I'm not a purist - mostly I'm just looking for a standard haircut at a reasonable price. I found what I was looking for when I visited the Old Town North Cut and Shave Barbershop. This shop is one of three Cut and Shave locations and is in that part of Old Town that features a great Sheraton Suites hotel, Trader Joe's, Hank's Oyster Bar, and Harris Teater. (The other Alexandria shops are at the Braddock Road Metro station and on Eisenhower Avenue). For my first visit I had an appointment, but during the time I was waiting I saw walk-in customers, so I think both walk-ins and appointments are accommodated. Note that there's a check-in tablet near the cash register, and it's important to sign in upon arrival. I think that way walk-ins and reservation customers all can be accommodated. My barber, Queen, did a great job of listening to my concerns, and getting feedback while she worked. Queen clearly knew what she was doing, and did a fine job cutting my hair. This was a Men's Scissors Cut ($35 plus tip), and Queen matched the style I was looking for. For me, it takes a while to trust a barber. As this was my first visit, there's no final judgment here, just an endorsement based on a good initial impression. The plus here is if I do get to where I can fully trust Queen, I'll be able to get my beard trimmed as well as my hair cut. The shop in fact has a wide range of services, better than most shops that I've been to. Thus far, in the 14 years I've lived in Old Town, I have yet to find a barber who can trim my beard, so it would be great if that could happen at Cut and Shave.

In all that time I've looked to a number of barbers but hadn't really found one that worked well for me. Two months ago I was exploring Lee Street, just east of King Street, and discovered the Old Town Barber Shop. It's tucked in between Jack's Place (for breakfast and lunch) and Diya Indian Cuisine - and about three blocks from the Torpedo Factory. The free Alexandria DASH circulator bus service stops about a block from the shop, so it's easy to get to from either King Street or Braddock Road Metro Stations I was in the area visiting the new pub, the Commodore, which opened earlier this year next to the barbershop. When I saw there was no waiting at the barbershop and knowing I was due for a haircut, I took a chance on Old Town Barber Shop - and it turned out very well. The shop was clean, well-lit, and I met two barbers, Annie and Helen. Annie did an excellent job listening to my concerns. She made sure she knew what kind of cut I was looking for and then set about her work. She had no trouble achieving the results I was looking for, and I thanked her, paying $30 plus a $5 tip, a price that I've found to be well within reason for the area. The truth about a haircut shows up not as you walk out of the shop but how the hair looks a week later. Annie's work definitely passed that test, and for the next four weeks my hair looked like I wanted it to look. When I returned the following month, Annie once again met and exceeded my expectations.

I called All American Barber Shop and spoke to a man who was so pleasant and welcoming; he said my name is Booker T, "come on in, I'll be waiting for you! " His voice reminded me of the old town barbers that served their community for decades and sure enough as soon as I walked in the door I could see and feel the love of an old Sokol barber who served the community in this shop. I loved seeing Young and old people walking by, they would pop in and give Booker T a "fist bump," handshake or a wave. Photos of happy customers adorned the walls along with citations from the mayor congratulating All American & Mr Booker T for the 50 plus years of service to the community. The ship is clean, and we'll maintain. Not only did my son get a nice hair cut, but we got a great history lesson and a new friend.
