The dinner was good and the presentation was informative so we agreed to meet with him or one of his colleagues for a financial review with a focus on social security. We diligently made copies of all our bank statements, our stock portfolios and our latest annual social security statements and took all this information down to their office. We were told this information would be reviewed, fed through "sophisticated" computer models, and then we should come back for a free consultation in about a week. We never heard from them again and we travel a lot so we forgot all about them. Fast forward 6 months to a year and Mike Sullivan calls and asks whether we'd like to come in for a free consultation. "Eh, didn't we already give you all our financial information like a year ago?", I asked. "Right", he said. "Blaine (or whoever) retired shortly after you met with him and we lost all your financial information". I indicated that I wasn't going to give them copies of everything again and wanted to know what had happened to the documents that we had already given them. Mike called again about 5 weeks later and left a message. He called again a few days after that and spoke to my wife. She agreed to meet with him and bring new copies of all our documents. When she told me this I immediately called Mike and told him that this wasn't going to happen. I still wanted to know what had happened to the documents we'd dropped off at their office previously. The following day he left a message saying they didn't know what had happened to our documents. I called him back just minutes later and he had already changed his mind. Now he said that he did know what had happened. Our documents had been shredded when Blaine retired just a few days after meeting us. Mike said that if we brought in new copies of all our statements we'd be given "first class" treatment and, anyway, it was a free review so we had nothing to lose. Au contraire, we had everything to lose and, for sure, they would be the ones to lose it. I can't believe how cavalier these people are with potential clients' information. There's no way I would ever again hand over personal information to people at this firm. Their excuses ring hollow; they're not to be trusted. Beware! n.b.
