Not that they need my review because they will be awesome whether or not I write this but ... If you can't get to Bova's on the North End for cannolis, these guys do a pretty damn good job. Wholeheartedly recommend them for cannolis. I have tried their other desserts, but hands down the go-to dessert here are the cannolis (and I have had all the flavors - favorite, pistachio). I like that they have the mini ones. And of course the staff people are a delight and are always able to direct you and advise on the other desserts they have there. read more

Gerardo's has been our go to bakery for years. High quality baked good ranging from cakes, cupcakes, and cookies to name a few items. Offerings available from sheet cakes all the way to wedding cakes. Our visits have always been pleasant. They even do Grubhub which has been very handy for some of the holidays when the store is very busy at times, I can just order delivery and skip the wait and madness in store. read more

I really wanted to like this place but was extremely disappointed. The turnovers are small pies. The large cookies are underbaked; there should not be a glob of dough in the middle. This happens when somebody with limited knowledge pops them in the oven and sets the timer. The biscotti are cookies, not biscotti. The edges are flowed out, that is what happens when you slice chilled dough and bake it once. There is no way that those cases are filled with fresh items, the place does not have the customer traffic to support that. Anybody baking there probably are following some instructions and have limited knowledge of actual baking. I should bring some of those items to the North End or Tuscan Market and get an opinion on them. I wish that there was a good bakery to get quality items close to home, but I didn't find it. Just kind of ok. It is your typical Italian pastry/bakery with a loudmouth operator. It benefits solely from being one of the bigger places around. Most of it is junk aside from cannolis. This location has roughly the same selection as the other stores, but with indoor seating in case you want to eat your dessert right away. I visited Gerardo's Italian Bakery on a quiet Tuesday evening around 7 PM, driven by all the online buzz, especially about their cannoli. I over indulged myself to four desserts: 1. Chocolate-dipped pistachio cannoli 2. Double chocolate cheesecake 3. Raspberry cheesecake 4. Chocolate dipped lobster tail Each dessert was beautifully presented and showed serious attention to detail. The cannoli was made fresh in front of me, the shell crisp and topped with chocolate chips, crushed pistachios, and a white chocolate drizzle. The filling wasn't traditional; more of a dense whipped cream than a ricotta-based pistachio, but it was tasty, not too sweet, and really well balanced. The double chocolate cheesecake was elegant and rich, though I expected a bit more chocolate intensity. The texture was slightly curd-like, possibly due to ricotta or mascarpone instead of cream cheese, but it was still a decadent bite. Not overly sweet, which I appreciated. The raspberry cheesecake was tall, proud, and satisfying. I was hoping the raspberry would be swirled in, but it sat more as a topping, still enjoyable, just not fully integrated flavor-wise. The chocolate dipped lobster tail was the surprise. The pastry was crisp but not tough, dipped in chocolate and filled with that same dense whipped cream. I had expected maybe fruit or mascarpone inside, but the shell freshness and chocolate crunch totally made up for it. The bakery itself is bright, clean, and welcoming; like stepping into an upscale Italian pastry shop on a cobblestone street. There are a few small tables inside and highup charming 3D wall applications that make you feel like you're in an Italian piazza. Even though it was late in the day, staff were super friendly and attentive. Two employees helped me right away, and as more customers arrived, the service team grew like magic; ready for everyone. I didn't try anything savory, but they had pizza slices and a few other options made and ready from earlier in the day. I'd love to see them offer house-made gelato in the summer; it would be the perfect companion to their pastries. Overall, this place reminded me of La Fiorentina in Springfield, but with even more atmosphere. I'll absolutely be back; and I'm recommending it right here to you. Before an event, I visited the store. It was STRONGLY SUGGESTED that I pre-order a cake rather than getting it just prior to the party. I wanted an italian cream cake that they always have availalbe. Oh my!! Such a beautiful bakery with so many wonderful looking desserts. I bought my husband's birthday cake here. It was an Oreo cake. He and our guests said it was delicious. The staff was friendly and promptly came over to help us. There were beautiful pastry platers available to purchase and so many other fine looking cakes, cookies, cannoli and much more. We are absolute fans of Gerardo's and their products. Had my first disappointment yesterday with a sheet cake for my grandson's baptism. We ordered a special strawberry ricotta filling and instead it had the Italian cream filling, the same as the frosting. It happens. But when contacting the store (the manager was lovely and professional) I was told to send an email and picture and the owner would decide if we would get a credit. It was an $85 cake that was so sweet with all the white filling many people didn't finish it. I expected an offer of 50 percent refund or credit would be fair, because it was incorrect and not what was ordered, wrong is wrong. I had ordered a cake a few days earlier and came by to pick it up. The cake was done on time and made to order the way it was described. The taste was delicious, very lightly battered with rich cream. Really good! While I was there, I had to try some of the delicious looking sweets. I went for the chocolate covered cherry ball as well as a chocolate eclair. Both were exquisite! I noticed another customer was picking up this ultra cute engagement cake with a huge fondant engagement ring. I wish I would've taken a photo of it because it was so magical! They have three convenient locations in central Mass to choose from: Boylston, Westboro, and Shrewsbury. I believe the Boylston location is the largest though, with the most amount of selections. Don't waste your time to go to North end. This is supposed to go. Everything from the cannolis, lobster claw, and cakes are far superior to anything You can pick up at Modern or Mike's pastries. Went to Gerardo's for a second time hoping that the first time was a fluke. Years ago I went and ordered several pastries and was severely disappointed with all of them. The second time I limited myself to a mini lobster tail dipped in chocolate. Severely disappointed yet again. It looked very good with good chocolate coverage and the crème looked tasty. That was about the extent of it he "good". The chocolate was average at best, the crunch part of the lobster tail was actually chewy. The flavor of the pastry was outright awful. Gerardo's Italian Bakery did my wedding cake in September 2019, and it was both beautiful and delicious. The guests are still talking about it, and I think about it at least once a week. Choosing our wedding cake was a breeze. If you can't find time to make an appointment with Gerardo, you can purchase a tasting tray of 14 different kinds of cakes. I highly recommend enjoying them with a cappuccino in the bakery. The bakery itself is absolutely whimsical and beautiful. 10/10. Love this place. read more

We get our cakes for special celebrations from here. They have always showed outstanding work they put on their cakes! This time we made an order of a chocolate cake with chocolate mousse filling, and our cake theme was a construction. I made the order over phone and they have made it beyond our expectations by putting trees, rocks and dirts. We've added little construction toys on top later on. Absolutely love this place and have to come here every time I am in Boylston. It shares the same building as Oli's Italian Eatery. Literally you can get your Italian food fix and get your Italian dessert fix in the same building! I finished most of my pasta and decided to walk over. I forgot how many dessert options that they have. From cakes, pies, turnovers, cupcakes, cookies, and eveything in between!! Think of it and they probably have it! I looked through all of the options and decided on cookies, but then I missed their beautiful, flavorful, and sweet lemoncello cake squares. So, I decided to get one of the cake squares and one of their lemon cookies. Everything in their bakery is homemade and you can taste it from the first bite to the last one. Their desserts leave you yearning and wanting more! I wish that I lived in Boylston so I was able to get my Gerardo's fix all the time!! Items containing cream really need to be fresh to be good and considering the prices of these items I would expect nothing less. When inquiring if the staff when the items were made the reply was "I don't know. Sometime last week". This leads me to another question, what is done with all of this stale pastry? I wish I could rate this place ZERO stars after my experience with them. They ruined my birthday and refused to fix the cake or refund us. My husband ordered a heart cake, he provided them with the picture (half black, half flowers) as shown below. They stated they do not do black cakes so he requested it to be pink or purple. The day of my birthday dinner his brother picked up the cake and we were mortified. We had to order another cake from a different bakery. Luckily the other bakery was very professional unlike Gerardo's staff who didn't even greet us when we walked in. We received a call from staff after a complaint was made and were told "it is hard to do a heart shaped cake and we do not do refunds". I DO NOT recommend this place at all. Even Walmart can do a heart cake. Hannaford was kind enough to do a cake for us the same day with black frosting. Please save yourself the headache and look at the pictures below. They couldn't even get the letters straight. If you're a person of color just avoid this place. Hannaford will actually greet you when you walk in. :) read more
