Generally these guys have done the job. However I recently spent $300 for a pair of replacement lenses for a pair of glasses purchased here a year earlier. I asked for a new matching case as last year's case has a little wear. The answer was no, but they'll sell me a different, not-matching case for $6, even though I could see several dozen matching cases in a drawer. The associate I spoke to seemed unfriendly and didn't know where supplies are stored. read more

I have been coming here for many years for my eye exams and contacts. We lived nearby and the doctors and staff are always very friendly. But today, they went above and beyond. I was leaving town and had ordered contacts that had not arrived yet. I stopped in to see if I can get an extra pair in case something happened when I was out of town. They were wonderful and gave me extra pairs (no charge) until my new ones arrived and also helped me fix a pair of my sunglasses (that were not from there). I had a great experience here! I always dread getting eye exams because they give me headaches and sometimes places aren't straight with you about how much things cost. This was not the case here at all. Everyone was really nice and honest, and the doctor was thorough and asked a lot of questions to make sure the prescription was correct. Once again our experience at Custom Eyes was wonderful. From the minute you step through the door, throughout the entire appointment, to check-out and follow up, everything is handled efficiently and diligently. The customer service is top notch! I would give this location 3.5 stars if possible. I originally went because I lost my glasses. Saw Dr Mike, he was quick and friendly. Didn't feel as thorough as other eye exams I've had in the past, but ok. Was helped by two ladies at the front desk - both friendly, but I did feel a bit rushed into picking out frames. Went back to retrieve my glasses, and the prescription was all wrong. I mean, wrong. I put them on and simultaneously felt nauseated and like I could only see far into the distance. I mentioned this a couple of times, I could barely put them on, and the guy at the desk (strawberry blonde/reddish hair, facial hair) told me to try them for a couple of days and come back. I tried, but again, could barely have them on my face for ~2 seconds before removing them. Brought them back. Saw Dr Casey, who mentioned that the nauseated feeling meant there was too much astigmatism in the prescription, and the fact that I could only see far away meant there was too much near sighted correction. He fixed the prescription. Came back again to pick them up (this is visit #3). Same dude at the counter. I tried them on. No offer to help adjust (or even look at them on my face). I mentioned they were a little tight. He fixed the one side without checking the other - so I put them on when I got into my car and noticed the other side was very tight. I could also tell this by simply unfolding them. So, my question is if he didn't know how to tell they were too tight, and that I had the wrong prescription, what is the training for the front desk? Overall, not a terrible experience by any means....but it felt like they were missing the simple details I've come to expect from other eye doctors. read more

I've seriously been looking for new glasses for about five years. I have a petite face and a really strong prescription, plus I basically hate all frames, so it's been a long and painful road and I've been stuck with the same crappy pair of specs for ages. I wandered into Custom Eyes on a whim and within ten minutes found frames that I loved. The staff were so kind and helpful, and my new glasses were ready the very next day. They were a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for, and i don't believe in cutting costs with something you wear on your face all the time. I got an appointment here for the same day and the doctor was very thorough with me. He discussed with me the fact that my prescription was slightly higher than my old one, but that he didn't want to increase it when he didn't feel I needed it. The receptionist also notified me of a rebate I could get on contacts if I purchased a certain amount of them, so that saved me money in the long run. read more

Custom Eyes is not the store they used to be, which is disappointing. As evident by my previous years, I have been coming here for years. They no longer stock performance sunglasses like Oakley or Tag. The person who helped me (Joe) kept saying I'd look great in "sporty" sunglasses. He wasn't listening to what I needed. I need sunglasses that would keep the sun out of my eyes and protect my eyes when I bike 100 miles - he was trying to sell me a pair that was clearly not intended for that. For $500 - I expect glasses that will do everything I need. And for $500 I expect staff to listen to their customers. This isn't the store it used to be. read more

Oh my GAWD. Ladies, ladies, LADIES, listen up. Do everything that your mom told you NOT to do as a child because "you'll go blind!" Read in the dark. Sit 2 inches from the TV. Play your video games 28 hours a day. Stare at a monitor and perform eye straining exercises. Heck, cross your eyes for all I care. I'm telling you, you won't regret it. Dr. Grant C is just about the most beautiful specimen I have ever laid eyes on. My goodness! All jokes aside, I had a pretty typical visit to the optometrist. There was ample paid street parking (Friday morning). You can park on the side streets (permit required 6p - 6a). I was in and out fairly quickly. Let me start off and tell you that I don't have vision insurance. My contacts are about three years old and lately, I haven't been seeing clearly with them and they were also very uncomfortable. I called many optometrist offices to see how much they charge for a contact lens exam. Originally I wanted to go to Wal-mart in Niles, as I had a very, very positive experience there, but they raised their prices to over $100 dollars. It's also inconvenient to get to by CTA. I chose Custom Eyes because of the reviews and the cost of the exam. Since prices may vary, I will say that they are extremely reasonable. There was an optometrist office that would charge an extra $30 (or $50?) for a follow-up appointment. Yes, so if your contacts didn't fit you the first time, they charge you for coming back. Yeah, I think not. Another place in the Loop wanted to charge upwards of $300 for an exam. Yikes! For that price, contacts should be included! Scheduling an appointment was a breeze. The girl who took my appointment, Chantel, was such a sweetie! Their hours are very convenient for those who work 9-5. I was able to get an appointment around 5:30pm within two days of calling them. I actually could've been seen sooner, but I didn't have time. Anyway, Dr. Sculley was great. He is a "bro-tometrist". I say this endearingly! He's very chill, patient, informative, and not overly enthusiastic (i.e. "HOW are YOU DOING today?? Oh yeah, that's WONDERFUL to HEAR!!") but still nice. I wouldn't be surprised if he was obsessed with sports. Anyway, I was given a comprehensive exam despite the price I paid. Dr. Sculley took his time to figure out my prescription. He said that my old contacts were too strong. Well, that would explain the blurriness. I had Acuvue Oasys for Astigmatism, and he suggested CooperVision Biofinity because they tend to fit better. I tried on a sample (it wasn't in my prescription, but close) and they were so comfortable that I couldn't feel them on my eyes. It felt like my eyes were naturally 20/20. It was an odd sensation, or lack thereof. He didn't have the sample in my prescription, but he ordered them after my appointment. They arrived two days later and so far, so good. I HIGHLY recommend Custom Eyes. They're convenient, friendly, non-judgmental, and accommodating. Also, they are very reasonable for people with no vision insurance. My reason for visiting Custom Eyes was fairly straightforward; to get my annual eye exam and then take my prescription to somewhere less expensive. I should have been suspicious right away when the store dog greeted me. Normally, I find store dogs a charming touch, but having dog hair in a place where medical instruments are kept?! Huh?! Next, I was further taken aback by the ophthalmologist. Maintaining the appearance of a twentysomething college student, I assumed that he was a patient. Nope, the guy with the sloppy cargo pants and polo (not even a white jacket, mind you) was the doctor who would be conducting a medical exam on me. C'mon...is dressing professionally too much to ask? Despite this suspect situation, the exam went well enough. Unfortunately, and no doubt a result of my clear communication that I would not be purchasing glasses there, my prescription was not given to me at the end of the exam. When I returned a few days later to pick up my prescription, I asked to have my pupillary distance measured (required to better align my prescription to the glasses I was ordering online). I was told that no, "[they] don't do that if [I'm] not buying glasses [there]." Even if this isn't covered by the same insurance that covered the eye exam (which I'm almost sure it was), is it really necessary to be this rude? I mean, the store DID make money from my insurance in the first place. Now I'll have to go to an entirely different doctor to have my pupillary distance measured. What a pain. It was time for a new pair of glasses.... a big sigh from a confirmed contact lenses-only wearer. But after spending the last few years in close and constant contact with a laptop screen, I decided that my eyes deserve a break every now and then. Don't get me wrong, my pair of Kate Spade specs from 5 years ago are still relevant, cute and fit my face well. But, the prescription has slightly worsened and I just wanted something more... modern. I checked out Custom Eyes website to see what brands of frames they carried and started researching styles. Didn't take me long to narrow it down to styles from Tom Ford, Chanel and Oliver Peoples. Once in the office, an associate helped me choose between the Chanel pair and the Oliver Peoples (slightly less expensive). According to her, the OP's in question are better quality. Easy decision! Only two days later, my new Oliver Peoples Wacks in Blue Havana (a subtle grayish-blackish-blue depending on the light) came in and I couldn't be happier... also, Dr. Sculley weighed in on another important decision (Lasik: To do or not to do) and provided me with an honest analysis based on my current profile and the future of my eyes. My script isn't terrible and I'm nearsighted... I'm staying where I am, Lasik-free! Thanks Custom Eyes, for another fantastic experience. read more

I've finally found a medical professional I really like. This office is super laid back, and my eye exam was super easy. I've been having problems with my contacts, and the Doctor was great about giving me options and alternatives to my current contacts and solutions. He even consulted me about Lasik surgery. They have a good selection of reasonably priced specs, also. Aside from the ease and quickness of the visit, other pluses included the doctor's two wonderful dogs who snored away while I was getting my exam and the Yeah Yeah Yeah's playing in the background. What can I say, I'm a sucker for bulldogs! I walk past the Custom Eyes on Southport during my weekly exercise jaunts. I happened to notice the bully (Rico) sitting contently in the doorway. Sort of a host to all the clients and pedestrians walking by. I realized I hadn't had my eyes checked since high school, so what better time than now. I logged onto my VSP insurance site and Custom Eyes was on my list of providers. I called the next day, and got an appointment. A very friendly receptionist called to confirm my appointment the next afternoon. After filling out the paperwork, Dr. Sculley, Rico, and I headed to an exam room. Dr. Sculley was very thorough, friendly, and professional. He did all the tests, and confirmed that I had almost perfect 20/20 vision. He jokingly said "I'm not even going to try and sell you glasses because you don't need them". This was the best thing anyone could say to me. I was fully prepared to fork over $$$, instead I walked out only having to pay $20 (my insurance co-pay). Great boutique shop with friendly neighborhood feel. After weeks of wearing the same pair of daily contact lenses (yikes, I know) and putting "get eye exam" dead last on my to-do list, I finally scheduled an appointment for an eye exam at Custom Eyes today. The ladies who booked my appointment over the phone were accommodating and cheerful, and I was able to pick a time that fit my schedule. They even walked me through my super confusing new vision insurance. Even though I arrived a few minutes late (arrrgh, Cubs traffic!) I was seen right away. My appointment took the perfect amount of time, I didn't feel rushed, had all my questions answered by the super nice Freddie Prinze Jr lookalike Dr. and walked away with time to spare for a quick Jeni's ice cream stop across the street (bonus!!! location is ideal with street parking easy to find). After a great recommendation from a friend, I stopped by Custom Eyes for expert frame consultation. You would think, it's all the same, no matter where you go, you'll see the same frames and have a similar experience. I visited a number of shops, looking for the right frames for my face, I was convinced that I wanted rectangle lenses with a wire frame only on the top. Perfect, right? It was like they weren't even there. But it was only until we played the game, let's pretend I don't know what I want, show me what you'd recommend, did I purchase frames. I tried frames that I wouldn't normally pull off the wall and guess what? I loved them. They asked me a number of questions on what I liked about lenses what, and each time, the choices came closer to feeling right. It's been less than a week and they're ready for pick up! I used to go to Pearle for my eye exams and eye wear but my insurance changed and they didn't accept my new insurance. This was the closest eye doctor to my apartment that accepted my insurance so I decided to go here. The eye exam went well and the doctor was very professional and friendly. My issue came when I went to look at glasses. There were no prices on the glasses. I had to ask the salesperson for prices on every single pair. The first few pairs I looked at were $350 - $400 for just the frames! I explained I was looking for something more economical. I ended up paying $185 for the glasses and exam of which $10 was the exam. $175 for glasses with insurance seems a bit high to me and I only got one option on the lenses (light weight) when I also wanted the anti-glare but that would have pushed the price to well over $200. Everyone was very nice and professional and I would return for an exam but I would definitely take my prescription elsewhere to get filled. read more

I was honestly SO impressed with my experience at Custom Eyes. My appointment was scheduled for 11:30-walked in around 11:20 and was seen around 5 minutes later. Awesome. Casey was super nice, and really quick about everything with the exam. He talked to me about my options with contact lenses, and was really patient with my questions. I was able to get samples of my new contact lenses too, which is awesome. Going to the eye doctor is just as fun as going to the dentist. You dread going but once you run out of contact lenses, you have to make an appointment. I found Custom Eyes on Yelp of course and I noticed they take eye insurance! The place I was going before did not take any insurance so I needed to take advantage what my insurance company provides. I stopped in 10 minutes early and I was out in 8 minutes! It was amazing how fast Dr. Casey was with the exam. He is a very nice guy and he answered all of my questions. I will not dread getting my annual eye exam now that I found Custom Eyes. Prices are very reasonable, friendly service and they have a dog hanging out in the office.
