But when you're visiting a city, stop in to support one local biz, and that biz owner asks if you've been to Charleston Bread...well, you know you have to go. Honestly I was full at this point, as I had been to a coffee shop, cake shop, and market. But when in Charleston...I walked in and immediately the aroma captivated me. It was as if every oven had opened simultaneously, as the smell of cookies and breads and spices all entranced me. Two others were ahead of me and when I mentioned it was my first time, they had plenty of recommendations. I could tell this was sage advice being sent my way. I also noticed, on their menu, that the sourdough bread had "Charleston" in front of it. So I inquired about the difference between theirs and others, if any. The head baker came up and explained how the elevation, temperature, and water all effect the starter which in turn effects the final dough which produces each loaf. And yes, I did leave with a loaf (along with a number of other items). I gave myself about a hour (and the walk back to my hotel) to work up appetite so I could fully enjoy this experience. Then, I devoured everything. Delicious, perfect textures, and the longing that I wish I lived closer. If you are within a hour of this place stop in!

Technically outside of the farmer's market, this bakery is nonetheless a reasonable stop as the…read moremarket isn't big on bread. This place takes preorders but also had a good selection of loaves and sweets relatively late in the day. Fresh pasta was available as well. My needs were not huge, but I walked out with some appealing pastries. An oatmeal chocolate chip cookie (yes, it's both) was well-received, and my cinnamon roll was tasty if not as moist as I'd hoped. An almond croissant delivered sweet almond paste and a buttery crust. They weren't transcendent, but they were satisfying.

Everything we tried was soft, fresh, and flavorful without being overly sweet, which I really appreciated. You can tell this is the kind of place that's been doing things the same (and doing them well) for a long time. The prices were also surprisingly great, and had they been listed, I would have purchased a lot more. It's a small, old-school bakery that's clearly been a local favorite for generations, and that charm is part of what makes it special. That said, as first-time visitors, it was a little tough to navigate. Nothing is labeled, no menu, no prices, so we had to ask a few questions and rely on recommendations. Maybe it was just a busy Saturday morning, but the young woman helping us didn't seem thrilled that I was taking photos and asking about the pastries. I get that most of their customers are probably regulars who already know what they want, but for those of us just passing through, a little guidance (and patience) would go a long way. Even with that experience, I'd still recommend stopping by. The pastries really are that good, the prices are fair, and it's the kind of nostalgic, old fashioned bakery that's getting harder to find these days.

My son has never tasted the heavenly goodness of a Sugar Pie cupcake, so I decided to try that drive-thru out and let him give this bakery a whirl on the tastemobile. David got the oreo cupcake. He has not ranked any restaurant below a 9 so far and there were no surprises in his verdict this time. His eyes got big as saucers as he took the first bite and he yelled, "There are oreos IN the cupcake! And this icing is so soft and fluffy, oh my gosh! Ten out of ten! Ten out of ten!" My child literally put the cupcake up to my face and squealed, "See the pieces of oreos, mom?!?" I wish he was as equally enthused about cleaning his room or taking a shower... I got the chocolate peanut butter cupcake. I agree that it was mighty tasty. I've had Sugar Pie before, so I wasn't as excited as David. Of course, I don't think anyone is as excited as my son when it comes to good food! :) If you've never had Sugar Pie Bakery cupcakes, cookies, pepperoni rolls or anything else on their yummy menu, I suggest that you stop by and check them out. It is definitely a more convenient location and you can drop in after a trip to Target or Best Buy. You can purchase individual cupcakes for $3, or by them by the half dozen or dozen.
