I tend not to enjoy grape leaves due to the "mushy" texture but these were perfect...almost...creamy(?) and very flavorful. The hummus and yogurt/cucumber sauce is amazing as well. Everything here is fresh and delicious. I am a hummus snob as i will only eat theirs. The tomato tabouli is so delicious. The have a wonderful selection of spices, wine, to go foods, cheese, prepared salads, olives, pastry, bread and soups. We have used them for catering also. They carry flour from Italy which is flour without all the GMO and pesticides. read more

Great place to go to if you want specialty items you won't get in most markets. On top of that they have some great prepared items (love the sausage roll), an an incredibly helpful team to help you pick out deli items or cheeses, and you just get a nice relaxed feel for the whole place. They also usually have some specials around holidays like Christmas and Easter which are definitely worth it. Love this place! read more

If you like to cook Middle Eastern or Indian food, this place is the best! I first started shopping at Ed Hyder's when I couldn't find Halloumi cheese anywhere else. Since then I've gone back almost every week. I cook a lot of Middle Eastern food and Indian food, and they have so many spices and ingrediants that I need. Heck, they even have some of the ingrediants I need for my Mexican recipes! I find it difficult to find chorizo sausage for tacos (not the cured/dried kind, but the kind I can squeeze out of the sausage and fry up in a pan for taco filling). Shaws and Star Market will sometimes carry this, but I can't tell you how many times I've driven to one of them just to find out there's no chorizo. And in a pinch I can sub sweet Italian sausage, but come on....that's not the same. Well, Ed Hyder's consistently has chorizo in their frozen case! :D Ed Hyder's also carries preserved lemon. I know I could preserve my own lemon, but I'd rather buy it already done. I can't find preserved lemon anywhere else. Other ingrediants I have trouble finding elsewhere: -canned piquillo peppers -semolina flour -chickpea flour -canned fava beans -canned chipotle peppers in Adobo sauce (Price Chopper usually has these, but can be iffy with Shaws and Market Basket and I don't want to drive all the way to PC for one thing). -Ethopian Berbere spice -Cardamom pods -Coriander seeds -Medjool dates -premade shakshuka sauce (I usually make this myself, but it's nice to have a lazy option on hand lol) Their spice selection is wonderful! I only wish the berbere came in bigger bags. Those tiny little bags they sell it in, I use up almost an entire bag for one recipe. Ed Hyder's, do y'all know how much Ethiopians like their berbere? And it says Ethiopian right on the bag lol Please set out some bigger bags! But that's my only complaint. Overall, their spice selection is awesome. Also love their cheese selection, love their homemade pita chips, and love their tahini selection! Now, I don't have trouble finding tahini in any grocery store. But it's nice to have some authentic tahini and have a few different kinds to choose from, rather than just one sad bottle of O Organics tahini squished in with the peanut butter. A huge portion of their store is devoted to wine and beer. Personally I couldn't care less and almost never buy alcohol at Ed Hyders. I actually think it would be cool if more of their limited space was devoted to obscure/difficult to find ingrediants. But I can see why all the alcohol might be a good business move for them to bring traffic in. The store also carries many staple items that I'll usually grab if I'm in there anyway. Stuff like rolled oats, flour, bread flour, etc (all sold by the pound). All-in-all this store is awesome. Exactly what a specialty store should be. Loads of high quality ingrediants that large grocery stores may not always have on hand, friendly and helpful staff, and a website that actually works! You can search beforehand to see if Ed Hyder's carries what you need. Love this place! I'm sure Ed Hyder's doesn't need my input, but if I ran Ed Hyder's I'd ditch the alcohol and devote the space to more staple Middle Eastern and Indian ingrediants. I'd also add more ingrediants for Mexican food. I'd throw in another fridge for some fresh veggies, peppers and potaotoes and beets, fresh ginger root, fresh turmeric. I'd also start selling cookbooks and hosting cooking classes a couple of times a month. I'm sure their business is doing fine and all. I'm just giving my two cents on what Ed Hyder's would look like in MY best life lol But five stars. It's always a treat to visit this place :) read more

Ed Hyder's Mediterranean Market is a gourmet oasis on Pleasant Street in Worcester, Massachusetts. One can find many savory foods here. As the name implies, it has a Middle Eastern/Mediterranean influence. I buy different items here. They have a wonderful variety of pita breads here. You can also get zat'aar bread, a flat thyme bread that is flavorful. The feta cheese pie is also great. I buy a vegetarian kibbee made with eggplant. Here you can purchase tasty baba ganoush and hummus. Ed's famous middle age spread is a wonderful appetizer to put on your favorite cracker. You can get marinated lamb shish kebabs that are tender. Ed Hyder's has a great assortment of gourmet cheeses. Try Plymouth Cheddar, aged 1 year. This store has an extensive variety of wines, suitable for all occasions. Whether you crave something sweet or something for a nice meal, Ed Hyder's has much to choose from. This store was established decades ago by Ed Hyder. Ed was wonderful with his customers, answering any questions they had about his food and how to prepare it. Ed passed away a few years ago. Perfect every time! We go to Ed Hyder's ~3-4x per month. Everyone is very helpful, pleasant and knowledgeable. We love the prepared meat options and prepared salads. Fresh, fresh, fresh food. Oh....and the wine is amazing. They have wine tasting some Saturdays (might be more that's only when we see them). The daughter and son that run the store are amazing; very humble and always working. The cashiers are very sweet and there is never pressure to buy anything. This is our first stop for our date nights at home. I've always found parking; side street parking if super busy. One of my favorite things at Ed Hyder's is....there's no need to rush. If you haven't gone yet; take some time to walk around. Not a huge store but lots of different items you won't find anywhere else. A true Gem. read more

The Hydermart (as I, and only I, affectionately call it) is such a gem in an otherwise mostly besupermarketed city. Only holding four aisles and two counters, through a miraculous use of space, the store is home to thousands (hey - two is still plural!) of products. Ed's a character. Talk to him - he loves it! The staff is super helpful and fun, maybe minus that one jerk Tom that used to work there. What was that guy's deal?? He'd always drink All The Coffee and start shouting at people. Ugh. Glad he's gone. Anyway - talk to Brian. He's so cute. Right... so! Products! They have them. Best hoomus around anywhere - lemon & garlic galore. I know the recipe, can't replicate it. I don't think I am capable of growing the requisite amount of facial hair for adequate hoomusitude. Tabooley, great stuff - get it when it's fresh, pick out a nice green one. Baba Ghannoj - ehhh, but that's based on my lifelong hatred for eggplants. Hm. The salsa is the balls! Way spicy - "that'll make your forehead sweat" but such a good flavor. There's no reason salsa has to be like chunky ketchup, Chi Chi. Learn from the Hydermaster. Feta galore! White people love French feta. I think it's too sweet and mild. Go for the Greek stuff, duh. The marinated black olives are pretty good, the Hot Mix green olives are stellar. Breads are all from local bakeries, delivered fresh daily. Meats, back when I ate them, were all top-notch and each (chicken, beef, lamb) variety had a unique marinade. Plenty of fantastic worldly groceries to be found on the shelves. The H-Mart is way food-allergy friendly, and there's lots of gluten-free stuff to be found. Wine wine wine - $6 shame wine to $150 Chateauneuf du Pape. 400 varieties. At least one person in the store has tried each one, and they can tell you lots about the wine- mostly good stuff! Except the giant bottles of Retsina, no one really likes that. Spices!!! Yes! Do not settle for supermarket spices, ever. Except on Sunday when the H-Mart is closed. But then you should have gotten them on Saturday when you were for the wine tasting anyway, right? Next time just don't get so drunk that you forget to buy your spices and instead spill appetizers into the displays. (gross!) ANYWAY - The spices are fresh, they are potent, they are plentiful, and for the most part, the help knows what to do with them. If not, they'll find out. Or make something up. So yeah - a ton of great products you really can't always find anywhere else (though honestly, some Shaw's & Market Basket stores are catching up on the grocery stuff) - set in the oldest standing fire station in Worcester, staffed by an interesting mix of well-informed kids and Ed. Which is not to say that he is not well-informed. Just ... not 25. Right. Go there, buy the house-made stuff, enjoy it. read more

You walk in and are immediately overtaken by the glorious smells of something cooking in your great-grandma's kitchen. The premade foods are great - we got lamb and beef kebabs and they were freaking fantastic. My husband has sensitivities to some of the more substandard oils (soybean and sunflower in particular) but all of their marinades and dressings are olive oil, baby. I mean, that's the way any self-respecting Mediterranean Market would do things, but there are plenty of those that would cut corners. Not Ed Hyder's ;) Got a pound of feta (they have lots of options) for a salad and it was fabu. So many imported canned, jarred, and boxed items. I love their bulk section; we tried a different kind of rice (they carried a few varieties) but they had lentils, beans, flours, candies, polenta, and more and more and more. I confess. I often will find an excuse to battle Worcester traffic just to find my way to Ed Hyders MArket. I really don't need anything..except to step into that tingling mingling scent of spices, soup of the day warming, crisp produce, assorted "try me" cheese, marinating meats, zesty salads, and warmth of a tiny store, brimming with colors, outstanding variety, freshness, and smiles. No matter the size of my purchase, I am always treated as a valued customer. I can honestly say "you" just don't find that around here anymore. For a pretty small place, they pack a lot! So many things in here that you would be hard pressed to find, even in most international markets: exotic fruit jams (including my favorite, rose jam, imported from Greece, no less), ready-to-fry falafel mix, couscous sauces, just to name a few. There's definitely no lack of variety when it comes to spices or wines or grains or cheeses. There's several housemade hummuses with everything from jalapeno to pesto. There are olives in barrels for the picking - I especially love the Lebanese olives in all of their bitter deliciousness. A place like this could totally fly with bad service and I'd still give it five stars, but as it turns out, the staff are all friendly and helpful! True, there are a few similar Middle Eastern market closer to me, but this one is definitely a gem. read more
