I have been a CrossFit Sun member for over a decade. It's helped me maintain a healthy lifestyle over the years. My wife and I were members at this box for a year. This is a great gym for a few reasons: The coaches are 100% themselves all the time. Most of the members have been going there for more than a decade so the community is solid and super welcoming, and there aren't any cliques or "you can't sit with us" types which I really liked. Mark really strives to be a master of his craft, you can tell he puts in the time to learn new things outside of the gym. So..... I promised a year ago that I would be back to this awesome and amazing box.. and I kept my promise!! Came back to CFS this time with the hubbie. He's done xfit at another box a few years ago. He told me stories about how people puked at this other gym and how much they really worked you to death. He stopped going because he was injured half the time and because it was too expensive. He ABSOLUTELY LOVES CFS. He loves the community. He loves the coaches. He likes how they now have the academy to teach you the basics and gradually introduce you to xfit. He especially likes how the coaches always emphasize form and proper technique over anything. With the tons of members that have since joined, it meant the world to me that Mark (the owner) remembered my name when I returned. It's really a small thing.. but it means so much to come back to a group of people.. a community.. and really be welcomed back. I have 2 Yelp friends who got me to try out CrossFit Sun in Carmel Mountain Ranch. They are quite literally a stone's throw (a hard throw) away from Frog's Fitness if you know where that is. I have been doing it now for over 2 weeks and I think I will stick with it. Maybe I will be able to stick with it permanently. I can tell you this about Crossfitters that you may not read here or other places: they are not crazy, but they are dedicated. Seriously. If you want to work on your dedication and tenacity skills, a good way to see about how to get a grip is to go here, or even most other CrossFit gyms. What we do in our workout days (wods) is almost always hard or very hard. It is what the Head Coach Mark likes to call "fun and easy." Do not think you will go home each time with a faint "glow" of perspiration. You will need to hydrate. You will breathe a lot and fast doing wods here. The good news: you are paying (in full) the tax to go to Claim Jumper afterward! They have a good mix here. About half women and half men. Most of the men are married and bring their wives or girlfriends too to be part of the fun. We have high school and college students and military (guys...nice) and pro athletes and doctors. They have a "kiddie class" too,but I have never seen it. The wods' repetitions count is high enough that I am not getting muscle size or mass (everybody worries about this one) just getting long and strong, and doing so faster than pilates for sure. Getting cardio better than an elliptical can give. I think that the working muscle repairing itself each night is a great way to burn calories: while you sleep. ;) Upside: I am shredding calories, making friends with cool people, staying really healthy for summer apparel. Downside: CrossFit costs more bucks than you are used to for a commercial gym membership. Reason: Intensive group coaching by as many as 3 great coaches with every session. That adds up in a month, even though it is less than a typical P.T. for 2 hours. If you can live with that and do the work, you will dig it. read more

I promise that CrossFit Sun will change your life. How do I know? Because it changed mine. And of course it was for the better! I never considered myself the "workout" type. After years of overeating and not being active, I moved to San Diego; I started running and lost some weight, but I could never get myself to lift weights. So after about 15 years of not really working out seriously and knowing a few coworkers whom had unbelievable body transformations doing crossfit (and none were necessarily athletes) I did a quick search before my 39th birthday at crossfit box's near my house in PQ. Immediately Crossfit Sun came up with stellar reviews so I booked an intro session with Chung Sun. My biggest fears were obviously the fact I was so out of shape, am a desk jockey all day at work, and knew even trying to do one pull-up was going to be near impossible. Chung immediately put my concerns at ease and within the first hour of my first intro session I learned more about the proper form for a squat then all my younger years of lifting fairly seriously. I've struggled with my weight for many years and really to no other excuse except shear laziness and bad eating habits. My mind was finally in the right place to no longer take my health for granted and I knew a gym membership wasn't going to work for me. I wanted to be pushed, coached, and have a "team" of fellow members that also are positive and help drive you to reach your goals. It's now been 4 months and this is exactly what I'm getting. Mark Sun, Dan "Captain", Deej, Brandon, and all the coaches are fantastic. They care about proper form and technique versus just trying to throw up heavy weight and injuring yourself while at the same time pushing you to perform at levels you don't even think are possible. Not only are the coaches great but the members are fantastic people that also push you along to new personal records (PRs). If you are considering joining a "box" and are scared about the overall physical impact of the workouts I strongly suggest you check out Crossfit Sun. Let me just give you a quick background on myself so you know where I was before I started. I was never one motivated to "workout" or doing any physical activity for longer than a couple months. As a kid, I didn't grow up participating in sports, but watched it on television. As an adult, I wasn't very active either. I didn't like any type of activity that made you sweat, so basically I was pretty lazy. My idea of "working out" was 30 - 45 min on the the elliptical, then hit a few machines, but I spent most of the time reading the directions to get them to work than actually using them. My husband on the other hand grew up playing sports and was very outdoorsy, but after having three kids he didn't have the time to workout or the motivation to do it alone. Back in March he wanted to get back to doing CrossFit. He used to go 3x a week 2 years ago, but timing was just off. He looked up a few places and found a few options that were all the same distance from us, but something drew him in to contact CrossFit Sun. He contacted them for an introduction and was scheduled to come in the next afternoon. I ended up tagging along to see what it was about, but honestly did not expect to go any further from that. We came in for the introduction and got to meet both Mark and Chung (Owners & Trainers). To be honest, when I came in for the introduction I didn't really take it that seriously. I thought it would be like all the other gyms we've been to before where they show you the facility and go over class schedules, take a few measurements to get your BMI and then talk about fees. That is not how CrossFit Sun operates. They were super nice and very knowledgeable; explained what CrossFit is and went on about key things to think about with health overall, not just from a fitness standpoint. They didn't even want to talk fees, they wanted us to get the feel for the classes ourselves and if it works for us we go from there. I was really surprised by that because what gym or fitness class out there do you know that wants you to try them out before talking price or asking you for your credit card to get started? That was a first for us! I came in for class everyday during my 2weeks and was so excited to come back. I watched other members doing the work out and would think, "Wow, I want to be able to do that one day." Everyone is very friendly and genuinely motivating. It wasn't because I was new, but that is the CrossFit Sun environment you are in. Awesome coaches and friendly members! The workouts each day are super fun and challenging, but never impossible. I'm glad to have tagged along with my husband that one afternoon in March because I have not only grown tremendously from this experience (both physically as to what my body is capable of doing and mentally to know I can push myself), but I have gotten to know a great group of wonderful people! Ok, first off, this is not a gym... it's a family! My wife and I joined 2 months ago and have felt extremely welcomed and motivated to push ourselves. The coaches are all very attentive and helpful and will give you a proverbial kick in the butt when you need it... but always with good humor and making sure you're safe. The best fitness instruction I have ever received in my life. No comparison. I can say, honestly, that I was intimidated, and I can also say that this is probably the best decision I have ever made. I have lost 3 pants sizes and with that, an increased sense of knowing that my body has no boundaries. At first, I simply wanted to lose weight. But now I stay because I want to push myself. The coaching is simply outstanding. If you're familiar with Crossfit, you know part of the philosophy is actually about how great coaching, combined with variety and high intensity in short spurts of time, produces phenomenal results. If you are not familiar with CrossFit, you should know that instead of showing up at a gym to do your own thing, you get extremely specific, knowledgeable coaching, and a community that cheers you on. This is a particularly great CrossFit gym because the owner and founder, Mark recruited coaches who really, really care and have a high degree of knowledge. I couldn't even do a basic squat, but their persistent, incisive, and highly enthusiastic coaching pushed me to not only feel comfortable with CrossFit, but to get stronger than I have ever been. I was skeptical when I initially read about it, and I was no fitness freak. Hiking, amateur soccer and chasing my children around is what I mostly did for fitness. But I've come to the conclusion that the way we exercise in CrossFit is actually the way the human body was meant to move and exert itself. I've only been doing this for two years now but I'm stronger and healthier than I have ever been. And yes, my body is often sore but I have learned how to "mobilize" to take care of my poor muscles. I was visiting from out of town and came to CrossFit Sun to work out. I was so impressed with the caliber of coaching I experienced while I was there! Chung is knowledgeable, encouraging and isn't afraid to kick your butt! Every time I travel I try to visit other boxes and meet others in the crossfit community. I don't go to the gym to "have fun!" I go to work. That's why I like Crossfit Sun. Although the Sun brothers never push you past your limits, every class works me basically to exhaustion. And that is just what I'm looking for. Mark and Chung are great motivators, keep the classes interesting, different, challenging, and never let me sandbag. This is the perfect workout for me. After working out for 3 years at 24 Hour Fitness I gave Crossfit a try at Crossfit Sun. The trainers, Mark, Chung, and Todd are the best I have every worked with and I can't see myself working out at any other gym. In my old workout routine I would spend about 3 hours every other night doing a combo of some weight lifting and a long run at the end. Working out at Crossfit Sun has brought me to a level of fitness I never could have achieved with my old routine. In one of my first workouts called Cindy (as many rounds as possible in 20 minutes of: 5 pullups, 10 pushups, and 15 squats) I started out at just 8 rounds. After less then 3 months I had double my performance to about 16. I have never seen those kind of quick results before. The results are amazing but what is more important is that Mark, Chung, and Todd have created an environment that makes me look forward to my workout every day. They and the other members of Crossfit Sun make working out the highlight of my day while making me push myself to my limits. For all of you out there who want to get in shape, CrossFit is the fitness regimen for you. CrossFit Sun is run by Mark & Chung Sun, both are young, energetic and best of all very enthusiastic about CrossFit. Both have tirelessly pursued their certifications including CrossFit Mobility, a very under rated certification but SO, SO, SO important. I have been a member of 4 different CrossFit Gyms and been CrossFitting for over 4 years. CrossFIt Sun has an energy about it that creates a great environment for CrossFit training. The Work-outs of the Day (WOD for short) consist of a warm-up, some mobility to work on flexibility or joint and mobility (all of us need to work on this), then the WOD and usually a cool down & stretching to improve muscle recovery. Mark & Chung really have a desire to teach and motivate to make you better, faster, stronger, more flexible which is important in fitness trainers. They are also constantly looking to improve and are adding programs such as CrossFit kids. For all of you who may be thinking of giving CrossFit Sun a try, please do so. Unlike some of the previous reviews, I did not work out regularly before CrossFit. I thought I would have to train BEFORE I even joined, but thankfully, Mark, Chung, and the other members are very patient and encouraging. The workouts are scaled down according to our individual skill levels when we first start out. In a few months of working out with CFS, I'm able to do things I never imagined I could do (like flip those giant tires). I have never worked out so hard my entire life and I'm LOVING every minute of it! If you want a good workout, get ripped, get healthy, or make friends...CrossFit Sun is the place for you! read more

CrossFit Sun is everything you'd want in a CF gym. The coach I worked with (Mark Sun) is friendly, outgoing, patient and extremely knowledgeable about anything fitness, health and well-being related. He is great at motivating you to push yourself to what you think is your limit and then past it. Mark has also taken the time to work with me one-on-one to make sure that my exercise technique and form is proper and also helped me plan out a diet to follow. The fact that he is certified and also has a background as personal trainer really helps his gym run smoothly. Mark will run you through a training session to figure out what your current fitness level is at, then work with you to develop a plan to help you achieve your goals. The training session makes sure you understand the fundamentals of the workouts that you will be doing so that you don't hurt yourself and ensure that you get maximum gains from the exercises you do. All the members I've met have been very encouraging - I've been embarrassed to be the straggler on some routines but they've always helped me to finish strong and I definitely would never have been able to push myself that hard on my own. Mark is on top of the latest CrossFit routines and is constantly on the look out for new equipment and exercises to share with everyone. The website is always updated and members leave helpful feedback and post times on a regular basis. The pricing is also top notch - I've dropped in on other CF gyms where their rates are up to triple what Mark charges! Mark also is willing to work with anyone's schedule. I always stop by when I'm back in San Diego (I live in Orange County now) because I know I'll get my butt kicked in a great workout. What more would you want in a CF gym? read more

I found Crossfit Sun in Carmel Mountain by pure luck last May while searching for a new workout program in my area. I've done bootcamps in the past and have trained for and ran 3 marathons, both were in a group setting. Therefore, I was eager to find a comparable type of program because I knew I excelled best in this atmosphere. Having never heard of Crossfit, I thought it would be similar, but boy was I wrong. The philosophies, style, and coaching separate this from anything I've ever done in the past. It's hard to explain what each class entails because each class is different from the last. Our coaches manage to create a fun, friendly environment while mixing in a variety of challenging exercises. I know there are many gyms and Crossfit gyms out there but I couldn't imagine going anywhere else. The amount of friends I have made combined with the physical results I have seen, really make me feel like my time (and money) is well spent here. Coaches Mark and Chung are beyond dedicated and the love for what they do is apparent everyday in their energy and encouragement. In the past, I have sort of felt like just a number in a big group, but our coaches make sure to give everyone one on one attention, every class. I am currently 4 months pregnant and am still going strong. Mark and Chung have been amazing about keeping an eye on me and going out of their way to create alternate or modified movements when necessary. They are constantly reminding me to "breathe" and to "focus more on technique than strength and intensity" which I sometimes forget in my stubbornness. I honestly never thought I would be able to workout at all, let alone at this level when I became pregnant. However, it has kept me fit, helped maintain my energy, and I swear it has been the reason I never had any morning sickness. So you are thinking about getting into shape, trying CrossFit or checking out CrossFit Sun? Let me tell you why I think CrossFit Sun is a pretty amazing place. My husband and I moved to San Diego about 7 months ago and neither of us had been working out much for a while. I had always been into yoga, but I also wanted to meet people as well as get into better shape. I had heard about CrossFit but was pretty intimidated. I'm pretty sure the last time I ran a mile was in high school *cough* years ago and same with lifting weights. I had heard about the community aspect of CrossFit as well and decided to check it out. Actually, these Yelp reviews pushed me over the edge to try it. After my first intro session with Mark, who made me feel pretty comfortable about the box and what CrossFit was, I scheduled my three intro classes to learn the basic movements, all the while nervously looking at everyone completing the WODs. Then I came for my first class. Ouch, did that class push me - and the workout was only 8 minutes long! I wasn't instantly hooked on the workouts like some, but I really must say that the community is what kept me going those first few weeks when it became clear to me just how long it had been since I had worked out. I struggled with the workouts, and still do, but when everyone is cheering you on it is pretty amazing what you can accomplish. I'm now in my 4th month, and I have run/jogged a mile without stopping, increased my weight on all sorts of lifts and actually kind of like burpees! I now look forward to each workout because I can't wait to see what I can do with it. The coaches are phenomenal (all of them) and don't let you sacrifice form for reps. Oh don't get me wrong, they push you hard! I have never worked out at such a welcoming and supportive community as this one.
