Crush Cider Cafe was on my list to try and was a stop we made on our last trip to Hood River. Upon arrival we saw the cider menu and wanted to make sure we got ciders that this particular cidery made. So we tried a few by getting a taster tray. We got a sweet one and two others that were more on the dryer side. They weren't bad but all three had an after taste we couldn't quite pin down. In the end we thought it was maybe the kind of apples they uses or perhaps it was something they used or a method they used during the preparation process that made the difference but it was unfamiliar to us and we weren't sure what we thought about it. We ordered also from the appetizer part of the menu and got hushpuppies and liked those a lot. It had a dipping sauce, sort of a chili sauce you see at Asian restaurants that made a nice touch to this appetizer. The ladies that were working here were super nice and friendly. So with the good service and food Crush comes in at a solid four stars. read more

This was perfect after a day of driving out to the gorge and hiking. They've set up a nice covered area in the parking lot with gas fire pits that are nice and warm, and socially distanced. As for the food, this is a place for porkatarians! We ended up having pork 3 ways, and I don't think they had any other meat on the menu, but there are vegetarian options. I cannot emphasize this enough: everything was perfectly seasoned, nothing was too salty. We got the rosti, which is a delightful sliced roasted potato dish with onions and bacon. Potatoes were well cooked, it comes out on a cast iron plate, cozy and warm. The carnitas flatbread was pleasantly thin and crisp and the cheese was gooey. Very satisfying. Finally, we had chili verde--you have the option of having it on potatoes or rice; we went for the former. It was hearty but not heavy because of the tanginess of the tomatillos. The pork was tender. It comes with a big hunk of cornbread that was quite unique, it was almost like a scone, I think with some orange peel essence, it was tasty! We also got a 3 cider flight--they make a lot of their own, but offer some from other cideries. We only ordered ones made by Crush--Comice, COG (cranberry orange guava), and blackberry. Whenever I'm in Hood River, I stop at Crush for a cold Cider. They make their own and have an excellent variety from dry to sweet and everything in between, each Infused with different fruits and essence, some have ginger or habanero to give them a kick of heat. My faves are the pear and the habanero. I've never been a beer drinker, don't like hops, but give me a hard cider and I'm super happy! So it was wonderful to discover Crush where Cider is king, their reason for existence, not just an offering of one or two to round out 50 Beers on tap. But wait, it gets better! They have killer Mexican food that is just as crave-worthy! With picnic tables out front, it's the perfect place to stop for a flight of cider and some really good eats. I'd have given a 5 star, but the ice on the apple cider slush was so coarse it have us all the worst brain freezes of my life... Ok, I sound like a total whiner, but I've never gotten this kind of pain from a food or beverage and I've been in hot sauce challenges, drank 151 in younger years, but this.. man, it hit my spine!! The food looked yummy and authentically Mexican, oddly.. the little quesadilla taco things where identical to the boarder stands it eat as a kid in Mexico. It pains me to write this review. One of the highlights of our trips to Hood River, has always been our visit to Crush for their ciders and their delicious food. This trip, things were different and I walked away a bit disappointed. Their outdoor seating was very nice, a warm tent with fire pit tables, overhead heaters, cushions for the benches and rocks heated by the warmth of the fire pit for hand warmers. Sam was very attentive in making sure that everyone was comfortable. Our favorite ciders of the 17 they offered (we tasted all 17) was the COG, and the Jamaica ("Ha-my-Kah"), the others were not to our liking. Our tablemate is not a cider drinker and couldn't find one he liked. So overall, good atmosphere. The food, as well as the cider, was what really drew us back on each visit and we were eagerly anticipating the delicious offerings again. The first time we came here, a few years after they opened, they had the best tamales at really good prices, our next visit a year or so later, the tacos were flavorsome and delicious, priced to make you want to order more ciders to pair with your tacos. This trip, I was actually very disappointed. The flavor was just not there and the prices for the food had more then doubled (our last visit was 4 years ago). This was actually the most expensive restaurant we ate at during our four day trip and the food I expected to enjoy the most but actually didn't enjoy. It was good, but just lacking in seasoning and that "wow" factor. I was hoping the first night was just a "one-off", but our second night we ate there, we still had that bland kind of feeling. This is one of the only places where you will find so many ciders in one place to choose from, go spend an evening there sipping and tasting and enjoying yourself. How do you spend Memorial Day weekend in Hood River and White Salmon and not visit a brewery? Easily: Come here instead. Listen, I love Everybody's Brewing (best view in the Gorge), Full Sail (though the new "Mexican" lager gives me pause), Pfriem (yeah, because a region with no beer lines desperately needs a place with a half-hour wait), and Double Mountain (great West Coast IPAs, a fine attempt at NJ pizza, and no fear of kicking out feral children). But on a holiday weekend, all of the above are absolute death. I'd been to Crush before and kind of love its secluded spot near Insitu. I've gone by, sampled some ciders, had a sandwich from the deli next door and wondered aloud why people try to make East Coast food without the right ingredients. But Crush knows how to meet every drinker where they're at. Don't like the dozen or so house ciders? Here are a few from Avid, Carlton, and elsewhere. Don't like the samples you tried on their own? They'll blend a few for you and even layer some frozen cider on top. Don't like the look of their menu or the deli? The Mexican pop-up has adobada sopes that have no peers for miles. The owners are helpful, but within reason. They'll try to get you to taste a bit of everything, throw in a free sample if they feel you're missing something that agrees with your palate, and make suggestions based on what you liked and didn't like. My family and I have enjoyed coming here for the last year or so, and we took the leap and became members of the cidery this time around. My wife bought a growler (actually a large, branded Nalgene bottle), my local family will be picking up a handful of bottles every quarter (and getting free tastings), and I'll be tasting something new each time I come back every few months or so. It's hard for a cidery or cider shop to meet folks where they're at in a beer town, but Crush makes the effort to do just that. Even if you strike out on every cider in the place, they'll hand you a Weissbier or IPA and point you up the hill to Full Sail or Double Mountain. They want customers to be happy enough to become regulars, and they have our business for as long as they want it. read more
