Cumar has been the biggest road block to the completion of our project ( and that's saying a lot considering we are dealing with the City of Boston). Not only have they over charged us (took another week of the project as we went back and forth over errors made on their end), it has been like pulling teeth to get clarifications on drawings and getting basic templating questions answered. read more

We worked with Cumar for stone in two small bathrooms and it was a nightmare after we paid our deposit. They moved agreed upon dates without telling us, contacted us a week before installation to tell us they'd lost the stone for one of our bathrooms and tried to make us pick a new one. It was impossible to get ahold of our Project Manager. Measurements were off when they came to install. The worst piece was the primary bath backsplash which had 1/4 - 1/2" gap to the wall. The installers tried to blame the wall being uneven when in fact the stone was curved. They had not used the piece we selected, but milled another stone down instead. We were then told they couldn't replace it because it was a 'remnant' which didn't make sense since they had used another piece of stone anyways. Solution still TBD.... The bill we received also included $750 of work that wasn't done - luckily they removed it when we asked. read more

Really should be zero stars. So overpriced. The reviews about good prices are many years ago, apparently, they have changed. They have no interest in doing business with regular people. If you are not a huge company, buying hundreds of square feet, avoid this place. The horrible salesperson Kathy kept telling me how used to you to dealing with HUGE jobs. Well, excuse me for only needing a vanity top. You should just sell to commercial then. The same stone was about half the price at all the other places in the area. There's a great place around the corner. A friend also went here with an appointment to pick out remnant, and when she got there, they said the remnant yard was closed! They could have called, they had all contact info. VERY rude. No apology, at all! Wasted hours and they could care less. Unless you like to overpay, stay away! read more

When I did a major renovation (my 2nd one in Cambridge) about 2 years ago, I searched quite a bit for a place that had a large selection of stone and would do a good job installing it for a fair price (my ideal situation). I ended up having a fantastic "one-stop shopping" experience with Cumar! I was specifically looking for green soapstone for kitchen counters. Cumar had an amazingly good selection of slabs in their warehouse yard (the size of an aircraft hangar, actually) -- far more extensive than anywhere else I've seen except for that wholesale-only place in Westwood that supplies a lot of smaller granite dealers (that's where I went for my previous renovation -- my old stone guy sent me there to pick out a slab I liked). Anyway, Cumar's prices for the stone plus installation were significantly less than all the other quotes I received. I assume this is because Cumar both imports and installs the stone, thereby eliminating the middleman. The soapstone looks great, and installation was flawless. I subsequently recommended Cumar to 2 friends, who also liked them. I dealt mostly with Bernard and a bit with Dave (the manager). The installers were Jackson, Robert, and a few others. read more

We have used Cumar Stone for multiple renovation projects at our home and were extremely happy and satisfied with them. From the initial visit in their showroom until the final installation they were professional and their many years of experience was evident. Short Answer: Do not go here for your Granite counter tops. We went here, and at first, everyone seemed quite nice. Jared, our sales rep, was a little slow to get back to us on things, but the price beat everyone else's. That was for a reason. When our counter top FINALLY came (it took hassling them to get templating done, then they have about a 4 week lead time until the granite is cut and can be installed) it didn't fit properly. There were huge, ugly seams, as well as half inch by inch gaps at the edges near the front of the counter that they filled with NEON green putty (our granite was green). We called Jared the next morning and emailed him pictures of the horrendous counter, and even he acknowledged it was cut wrong. He said they would cut new pieces and come back to fix the work. That was two and a half months ago, and we haven't been able to get him on the phone since. Our $10,000 counter top is ugly, and it seems we have no recourse but to complain on Yelp. Do not believe them when they tell you "We are not done until you are fully satisfied with your new project." read more

I would go back to Cumar in a heartbeat! I also went through Jared for the counters in our Penthouse apartment. We needed a top quality product and look, and that's just what he delivered. I NEVER HAD A PROBLEM REACHING JARED...EVER!! 4 weeks lead time is pretty reasonable...scheduling a template can be difficult when you are dealing with people's work schedules and seams are to be expected if you don't SPECIFICALLY ask for one solid piece like we did. Thieving scum. We had a gorgeous slab that we bought independently, and they said they'd be able to store the remnants long term. They SOLD our slab out from under us and when we bought another entire slab had the cojones to say "well everything happens for a reason" - do tell what reason am I stuck with bland ugly stone that's nothing like my slab that you stole from me? Lying thieves. Then they tried to steal the remnants of my second slab. Do not ever do business with them. read more

I live and work in the neighborhood next to Cumar marble. They have been burning something that has produced large amounts of noxious black and brown smoke. The smoke gets in my house and place of business. My two sons have asthma and when the smoke comes there is nothing I can do to protect them. We feel trapped. I've reached out to the company and inquired as to what they are burning but have heard no response. I'm still shocked that this form of pollution can be happening in a very residential neighborhood in the Boston area. This is the type of pollution you would expect to see in China not in Massachusetts in 2016. I encourage any potential customers to consider not supporting a company that has shown no concern for the health of neighbors and the environment. read more

STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY!!! DO NOT BE FOOLED by their beautiful show room and large variety of stone options. In comparison to the other options in the area, they are fantastic when it comes to communication -- they return your calls/emails in a timely fashion and they answer your questions. BUT they don't stand behind their work and take responsibility when they make mistakes. I hired them to do a small project in my bathroom (it involved cutting four pieces from the same slab to match each other). The afternoon before my scheduled installation I received a call because my pieces were not going to be ready on time. I asked when we could reschedule the installation, and they called me back to let me know someone would stay late to finish the piece on time. The countertop came out beautiful BUT the sink was installed very slightly off-center. It's admittedly pretty slight, but for such an expensive project, it should be PERFECT! The shelves were supposed to be polished on the top and the bottom, but instead were only polished on one side and honed on the other -- I never got a response from them when I asked about it. There were very serious issues concerning the final piece. During the templating, they damanged my wood window sill I was replacing (I had initially planned to repurpose this piece...). Upon mentioning this to the salesman, he said "it's difficult to make a template." If it's too difficult for them to do their job without damaging my personal property, perhaps they should not be in this business? The sill template they made was not shaped properly to fit where it needed to be installed. The template had multiple irregular non-straight lines and small perpendicular cuts where there should not have been and it wasn't even symmetrical. It looked like a child had made it. When I requested that these extraneous cuts be omitted when cutting the marble I was told that the template was made by a professional, which I am not, so we should not change it. He said that the template may not necessarily be an exact match to the space because they need to account for some small amount of space in order for it to fit in the spot. I, naively, listened. (In speaking with other experts later, I learned that this explanation was completely bogus and incorrect: the template should be an EXACT match to the space and that this is why they come and measure it prior to cutting the stone. And that's why the template work itself is not cheap!) I discovered a large crack through the slab (front to back) during the layout. To assuage my concerns that my pieces would be cut through the crack, the salesman marked it with X's. Ultimately, the piece was cut about a foot from where I agreed during the layout. It included the crack and excluded a dark, beautiful portion of the veins in the natural stone. Their excuse was that the layout was done incorrectly and that in order to fit the piece on the slab, it had to be moved over. They passed off the supposedly erroneous layout as an error made on my own behalf eventhough the layout was based on the template they made and the outline was drawn by their salesman -- I only told him where to draw. Furthermore, this is no excuse to include a portion of the stone which is SPECIFICALLY marked to be EXCLUDED. If there was a problem with the layout, it needed to be communicated to me prior to cutting the stone. Finally, the sill did not fit where it needed to be installed because of the sloppy, irregular shape (which, they were proud to point out, was the same shape as the template). Cumar promised to fix the problem and made a proposal which would have somewhat improved the situation, but at an additional cost to me. I informed them that this proposal was a start for them to amend the situation, eventhough I found it grossly inappropriate that their errors would be at my expense. (At this point I just wanted it to be done and done well!) They got back to me to inform me they will do no further business with me (including this botched, outstanding project I had hired them to complete). They demanded that I pay them for the charge for the windowsill template which was used to exactly cut the sill that does not fit in my wall. GO ELSEWHERE TO GET YOUR STONE WORK DONE IF YOU WANT IT DONE RIGHT ANDY BY A COMPANY WHO WILL STAND BEHIND THIER WORK! I have since hired an expert to determine if the sill piece can be salvaged. He had a solution for the crack, but in order for the piece to fit, portions would need to be trimmed, and large gaps would need to be filled with grout -- completely unacceptable! In talking to other people in the stone business, I've discovered that this project is not the only example in which Cumar failed to properly template their pieces and in which they did not stand behind their work. read more

Used cumar to install solid slabs of marble for my walls of my custom shower and vanity top for my new master bath. Due to the scope of work they had to install the shower walls first and then would return on a later date to install the vanity top. The template and wall installation went great, but from there it all started to go down hill fast! When they installed the vanity top it was not the right stone . My wall are marble the vanity top they installed was a black and white granite. When you do a stone job you get to pick out the slabs you want but use slabs in consecutive order as they are cut so that every thing will some what match one another, because stones a natural product and will have variations to it. Then you trace your template to the stone to be cut. For my job I needed 2 slabs, In the time between the two installs they lost the remainder of the 2 slabs for my vanity top. So we matched the vanity top the best we could to the walls from the marble they had witch was a few slabs down the line it was a close enough match. They came installed the new vanity top and I assumed that was the worst of it. (you know what they say about assumptions) When the plumber came to install the finish trim in the shower the holes in the wall where cut wrong so the finish trim dint cover them. There solution was to just fill the open holes with an epoxy. I will admit it looked good However it wasn't a long term fix the epoxy din't bond well to the the stone and shortly after (6 months) fell out and the holes would allow water to leak be hind the wall. The sales man that i was dealing with no longer worked there and no one else could be bothered as emails and phone calls to the company went unreturned. Because of the leaks I could not use the shower. I had another stone company come out they said that the epoxy would never work as a long term repair so i had them remove the walls (shame to smash such pretty new marble) and installed new ones and to top it all off they where cheeper.
