This little store is PACKED to the brim with all sorts of books, the WIDEST selection of Tarot Cards I've ever seen (though, I will say I'm a bit newer to the game), but they had legit more Tarot decks that Barnes and Noble ( and I thought they had a lot). Lots of different types of stones with clear labels on how they can aid or affect you. Lots of jewelry, incense, incense holders at really good prices, sage for cleansing, and so much more. I was curious about Curious Goods, so I checked out what was around on Yelp. The shop had a nice balance of good reviews and being within reasonable bounds of my return trip to Hartford from New Haven, so I opted to head over. Since it is on a thruway, there weren't a lot of parking options. (I ended up pulling my very small car up to a very big pickup so that I wouldn't interfere with any side street driveways.) As I approached the store front, I was optimistic, but then I saw a sign that (I thought) said 2 customers at a time. So when I and another group were waved inside, I asked about it, and a male employee sort of hand waved it off (instead of informing me that it actually says 12, as I ended up seeing on another sign in the shop). So that was my initial vibe. I worked at a store that sold--almost exclusively--rocks, semi-precious stones, and crystals, so I was definitely judging the dozens of bins along the central aisle against my own experience. With that in mind, I found a lot of the raw stones to be pretty low quality. I struggled to find any flash on a chunk of labradorite. The amethyst was inconsistently pigmented. And so forth. However, as I browsed the bookshelves--highly organized by subject, very nice!!--the employee and his friend (?) were replaced by someone who definitely seemed like she belonged there in the store. She was helpful and knowledgeable, attentive but never pushy. She also helped me to see more closely some tarot decks in a glass case, which was really nice. I have some social anxiety, but I never felt hesitant about asking a question. My overall impression of the shop is somewhere between 3 and 4 stars. Initially we were looking at 2 or 3, but it's amazing what a shift change does for a place. You might as well stop in, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here. Great place, crystal prices are completely responsible, and it is overall a great experience! Some of their items can be on the pricey side, but still pretty reasonable for the product. I tried to humor one of the store attendants, which they did not receive well but I completely understand. They seem to be knowledgeable, which they pride themselves on. It is pretty much ridiculous how great this place is. First of all, it's the occult/witchy/metaphysical shop of your dreams, pretty much. Tons of stones/semi-precious gems that are clearly labeled. They have a huge wall of herbs behind the counter, tons of incense of all different kinds, and an amazing variety of books - shelves upon shelves upon shelves. Everything is well organized and clearly labeled, and the one time I went there I was genuinely sad to leave - I've never seen another store like that, and there's *nothing* like that where I live now (Ohio). If you're looking for Ancient Egyptian or Viking statues, they have a ton - my only complaint (and I wouldn't really call it that) was that I didn't see a lot of animal or Celtic figures, but they can't reasonably stock *everything.* They had everything I could imagine needing, including beautiful leather wraps for journals/writing. The clientele was diverse and friendly, and the staff was really wonderful - they were helpful when I had questions, and I heard one of the guys behind the counter fielding two calls for quite a while, basically giving free advice/guidance/therapy to folks who had called to ask questions. He was gracious and patient throughout both calls as well as with all of the customers (me included). I ended up leaving with just a book and a couple of stones and incense, but they really had SO much more that I could have spent money and time on. I remember this store from long ago being very small, it is much expanded. The store is filled with the absolute best selection I have seen in CT of gemstones in clusters, polished, or uncut, at very reasonable prices. There are several types of sage if you're into that. I was really struggling on whether to give this two or three stars because one of the men working there was very kind and very helpful to me. The other man (older) made me feel extremely uncomfortable with his misogynistic micro aggressions. Ultimately, I have to go with the two stars because the experience left me feeling angry and misunderstood. I don't think I'll go back again and that's unfortunate because there aren't many shops like this in the area. Also, the older man seemed to know nothing about witchcraft. I stated that I was looking to deepen my spiritual practice and he asked me "what happened to you? A divorce?" As if the only reason a woman would want to deepen her spiritual practice is if she experienced trauma?!? I hope this man educates himself and becomes a better human because his ignorance hurts others and his business. read more

A pretty uncomfortable place to be as a poc. There are some pretty racist books on the shelf, about how "anyone" can appropriate traditions from cultures that aren't theirs. This is a small business and they tend to be busy so make sure you have time to look around while being patient if you have a lot of questions. It seems like all the reviews for Curious Goods are quite old. There is a lot new at the store..it got bigger. Sambina moved to the space directly beside the old store and it is four times as large now. This means four times the unique shopping opportunities The book section is huge and eclectic. There is a rock, crystal, geodes section that is most beautiful. Of course there are the old standards like sage, candles, essential oils, etc only more of them. Statuary for all is on display... Norse, Egyptian, fairies and more. Gifts for Yule abound as do calendars, date books and the pagan equivalent of the Old Farmers Almanac. The readers like Liz S and Eric are right on the mark. Gift certificates are offered for those who need them. Magick Mondays are still going and the classes are safe, friendly and the instructors are informative and knowledgeable. It is a warm welcoming shop that has been there for over 20 years. Check the schedules there are many classes and activities going on even for children. If you have never been there or not been there in a while give yourself a treat and stop by for a Spell. read more

It's well stocked with a plethora of books, tarot decks, jewelry, crystals, music, herbs, sage, runes, dream catchers, essential oils and incense. Of course I probably missed a few items, but it's safe to assert that you'll find just about anything you need if you're an adherent of alternative spirituality. I have been a practitioner of the craft for many years and lived in this state for more years than I wish to admit. This store filled me with a calm and welcomed me while many discourage having a male in their presence that walk a path similar to mine. I left feeling refreshed though my account was lighter in money. Never had I found a store that supplies and supports an entire community such as this. What can I say about Curious Goods? They've been in business as long as I've been alive and they are certainly a staple of Campbell Avenue. I started shopping here frequently when I was 21 and felt the urge to go buy some crystals. It turned into a new hobby of mine and I was so happy to find beautiful and unique stones to take home. As Christine C. mentioned, this is a very casual and accepting place and anyone can appreciate the incense, candles, books and CD's and everything else they offer. The jewelry is beautiful and this is a great place to find unique gifts. Sambina, the owner, is very nice and willing to answer any of your questions. She'll also order books or items that may not be in stock if you ask. They have a Magic Monday club that is themed each week from 7-9 pm costing $10 per class. Great store - LOTS of fantastic stuff for every interest and also holds classes and workshops. Love the selection of incense, oils, candles, jewelry, spell kits (for good magic), stones, crystals, clothing, capes - you name it, the store has it! I even bought two wands with crystals at the ends for my two daughters - they wont necessarily appreciate that they are "real" wands but they will LOVE them anyway (they are Wizards of Waverly Place fans lol). By far this has been the best shop I've been to. Since I don't have one in my immediate area I had to venture out and I'm so glad I did. The only downside to finding this place is that it's an hour or so away from my house and won't be able to take advantage of the classes and come up more often. My first visit to Curious Goods was back in middle school, and since then it became a staple to stop here on my way home after classes throughout high school and early college. After a long day I would stop in and buy a few pick me up treats or small items for my altar or some herbs to make myself some creativity inducing sachets to keep me sane during a long day at the art studio. I currently am in NY for school, but whenever I come back home to CT I always, always, always make some time to replenish my stash of herbs, stones or any other needs here. I can't tell you how hard it is to find such a cozy and lovely little store like this in the city. I am so happy and it honestly fills me with pride, that a shop like this has been around for so long on the West Haven green.
