I'm behind on my review for Cupcakes and Things. However, I was very impressed with their customer service and wanted to provide a review. I called the bakery on a Thursday morning in late January to request a gender reveal cake. We had just finished with our ultrasound appointment at the doctor and received the gender for our baby. I had called another bakery first, which said they needed 2 weeks notice - we just wanted something for that weekend (in about 3-4 days). When I called Cupcakes and Things, a male answered the phone and was very professional and polite. He informed me that they could start on the cake and have it finished by noon! (In about 4 hours!). We told them we could stop by around 5pm. Now, our request was for a simple vanilla cake with oreo frosting and oreo decorations - with the middle buttercream dyed the color to represent the gender (blue for boy, pink for girl). But it was no issue for this bakery! I was very impressed with the service and the cake was perfect for a small family occasion. It was beautiful and delicious! read more

This is a super cute little bakery, with yummy cupcakes and baked goods. I was recently JONESING for a freaking cupcake, so my loving husband found this place on yelp for me. As we arrived, I realized that I'd actually been here before! The cupcake displays and flavors were really cool! They have some cupcakes in the regular display, and some (most likely buttercream based) in a refrigerated display. The regular display cupcakes were quirky and tasty, but the frosting was little overly whipped for me. The refrigerated ones were denser, creamier, and tastier. I also had an edible cookie dough bite, and it was FANTASTIC, if a little pricy. The bakery itself is small, and there isn't any seating. We bought ours, then sat in the car to eat some! In conclusion, it was good, but not spectacular. I'll go again when I'm craving cupcakes, or for a special treat, but I wouldn't go all the way out of my way to drive out there on a regular day. read more

I've been eyeing this place every time I eat next door or pick up food at Chun Wah Kam but I haven't had the guts to pick some up after overfilling my tummy with manapuas. I finally made the effort to pick up a couple of cupcakes, guava cream cheese and orange dream. Both were really delicious, not dry, tasty, yet it left me wanting for a bit more. However the price for a single cupcake isn't something I would necessarily splurge on. Also, cupcakes aren't really my go to dessert but for a party, it's a must. No need to cut, just pass it out! If I were to have a small gathering or birthday party, I would more than likely splurge on the dessert table, but for my bigger family size parties, mmmm maybe not. I chose this place to get a bday cake for my nephew. There was a specific theme I wanted for the cake (Shrugging face emoji) and it's right across from where the party would be. First of all the people that work there just seem angry and uninterested in helping with getting your order in. I ask a lot of questions because I wanted to be specific. I initially asked about getting a round cake for the emoji but was told the hands would get cut off (not sure why since it can be shrunk, but I'm not the professional) The First Lady I spoke with then said you can talk to my manager so he can explain it better. I got to talking to the manager. I asked if 1/4 sheet cake would be better to fit the emoji face I wanted and he said yes because the hands will have room. Ok great! I'll get a 1/4 sheet, this is the flavor etc etc... He shows me how big the 1/4 sheet would be using a regular size print paper as an example, assured me that the 1/4 sheet will work better for the emoji print, then he proceeded to fill out the order form. Then I asked about adding cupcakes around, he specifically said 3 cupcakes to the left and the right of the 1/4 sheet and 4 in the front and there will be empty space on the top. I'm in agreement, I've imagined that was better than placing it on the round with ensuring the hands don't get cut off on the emoji. The day of the party I come in to pick up and again I'm greeted with grumpy faces and the cake order is wrong. I didn't receive a Copy of the order form when I came in 6 days earlier so I didn't catch that I was actually charged for a 1/2 sheet. So there was a huge cake, with 10 cupcakes spread out around unlike how it was explained when I ordered it. I intended to feed 15 kids. Not 50. There's nothing that could be done to fix it. And the manager tried to say that only the emoji print was going to be 1/4 size. So I reiterated what he described the cake would look like I'm terms of size. Not once was it mentioned that the cake itself would be 1/2 sheet and the photo 1/4. Should've known this the day i walked in to order it he did not write every detail down on paper like he should've. My mistake for trusting that they would make it the way I expected. I'm really disappointed in the fact that the people here lack in customer service skills. Learn to smile a bit, people will walk in to your establishment and be turned off by your attitude and unwelcoming faces. I got the marble cake. With 10 chocolate poop frosting cupcakes around a 1/2 sheet (should've of been 1/4) of "marble cake" and there was only marbling in the center. It was porous and almost dry if not for the fudge. The cupcakes were ok...not worth $3.24 IMO. I'll just go back to ordering cakes at Safeway. read more

Excellent food product with a great presentation. I've got to ding them a few stars for food handling procedures that were witnessed. Otherwise would be 5 stars. PROs: The pumpkin bread was outstanding. Great way to incorporate the Fall season into the island life style. CONs: When we walked in to the bakery the employee was in the back baking (to be expected in a bakery). She was properly wearing food handling gloves, but when she came to the front to serve us and give us our order she didn't take her gloves off, not a big deal. After she gave us our dishes she then took our money with her gloves on and then went back to making food in the back with the same gloves. I don't know why but my impression of this place from the day I ordered my custom cake to the second time I came in to pick it up was that my business wasn't exactly appreciated. Perhaps I read in between the lines too much but that's what I left with. I honestly can't remember if I even got a thank you (on both visits). What especially sucked was that I didn't realize they offer a discount for Isle discount members (ID card). I didn't want to call them right then thinking it might jeopardize my cake so I just mentioned it in passing when I picked up my cake. Of course they couldn't do anything to compensate me since it was too late but I wasn't too sure why since I got a mumbled response about having to re-do something or whatever. The cake itself didn't come out exactly how I wanted but it was still pretty. Although it was really heavy for some reason but I didn't ask why because I felt it might irritate them. I'm not even sure how the cake tasted but just based on my experience I don't think I'll be a returning customer. Pros: The brides favorite cake is cookies & cream so I did appreciate that was one of the cake filling options, actually they had so many flavors to choose from. Stopped by today to pick up a cupcake for my son and I. This is the second time in a few years that we've tried this bakery. Both times it was disappointing. The woman behind the counter used her outside voice to tell us to use the hand sanitizer before walking around the store. We walked around to see all the beautiful cupcakes and cookies, breads and refrigerated desserts that they had. They're very appealing to the eye, packaged nicely. The bakery is very organized and clean. We ordered a couple of cupcakes to go. They were dry and tasteless and seemed a few days old. The frosting tastes like it sat in a plastic container that has absorbed too much dishwasher solution. I keep giving this place a chance and keep getting let down. I've come to this cupcake place a total of three times across a few years. Each time I've been disappointed. This time I got 7 cupcakes all different flavors and a piece of Chantilly cake. The frosting of the two cupcakes I tasted, Carrot cupcake and their character cupcake tasted rancid. I had to throw them out. The Chantilly cake didn't taste anywhere near Liliha Bakery Chantilly, the cake itself was good but the Chantilly hardly had any flavor. This place lacks consistency. Also, I'm super upset at how luke warm their cupcakes were because most of them sit out and are not refrigerated--almost like they don't want to spend the extra money for additional refrigeration. I visit this area at least once a week so passing this shop sure can be tempting! The cupcakes are cute but not my fave. Same with the donuts and pastries. They're alright. I really enjoy their refrigerated cakes the most. Banana chantilly is a favorite, as well as the cheesecakes! On occasion I'll have to pick up butter mochi for my kids, but again, nothing special. I absolutely love chantilly but not all chantilly frosting are made equally. The chantilly here is great! The banana cake is so moist too. I wish I could say the same for the cupcakes... they're not dry, just not as moist or flavorful as I'd like. They do have interesting designs and flavors though. They do large orders for parties or even wedding cakes. It's convenient being right next to Chun Wah Kam and Hula Boba, it's a one stop shop for lunch, dinner and everything in between. Also, the freeway cut off is right beyond the stop light to head off wherever in a flash. I love this location for everything there is to offer in the surrounding area! Parking is never a bother, lots to go around in the lot. As far as pricing for sweets, it really is decently priced. But if you have a sweet tooth, it can be dangerous... lots to choose from! read more

I was having a major cupcake craving and we landed here since it was on our side of the island. I got 6 flavors and my favorites were the tiramisu & chocolate decadence. I didn't even finish the lemon blueberry cupcake. For the most part, I would recommend this place but I don't know if I would come back for more than one at a time. It did satisfy my sweet tooth though and the gentlemen working the counter was very kind! Update** Came back for a second try and this time only ordered our favorites + German chocolate! After hearing about the place, I thought to try it. The staff was pleasant and nice. I heard from my sister that she liked the place and my sister bakes and cooks a great deal, so when she's complimentary, that is a good sign, not to mention that she's lived in Italy, Japan and Thailand and sampled foods across the country and the world, so I trust her. Now, I should have snapped a picture of the 1 dessert that I thought I would deviate from my sugar guidelines, which was a Pumpkin crunch piece. It is slightly more than a coffee shop dessert but it is a huge piece, which I've rationing for the last couple of days. It satisfies my desire for a dessert and it's pumpkin, which is squash? So we decided to take a drive to Kapolei yesterday and was searching for a bakery and came across cupcake and things. Upon walking in to the bakery, I thought I was in a candy shop as I saw all these colorful cupcakes, donuts, cookies, pies and baked goods! Wow! So, my 2 stars is based on the quality of the cupcakes, not how pretty the cupcakes look. Because actually I've tasted better cupcakes and was very disappointed with the cupcakes. The frosting was light like they tasted like meringue. Well, maybe to some, it's good because it's not sweet, but to me, it was lacking some flavor. The marble fudge, I was surprised to find fudge oozing out from the middle of the cupcake! so, the cupcake itself to me got a little messy. The prices are 2.99 for the singles or 11.99 for 4. I've come to this bakery a few times after noticing it. It's a nice little shop next to Chun Wah Kam in Kapolei. I've bought cupcakes on two occasions as well as other baked goods. They were all very good. My only disappointment with this bakery is that they don't give refunds. Only Store Credit. I was looking to get a birthday cake for a co-worker. The co-worker wanted a lemon crunch cake. While The Alley is famous for their lemon crunch cake, I noticed on the website menu that this bakery has one too for about $35. So i called the store on Friday to place my order for a pick up on Monday. The girl answering the fold told me my total was about $58 and some odd cents. So when i questioned the difference in price, she told me that what was on the menu was for a 9-inch "single layer" cake not a "double layer" which is what she thought i wanted. So i asked her if their's was better than The Alley, she said she hadn't tried The Alley, but she really liked theirs. So i thought about, and decided to go ahead and place my order. After considering it even further, the following day, I decided to look at The Alley's menu. I discovered that a 9-inch, three layer, lemon crunch cake from The Alley was $35. I decided that I rather have The Alley's three layer cake for half almost half the price. So i called the bakery back and asked if it was too late to cancel my order. The staff answering the phone indicated that it was not too late to cancel my order, but they don't give refunds, they just give store credit. I was very disappointed, as they could have just not charged my account. But since i plan to go back there some day to get cup cakes, i figured it was okay. I will still shop at this bakery as i think their cupcakes and other baked goods are pretty reasonably priced. But very disappointed that they only give store credit. Again, i cancelled my order two days before i was to pick up my order. And they hadn't charged my credit card yet, because it hasn't shown up. So i don't know why i have to have store credit. read more

I was in the mood for some Cupcakes and had no idea where to get any here in Kapolei, so of course per usual, I took to Yelp to find somewhere and came across this place. Although their pricing is a bit much, I have to admit, they are very well worth what you pay for. I couldn't decide on exactly what I wanted, I opted for their 4 pack. Being that I had a 3-year-old with me, you know I let him have the pleasure of choosing at least 2 of them. We ended up deciding on their Mint Chocolate, Nutella, Cookies and Cream, and their Original(he chose it because of the Rainbow candy on top). Each and every Cupcake was very tasteful and looked just as great as it tasted. Normally, cupcakes are really sweet but these were all perfect to Taste! As kapolei starts building up I'm very excited to see all these new cool shops pop up (even though I don't think this place is very new). Labeled as "gourmet cupcakes" they serve a multitude of flavors. I got 6 cupcakes because I couldn't resist trying more than 1 flavor. Red velvet: it's alright, not extremely moist, your standard red velvet Chocolate raspberry: not super moist, but the topping is deliciously sweet and raspberry tasting. The center is filled with raspberry sauce - a nice surprise Chocolate peanut butter - YES SO GOOD Oreo - the vanilla is a nice addition to the yummy icing, tastes exactly like an Oreo Banana Chantilly - literally tastes like banana bread with chantilly icing Blueberry lemon - it's good, sweet, soft, a little better than average store cupcakes Additionally got a Lilikoi bar. The crust was a little too thick for my tasting and the Lilikoi jelly part wasn't a strong sweet taste, but a nice subdued level. The cupcakes were yummy don't get me wrong, but I couldn't help and obsess over the outrageous price. Definitely overpriced, just because you label them gourmet doesn't mean you can charge an arm and a leg. For the expensive price they've lost 2 stars :( read more

We were visiting from the main land and celebrating our son's 3rd birthday. He randomly requested a "mango cake" and so our search began for a local bakery who could accommodate his special birthday request in just 2 days. After a few calls we came across this cupcake bakery who was happy to accommodate! They made a beautiful 9" round double layer mango cake, with mango cream cheese frosting and it was soooo delicious! Very moist, and rich - and the frosting was light and the perfect amount of tropical tangy taste! Highly recommend for cupcakes and special order cakes! I paid 90 something dollar for a custom cake that is supposed to be layered with strawberry and cream fillings but all they did is put one layer of strawberry cream fillings in the middle of a soaked sponge cake, they literally cut the sponge cake in the middle in half and put a thin layer of strawberry cream, this is very disappointing for a almost a hundred dollar cake, we will not order birthday cakes here again not worth the price or taste. read more

This is an email I sent to the owner after my wedding. It details the mistakes made. I have not received a response: Hello Mr. Herbert, While I do appreciate the communication with you during the time leading up to our wedding, I do have to say that I am very disappointed in the outcome.  There are several factors that I believe we deserve at least a partial refund for: 1)      The cupcakes we ordered were Nutella and you (partially) delivered some sort of yellow cake.  Attached is the email you sent Jessie confirming our cake order to be Nutella. 2)      Attached is also the invoice you sent us which included decorations with small and large pearls.  The cupcakes were as basic as could be with only a dollop of either pink or green icing on top. 3)      When sent you the base access form and asked you to have the delivery driver fill it out,  you filled it out with your personal information.  This caused the actual delivery driver to be denied access.  I specifically remember you telling me that you have had to deliver to bases multiple times and were aware of the procedures.  Your "overlook" caused my father-in-law to stop what he was doing and run to the gate to pick up the cupcakes himself. I hope you understand that I do appreciate your hard work but as I'm sure you know, weddings are expensive and planned out for a reason.... You only get one chance to get it right.    If anything, I want you to be aware of these errors so that you might be more vigilant in your future wedding orders. read more
