This review is for the West Boylston Street location. I hadn't been here in years, and stopped back in and was pleasantly surprised. It was bigger than I remembered, with more seating available. Not a ton... but at least 6-7 / seating arrangements. Got a loaf of sourdough sliced to go and a cookie.. both were delicious and served with a smile. The cheese danish was to die for - so delicious with flaky pastry. The plain croissants were amazing. And the sandwich can out steaming hot. Needed to wait a little before having it but it was so good. The sandwich was buttery & perfect. My 9 month old LOVED the plain croissants and the cheese danish was a hit. My mom and I stopped in today for the first time. The person working was very knowledgeable and attentive to all of their patrons. My mom and I both got the chocolate almond croissant. It may have been one of the best thing we've ever had. The middle was filled with chocolate and almond paste, the croissant dough was flaky and buttery and topped with a ton of slivered almonds. We would absolutely go back again for it. I also tried one of their specialty drinks. I got the Caramel delight coffee, which you can get hot or cold. I did check in to this location on Yelp and they claim to offer 5% off for first purchase. When Crust first opened, it's pastries and breads were sophisticated. It offered unique items, much in the way that many high-end bakeries in Boston and Prividence do. But as time went on, they went the same route as many of the other bakeries in the area, focusing on the sugar and making what'seasy,, and paying less attention to the flavor and processes of good bakers. For example, I once asked why they don't sell brioche anymore, and was told the bakers don't like to make it. Gone are the days of kuign amann. The real thing was so delicious. Then they started stuffing it with sugary, flavored goo. Now, they don't offer it. Their scones now have the texture of muffins. And there are muffins, just like every other bakery. They don't make products that call for skilled bakers who make artisanal offerings. Their bakery items are average, over-priced for what they are, and not worth the visit. read more

For a bakeshop they don't make or offer very much and it's more a cafe than a bakery; think Starbucks or Dunkin but far less appealing and options. Tried their breakfast sandwiches and we were less than impressed -- Sausage/egg/cheese bagel & bacon/egg/cheese croissant. The food looked and tasted pre-made, like those found and heated up at chain motel breakfast. Essentially, flavourless fast food heated up by non-cooks with low hygiene standards; hair not tied up with no hairnet or gloves. Staff also looked unkempt, because they had no uniform or any meaningful dress code... trendy street clothes with rips and holes doesn't equate to professional business attire. If they increased their food/professionalism/hygiene standards maybe, just maybe it'll be worth coming here again... until then, we'll save our money for better options. read more

My husband and I come here pretty often. We find it's the best place to get a latte and pastry in Worcester. Usually you have to sacrifice the quality of the baked food for the coffee. We like crust but since we come so often we notice how inconsistent it is. The almond croissant is always a different size, the muffins are either the best ever or dry and raw in areas. Crust has a really fun seasonal coffee menu with all the delicious fall flavors. I got a pumpkin cheesecake latte that was scrumptious. They have dairy alternatives, which is a big plus. My family and I stopped in yesterday for the first time while visiting a local college. Only one person was working there and she was very kind, but I felt bad for her; she was barista, cashier, and food prep, so although it's a tiny shop some people had to wait a minute or two to order their croissants because she was making our sandwiches. We ordered both a latte-type drink (very good!) and less sweet espresso drinks, perfectly fine. The Americanos were "nuclear hot," my son said. I'd give those 4 or 5 stars; the coffee drinks. I feel like coffee prices were.mid-$5 range with flavoring? Reasonable. I would have tried their baguettes-- the breads looked amazing- but were were just there for breakfast. The food, though, was what I'd call disappointing; I put some responsibility for that on how it was prepped, and some of it on the fact that some of the pastries for the day were delivered while we were there (7:30am-ish?) and were clearly already over-cooked on delivery. (Noticeably more overdone than what was already in the case.) So she was already working with over-baked pastries for a chunk of what was delivered on 4/23/25. We ordered two bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches. The bacon was so well done that it was on the edge of burned, or maybe actually burned, and mine was on a croissant, and the croissant was absolutely burned. (Black in places.) Instead of toasting the bread(s) for the breakfast sandwich first and then adding the egg and cheese, it looked like it was re-toasted (extensively?) AFTER putting on the egg and cheese. My croissant egg-and-cheese sandwich was so burned and hot I couldn't even pick it up for a few minutes due to heat, and the flavor of the croissant absolutely tasted burned, with black bits crunchy and flakin off, so it came apart in my hands and I gave up on eating it at all. Maybe she let the sandwiches cook while making our lattes, I don't know, but for a sandwich that was about $9, it was a big disappointment, and I'm a little surprised she serve it at all with that level of it being over-done. The bagel breakfast sandwich likewise had overcooked bacon and slightly burnt edges of the bagel, but not nearly as charred as the croissant. My husband also said he thought his (non-toasted) chocolate croissant was from yesterday; must have tasted a bit stale, and we were there, again, shortly after opening, so maybe they hadn't gotten today's deliveries. After all, they open very early, which is great, at 7am. Since I was hungry after not eating the burned breakfast sandwich, I ordered a separate plain croissant for comparison. This one, too, seemed overdone, but not burned, and I admit that the inside was wonderfully buttery, as a true croissant should be-- inside was not dry at all. So had it not been overall overdone, that croissant could also have been a 4/5. I'd definitely be willing to go back for the coffee, and I would go back again to give her a second chance, just to try the pastries or bread (not with a breakfast sandwich, just straight from the case) or the scones, the danishes looked very tasty too; maybe she just got a particularly overdone delivery. That said, compared to some of the other great reviews, this was one of the worst-prepared breakfast sandwiches (with quality ingredients!) I've seen in a long time. I think she was just between a rock and a hard place that morning. But if I were her, I would have re-made that croissant sandwich (at that level of burned) rather than serving it. read more

If the coffee was better, this would be a 5 star review. Crust has fantastic pastries and bread. I absolutely love their almond croissants and they taste like they're made with butter, not oils. They even think about their customers as I was asked if the almond and regular croissant could go in the same bag. That extra attention to detail was appreciated. Their coffee is subpar. I can get better coffee at Starbucks for a similar price. All I bought was a vanilla latte, but I couldn't taste any vanilla and the coffee was super weak. We went to the main st location. My biggest call out is that we wanted to sit and eat and that location is a little tight so if it had been busier it may have harder to sit and eat. One star for their royal icing cookies, especially around Valentine's Day. Perfectly crumbly, excellent icing work, and always very cute. The rest...it's just consistently mid, and I resent that that quality of items has affected Birchtree now as well, going so far as to basically replace or augment most of Birchtree's recipes with items delivered by Crust, where Birchtree once had an extremely unique baking program. It's so obvious now because they even have the same cookie cutter Thanksgiving menu. I used to enjoy hitting up both stores for their unique wares for the holidays (especially Birchtree's chocolate rye cookies) and now it's just uniform across the board. Finally, it is always infuriating to order from them on Toast Tab, everything is either out of stock, not updated, or lagging. Classic example of expanding WAY too soon and too much. Worcester benefits from small independent bakeries, not bakery chains, and if you're consistently recycling menus and items across three locations, there's no excuse to have any website or ordering difficulties. Items tried: peach cheesecake kouign amann, cookies, croissants, breakfast sandwiches, brownies (I do like their raspberry brownie), Mayan Mocha iced coffee (RIP), pretzels, mac and cheese (bleu cheese has no place in this dish although toasted croissant on top is smart), apple cider donut (baked, not fried), 'what's in the box' (5x items for $27), churro croissant (very airy), other various items since 2016. Ultimately, Crust is indicative of an unfortunate trend I have dubbed the 'Rocco's effect' where laziness and expansion prevails over innovation, small-batch curation, and aiming to have a market chokehold in lieu of letting others thrive. So many other cities succeed at this and have a magnificent bakery scene, and I am continually left wishing we could sustain the same. read more

Located on the Lincoln Square end of Main Street, it provides an array of artisan breads, pastries, bagels, sandwiches and croissants and oh are they good. This is a great off the beaten path coffee shop bakery. They can make beverages with non dairy milks. This is the second location for the well known bakery on Main Street in Worcester. Hey, someone's business is EXPANDING during a pandemic! They are doing something right. All breads are scratch made and so artistically done. The danishes are my favorite with nice, sweet layers. And, oh, they use butter! What a concept. When you bite into a crisp croissant and it's not very flavorful, ask yourself, "Do I taste butter?" Because croissants MUST have butter, there is no substitute. And Crust clearly does not substitute. These croissants are delicious! They are open until 5 pm, which is nice. The location is the former Starbucks location. And thank God, because drinking Starbucks is.....never mind. Crust has excellently sourced coffee. read more

This is for the West Boylston Street location- I have gone to Crust a couple times in the past few months- their food is good but their customer service is awful. First time I went I bought almost $50 worth of baked goods to bring to work with me and I was the only customer in the store. Felt incredibly pressured to make choices, no one barely looked at me and certainly didn't say thank you after I spent a ridiculous amount of money there. Went again today- no greeting, awful customer services, we were there around 930am, went to use the restroom and absolutely no toilet paper. They asked my fiancé what size drink I ordered, because they apparently couldn't pay attention when I ordered. When we left I let them know the ladies room needed service and they barely looked at me when I spoke to them. Never coming back, no matter how good the food might be. read more

The location is pretty good, they have outdoor seating which is a plus, but they don't have indoor seating as of this time, which is a bummer when it gets chilly. This gets a 4/5. One thing that I have to point out is the coffee. It's really bad. Now, I am a coffee afficianado and I know not to expect the best coffee because this place focused more on the bakery aspect, but... The coffee is trash. I ordered a small cappuccino and the cup was filled up to a quarter. Now I should've noticed this sign. As I took a sip all I could think of was popcorn, bitter, and acid. I couldn't finish the coffee and my wife couldn't finish it either. This is something that the owners really need to fix. Coffee gets a 1/5. The sandwich was okay. I order a ham egg and cheese and there was ham missing. The egg was nicely cooked. The crescant was kind of stale, and should've been fresh. Sandwich gets a 2/5. Now, I won't be back to this place unless it's the only thing open, It's better to make folgers coffee at home, the only thing worse than this coffee is the coffee from "fuel america". They have two locations but I've only been to the west boylston street location. Very small with no indoor seating but there is some outdoor seating. I don't drink coffee, so I can't speak to that but the chai and teas have been really good. They have loads of pastries, breads, and breakfast sandwiches. The seemingly wholesome story behind Crust is what got me through the doors in the Main St. location this morning--but the actual experience is what'll keep me away. Upon entrance, there was no greeting from the worker behind the counter, only a dead stare. Being that no other customers were present and the space is quite small, I was slightly uncomfortable from the onset. After quickly selecting an order from the menu, I was told numerous times that things were out of stock: ALL of their bagels, most croissants (besides chocolate), ham, & tomato for sandwiches, etc. I understand being out of one or two things, but the main inventory that makes up your menu--and on a weekend? While waiting for the order, I watched as the employee (who was dressed as if they just got out of bed) making the sandwiches FaceTimed on the phone with a friend. It was so unprofessional and unsettling that I just wanted to get out of there ASAP. As for the coffees, I ordered one small and one large but received two of one size, unsure of what it was TBH but I didn't really care. The woman that helped me was awesome and she pointed me toward the best danish I've had in my life. I also got an iced coffee- not my style of coffee, so I'm not going to knock them for that. It's very bold. The cheese danish was flaky with a balanced sweetness and it was the size of my head. I was completely impressed with this place. That being said, a weekend will bring less product depending on what time you go in because the bake shop cannot bake infinity items. They will run out because their stuff is so good!!
