Occasion: Visiting WSM with my daughter My daughter made a beeline for this stand as soon as we entered the market. When we walked up, I thought oh boy we're going to be here for awhile. There were wall-to-wall people ordering, making, and eating crepes. Our turn to order came surprisingly fast and we got a lemon crepe. This is her usual order - a crepe with lemon curd and sugar. I was not as into the idea of sugar on a crepe, but now I understand that I've just never done sugar the right way on a crepe. They sprinkle it on to the batter while it's still cooking and the sugar kinds of melt/caramelizes on there - I'm a convert lol The WSM is as crowded as Disney in the summer, so she ate her delicious crepe huddled in a corner. On my list of places to see in/near Cleveland was the West Side Market. Pictures I've seen online give it the appearance that it is bigger than it seemed in person. You cannot possibly sample from all of the booths. In the outer building closest to the parking lot (free for the first 90 minutes) is the vegetables/fruits. Fruit samples are available as you go through to the next building. (Fantastic bargains to be had closer to the end of the day.) On entering the next building of the market, you have opportunity to purchase meats, poultry, fresh (not dried) pasta along with pastries, breads and crepes. Yes, order a crepe at Crepes DeLuxe, and it is made right before your eyes. There is always a line and it does take a few minutes since the crepe is made fresh for each customer. The menu has so many options from savory to sweet. I ordered Ham, Brie and Asparagus. It was well worth the time in line. The batter is a buckwheat base and can also be purchased at the stand. Taking a long overdue trip to the West Side Market from Lake County, it was important to get breakfast before buying all of the tempting goodies my fiancé and I could carry. First word of advice: if you see there are fewer than 10 people in line, get in line. If you decide to come back, you will likely find the line got much longer and so, too, will be the wait. Another piece of advice: before you get in line, examine the menu carefully. It will be difficult to read once you get in line. There are a number of really great options to choose from, both sweet and savory, and you can also order your own custom crepe. Our tastes this particular morning were varied, so my fiancé ordered the savory Florence (egg, spinach, Gruyere cheese), and I ordered the Black and Red, a sweet crepe of strawberries and Nutella (chocolate is an option to the Nutella). The ingredients were all fresh and most of them prepped right before us. The crepes were huge, very flavorful, and a substantial breakfast both of us enjoyed. They were loudly giving sarcastic crap to their customers (particularly me) for a good few minutes, all the way not actually telling me directly, sorry, we're closed, come back tomorrow. They waited until the clock had ticked to closing time for that. Hmm, how convenient. I've written what, 5,000 reviews? Near enough. I don't think I've ever been served by people quite this rude. And consistently so. It's definitely in my 5 most offensive and ugly customer service experiences. So They get -5 stars for massive customer service problems and horrendous attitudes and treating their customers like sh**. I went to the West Side Market on a Saturday morning when I was in town for my sister's wedding. I had heard about the crepes and wanted to get one for breakfast. I walked around a bit during a very busy Saturday morning at WSM and finally found the crepe stand. I could tell it was a very long line and thought "it must be worth it! They have the longest line here!" As I checked in on Yelp, I was surprised to see that their overall review wasn't that high. Well alas, now I see why. For starters, I know it was a busy Saturday morning (Memorial Day Weekend) but there is only one associate working making crepes and she can only make two at a time. I know West Side Market doesn't have much space, but due to the 2 crepe at a time max, this line moves INCREDIBLY slow. To the right of it is the coffee and tea stand. I could tell those associates get annoyed because the line gets so long, it backs up into the line for their stand as well. One coffee associate yelled "If you're in line for a crepe, move to the right! You're blocking the line." Ugh what a mess! Anyways, I waited for roughly 30 mins which is sad because I was about the 5th person in line. I honestly waited for so long that I changed my mind about three times about what I was going to order. At first, I wanted something sweet (maybe strawberry, banana and nutella!), but after waiting so darn long, I was super hungry and knew I needed protein. I took a look at the board and opted for the "Complete" crepe which came with ham, eggs, and cheese. When my crepe was FINALLY ready, the associate handed it to me in a cute flat cone. Although cute and Instagram worthy, it wasn't really practical. This thing is piping hot and even with the paper and cardboard, it's very hot to hold. It's also difficult to take bites out of without almost taking a bite of the paper as well. I will say my crepe was pretty good. The first half of it, I definitely enjoyed. But what makes this place two stars for me is that as I got to the bottom of the crepe, this thing was COVERED in oil/grease. It was disgusting! I didn't even watch the associate put any grease anywhere as she was making it, but it was completely soaked at the bottom. It made me feel so gross and it was dripping everywhere, even on my new Lululemon shorts (insert eyeroll). I would just much rather have a regular crepe served to me on a plate instead of this greaseball meal. Unfortunately, I do not think I would go back because all I think about is my hands and everything else covered in grease. It was just gross. It's a bit of a wait since they can only make so many at once, but they do work as quick as they can. Service is decent, they are pretty short wit customers since it's unlikely they'll see them again and they are busy with getting orders/making orders. Fresh material is used, you can watch as they make it in front of you. Personally I believe that the price set in place is decent, it's a big piece of crepe that they're making from scratch. The stand is called Crepes De Luxe and they specialize in Parisian style street crepes. They have a nice selection of sweet and savory crepes from The King (banana, peanut butter and chocolate) to the les Maritimes (salmon, spinach, capers and creme fraiche). I was at the market with my family and had (admittedly, very stupidly) boasted about this place without ever trying it, based solely on the reviews. We won't ever try "De Luxe" again or recommend friends here. The man behind the counter belongs at a bar, not a crepe stand. He was rude, very unfriendly and unhelpful. You would think he could direct some traffic or tell us where to stand as there is no organization whatsoever - with the coffee stand right next door, the merging three-pronged lines facing every direction, and costumers asking, "I'm sorry, you're in line? For coffee or crepes?" I didn't realize there was a difference! He doesn't even look up to register customers as they stop by, and barely acknowledges your order with a grunt. Doesn't thank you for your business. Doesn't tell you how long it's going to be. Doesn't answer questions without an annoyed tilt in his voice. How do people keep coming back? "De Luxe" serves run-of-the-mill nutella & banana variations. Our bananas were not ripe despite the stand's (literal) two-minute distance from fresh fruit at the market next door. The batter, once cooked, reeked of eggs. I've had better. MUCH, much better, both in terms of service and product. Maybe the guy was off his game. Maybe I just have higher standards for a simple dish. Maybe I shouldn't be comparing New York or Beirut to Cleveland. Frankly, if this place wasn't in Cleveland, - where it is the only place to get 'good crepes' within a fifteen mile radius - I doubt it'd still be in business. Never again. read more

Food is good. Service is unfriendly because the owner doesn't ask the "chef" to nicely interact with customers unless he feels like it or has time to do so. He says the "chef's" job in a traditional restaurant is to make quality food. Horrible attitude and won't go back there. read more
