What is wrong with this guy? A few months ago DR. RENE RUBIO,DVM with CROSSWAY VETERINARY HOUSECALLS, made a house call for a sedated nail trim and some annual care for my dog. Unbeknownst to me, instead of a nail "trim", he quicked my dogs nails. This is a brutal procedure and most vets will not do it. Before this happened, I had never heard of quicking. If he had told me what he was going to do, I would have never allowed it. When my dogs nails started growing in, one of them is split into 3 sections and looks like a peeled banana. It's red and swollen and all the fur is gone. For the last couple of weeks she can't even walk. Because her toe has gotten progressively worse, we called Dr. Rubio to schedule an appointment, so this could get taken care of and to my surprise, he said he won't treat my dog and to take her somewhere else. He said she would need surgery, but he himself does surgery! Why won't he treat my dog???? Her toe was fine before he did this procedure and now he won't even see her and try to help her! It's not like I asked for free services or even a discount. I just want my dog to be herself again, so I don't care how much it costs! ( and trust me, this guy is expensive!) I will be filing a complaint with the Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners this afternoon. I'm also going to contact an attorney. Vets have a standard of care to follow too. In my 58 years and countless pets, this is absolutely the worst experience I've ever had with a veterinarian. This buisness' moto is, "We treat your pets like family". Today we had Dr Rubio and his assistant out to take care of our FOUR animals! They both were so great and gentle with our babies! They came to our home exactly when scheduled! They were very communicative and discussed all our options as far as vaccinations/treatments. I would say it cost close enough to going to the vet; it is well worth it! The animals are already so scared and it is so hard trying to wrangle them up for the vets office! This helps them from being exposed to other animals and it is slightly less intimidating since you are walking out your front door rather than a car ride and a room full of animals/strangers! I just had my first visit with Crossway and Dr. Rubio. I have a senior cat, and I no longer wanted to have to traumatize her by taking her to a vet appointment. Also, it seemed like veterinarians that I had taken her to in the past just wanted to continue to do all sorts of unnecessary treatments and testing. Dr. Rubio was very kind and very patient and answered all of my questions and concerns. He understood that my goal was to make my senior cats last year's as happy and as comfortable as possible without any unnecessary poking and prodding etc.. A must for my cat who is scared of everything. She hates getting into her carrier, getting in the car, and definitely going to the vet. My cat would vomit and go to the bathroom with any of those things. Now when I put her into her carrier upon the doctors visit, she's fine. She normally needs her asthma shot which she used to have to get every quarter, but now with our new vet it's almost September and the last appointment was in February. Appointments are available within a reasonable time. The vet arrives on time. We can bring up any concern and ask all questions and he helps with everything. Dr. Rubio and his assistant were so compassionate, calm, knowledgable and kind. My 14 year old dog, Chloe, had incurable liver cancer, among other issues. So my husband and I made an extremely difficult decision to have her euthanized at home. Dr. Rubio and his assistant were exceptionally gentle and compassionate explaining each step he was taking. Dr. Rubio always delivers great and compassionate care to my animals and has for years. I would highly recommend him for your pet patients.

I had read some positive reviews of Crossway online, so I had high hopes when I scheduled him to come out and perform a checkup on our cat. Those hopes were not fulfilled, though, because Dr. Rubio turned out to be overpriced, overweening, and underwhelming in his expertise. When I scheduled Rubio to come out to our house, I did so because I'd read some positive reviews of his work in my research into local vet clinics. I preferred a mobile vet because our cat does not handle traveling well, and I wanted to have the opportunity to be with her when she was examined. Many clinics now have policies that preclude the presence of pet owners on account of the corvids. So we scheduled Rubio to come out and see if he could tell us what might be ailing our kitty. His assistant called on the day of the appointment to let us know that the vet would actually be about 20 minutes early, so things seemed to get off to a fine start. It went downhill quickly from there. When his assistant came to the door, she launched into her spiel without introducing herself. That's not the end of the world, but I prefer to know who I'm speaking with as a matter of simple human courtesy, especially with people I need to trust. We then took our cat out to the mobile van to let the doctor look her over. Dr. Rubio had an arrogant and condescending manner from the outset. Many doctors do, but this one was a special case. He hardly let us get out a sentence about what was going on with our cat before he interrupted and began telling us what he thought was the matter. I actually had to interrupt him in return simply to be able to include some critical information about our cat's health problems. When I asked him a question about his diagnosis after he'd examined our cat, he responded in a derisive tone but failed to directly address my question at all. He speaks with a foreign accent, and that also made a portion of what he said unintelligible. Not good. There were other things that put me off about his overall manner, but suffice it to say that I was not impressed with the way Rubio interacted with us. When we did get down to discussing Rubio's diagnosis, my wife and I found his knowledge lacking. I have a master's in biochemistry and my wife is an RN, so we both have more than enough education and experience to comprehend and discuss veterinary issues. Straight away, his reading of our kitty's blood panel struck my wife as completely misguided. That alone was enough to make her insist we see another vet. Part of Rubio's treatment recommendation involved the administration of oral medication, even though my wife assured him she administered IV drugs every day, but he seemed to not know the term "oral gavage." That struck me as odd, though at the time I chalked it up to the language barrier. Then, when we finally did take our cat to another vet, she disagreed with his diagnosis. In fact, the second vet we saw found tumors in our cat by taking a simple chest film. Needless to say, we were livid. The combined weight of these questions left us with a poor overall impression of Rubio's expertise. Perhaps we just caught him on a bad day, but it is what it is. Once we finished discussing diagnosis and treatment, Rubio presented his bill for services. It was much higher than what we'd expected. It was higher even than what we would have expected to pay for emergency care (which is understandably costly), but for an exam by appointment, it seemed downright exorbitant. This confirmed our initial impression that Rubio has a very high opinion of himself, much higher than is warranted based on the service he provided. In any event, our experience with Rubio sent us searching for another veterinarian the instant we took our cat back into the house. So, bottom line, I would not recommend Dr. Rubio. I tender this opinion with regret, too, because the world needs more good mobile vets. Many of us have cats and dogs who simply don't travel well. It's a truly wonderful thing to find a vet who will come to your home. That is the best I can say about Rubio, that he will come to you. Otherwise, I regret that we ever requested his services in the first place. read more

I have used Dr. Rubio and his team for several years now and they are absolutely wonderful! I have two GSD's and I couldn't ask for a better Veterinarian. My dogs are very protective and not the friendliest toward strangers. Dr. Rubio respects the animals for their nature and treats them with respect and asks only for the owner to control their animals as any Veterinarian Clinic would do. His office staff is great as well and will try to accommodate your schedule to the best of their ability. I like the convenience of the house call service. Recently one of our older dogs was diagnosed with an incurable health issue and we had to make a tough decision to put her to sleep. It was a hard decision to make, but Dr. Rubio was so compassionate and caring and we knew our precious girl did not suffer anymore. This is the best vet in Magnolia, spring, the woodlands. Dr. Rubio was my vet before at a clinic and I googled to find him. Prices are extremely competitive which was really impressive. The other great part was I didn't have to vacuum my car or pay for someone else too after putting the two beagles driving and then having to fill out forms and wait to see a vet in a clinic. We're really impressed with the kindness and care given to our 18-year old lab, Angel. We contacted Crossway to assist us with the hardest thing that any pet owner ever has to do. Our family's best friend of 15 years was suffering and we were seeking out alternatives to putting him through the stress of taking him to a clinic. One of our dogs stopped eating her kibble and hard biscuits, and we suspected something wrong with her teeth. Faith responded to my voice mail quickly. Dr. Rubio examined our dog's teeth and noticed inflammation around her gums as well as a build-up of tartar. We agreed on a cleaning, which removed all the tartar and was very reasonably priced. We even received a senior citizen discount. We recommend and will definitely call Crossway again in the future. read more
