I can specifically recommend the grinder and chai (but all of the other coffee we tried was great as well). The breakfast sandwiches were slightly blander than I would have liked, but they were still good and certainly fresh. The staff were very polite and professional. As for the décor, I appreciate the art calling back the history of the building as a feed mill. Overall, the restaurant both inside and out gives a modern-rustic feeling.

The Rwandan was delicious and the roast complimented the natural expression of the beans. My dad got the Ugandan which was awesome as well. I grabbed a bag of the Salvadoran beans to take home, and it brews up an amazingly clean and interesting cup (I used a V60). One of the better cafes I've visited in the U.S. with a roaster that knows what they're doing. On top of all that, the tahini date banana bread we tried was seriously good and wasn't a premade, mass produced baked good like so many cafes have resorted to in recent years. On top of that, the cafe was beautiful with reclaimed wood tables. We were traveling with our dog and they allowed her in because she was well-behaved. There were plenty of outlets along the walls, which made it relatively easy to study. There was a lot of foot traffic, but the overall ambiance did not get too rowdy, providing pleasant white noise. There were a few seasonal specials, but otherwise the selection was not very large. The tea selection was rather small, especially considering it is part of their name. Drinks came out extremely quickly. There was a dish tub near the entrance to drop items off after finishing. I tried their seasonal egg nog cappuccino, and it came out lightly warm. The egg foam was not overwhelming and the spiced notes were well incorporated into the drink. It was not too sweet and gave me a pleasant buzz. I hope to see more diverse tea options in the future, but the overall feel and quality of this cafe were great.

In fact, I thought that a place called "The Kind Cafe" might appreciate someone supporting another local business. Instead, I was told to cover up my coffee with a sleeve. It struck me as a very odd request, but I complied anyway. After that, the experience became increasingly uncomfortable. I overheard the barista making comments to other customers such as, "Thanks for choosing our place for your drink order." Given the context, it felt very clearly directed at me. The comment was made publicly, in front of other customers, and came across as an attempt to shame me for bringing in a coffee from somewhere else. Then he asked me what kind of drink I had gotten. After I answered, he responded, "Oh, I thought it was something special," with a tone that felt sarcastic and dismissive. At that point, I asked him directly whether I had offended him by bringing in a coffee from another business. He told me that outside drinks were not allowed but delivered the message with an attitude that felt unnecessarily hostile. I explained that I had never been informed of this policy and genuinely did not know. I also told him that I felt he was trying to make me feel bad about it. His response was essentially, "I wasn't trying to make you feel bad, but whatever." The policy itself is not the issue. Had someone politely informed me that outside drinks were not allowed, I would have respected that immediately. What bothered me was being publicly embarrassed and treated with passive-aggressive disrespect over what was clearly an innocent mistake. I've been a regular customer for years and order from this place nearly every week. This was the first time I had ever brought in a coffee from somewhere else. Being treated this way by both the owner and the main barista was disappointing and completely at odds with the values this business claims to represent. For a place that calls itself "The Kind Cafe," this was one of the least kind customer interactions I've experienced in a long time. Perhaps this is an opportunity for some reflection on what kindness actually feels like from the customer's side of the counter.
