You need a permit to walk all the way down to the falls and it is a very challenging hike. They limit the amount sold so it does sell out. The gorge does flood so def watch the safetyvide. we wouldn't have made it without out hiking poles. It was my first time using them but theybare game changer for hills and uneven terrain. We had to cross a river ... not creek. Climbing over rocks and boulders. River rocks are sooo slippery. Shoes should have good tread. This was challenging and truthful doubt I'd do it again. Cummins Falls State Park is located 10 miles north of the town of Cookeville, in Central Tennessee. Can you go swimming at Cummins Falls??? Of course you can! It's a 1 mile hike down to the bottom of a gorge to reach a swimming hole Travel and Leisure Magazine rates...as one of the "10 Best in the United States"! It's $7 to gain access to the gorge. You can purchase passes online ahead of time at tnstateparks.com. Or, you can buy passes inside the Visitor Center the day of, but they allot only 200 tickets per day so depending upon the time of year, passes can sell out quickly especially during peak summers. Now...there is a waterfall overlook to check out but I think it'd be more worthwhile to get to Cummins Falls ASAP before the crowds arrive and you can always visit the lookout on the return trip back up towards the trailhead. Once you reach the river area, it's 6/10th's of a mile remaining until you arrive at the falls. Also, make sure to hang towards the left while hiking beside the river and (imo) it's imperative to be wearing water shoes as the creek is filled with sharp rocks and water levels reaching shin high. While hiking to Cummins Falls, you really get a sense for being in the heart of nature. I enjoyed the setting. Approaching the falls, it's 75 feet of cascading waters flowing down the cliffside and ideal for swimming. Best of all, visitors can climb the rocks and explore at their leisure making for an adventurous experience. Of course, it's a rite of passage to finish the experience in style by going swimming. The park opens at 8am. I'd suggest arriving as early as possible before it gets busy. The park closes at 6pm but there's a clearly stated sign that visitors must exit the gorge area by 5pm. One extra note...lifeguards are on duty at Cummins Falls throughout the day. When returning back up towards the trailhead, now head over to the lookout platform getting to admire Cummins Falls from high above. It makes for a photogenic perspective and is a clear reminder of why the great outdoors can be so special. The view from the top of this waterfall was absolutely amazing! There are also opportunities to walk down into the gorge but you must purchase a trail permit and watch the training videos. When walking the gorge I think they mentioned you cross the river twice so wear water shoes and be careful! It is a more difficult trail to take. But you can swim at the falls if you'd like. My family walked I the overlook two different days during our stay in the area. The waterfalls from above is breathtaking and it is amazing to see how deep the gorge walls are. If you need an easy trail, need wheelchair accessible, or have small kids then the yellow trail to the overlook is the best option for you. read more

Very beautiful falls in TN! It was a bit of a hike to get to them. A LOT of woods before actually getting to the falls. To get to the swimming pool / falls you have to take a path that's over a mile, so this is not easily accessible for little ones or older people. In the right season I imagine the falls are roaring and even more breathtaking than when I saw them. You can swim here but I didn't opt for this. The main highlight of the park, the gorgeous Cummins Falls, can be seen two ways. From above, easy stroll to the overlook via a few different trails, try the loop, great views both ways! From below, you need a permit, so reserve early, and you need weather conditions to be mostly safe from rain in the water basin area. You can reserve your permit on the park website, it's only a few dollars, and check in at the visitor center to watch a short video, then head down a couple of paths to go down to the gorge. The trail is steep, rough, and super rugged. There are crossings, you will get wet, it's very slippery. The reward, though... is worth it. I went with my favorite dog friend, and other than having to float him across a few times, everything was all good! I wore topsider wader boots for the creek in the gorge, had a change of socks at the ready, and hiking boots on the path up and down. Be safe and good luck! read more

This park is a must do. We went last week and got the permit for the gorge of the waterfall. I highly recommend. You walk down to the river and go left, you have to cross the river twice to get to the water fall. They have a flag system so you know what to expect (green, yellow, purple, red). It was a purple flag when we went so no swimming under the water fall. There was only 7 permits bought that day, they sell 200 a day. It was 40 when we went which is why it was so empty. The river water was about 2 feet to cross when we went. You have to do some bolder scrambling to get to the waterfall too. There are life vest by the falls for people and keep an eye out for the emergency evacuation routes just in case there is a flash flood. The park also had a gift shop with lots of cute gear that was well priced. We got some stickers and magnets. read more

There is a good variety of hikes available at Cummin Falls. When you reach the overlook of the falls it is quite a sight. The waterfall is absolutely grand and roars as most waterfalls do. There is also a route that I believe goes to the bottom, but we were coming in close to closing time and did not want to get the permit to get to the bottom. The trails itself are pretty clean with no trash in sight. There are also some great stuff in the gift shop. read more

Cummins Falls State Park is located approximately nine miles north of Cookeville, Tn., There are a few routes to get there but all will display the beautiful surrounding forests, hills, and a few winding curves. Summertime park hours are from 8am - 6pm. There's a sign as you come into the park that state visitors at the bottom of the waterfall need to start heading back by 5pm because (as I stated) the park closes at 6pm. Admission into the park is free, however if you want to trek down to the bottom of the gorge, and wind your way along the flowing creek, to arrive at the base of the falls, you'll have to purchase a "permit" (ticket). Permits are $6.59/person and can be purchased at the Park Visitor Center / gift store or online (same price). Access to the overlook and other hiking trails above the gorge does not require a permit, and hence is free. Swimming in the pool at the base of the falls is permitted but life jackets are strongly suggested for everyone, and for children under 12 (must be accompanied by an adult) a life jacket is required. After purchasing my permit from the friendly employee at the Visitor Center, I asked her if I could purchase a bottle of water. She replied that unfortunately the prior weekend was the 4th of July weekend and they had been cleaned out of water. However as my luck would have it, a young family - mother, father, and 3 boys had just purchased their permits, and the father upon hearing this instantly offered me one of their spare bottles. I graciously accepted and thanked them. I met several very nice, friendly, and courteous people here. The hike down to the gorge is a well defined and cleared path. It winds down to lessen the steep slope in which there's an approximately 200 foot elevation change. Going down is a breeze. Going up is a pretty good workout. Keep your eyes on the path as it's uneven and occasionally has jagged rocks. In fact it is not recommended for one to bring children under the age of 5 down to the gorge. Once down in the gorge there's an approximately 1/2 mile hike along the creek to the base of the falls. Note you'll need to cross the creek at least once or twice so make sure you're wearing some water shoes of some sort - in my case this happened to be my Hokas. The falls are amazing and beautiful. I wasn't prepared to go swimming in the pool, but several people were taking advantage of the cool water on this hot July day. There are no lifeguards on duty and a sign is posted that everyone swimming does so at their own risk. I cautiously made (climbed) my way up the side to where I was on the upper flat portion to the first stage of falling water (and above the pool). I enjoyed the great view, the cool mist, and the sound. After dipping my shirt in the cool water, I made my way back through the gorge and up to the top, and to the Visitor Center. I thanked the employees and also found a nice Cummins Falls State Park t-shirt to take home. If you enjoy hiking, waterfalls, meeting new, friendly people this place is your cup of tea. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and highly recommend you check this place out. P.S. Tennessee has a well supported and staffed state park system. Cummins Falls is popular for its massive natural waterpark feature of an immense waterfall. You need to buy a "Day permit" or basically a ticket to visit the actual falls where dozens of bathers lounge, dwarfed by its immense stone tiers of water flow. There's a small interpretive center and gift shop with information about the natural features of the park and the human history of the site. They have good maps. Staff is not terribly outgoing, I think this is a very heavily visited Park and it was the end of the day and I think they were tired of humanity. I don't dock them for that. The river gorge is very steep and the hills are heavily forested so on my brief visit, I did not encounter a ton of grand vistas. Trails are well worn but have a lot of roots and rocks. There do seem to be a few handicap accessible points you can drive to, including the overlook of the falls, which is completely and smoothly paved. read more

Since my review of Cummins Falls was four years old, I decided it needed an update! After all, when I first visited Cummins Falls in 2016, it wasn't yet a state-managed property - now it's a state park! So why should you go here? It's GORGEOUS. No joke - Cummins Falls is one of the prettiest places I've been in Tennessee. The falls area is truly gorgeous and great for a picnic or a swim! So the things you need to know... First of all, as of August 2020, YOU NEED A PERMIT to hike to the falls. You can get a permit on their website, and there is a small fee (I think we paid $12 or 14 for two people). When we hiked on a Sunday a few weekends ago, there was a park employee or volunteer checking permits (you can print it or show it to them on your phone), and a couple hiking in front of us hadn't known about the permit and were pretty upset. (You don't need a permit if you're just going to the overlook, but you do need one if you're hiking down to the falls.) The hike isn't easy. The first half of the hike is of medium difficulty (in my opinion) - you have to hike up and down some pretty serious elevation changes in this part of the hike. But the really difficult part of the hike happens when you hit the water. The rest of the hike is IN the water. I'm only five feet tall, and I was definitely up to my mid-shins or knees in water a couple of times. It's slippery, and you have to ford the creek a few times. I wore hiking boots down to the water and then changed into water shoes for the second half of the hike to the falls. I personally find it to be a difficult hike - but so worth it! There are bathrooms in the parking lot before you start the trail, but otherwise you're on your own (no bathrooms or picnic tables along the hike to the falls). As far as crowds? Cummins Falls is gorgeous and A LOT of Tennesseans know it. So, yeah, it gets crowded. VERY CROWDED. To avoid the heavy crowds we expected, we arrived at Cummins Falls around 9 or 9:30 in the morning on a Sunday. At this time, the parking lot wasn't too full and neither the trail nor the falls were too crowded (we were easily able to find a great rock at the falls where we could put our things and set up for a while). By the time we left? It was packed. Tons of cars in the parking lots and way more hikers and swimmers. If you're worried about crowds, it's probably also relevant to you that not many people at the falls were wearing masks even in the parking lot or bathrooms before getting on the trail. What an amazing place to spend a hot summer day! Cummins Falls is gorgeous - and it's such an adventure getting to it! You SHOULD go and explore it. But to really enjoy - you might want to go early! Oh how I loved my time here! We spent roughly 3 hours on the trail and at the waterfalls combined, and every moment was amazing! Walking down to the falls was tricky, so if you have balance issues or don't have shoes with a good grip, I'd recommend viewing the falls from the overlook only. Keep in mind, the same way you go down, is the way you come back up to leave. I can't lie, I don't workout often, so the trail kicked my tail coming back up!!! A few tips: I highly recommend wearing a good pair of water shoes. Making it to the falls without getting wet will be quite the task for you! Take LOTS of water! One water bottle was not enough for me. Finally, the earlier you get there, the better. This will help you avoid the crowds. Have fun!! read more

Cummins Falls is a 282 acre state park located in Cookeville, Tennessee. It is named after the 75 foot tall Cummins Falls waterfall, which is a park of the Blackburn Fork River. The land had been offered to Sargent Blackburn in the 1790s instead of a paid pension for his service to the Revolutionary War. The land was purchased by John Cummins in 1825, and he built mills that allowed him to be a stop for commerce. It stayed in the Cummins family for over 100 years, and then was purchased by the state. The trails include ways to the base of the waterfall, and to the top (overlook) of the falls. We did the base. The trails are the Blackburn Fork River Trail (.5 miles), the Falls Overlook Trail (.45 miles), and the John Cummins Trail (.45 miles). To get to the base of the falls, you have to get a permit, either online or at the visitor's center. You start behind the visitor's center, to the Falls Overlook, to the Blackburn Fork River Trail, and then you hike through the water to the base of the falls. They have lifejackets available at the base of the falls if you need it, and you will get wet. I was shocked at how quickly I had to cross the river and wade in water up to my thighs. You will climb over slippery rocks. It's approximately three miles, and difficult climbing back up to the visitors' center, but it is gorgeous and well worth it. read more

Girl's trip weekend came from SC very cute little town, visited two waterfalls very pretty but was a little disappointed in this one. We talked to the park rangers only saying it was a 11/2 mile hike there and back and wasn't told how hard it would be! As pictured below that was the gorge only rock and walking through water plus slippery rocks! Totally would recommend to people who are prepared and love to hike! My GF and I drove up from Atlanta. As I was talking to a young male staffer getting directions, map, etc.; there were two young female staffers behind me that were handling snakes. I was not made aware of this which was troubling since I don't like snakes. They tell my GF that the one has bitten people. The male staffer tells me to take the yellow trail to the overlook which is suppose to be .5 mile through the woods. He also said there was a dip on the trail. My GF and I are 70 & 71. upon entering the woods, the trail is about 3 ft wide and ungroomed. You have to navigate over tree roots the whole way. As for the dip, it's a steep decline then incline that we had to zig zag up. My GF has a bad knee and COPD so this became difficult for her. Finally getting to the overlook I was very disappointed. Only one spot can you see the waterfalls after descending down a steep bank. You must wait and take your turn as others get their view. To get to the bottom of the falls one must take a 1.5-mile strenuous hike and wade up the stream to get to the base and swimming hole, then hike back out. The return trip we took the orange trail since there is suppose to be an old farmhouse from the 1800's. The trail is narrower, rough, with nothing to see. We were following another group. Apparently, we missed a turn and we ended up on the access road which we followed back to the entrance. This too was to be .5 mile from the overlook which seemed much longer. It was 88 degrees and humid. By the time we got back to the car, we were exhausted. Seniors should take the access road NOT the trails. The park should provide some form of shuttle service for seniors and handicap individuals. Neither of the trails are adequately marked. Just an occasional sign with an arrow pointing the way. read more

Finally got to hike to see this beauty. One positive thing that came from Covid is forced us to stay home during my week off and explore my beautiful state. Gorge access permits must be purchased online for $6 a person. There's only 100 available per day and they go fast. Water shoes are highly recommended! We went on a beautiful Wednesday, arrived at 11 AM. Easy drive in from Rutherford County. There's a cute little market right before the entrance that sells waterproof phone protestors and water shoes. There's free gravel parking, but it's limited. When we arrived, we were greeted, checked in and watched a short 4 minute safety video. We were fortunate that it hasn't rain in a few days so the water level was low, it was a level 2 difficulty. Aside from water shoes, we packed a backpack with snacks and plenty of water. The hike itself was not easy. The trail was beautiful and for the most part was easy, there was one stretch that did not have rails, but it wasn't too high up. It's a good mile until you get to the gorge. There's a beautiful overlook that gives you an overview of the falls, great photo op. Once you get to the bottom, switch into your water shoes, you're going to get wet. There are some dry, rocky paths, but we actually wanted to get into the water, which wasn't too deep and felt amazing! There's some small fish and we even saw some crawfish! It felt like forever before we got to the waterfall, but it was more like a half mile. Once you get to the waterfall, there are plenty of rocks to sit and enjoy the beauty! You can swim in the hole or even explore the waterfalls themselves. My husband and son walked under the waterfall while I watched the bags. They thought it was amazing. I loved that there were rangers all throughout the hike. And all throughout the hike, it was so clean! Will definitively be back! read more

Our Last Summer destination for this year brought us to this Majestic waterfall. Did some camping woke up early made the drive over only to be told that because of heavy rains we would not be able to get into the water. With numerous people making the journey down to the falls anyway we decided to follow and were rewarded by doing so. People were allowed to get in the water and play around just not climb onto the Falls which on other days is perfectly acceptable. Swimming shoes or old athletic shoes are a must for the trek down. Flip-flops or bare feet is just not a good idea. The hike down takes about 25 to 30 minutes if you use the River's Edge shortcut. Taking the scenic Outlook route definitely adds at least 15 minutes to the journey and the view from the top is not even close to as spectacular it is from the bottom. Save the time and energy and take the shortcut down. Make sure you bring plenty of water or beverages of the non-alcoholic kind. Alcohol is not allowed at this state park. I wouldn't advise having a couple beers before you go down either because it is kind of a difficult hike. We got there at about 11 a.m. to find the parking lot pretty crowded already. When we left around 1:30 the parking lot was totally packed with hundreds of people making the walk down to the falls. Come early you get better photo opportunities and it's a lot more enjoyable in the water. Free must see enjoyment and actvites at this beautil destination. Smokehouse BBQ and bathrooms are also located in the parking lot along with a ranger station plenty of lifeguards on duty and a all-around great time. read more

Wow, is this place gorgeous! The look out point is beautiful and is not a bad walk. But the walk down to the bottom of the falls is not for the faint of heart. It is rigorous and you must be willing to have soaked shoes and pants and know that you will need to cross deep waters twice to get to the bottom of the falls. Totally worth it! read more

Cummins Fall State Park is THE daytrip to take from Nashville if you want to see a beautiful waterfall and take a swim. It is about a 3 hour roundtrip drive to this park from Nashville. There is plenty of parking and restrooms are available (port-a-potties in the off-season) at the trailhead. The hike is straight downhill then once you get to the bottom you should be prepared to cross over streams and get wet. If you have water shoes these are probably best for the combination of hiking and crossing the river. You can also take off your shoes and hold them when you are crossing. It takes a total of probably 30-40 minutes from the trailhead to reach the actual waterfall and you are rewarded with a beautiful view and a pool-like swimming area. A note on safety: I wouldn't say that this is very kid-friendly as far as trails go. I wouldn't bring a child younger than 12 since you'll want them to be crossing the streams by themselves. Due to its tremendous popularity it gets quite busy here especially when the weather is really nice. Take heed of other people climbing on rocks and make sure that you're being safe. Also the water levels for the river can rise to very high levels so you won't want to come here right after heavy rains. Overall: Very cool to see at least once but not my favorite falls in middle Tennessee. I don't enjoy the crowds but the swimming area here is great and the view is pretty. read more

Cummins Falls State Park was an extremely laid back and incredibly breathtaking. There were two different trails (that I was aware of), one of them taking you to the bottom of the waterfall, and the other to lookout point. We went to the lookout point and had a pretty decent view. The mountain was kinda steep and covered with leaves around this time (Mid-October), so it was slightly slippery. We had a pretty great time. There were plenty of other people, so it's not extremely secluded, so if you're looking for something that's more private these trails probably wouldn't be the best choice. I would definitely recommend to another couple, we had a blast! read more

So beautiful! Well worth the drive and the hike. If you want to go to the gorge (i.e., the swimming hole at the bottom of the waterfall) purchase a permit online before coming. It was $6 per person and more than worth the money. On the website, you can see how many permits are left for the day, so it's kinda helpful if you want to go on a less busy day. Decent sized parking lot as well. We went to the gift shop/visitors center to get a map, and had our names checked off. The hike is through the river. Although, water shoes are recommended, I went in my sneakers and was fine. Soaking wet sneakers were not super fun, but still totally doable. The water reached my knees at some points, but I never felt that it was dangerous. The worst that could happen would be some scraped shins. We went on a weekday so it wasn't too crowded. But I some parts of the hike/trial are narrow and can fit people in a single file, so I could see it getting backed up when busy, so def recommend to come on an off day. read more

This place was great before it became Instagram famous and overrun and eventually shut down. There was some accidents/death due to flash flooding so the gorge has been shutdown for over two months. It has also been shutdown for swift currents after rain occasionally. You essentially can't get in the water indefinitely. Without that aspect there isn't much to see here. There are some hiking trails but you could do that without driving 1.5 hours from Nashville. The view was the falls and gorge and it's hard to even see with parts of the trails closed. My recommendation is always check the website before you go to see if the gorge is open but expect it not to be. read more

The actual bottom where the falls are seem amazing and if well equipped for a hike I'm sure worth it. As a hiker who generally is motivated by the reward of a beautiful waterfall for my efforts, I like this place. That being said, I came on a day that offered me a different experience in two ways. 1) It rained really HARD the night before, so the water level was WAAAAY UP! I'm not exactly sure what it's like under normal conditions being it was my first time, but OH MY GAWD it was a difficult trek through the river to get to the base of the falls. The first part of the trail leading to the falls along the river is fairly easy and dry. However, you MUST zigzag across the river in two locations if you want to continue to the falls. One is a fairly long walk straight through the center. The flow was so heavy that the water was slightly muddy, which made it difficult to see where you were stepping or how deep the water would be once your foot landed. Several times I found myself thigh deep in water on slippery stones fighting a current that wanted desperately to flip me on my bottom... but I didn't let it! I found a large stick to helped me feel my way through the water and keep me balanced. It was so difficult after the first crossing that a family with young children I'd helped cross once decided to go back when they reached the second and longer crossing. As first timers, it was hard to know exactly what the best and safest path through the water is to make it to the falls. Believe me, EVERYONE who made it to the falls on this day did so out of sheer determination. --- 2) I arrived very early (7:25am) before the gates were even open. A local older gentleman actually opened the gate around 7:50am, not the park rangers. So myself and two other family were able to get to the falls and enjoy its serenity long before the crowds arrived to ruin the peace. I've seen the photo's of the lower waterfall ledges jam packed with people. I truly don't think I would enjoy this waterfall under those conditions. I stayed for about 40 minutes, just when others began to arrive. Most families had tween-age kids, but none too young. A few were really loud, which made me happy I'd arrived so early and already had a nice peaceful experience. --- The hike back through the water was easier, especially since I had already discovered all the wrong ways to go where the water was too deep. The water never made it past my knees on the return trip to my car. I passed this knowledge on to other families I saw along the way whom looked stuck and bewildered, wondering which way to go next. It was the hike back up the dirt trail that was most difficult. The hike was all downhill to the falls, which means you will pay your fair toll on the return trip back up. The section of the trail closest to the river had no railing and a VERY STEEP drop-off so be careful, especially with young children. A slip here surely would be an injury (if not a tragedy). By the time I made it back to the fork in the trail that sends you either to the falls or to the overlook, the park rangers were putting up a chain sign closing the trail. He told me the water was just to high and it was just then I heard a voice from his walkie-talkie say "I've made it to the bottom and will be sending everyone here back up!" FINAL THOUGHTS I was grateful that I had a chance to visit the base of the falls, especially since I had traveled so far from home and stayed in a hotel overnight just to be one of the first visitors in the morning. It was a far more difficult hike than I had expected, but I was glad nonetheless for the experience. I was also glad I'd done this trip solo without my family. They certainly would not have followed me through the water with the same determination to see the trail to its finish. SIDE NOTE: I was originally only going to see the falls from the overlook, so I hiked to it first. But the view from the overlook is disappointing and not at all worth the wasted energy getting there. Seeing THIS waterfall from the base is the only way to experience it! The falls were beautiful along with the trails. You need a permit to go down to the falls and they suggested getting them online because they sell out quick which is what happened today. You will also have to watch the safety video before going down to the falls. So we could only go to the overlook trail. I wouldn't not recommend anyone handicapped go because of how advanced the area is to get to the falls, it's impossible to wheel something around and also small babies with all the slippery rocks! read more

Highly recommend taking a day trip out to Cummins Falls if you are near Nashville! I'm not really much of an outdoorsy person, but absolutely loved this hike! My biggest tip is to GO EARLY! Less crowded = better pictures of the waterfall :) Plenty of parking spots and there are restrooms available by the start of the trail. Hike in water shoes or old tennis shoes you don't mind getting wet. You should be prepared to cross over the stream multiple times and get wet. Do NOT hike in flip flops! There are lots of slippery areas. Definitely bring water/snacks, especially in the summer because the sun does get hot and you'll get hydrated. It took approximately 45mins for my group to get to the waterfall. The view is so rewarding! Beautiful waterfall and the water is crystal clear and fresh. You can even jump off into the pool, or sit in the shade and people watch. Definitely a wonderful experience. The hike difficulty was 2/5 in my opinion. read more

My friends and I were on a road trip and came here around 5 PM and the park closes at 6 PM in the summer. Thus, our race to the bottom to beat the time and hopefully see the base of the waterfall. But we were cut short because the park rangers were on their way up and clearing people out. Thus, we missed our chance to see the actual waterfall but the hike itself is pretty enough. I will just have to make another trip to see the waterfall for myself. Besides the hike, there is a huge parking lot and a camp site nearby. There is a restroom at the start of the hike and it is ...gross and dirty. Other than that, just keep an eye out for baby/small snakes because we saw one on our hike. This waterfall is located just about an hour east of Nashville so this was our pit stop before heading to Nashville. read more

Take a hike--here! This is a beautiful, unique, pet-friendly and well-maintained park. My husband saw a Facebook ad for this area and it looked too good to be true; well, it's everything in the ad and more. If you enjoy actively exploring the outdoors and swimming, this is your place! My daughters (13, 10) and I decided to stop by one afternoon while driving from Knoxville to Memphis. We wore swimsuits, shorts and sturdy water shoes as recommended. We took a small backpack with water and a few snacks. The hike to the falls is about 1/3 on land and 2/3 in the river bed in ankle to waist deep water depending upon the path you choose. Overall, it took us 45 minutes to walk from the trailhead to the falls where we enjoyed a great swim. We hiked back in another 45 minutes and used the restrooms near the parking lot for a wardrobe change. Tips: The trail back is upstream and uphill so save some energy. The hike is not for the faint of heart--literally. Make sure you have the stamina to walk uphill on sometimes narrow, rocky terrain. You will have to maintain your balance on slippery rocks. Use caution with small children as well. read more

REFRESHING. BEAUTIFUL. Perfect way for me to end my summer. After 20+ years of living in TN, I can't believe I didn't know about this beautiful swimming hole tucked away. The rundown: -The trails are pretty wide and worn down from lots of people (good so you can always see a clear path) -There's a downstream shortcut you can take to get straight to the falls (no trail is more than 0.5 miles one way) -Be prepared for more slippery, steep paths near the river. -After the trail, it takes about 15-20 mins to get to the falls. -Some parts of the swimming hole can get deep, so be sure to be able to tread water if you go in those parts. *Bring water sandals or shoes or shoes that have good traction because a lot of the rocks are slippery from moss. Overall I loved getting a good moderate workout and feeling so refreshed from swimming and wading. There is a good amount of people in the summer probably b/c of the kids out of school, we went on a Monday afternoon. read more

I read a few reviews before coming here and was kind of concerned... but all in all I can honestly say it was a fun adventure. It's as safe as you make it. We all took it slow and had fun getting to the falls. It takes about 40 minutes to get there and that's about how much time it took us. We spent 2 hours total between getting there, hanging out at the falls, and returning. It's dog friendly as I saw a number of people with large dogs going down the path. It's a very popular spot so you want to get there early. As we left we ran into a large number of people heading toward the falls. There are two forks in the path. Both times you can choose to go left to the overlook or right to the falls. If you choose to go to the overlook you cannot go from there to the falls. You also cannot jump off the top of the falls safely so please don't do it. There's a trail leading you to the river but once there it's pretty much on your own. You go left to get to the falls and I guess you could go right and go exploring but I have no idea where it would take it. Anyway, as you go, you have to cross the river a few times so go ahead and accept that your shoes will get wet. The rocks are also slippery and shift around so you really want to take that slowly. There's a portion where you can cross the river via a tree trunk and we did it because it was sturdy and fun. Not exactly something you can use to cross back but still fun. Hubby says it was easier to cross over a little bit before that part so if you're not feeling adventurous you could do that. On the way to the falls we ran into a park official by complete happenstance and got a ton of questions answered as well as some advice for how not to get hurt. He requests that people don't jump around on the rocks at the actual falls as this is how many people have twisted/broken their ankles or broken legs. He said in those kind of circumstances the people who are hurt have to hobble back up on their own. At the falls, the official told me the first two shelves are safest to climb on but they don't recommend people climbing higher. Of course, people were climbing way higher when I was there but again they can't stop people from making their own decisions. They have life jackets if you'd like. The water gets deep around the falls but only in like one little spot. The water is also freezing but once you're in you pretty much go numb. I read a few people mention the shortcut route back up- DON'T TAKE IT! The park official told me it's the emergency trail they use when needed. He said it's like a straight shot up and involves climbing a rock face. They try to dissuade people from taking that trail but again can't seem to keep people off of it. One guy actually fell and busted his head, collapsed a lung, broke his back, and was in a coma for a bit after he fell and they had to airlift him out. So all in all, it was a fun adventure to do once, but nothing I would want to go back and do. It's also as safe as you make it so please take your time and stay safe! read more
