I recently purchased some currency from CEI for friends that are traveling to Eastern Europe next month. The money arrived on time and the waiting line at the store was not too bad. What was bad was the customer service. My order contained many bills, and the lady serving me just handed the loose bills to me. Which I thought was kind of strange. I asked for an envelope in which to keep the currency. She said the woman just ahead of me got the last envelope. End of discussion, apparently. I asked her if she could take a look just in case there might be one somewhere, and that would really help me out. She said no. And sure enough, she did not look for an envelope, or try to help in any way. Maybe if she'd at least have tried I might have felt a little better about the experience. But there wasn't even a little courtesy Not good customer service. Next time I'm buying foreign currency, I may use CEI, but not at this location. read more

This is apparently the best spot to convert foreign currencies due to their best rate match guarantee on any given day and/or time, and I didn't bother to get quotes from other places but their conversion rate was good enough for me and I appreciated that it was located centrally in a nice mall in Santa Ana. Misleading Phone Quotes and Unfulfilled Rate Guarantee I am sharing this factual account of my experience to help other consumers save time. I called this location ahead of time to confirm the exchange payout for €1,500 cash. Over the phone, I was quoted a dollar payout in the high $1,900s. Based on this confirmation, I immediately drove to the store. Upon arrival, the representative informed me that the phone quote was a mistake--the employee had accidentally provided the store's *selling* rate (what a consumer pays to buy Euros) rather than their *buying* rate (what the store pays to purchase Euros). The actual walk-in rate offered to me was 1.05, a near 9% spread away from the current mid-market baseline of roughly 1.15. This lower rate meant a difference of over $150 less than expected. Furthermore, this business features prominent signage stating "Best Rate Guaranteed." I challenged the staff on this policy and offered to provide a digital recording and phone transcript proving that a competitor (Continental Currency) had just quoted me a buy rate of 1.12. Despite their advertised guarantee to offer the best rate, management refused to match the competitor's 1.12 rate, offering only to slightly adjust their own rate from 1.05 to 1.08. I declined the 1.08 counteroffer and took my business to the competitor instead. Prospective customers should be aware that phone quotes from this branch may not be reliable, and their advertised "Best Rate Guarantee" may not be honored, even when direct proof of a competitor's superior rate is presented. read more

This started off great. Would have been at least a 4. I ordered the different currency I needed knowing it wasn't your typical exchange. I didn't hear anything for 3 days via email so decided to call. A very nice girl named (spelling?) Minol said let me find out if it's at Main Place. She couldn't get through but said I'll call you back, She called me back and said it was available. So we went to the Main Place location, instructions were excellent to get there. The girl behind the counter was very short with us. I asked why we didn't get an email that the currency was received and she shrugged it off. Said it wasn't the typical currency, which I knew but we never got notification they had the currency. . There was no one else she was helping and just didn't seem to care. We paid for the currency and left. It could have been so much better with people skills. read more

So I asked how much the exchange fee for US dollars to Pesos, and she said there is none. I'll be going to Mexico next week, and I wanted to get my money changed before flying. This was very York and easy. They do have a security guard stationed there, so that put my mind at ease. I will be back when we'll be headed to Europe. read more

Wow do not go to this place to exchange your money, huge ass rip off. I went here to exchange to the Vietnamese Dong, and it's my fault I didn't check but it's suppose to be for every dollar they would give 25,000 but instead they gave me 16,000 instead. I gave them $400 for 6,600,000. So if I wanted to exchange back they would only give me $230 so I pretty much lost $170, and the reason is that people use the currency for investment purposes. That has got to be the lamest excuse I've ever heard. Yes it's my fault I should have just declined and I didn't realize until after I did the exchange. From the list of "places I've always seen and knew was there for over 20 years but never had any reason to go there until now." I recently found some old Canadian money from the 1980's. After researching, I found it was only worth face value, and this place was recommended if I wanted to exchange it. I checked the hours online but was still curious if they were open because I don't recall ever seeing somebody there. Sure enough, though, they were open, and someone was sitting at the desk. This was my first experience in exchanging currency. I'm getting ready to travel internationally and start seeing places on my bucket list. It is easy to find on the first floor right by the Macy's entrance (inside the MainPlace Mall). They post the daily exchange rates for many currencies. They are stocked with currency readily available. You are charged a processing fee based on the amount you purchase. For example, for $200 or less, there is a $3 charge (using cash or debit card). If you use a credit card, there is a 3% added fee. Be sure to mention that you are a Yelpie for their discount. Very helpful service. read more

I don't recommend this place for currency exchange. I called to get the currency rates for euro and pounds before going there. When I got there she gave us a totally different rate. She said she never talked to me on the phone. I redialed the number, it was her phone I called. She said she might be on lunch break, and the other location picked up. She said different location have different rates. She let us wait for a good 20 minutes to call the "director". The rate she gave us on the phone wasn't honored. We cancelled and left. You can reserve currency using their website which makes it very convenient knowing that when they call, after you receive the confirmation email, that your order is ready to pick up with a 4 day grace period. I chose to use Currency Exchange due to convenience, location and past experience. I always start any review with 5 stars; here's how my recent experience with Currency Exchange ended with 1 star. Minus 1 Star: Received an email stating my order has been reserved. When I went to pick up my order, the associate said it will not be ready until 3pm the next day, and I will get a confirmation email or a call. Minus 1 Star: Did not receive a call nor a confirmation the next day. When I called them shortly after 3pm to verify, I was told it would not be ready until after 5pm, and I will get a call when it's ready. Did not get a call so I headed there around 6pm. My order was ready. Minus 1 Star: I paid for my order with a credit card. It was not explained to me that the purchase would be processed as a "cash advance" which I found out when the cash advance fee and daily interest hit my account 4 days later. Called the bank and they said the merchant coded the transaction as a cash advance. After additional research, buried in the FAQs of their website, a vague explanation that credit card company "... may categorize this transaction as a Cash Advance and apply their own fees. CXI has no control over how a credit card company categorizes these transactions." The credit card company said they don't have control over how merchants process their transactions. Minus 1 Star: When making the purchase at the branch, the associate did not explain, nor did I see a sign posted, that credit card credit card transactions will be processed as cash advances. I did, however, ask if there are any charges using the credit card, and I was told "no." I understand a business's purpose is to make money. But learn from my experience ... in addition to the exchange fee + lower exchange rate vs actual exchange rate + cash advance fee + daily interest = a very costly purchase. For reference, the exchange rate was 1.56 to the US dollar on 12/2 but CXI's rate for the same currency was 1.40 to the US dollar. read more

They are not going to give you market exchange rate. And they charge a fee. If you're going to Europe- ask your bank for money exchange - or just use your credit cards - as long as they don't charge an international fee - you're better off. I traded $1900 into Euros and Francs and essentially lost like $200 bucks just in the exchange. read more
