Worst service. I have never given a bad review but this experience was awful. We were a table of 7 it took 2 hours to get our food which was cold when it finally arrived. Our day was so enjoyable until we were at Cummares, and being there totally ruined the whole vibe of the day. Southern Illinois is a food desert of cheap chain restaurants or fried everything. Murphysboro is a small oasis of decent restaurants. I yelped Italian restaurants and in a sea of pizza Cummares stood out like a beacon. The place has a well worn vibe and it was full when I arrived. The menu has no surprises but has all the usual suspects. I had the Caesar salad and lasagne with a generic Chianti. It was all very good and reasonable with good service. Pasta is good but avoid the calzones. When one steps back it's an average place now. Truth be told, the previous ownership left big expectations that current owners cannot fill. The calzone we received a few days ago should never have left the kitchen: overcooked, dried-out, and cheeseless! My wife's tortellini was good however. The sauce passable and the spinach excellent. Not sure what happened here, but this place has gone downhill. We got there at 4:30 last night. There were two other tables. We got our drinks and ordered, then nothing for the next hour. More people had come in and were getting their food, we had to repeat our order three times and only got more drinks after asking four times. They finally brought our food, but no bread. This restaurant probably has the most authentic and delicious Italian food around these parts. You walk into the restaurant and you're immediately sent to a place of olden days. The toasted ravioli appetizer was great. My new favorite appetizer to get at Italian restaurants! I ordered the cannelloni, which came with a small salad. The cannelloni was good, filled with beef and covered in rich tomato sauce. I enjoyed my meal, but my fiance wasn't a big fan of their pizza. To him, it was alright, but not awesome. We LOVE Cummares and go about 3 times a month. I adore the weekly specials that Kady's team puts together. Always a fun drink and always creative. I say this with peace and love, peace and love...Gabe sucks. The place is busy at dinner time as it should be. Gabe seems aggravated, his body language is closed, he low key barks when asking if you are ready to order, his tone of voice and rapid pace to get through with you is off putting. He just seems unhappy. His lack of customer service negatively impacts my dining experience. Just watch him scurry from table to table - no smile, so sharp, no connection...it feels like he doesn't like you and is annoyed. It's just a bad feel. read more

Had reservations for dinner on Saturday 3-9-24 and were seated promptly. The restaurant was full and the wait staff was attentive BUT no one was getting their food in a timely manner. We waited over an hour for our food and I noticed some people who were seated before us still hadn't been served possibly because we complained about the wait. What was frustrating was a huge number of carryout orders constantly going out the door. When we mentioned this to the waitress she admitted that they were overwhelmed with carryout orders and were apparently giving those orders priority over the seated customers. Our reservations were for 6pm and we finally left at 7:30 with many customers still seated and waiting for their food. The restaurant closes at 8pm so I'm guessing many people left considerably later than the closing time. No hurry to return and would suggest if you live local order carryout. Those orders seem to take priority. read more

This is a hopping place on weekends close to dinner time. Can be somewhat loud as well, but not crazy loud. Servers are nice and polite and attentive. Have eaten pizza and Tortellini and they were both quite good. I would definitely recommend. read more

Fantastic thinner crust and loaded with toppings. We also got each of the desserts to try. Hands down- the best Italian desserts I've ever had. This place is fantastic! This is a local joint operated by a very nice family. We've never had a bad meal here. We usually start with an order of bruschetta. The tomato mixture is always fresh and the bread is freshly toasted. Usually order a pizza and a pasta dish. The entrees are large and the pizza is the best in the area. The staff is always pleasant and very accommodating. There is always a decent crowd, but never a long wait. They have two-three tables right outside for those nice evenings! I think they have a lunch buffet at lunch, but I cannot comment since I always go for dinner. Go try it out! read more

Cummare's is my favorite restaurant in Murphysboro (sorry 17th Street). They serve homemade Italian food in a classy atmosphere. It's definitely a place to go when you want a 3 course meal. The storefront is cute and has some history to it. If you look closely you will see a "1896" on the top cornerstone. On my last visit there I started with the toasted ravioli appetizer. Then came the salad. I really like the house dressing, a balsamic vinaigrette. And for my entree I had the tortellini which was filled with meat and cheese and covered in sweet marinara sauce. Place is nice enough, but too small to even be called intimate. I absolutely detest places that have people waiting, standing around over you while you eat. Great food if your only exposure to Italian food is Fazzolis. The marinara was good, but servings are not generous. Salads were just ok, Alfredo sauce was more like bechamel. Garlic bread was atrocious, though. Toasted hoagie buns for godsake. And the prices aren't inexpensive. But the reason we won't be back was the service. In a word. Rude. My wife and I even made reservations to be seated. And when we came in, we were treated with complete indifference. Couldn't have cared at all. In fact, everyone squeezed info the front of the place heard how we were treated and laughed with us about it. For the money and the so-so food, the bad service isn't worth it. Having just moved here, my family in the area said it's worth the 35 minute drive from Marion to Murphysboro and they were right. All home made, all delicious.
