Do you like thought-provoking and high-quality foreign films?…read more You could certainly catch a show at Nashville's appealing Belcourt Theatre (http://www.belcourt.org/) -- but did you also know that Vanderbilt has an International Lens series of films that it shows for FREE on its campus?! Here's the link to this season's lineup - http://www.vanderbilt.edu/internationallens/ Tonight I saw a tragic and thought-provoking Austrian film about Jewish counterfeiters working in a Nazi concentration camp during WWII (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0813547). Sure, perhaps I could have borrowed the film from the library, but Vanderbilt gave me the opportunity to see it on the big screen along with a brief introduction and post-show discussion led by a German professor. And did I mention this was free?! Gosh I love living near a major university that is willing to open its arms to the surrounding community and share its cultural largess. Thank you, Vanderbilt! What else...seats are comfy and the theater is clean, but don't expect stadium seating or cup holders. Sarratt Cinema is very nice, but not particularly fancy, ostentatious or luxurious. There was a limited selection of snacks and candies available at the door. I didn't get any, but I did notice that they had some sort of special deal where you could get a free popcorn if you purchased any other concession. Some other audience members took advantage of that offer. As you might expect from the venue, the audience seemed erudite and was well-behaved during the film. The cinema is on a lower level of the Sarratt Student Center (http://www.vanderbilt.edu/studentcenters/sarratt-student-center). If you're not already familiar with its location, you may want to plan on arriving a little early to find your way around and find someplace to park. So c'mon and take a cinematic trip around the world through the magic of film and the International Lens series @ Sarratt Cinema! What did Siskel and Ebert always used to say? "Until next time, the balcony is closed." (Er, only there is no actual balcony at Sarratt Cinema. But you get the idea. Work with me, people. Work with me. Yelpover and out.)

It's also great there is free parking included in your movie ticket. The only thing to note is that there is a small theater upstairs, so good to get those tickets early because they sell out so fast.

The midnight shows are definitely the thing to do in your 20s (or if you are a night owl) - the crowds are group, the selections are always fun - it is really an energy that cannot be beat. Now, I cannot imagine voluntarily staying up until like 2:00am but still enjoy going to so many movies! As a nonprofit theatre, it just feels good to go a show at the Belcourt - like you are truly supporting a Nashville institution. They also support local by having local companies provide some of the concession snacks! It is a double treat to be able to eat a HiFi cookie while watching a movie. And somehow the popcorn is just better. I also love that a lot of podcasts and other pop-ups choose the Belcourt for their events. It is always a good time at the Belcourt no matter what you are going to see!

I graduated from the University of Tennessee undergraduate and graduate school and loved it but most of my graduating class went to Ivy League schools, Vanderbilt and even Cal Tech .If you are a high level student and want a high level education the University School of Nashville will provide you with a great education.

I clearly don't have any kiddos but I had to give a shout-out to the University School of Nashville…read morebecause I have toured the campus a couple of times and recently attended their annual Artclectic event and was very impressed with this top notch K-12 educational facility. The campus is beautiful especially with recent state of the art renovations and the staff that I have encountered were all very passionate about leveraging a student's, artistic, intellectual and athletic potential. As we all know education is a major issue in our country but this school appears to be part of the elite schools that offer an outstanding educational experience from grade school through high school graduation. It's going to cost you though, with grade school tuition at around $16,000 a year and high-school hovering at $18,000.... you must invest or pray to god they offer your student financial aid which is available. The good news is USN gives over $1.8 million in need-based financial aid to 18% of the students. Even attending the Artclectic event showcased how USN truly invests into it's educational model and really stands out from the pack of sub-par schools that are unfortunately part of the thread of the city.

Outside the front door, you're informed in big painted letters that this is a "supper club and…read morelounge." Well, now. There's no supper club here nor any lounge. In fact, there is no food here whatsoever although it's very common to order food at Red's next door and have them deliver it to you as you nurse your beer and look for this mysterious supper club and lounge. Beer is all they serve here. Even the soft drinks come from a vending machine. Just beer. Cash only. The somewhat stern looking and tough acting barkeep told someone that this is a "music venue" because they have two live shows a night. I guess I can get behind that but during the day, this is Tennessee's oldest bar and there is no music playing inside at all, no radio, no nothing. It's extremely rough around the edges (the ceiling is heavily stained and more warped than not) but most of the customers are tourists who did NOT do their homework and didn't realize it's CASH ONLY. There's an ATM inside, so I guess you have to pay the high transaction fee, fool. It's divey looking for sure but a real dive bar has scary locals inside and not 75% tourists with their fanny packs. And absolutely, please do order a Red's hot chicken sandwich next door and have them deliver it to you at Springwater. It's the best hot chicken sandwich you'll have in Nashville.

They have a great selection of $5 and $6 beers. But remember, this is a Cash Only joint. And yes, this is definitely a local joint. It's practically the opposite of anything you'll find on Lower Broadway. But, it's a great place to hang out with friends. The long Bar has a lot of stools. There are also tables with chairs and a nice pool table. The staff here are super friendly and they are always very welcoming.
