have I seen such marked personal improvement than in my 8 months with CFN. Yes, I've become stronger. Yes, I can see more of my abs. But that's not the whole story. I'm more committed, determined, and goal oriented than I've ever been, which are traits that I've carried over in my personal life. I have CFN to thank for this. Owners Gil and Jodie and the rest of the CFN staff work tirelessly to cater to the individual needs of each member and to create a sense of community at the box. I've gained countless new friends during my time at CFN and have never been more impressed by a singular group of people in my life. One last word on improvement: CFN has moved to a new location and to say it's an upgrade is an understatement. I've been training here for over a Month now and love it. This is my first experience training in a "box," and it is a refreshing change from the insular, us-vs-them mantra of Olympic Weightlifting clubs in this area. Gil, the owner, is a tremendously caring and positive coach who is always around pumping up his athletes and making good things happen. As a USAW lifter, I was slow to come around to the idea of cohabitation with Crossfit. My first impressions of Crossfit gyms were these hole in the wall buildings with a bunch of equipment and a bunch of meat heads running around trying to prove just how strong/tough they are. I of course no longer feel that way. After years of HATING the regular gyms (ie. WOW, Planet Fitness etc.), I decided to give Crossfit a try. After all it pretty much provides everything I liked and needed in a gym which were group classes and a program that kept me interested so that I wouldn't be bored. When finishing a workout before, I never really felt like I could say "Man that was a GOOD work out." After all, when left to your own devices, do you REALLY challenge yourself? If you're like most people...the answer is no. When you leave Crossfit Newton, and your arms are so tired that they're shaking just to turn the steering wheel...that's when you know you've had a good work out! The coaches are really friendly here and are very helpful. They are 100% more interested in making sure that you do the moves right, than with how many reps you do, or how much weight you can lift. If they see you struggling they'll recommend you go down in weight or modify the move in some way to help your body move better. I am a big fan of Newton Crossfit! I have never been that big into working out, but decided I needed something more than just yoga (let's face it, it can get a bit boring sometimes) and the occasional boot camp class. I was a little leery to try out crossfit because I am such a workout novice (and my arms are sticks that can barely lift anything) but, I kept hearing about it everywhere and how everyone could do it. If you are worried about going to a class because you think you can't handle it or anything along those lines, stop worrying about it!! I'm serious, give it a try. At least try out the free class they offer to prospective peeps on Saturday mornings. You will be amazed to see what a group workout class feels like that does not involve starring at the minutes tick by on the clock (okay well, that is what I use to do). The hour goes by so fast! You are doing so many different challenging things you won't have a second to worry about the time. The on ramp you have to sign up for if you are new to cross fit is extremely helpful. I had Rob as my trainer and he was great at explaining and demonstrating the right way to do things! When it got to actual class time since I am new to crossfit I rarely ever know what the warm-up exercise or strength training portion actually is. But, Gill is always there to help and explain things (patiently). He also makes sure you are doing things right and have the right form so you don't ever have to worry about basically being left to your own (maybe sometimes clueless) devices. The moral of this story is just try it out. If you go to the free class and it isn't your thing, all you lost was an hour of your life and at least you got a good workout in (on a Saturday of all things). read more

This gym is fantastic. Just try it. Gil is one of the most knowledgeable and caring coaches I've ever met. All of the coaches here are super knowledgeable and encouraging. I have been here for 2 years now. I was first introduced to this gym by a former neighbor of mine. The first day I walked in, I noticed the immediate sense of community. Everyone had just finished their work day and were happily chatting away while waiting for class to start. A few people introduced themselves. The members here are genuinely nice, and the classes are attended by people of all ages and body types. We celebrate each other's success and even go out from time to time. Prior to Crossfit, I did hot yoga and ran regularly for about 3 years. In the years before that, I did Zumba. I spent a couple summers in a big box gym and used the machines, but I had no program to follow. I had no idea what I was doing, to be honest, so no free weights for me. I've learned so much from doing crossfit. All of the movements could be scaled up or down as needed. Don't be intimidated by the weights! It could be you in the future! If you have fitness goals, are looking for expert coaching, and won't say "no" to making a few friends along the way, Crossfit Newton is where you should be! read more

The staff is super friendly, encouraging, and really help you find the workout that fits you and your comfort level. I had no idea what to expect going into Crossfit, I just knew I was sick of going to the gym and being bored lifting weights 4 times a week at the local Planet Fitness (which is a nice gym) and running on and off when I felt like it. I wanted a workout that concentrated more on getting in better shape rather than only concentrating on small muscle groups with small gains in overall fitness. So I found Crossfit Newton. A couple guys I work with go there and really liked it, so I signed up. I was a little hesitant since it's pricier than my $20 a month "pick things up put them down" gym membership, but it is well worth it. It's been a month and I couldn't be happier. Now I'm not always happy at the time, sometimes I'm downright ready to pass out and throw up, but it's always a great feeling once I can catch my breath. The workouts are exactly what I wanted, a highly concentrated workout as many days a week as I can handle, hopefully 3 - 4 maybe even 5 if I can grow a pair. Each workout pushes my limits in both cardio work and training my muscles to do more the 4 sets of 8 on a bench. As long as you listen to the owner Gil (great guy) you should be all set. If you think this place is only for people in great shape and fitness freaks you're wrong, I've seen people at all different levels starting out. During the workouts Gil and the other trainers are always there to push you and also point out improvements to avoid injuries. After my last workout Gil was there asking me 20 questions to make sure I was only fatigued and not injured which seemed just as important to him as me getting those last few pull ups were 5 minutes earlier. The gym isn't that large but it's never been an issue for me personally or that I've heard of...and they are moving into a bigger place soon. As long as you have the determination you can do great here and it also offers a great sense of community. I can't wait to cancel my other gym membership because this is just what I've been looking for to get in the best overall shape I could be in. read more

I am a suburban mom of two, full-time attorney, who -- thanks to CrossFit Newton -- can climb ropes, deadlift 245 pounds, squat 180 pounds, run a 5K, do six consecutive strict pull-ups, and a bunch of other stuff that I could NEVER do in my teens, twenties, and even thirties. I could not be more proud of the programming and instruction I get here. While some CrossFit gyms can be militaristic and a bit ludicrous in their manner, this place is a "come as you are, leave bad-@$$" kind of place. You will get support from all the coaches. You will find friends who will celebrate your victories and support you in your lows. You will get strategic and healthy workout planning scaled to your specific needs. If you can't move your arms above your head because of a surgery or you can't jump because of being over-weight, you can still come and get an awesome workout that will get you to the next level. If you've been training for years and can't seem to break through that ceiling, you will find what you need to make personal records, left and right. I've been coming here for 3 years now and have experienced both the competitive track and the injured track. Both have served me well and have never been in better shape. I'm stronger, faster; have better endurance and discipline. I am 100 times more knowledgeable about my body, how it works and how to take care of it. And if I just show up 3 days a week, I feel like I can take on any physical challenge life throws at me. I can have fun with my neice running around with her on my back. I can move boxes and furniture piece 'o cake. I can carry my bike over huge fallen trees when my little outting turns out to be more back-woods than I anticipated. Carrying 3 loads of laundry plus groceries plus 20 lb back pack up my steep driveway is just part of the the day. That's not to mention the friends I've made here. I've been to all the classes and know a good portion of the people that come. I haven't come across anyone with a bad attitude or no sense of humor. No one who puts me (or anyone else) down. Crossfit Newton is my favorite place to be in the world. This was my starting crossfit gym and I will never go anywhere else. The programming is fantastic and even from the beginning, I never felt out of place or that I was behind everyone else. This is an amazing community of people that are so accepting and welcoming and I have made so many wonderful friends. The coaches and the owners, Gil and Jodie, are incredible and knowledgeable, and always cheer us on and make us push through tough workouts. If you have any interest in Crossfit and live in Boston, this is the gym for you. I was ambivalent about it after a mixed experience at another box, but after a few sessions I felt that I had found a new home. Gil is especially great at coaching each athlete and assessing needs based on individual factors. But the whole vibe is just fantastic. I am hooked. This is more than a gym. It's a lifestyle. I tend to be a bit selfconscious and shy at the gym. Not here. Here, I feel that we are all appreciated, challenged, and respected. read more

Whether you've never done CrossFit before or you're looking for a box to get back into, CFN is the best choice! First of all, Gil, the owner and coach, is a master when it comes to programming. He structures weekly lifting for both the competitor and non-competitor programs so all athletes consistently make progress and establish PRs. For example, we just finished working through a squat program and I added 15 pounds to my back squat on Friday. Gil was right there talking and encouraging me through each lift leading up to it, and true to form, celebrated the new weight when I was finished. It's important to note here that when I walked into CFN in January of 2012 my max back squat was 110 pounds...on Friday I squatted 190! Because of CFN I'm able to measure progress in terms of what I can lift, how hard I can push myself during a WOD, and in the visible physical changes in my body. It's also important to note that Gil and the other coaches aren't focused on pushing you to extremes; they want to challenge you, but maintain focus on keeping you safe with movements and weights. The primary goal is getting technique right, so if you're struggling or injured, there are always scaled and modified options that they'll suggest. If you've never done CrossFit before and are feeling nervous or intimidated, I get it. That was me when I first started two and a half years ago. After all, it's a far cry from the experience of a gym like WOW or Plant Fitness or BSC. Those impersonal, insular worlds of "figure it out yourself" that lack community and the motivating forces of coaches and fellow athletes. And if you've never done Olympic weightlifting or climbed a rope or pushed a sled or struggled through pull-ups, it can all be a bit intimidating. But don't worry! Gil and the other coaches are welcoming and will guide you through it all. Not to mention, the other athletes, who (for the most part) will introduce themselves and welcome you into the gym, invite you to lift with them, and push you through daily WODs so you can leave it all on the floor. This is all part of what makes CFN so special: THE SUPPORTIVE COMMUNITY that makes you feel like part of a team and that drives you to push harder and achieve more every time you work out. Despite the range of athletic abilities and motivations for being at CFN (to get strong, to lose weight, to become a CrossFit competitor, etc.), we all come together to support and celebrate each other. I've established some excellent friendship in the gym, many of which have spilled over into non-gym related activities. You'll connect with people in the classes you go to, but then will also get a chance to branch out and meet other people during Paleo challenges, in-house competitions, Garage Games, holiday parties, etc. Ultimately, you can trust that no matter what your fitness goals, you'll achieve them at CFN, while also gaining in confidence, determination, happiness, and friendships. read more
