I was looking for a restaurant with gluten free options and CR's did not dissapoint. We had the lamb chops for an app which were cooked perfectly. Dinner was the brick chicken and again it was moist and delicious. My husband had the beef which is said was tender and very flavorful. They also had gf warm bread that was soft and fluffy. I'd heard great things about this restaurant and decided not to wait much longer before trying it. My review is for the bar/ lounge section only. The plan was for 6 of us to enjoy their Happy Hour from 4 to 6 which includes some interesting drink and small bites specials. Entering the restaurant I was greeted by a lovely host. I made my way over to the bar area which I found to be quite upscale for the area. The tasteful decor is a combo of upscale meets comfort... I really liked the added touches such a s the brass lamps on the bar placed between seating. The fireplace was roaring and on such a cold evening and it just felt wonderful! Our server was top notch, bringing over the men inus for us to peruse. I decided on a glass of Pinot grigio in a carafe. One of my companions ordered their version of a Moscow mule. The other an Expresso martini. Scanning the happy hour small bites I chose the sweet potato chips. They were served warm and addictive.....I tried to slow it down and it wasn't easy. My wine was excellent.. We sat and talked for awhile and watched a band ( trio) set up. The music began which was a soft, smooth jazz type of thing..and not too in loud ( Yahoo!) We were able to talk without shouting which to me is a very good thing. Time to go.... Our server came with our checks and returned with our processed payments. Also, it's upscale casual but trying to be a 5-star Michelin restaurant without the menu, service or panache. If you are cool with bribes, they hand out Chuck Bucks and gift cards when you are unhappy with your meal, which happens OFTEN, as Gordon Ramsey once said, If you have to bride people to come to your restaurant you have a serious problem. Vibe: wanna be country club If your under 60 you may feel out of place here unless you're there with your sugar daddy in which case the hotel across the street makes it quite convenient to get your job accomplished all in one spot. And whatever you do don't bring your kids, the owner hates it when kids are there. Amazing! Went with my family for Thanksgiving and everything was lovely! Like beyond lovely! We had a big party with kids and everyone was happy! I know that's not always the case. I went here with some friends, all together there were six of us, out for a special occasion. We were seated quickly since we had reservations. Our server took our order for cocktails while we looked at the menus. Having planned this dinner for a long time, I already knew what was on the menu. I was waiting to see what my other friends would order before I decided on my meal. There were so many fantastic choices! Unfortunately, our server did not ask about appetizers. She went straight to the entree menu, making it super-awkward for those of us who intended to order an appetizer. Since I was not given the option of an appetizer, I ordered the pricey lobster risotto. Fortunately, it was delicious. This is why I'm giving CR's 4 stars. The lobster was buttery and delicious. The risotto was cooked perfectly. At the service, our server did not ask if anyone wanted to order wine. Her inattention was a bit frustrating, since I had planned to order a bottle to share. When I dine at a fine dining places, such as CR's, I fully intend to order a course-based dinner. Cocktail, appetizer, wine, entree, dessert & coffee. I had budgeted about $200 for the meal, which I happily would have spent. At CR's, I ended up with only a skimpy cocktail and the risotto. We are long time customers of this restaurant, and tonight's dinner secured that we won't be going back. The short rib of beef, which is one of their highly recognized menu items was a disaster....so much so, that our meal was comped. The rib was 90% fat, and basically inedible. To say, that this is the first time that our dinner was sub par, is not true, but not so much so that we have sworn never to go back. After tonight, I can honestly say we will not be back. They seem to have a hard time holding on to their chefs and kitchen staff; as evidenced by the quality of food and cooking. Their menu, given that we are on the Seacoast, offers few fish selections, and they are typically over sauced and heavy. To their credit, they were a good and consistent restaurant, but as of the last year, have truly been underwhelming with poor menu selections. read more

HORRIBLE!! DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY! We spent $416 dollars on the worst meal experience of our life. Cocktails were absolutely terrible. First round of drinks tasted as tho they were made by someone who had never made a drink before. 2nd round was a slight improvement . Appetizers were ok at best. Our party of 4 had a total of 3 entrees that were sent back . Two raw salmons were brought out and a raw filet . The tuna entrees were also completely cooked different but ordered the same way and both tasted terrible. My fiancés meal was broughten out raw twice and after the 2nd time the salmon was raw she switch and decided to get the filet which was on the house .. she ordered it well done to be on the safe side after two raw orders .The filet they cooked for her was a joke . Had the consistency of leather and everyone else had finished eating at that point . I honestly don't know what was worst the drinks or the food . The service wasn't great either . Had my first experience at CR's for dinner recently in a group of seven. I was not overly happy with the food in general, and especially not for the prices being charged. If I had to sum up the restaurant in one dish, it would be the $7, ~4 oz machine-made cappuccino that one member of our party received for dessert. Several of the items we ordered arrived as vastly different dishes than we expected from the menu. Popovers turned out to not be popovers at all, they were some kind of very small pastry. Pesto gnocchi was really non-house made gnocchi in cream sauce with some pesto. Steaks, fish, and risotto were all "fine," it's just oddly expensive for what you're actually getting or overly fussy. Plating is dated and lazy. The restaurant is very cute inside (can certainly see why people like it), and waitstaff was fine if a bit awkward at times. It was odd, for example, to not learn of specials until we were in the process of ordering. Empty water glasses were missed and food often arrived piecemeal. This is expensive food served to people who are more interested in feeling pretentious than actually having high quality food. And I had to laugh a bit at their highly-touted selection of 'local' ingredients... many common grocery-store brands that just happened to originate from New England and aren't really all that "local" to the New Hampshire seacoast, like Cabot Creamery dairy from Vermont and Backyard Farms tomatoes from Maine. And while I appreciate the inclusion of Bell & Evans chicken on the menu, someone should point out to these folks that Pennsylvania is not local! read more

This place never disappoints - I go here quite often after work it's always bustling and can be challenging for both parking and seating in the bar. The staff is very friendly and provides just enough space, attentive but not overbearing. I've enjoyed many entrees including salmon and scallops and often have the small plates or salads. This particular night I had the salmon with risotto and cranberry it was very good. Also enjoyed a cosmopolitan that was perfect! I will definitely be back. read more

We went to cr's for the 2nd time last week. We were disappointed-again-as to how expensive everything was considering the small portions. We started at the bar with a glass of wine and a domestic beer and were billed $33. At dinner 2 people ordered the sea scallops. There were 4 on the plate-no sides-and the price was $42. My roast beef was good but the mashed potatoes with it was a smear on the plate. Our friend ordered a cappuccino with dessert (they were out of crème brûlée despite the early hour) which never came but was billed for, and the waitress then and throughout the meal was defensive and making excuses. Let me start out by saying we like to reserve CR's for special occasions, since it is on the pricey side. Last night we arrived with no reservation but were seated promptly without any wait. The restaurant filled up quickly and was quite busy for a Wednesday night. We started with drinks and apps. We ordered the calamari and meatballs. The meatballs I'd recommend, they were moist and delicious. The calamari was average, the dipping sauce was mediocre at best. The portion was also small and barely enough for three people. Moving on to the entree's I ordered the pan seared scallops and they were delicious ( very small portion for the price) my friend had the filet Minot, it was cooked perfectly. My husband asked to hear the specials and was given a description of salmon over a bed of greens. When his meal arrived it was a salad with small pieces of salmon scattered throughout. Usually a dinner special would be a full meal, not a salad. It was the only one they offered. The waitress was also a little surprised and admitted her description was misleading. The manager did come over and offer to replace the meal but by that time we had finished ours. He did take it off the bill and had it packaged to bring home. I have to say it ruined our whole dining experience. My husband left hungry. We won't be visiting anytime soon. read more

One summer night we called every Newburyport high end restaurant praying for a reservation, but as we expected we couldn't get in anywhere. So we decided to look for some NH restaurants close by to try out. We called CR's Restaurant and Averill was the hostess who answered our call. She was polite and ready to assist us in getting a reservation. She said to come on in and she would get us a great table. When we walked into CR's I thought I was in a restaurant somewhere up in the mountains. It was amazing! The lighting, the atmosphere, the staff was top notch. Lisa D. was our server, she was right on point. Recommending the best wine and meals for us. I wish this restaurant would open up a new location in Newburyport, it would blow away all the other ones. We loved the place so much that 2 days later we went to lunch at 12 Noon on a steamy hot August day. Matt was our server. He was also very attentive and offered suggestions on the menu for us. The manager came over to ask how our meal was and we made sure to let him know about our 2 excellent visits (I believe his name was Jerry.) Average at best. While they were indeed busy that evening, there was no shortage of staff around, unfortunately they were not providing good service. Throughout the evening we found no less than four hairs in the food. Ordered the carrot cake for dessert. It was dropped on the table by someone other than our server, and it took at least 15 minutes for her to come over so I could ask for something to eat it with. At the same time I asked her for whipped cream four our Irish Coffees, and she looked at me like she couldn't imagine why I was asking such a thing - frankly it is the first time ever I have been served an Irish Coffee without whipped cream - or at least being asked if I wanted it or not. We called ahead for outside seating and were told no outside reservations were being taken, first come first served and one outside table available at that time. When we arrived, 2 outside tables were open, but we were told they had begun taking outdoor reservations in the past half hour since we'd called and nothing was now available. We are frequent flyers at CR's every Thursday for Happy Hour and dinner at the bar. The quality of food, the attitude of the staff and the ambiance are always top notch. After saying that, we decided to go for Thanksgiving after cooking for 3 days for everyone else. The thought of any more turkey was mind numbing. We arrived at our usual 4pm. The place was full of guests, but we had a reservation at the bar. Needless to say, the menu had everything one could imagine including a wonderful looking traditional Thanksgiving Turkey dinner. I opted for the Rack of Lamb and Pat decided on the Prime Rib preceded by a special harvest bisque soup. While waiting we ordered some bread and were treated to some Parker House rolls perfectly baked and warm. We honestly have not had meals that can top our dinners. Both the Prime Rib and Lamb were perfectly cooked. Keith and Annie were our bar staff and as always were friendly, entertaining, warm and welcoming. Emily and Jerry, the managers, stopped by to chat and we passed on a well done to the kitchen staff. Thank you Chuck for making our Thanksgiving memorable. read more

What a wonderful experience. The food was top notch and the service was prompt and friendly. The atmosphere is upscale without being pretentious. We started with the homemade lobster Rangoon. They were large and crunchy and packed with lobster. My husband had the chicken piccata and I have the hangar steak with truffled homemade gnocchi. Both were excellent. The chicken was tender and the steak was a perfect medium rare. We also enjoyed the espresso chocolate creme brûlée which was light and delicious. The price was certainly well worth it. We go to CR's quite often and the food is consistently good! Stopped there for lunch around 1 pm on Friday 8/11 we were looking forward to the Lobster Cobb Salad that we usual get but were told 10 minutes after we ordered that they ran out of Lobster?????....That is just not acceptable for an upscale eatery and the waitress should have known that before we ordered. Ended up changing our order to Salads with Shrimp but it's certainly not the same!! Also, ordered a cup of Clam Chowder which was more like Soup and absent of Clams but the main reason for the 3 Stars was the "Sorry, we ran out of Lobster" !!
