I enjoyed my time here. It's also "bike free" which is a plus. I have no issue with cyclists, but this is great if you want somewhere to take the kids and not have to continually look around for cyclists. The paths in the wooded areas are mostly natural. No concrete so it's easier on the feet and legs. I'd wear some old shoes if it's been raining. read more

Don't let the seemingly small size of this park fool you, because it's deceptively large and it's easy to get turned around in it, especially when it starts getting dark, so if you go in the late afternoon, it would be good to have a flash-light and a little extra water...just in case you get lost! Part of the issue is that the official maps and what's on google maps is very incomplete. There are a lot of other paths that aren't on the map that just kind of appear. If you don't cross over any bridges, you'll be inside the official part of the park and worst case, you just circle back around, but if you do go over that Crossover bridge, you'll be treated to some nice hiking, but there is no other way to circle back around because the 2nd bridge will put you in the "uncharted" part of the park and take you to the Pumpkin Lakes and you will have to come back the same way you came. This is kind of a shame and hopefully in time, they'll add another pedestrian bridge near Red Gully Lookout, but hey, you're there to walk so this is a way to walk more! For some reason, even though this is right next to an airport and a large suburban neighborhood, the GPS keeps going wonky too so don't count on that too much. This was my first visit with some other people who had never visited the park so I think we all became experts in the park and won't get turned around next time but a few extra signs wouldn't have hurt to help newcomers. read more

We definitely needed some fresh air with space to roam around, since we were just having cabin fever being cooped up indoors. This spot wasn't too far, so we checked it out. Immediately, we found out that parking was kind of tough. Their parking lot was quite small. So, we had to park in the opposite direction on the roadway to this spot. Just be careful driving in, especially during peak times. We still wore face masks and social distanced as much as possible. But, there were several people that weren't doing that. So, it was hard to enjoy the park as much. Overall, though, we still did enjoy walking along the different trails with the peaceful trees and the chirping birds. It was tranquil for the most part. There's this one spot we found that was facing the lake that was just beautiful. We didn't get to explore all of the trails, so we'll be back again soon. read more

Had a pretty amazing Sunday Funday with my pup. I started on route with my boy and decided to take the voyage down the Oyster Creek Loop which is 1.6 miles (according to the map trail). As we started I found myself walking on a trail that wasn't tagged. An awesome off trail which went in the middle of the woods along the outskirts of the park. Pretty sure it must have still been on oyster creek trail, but definitely felt off trail and super exciting. Ill provide some pretty awesome videos that shows what the trail looks like. The old pecan tree is also worth the find. Luckily I stumbled across it while I was exploring the park but has signs that also help lead you along the way. The cherry on the cake was the beautiful wood walkway Bridge that led you to the small pond on the right side of the park. So amazing to get some fresh air in these covid times. Sitting large at about 750 acres in size, Cullinan Park will take an hour to two hours to fully explore. We highly recommend visiting this park if you're interested in wildlife, hiking trails, and unique photo opportunities! There are actually two Cullinan parks in Houston. This is the larger and more popular one located in Sugarland (Southeast Houston). Learn about our visit to the other Cullinan Park located in Southwest Houston. One thing we noticed when arriving is how small the parking lot appeared for its popularity. Luckily, we visited on a weekday, so there were plenty of parking spots. We headed to the right side of the parking lot first. This side features a boardwalk, observation deck, and large lake - perfect for photo opportunities! There were signs for gators on this side of the park. We didn't see any, but did see plenty of birds. The other side of the park is home to a large forested area with miles of hiking trails and lush greenery. Follow along the trails with this map. Our visit led us to the large pecan tree, which is the only point of interest on the map. This pecan tree is the 23rd largest in the state of Texas! read more

I've brought my child(ren) here a couple of times. It's a great escape into nature, and there are great opportunities for birdwatching. There is a main boardwalk area over the water, with an observation tower that you can climb up to. My kids (1 and 3 at the time) loved playing in/on the observation tower. There are a variety of egrets and ducks to see. Sometimes they're a little far away, so bringing binoculars is a good idea if you'd like to admire them more closely. Lots of people walking around with fancy cameras to capture photos of the birds and scenery. There are also some hiking trails but I haven't explored them that much. I am definitely planning on coming back! This park use to have a very bad reputation and when I was in high school this park was so sketchy ( sexual assault occurred here and there was also a weed farm found here in 2014) since it belonged to Harris county and it was largely ignored . My husband was a bit nervous because of the bad reputation but it's cleaned up nicely! Cleanliness 3/5: pretty clean clean ! And there's now restrooms built. There are new paved paths as well. There are some bottles in the water itself but I bet that's hard to scoop out. Paths 2/5 I wish the map was a bit more detailed since the paths have so many forks in the road and we weren't sure which path we were taking. We were trying to find the large pecan tree and we THINK we found it ??? Like we were in the green path , and then the blue , and not sure if we made it to the yellow path ??? Security/safety 1/5: its extremely secluded (good and bad) and I would feel more safe as a female if there's built security stations along the way - I know they are an eye sore though! I dont have a recommendation on how to make people feel more safe but I would just go with a friend or my husband if I don't want to feel vulnerable. Scenery/ambiance 5/5: gorgeous paths , you feel like you slipped away into a secret garden in sugarland. Parts of the park felt like you were in California with large tall trees , some areas felt like you were in the thick of the bayous of Houston . Overall recommendation 3/5 I'm coming back! I'm looking forward to Cullinan being more developed, it's a gorgeous park. read more

Nice local park in Sugar Land for bird watching. If you didn't already know, Houston and especially Sugar Land, Katy and the suburbs on the west side of town have some wonderful bird watching opportunities. Many of the water fowl of this country fly through here. You can see herons, egrets, spoonbills, etc... This park is small compared to some. Oyster creek flows through this area. You can find it on Highway 6 between hwy 90A and Voss road. It is just north of Sugar Land Regional Airport. The sign is obvious as you pass the airport. You drive in and eventually get to a parking lot. There are walking trails through the brush and also a boardwalk system. There is a wooden observation deck (see photos). Bring a camera and some mosquito repellent. Drive out and you'll surely see some birds. Dusk and dawn would be good times to head there. Some dodgy stuff does occasionally happen here. Once, we saw a well dressed guy wandering out of the bushes. He walked past us smelling strongly of pot. Another time a group of teens walked up when we were looking at birds. They reached into one of the large barrel trash cans and pulled out a cooler. Then they all walked off. Strange. Note: people tend to speed a LOT on this part of hwy 6, so watch your speed and watch for police. read more

Googled parks for a good photo shoot in Houston TX and a blog led me here. Was a bit disappointed for that purpose. It's just a swamp with a few trails. Definitely not scenic. The edge of the water has a green mossy area which leads to planks overlooking the lake. Lots of wooded areas. We did spot a few picnic tables, but no grills or playgrounds. Probably a great area for hiking. It was fairly quiet and not crowded so a good escape just inside of sugar land if you're into that. read more

I love this park! Everything is much more livelier than my first visit back in January. The plants are growing back and the animals are out. I was looking forward to seeing lily pads but only saw a few. There should be more in the following weeks! My favorite part is the boardwalk that allows you to walk around the lake. The scenery is amazing and you can take stairs up to a gazebo to get a better view of the lake! We were able to see turtles, birds, and large fish from up there. This may be the main attraction of this park other than their hiking trail. I have not gotten a chance to explore their hiking trail but it seems to be popular for a lot of people! I've seen many people bring their bikes. I'm sure there is lots of animals that can be spotted on the hiking trail. This park does provide plenty of picnic tables, some underneath a gazebo for shade. A perfect location for a picnic or just a relaxing day out. The parking lot is a moderate size and parking shouldn't be a problem. This park is located next to an airport so on a busy day at the airport it can get pretty loud with the airplanes taking off and landing. Other than that it is a pretty great park and worth visiting if you're in the area. read more

I live really close to Cullinan Park but have only visited three times. Pros: - Wonderful shaded trails in the south side (think "a walk in the forest") - Nice boardwalk and water lilies on the north side (White Lake) - Lots of picnic tables - Lots of parking - Interesting plants everywhere - Waterbirds Cons: - Lots of mosquitoes--bring your DEET just in case! - Somewhat-boring scenery - Isolated - Few people on the trails - The young couple standing on the boardwalk smelled like marijuana (I know from attending the Austin City Limits music festival.) - Somewhat sketchy place (e.g. older man with nice car secretly meets younger man here, etc...) - When mountain biking alone in the trails deeper in, I came across what looked like a small shack... Someone who might've been living there came out, started doing something noisy, and I sped off right away. - Noisy due to Sugar Land Airport being its South neighbor - Alligators might be inside (though I've never seen any) I wish this park was more popular; it's really a lovely park and the shaded trails are a treat for anyone suffering through a Texas summer! The parking lot is accessed off Hwy 6 just north of the airport. Keep your eyes open for a small green sign saying "Cullinan Park" on a nondescript driveway on the west side of Hwy 6. We came here for the first time today & decided to walk the trails. there's 2 different sides and we have yet to see the trail by the entrance, we will be returning soon! the trail behind the bathrooms is quite a walk but we discovered a cemetery among the trail and it appears to be from the early 1800's!! Like I said before, I stalk Melissa's reviews and I was super happy to see she found some new parks on this side of town. Since I was already in the area checking out Oyster Creek park I decided to make a stop here too. I had driven past this park many times during high school and never bothered to stop. So after reading about the dodgy stuff that Melissa mentioned, I was wondering what I would see. It was mid-afternoon on a weekday and when we pulled up there were a few cars in the lot. There was a really fancy sports car parked in the lot and when we entered it was a guy dressed in a suit in about 100 degree weather on a cell phone in the patio on the cell phone. As we approached he started to walk away from us and towards another area. I have no idea what he was doing but I really didn't want to be too nosy or else I might not be able to write this review. Anyways, this area is very interesting. It reminded me almost of something you would see in Florida. The water goes on and on as far as the eye can see and there are many birds that are inhabitants of this park. I would recommend coming in the fall or winter because during the summer it's just way too hot since there is no shade. read more

My wife and I go to this park at least 3 times a week and have been doing same for over 5 years. We also have not been big fans of the changes because it directly interferes with the natural beauty and nature of the area. We would feel much better about the situation if the powers to be would visit the park once in a while which they obviously don't. If they did they might see the deer, racoons, etc that populate the park (or did). We hope the changes to the park do not destroy the natural beauty of the park, and turn it in to a typical Sugar Land Texas park disaster!!! TIME WILL TELL. and that is why the 3 stars. This is the perfect park for hiking. There is a trail you can follow in between the forest and it's so fun. When the trail ends, you'll see a beautiful lake in font of you. It's great for bike rides and walks with the family. read more

I find myself going back to this wonderful park! The scenery is amazing!! It's so green and refreshing! It was kind of hard to get to because the entrance into the park requires making a U-turn on a very busy highway strip in Sugarland while having to also make it over to the far right lane immediately (or else you'll miss it and have to make another U-Turn). That's my biggest complaint though! I love taking pictures on the viewing doc and taking a walk through the "forest". Beware of snakes if you plan on bringing a dog!!! I almost stepped on one myself but I'm fine! Just be careful and have fun! read more

I've been going to this park since I was a kid and I love it so much. I've been doing mini updates and even installed bathrooms. They even put in a new concrete trail that later and into a dirt road but it's very nice. It's a great place to go fishing or hiking or biking with your family there's always nice views and you can always get a glimpse at an alligator. There are also trail naps now that'll help a lot! read more

So we decided to check out this park that apparently was made to walk out over the reservoir. Well, we came out when it was one of the worst droughts in Texas' history. So needless to say it was dry as a bone in a desert. I was showing my wife how to use my big Canon camera and we got a couple of shots, but it was very uninteresting. Nothing to look at but grass and trees. It would have looked somewhat lovely with the water and birds if there was any. We didn't see any crazies or any suit/ tie guys smoking pot in the woods... Bummer. Hopefully we can come back when it has water and see the birds and pot-smokers. read more

Thanks to the family that donated the land for this park. Basically, this is a primitive park with no facilities or amenities. It is easy to miss the entrance as it's not really that well marked. There is one Porta-Potty (didn't go inside -- can't vouch for the usability of same!). There are picnic tables scattered around but no BBQs. As noted by others, they are not shaded, and when it gets warm, this park is out. Now, I did not see any signs indicating trailhead or trails, so I'm not sure where they are. The observation deck and boardwalks are nice features. Be sure to bring your binoculars to see the birds and ducks. We actually saw a duck (a coon maybe?) catch a fish! read more

Cullinan Park - Parks Near Me - Sugar Land, Texas

This park was a Houston park until recently. The park now belongs to the City of Sugar Land. It used to be a hangout for shady characters and drug activity. I think some of these activities have not yet left the park. The good thing is that the park is changing. The city will clean up this park and turn it into a family friendly place. If you're there and see problems, call Sugar Land Police. They will be there in a few minutes. Happy alligator watching! read more

I love the versatility of this park, by which I mean it's a perfect location to take your kids to play around, to go hang out with your friends, or even to take a cute walk on the pier with a significant other. Plus, despite being pretty close to an airport and Hwy 6, it's very serene and quiet. I have been here twice. The first time was sometime in June or July, and I had a good experience. The trails were pretty nice and I liked the boardwalk area. However, I came back a few days ago to take an evening walk and was very disappointed. It appears that the walking trails are not maintained at all; they were so overgrown with vegetation that most of them weren't even walkable. I actually had to get a stick to machete my way through a lot of the trails. The boardwalk area is still nice, but it is not enough for me to return to this park. read more

A nice little getaway in the middle of a rather busy area. A bit louder than you'd like for a nature preserve, being next to a major highway and an airport, it nonetheless has plenty of nature and is quieter than the rest of the area. A large lake (compared to what you'd expect) with a pier and viewing tower sits at the entrance. Trails wind through the dense forest area southwest of the parking area; they wind a lot, so it can be a bit easy to get lost, though you'll find your way out eventually, just keep moving forward (or towards the sound of traffic). They are currently renovating the park and improving the trails, so you may reach some dead ends; don't go around the barriers, they are closed for a reason, especially after Harvey caused flooding in the park. Be aware (but not scared) of alligators in the park, as it is located along a creek (read: swamp), so this is their natural habitat and it is a nature preserve as well. Signs remind you not to feed them either; they're more scared of you than you are of them, but feeding them removes that fear, making them more likely to approach humans. Alligators approaching humans = dead alligator (call park officials if alligators are approaching you, at that point they become dangerous and you need to avoid them). So long as you're aware of your surroundings, you'll be fine, able to relax and enjoy nature. read more

Park is not open open daily, it's a lie. It's not open on Labor Day. I wasted my time driving here with my family thinking it would be open. When we got here the park was closed. However, hours of operation is from " 6am-9pm, daily" on their website. They should updated this because the information is misleading. read more

Went here for the first time today. There is a nice dock with great views over the lake, and plenty of picnic tables. Nice, thick forest. Feels like an escape in the middle of the city. HOWEVER, we went for the purpose of running the trails. The trails were poorly groomed, overgrown in most places, and lead to nowhere. The trails are also unmarked. I had found a trail map online prior to going, but apparently this is just a future/fantasy plan for the park, not the current reality. It is obvious that no one is taking care of these trails. Definitely don't recommend going any time after a rainfall, as the trails become completely muddy and impassable. The mosquitoes are pretty bad as well. Overall, this park has a lot of potential, but just isn't getting the funding or attention it needs. Big disappointment, and won't be going back. read more

There isn't another place like Cullinan Park in Fort Bend, especially near Sugar Land. So many birds, plants, trails and places to picnic. You can go every day and always see something new and exciting. We have always felt very safe there as it is patrolled often by Sugar Land police and has cameras monitoring 24/7. read more
