On my most recent visit, I was disappointed to learn the price went up. My usual stylist is always MIA, and I settled for another. While the cut and style was OK, I wasn't as thrilled about it as my previous experiences. Price including tax and 20% tip was well over $50 for a wash and cut. My hair looks a little bit better than the first couple days, so I am revising my review. I don't know how this place got some many good reviews. I decided to get a haircut from there after reading all the good reviews, even though the price is higher than most of the hair salons on 8th ave. What a mistake! Here is why: 1. I had a digital perm previously. Therefore, every salon I've been to would try to cut it with some layers, so the curls could look a bit better. Not this place, my hair looks flat and thick as hell right now!! 2. The lady who cut my hair didn't seem to have the knowledge of how to handle permed hair. She pulled my hair straight when she blow dried it, I had to tell her my hair had digital perm before, people don't usually dry it like that. She's like, I know I know. I've been to this salon a few times and agree with several other reviewers here. I've had hair cuts with both May and Kim. My first appt. was a walk-in with May. She is good with very basic, no frills cuts and loves to use a flat iron even though I was happy with the blow out. If you're wanting only a basic cut and don't mind a flat iron, May would be "ok". I've had 2 appts. with Kim. I was really happy with my first cut with Kim but not the 2nd time around. The 2nd time, we both agreed how much we liked the length/style of his previous cut and all I wanted was to have the ends trimmed. Instead of trimming the ends, he totally changed the hair style which was never discussed. He cut off 2 - 2 1/2" of hair (far from being a trim). Since he had already started cutting inches off the length when I noticed, it was too late to say anything. I was shocked and saddened at how much hair was on the floor. When I said something to him about it, he just kind of laughed it off -- not very professional. It's only been a month since my 2nd cut, and it's growing out terribly and just goes flat -- no shape/style to it. It's nothing like the first cut with Kim. I also was charged different amounts for my hair being trimmed each time. The 2nd time, he gave me the wrong change (less than what I should have received, which I didn't catch until I had left the salon). Truly disappointed with my last experience here. read more

Decided to get a haircut while in town and I found this place on yelp and decided to give it a try. They are "open" at 10am. I called many times and couldn't get ahold of anyone until 10:40am so just so you know 10am isn't their real opening time. I schedule an appt to get my hair cut by Kim... BEST FREAKING CUT I've ever gotten. He took the time to sit down with me and showed me different styles. People who provided one star reviews basically had the same experience as me, it doesn't seem like much has changed since I got my haircut from here. I came to this place a while ago when they had only a few reviews. The lady whom I got a haircut from tried desperately to blow dry my hair after doing a very poor job of cutting layers. It was like looking at a before shot of America's extreme makeover. I told her I don't want heat applied to my hair, but after a few minutes in, she took an iron out on to my hair while nodding repeatedly as if I gave her the OK, before I told her again, I don't want heat applied to my hair. -_- read more

I live in the nabe and my roomie gets his hair cut here regularly by Kim. I was jonesin' for a haircut since I had just gotten my first keratin treatment but I really didn't want to go into the city nor drop $75+. 8th Ave is riddled with salons so picking one was quite a task. Upon consulting Yelp, I decided to spring for a cut with Nic. I showed up bright and early on a Saturday morning and did the damn thing. The salon is clean and modern with simplistic decor. When I first walked in there was some woman who didn't bother to greet me nor say anything sitting in the receptionist chair. Turns out she was a friend of the stylist and didn't work there. However, another stylist greeted me immediately after and directed me to Nic. (For those of you wondering, language is not a barrier here but I believe most of the staff is Chinese.) I was washed and consulted before Nic went in with the scissors. I'm usually very trusting of stylists, sometimes to my own peril, and Nic gave me a fantastic haircut. He cut my hair dry, which I've never had done before, but he also educated me that for someone who was just getting a trim this was the best method. Best of all, the cut was only $22! The wait wasn't too long (pretty empty). I got the female hairstylist. Wash was okay, cut started out well. All i wanted was side swept bangs... That is not what i got. She cut too long then attempting to fix it she cut it too short. Realizing it, she played with my bangs a millions times, comb, straight, brush, moving it, etc.. to convince me it was good. Umm... I didn't even make it to the hair cut part of getting a haircut. I called earlier in the week asking their weekend hours as I was planning out my haircut for quite a while. I settled on supercuts because of their great reviews so I made a trip out to the location. It was more then far as it took almost an hour and a half to travel here but I made it... to a gate that was half way closed. I looked inside and there were only 2 people working. That's fine. Sometimes things happen that require shutting down the store for a while. Here's what pissed me off. I tried getting the workers attention. I wasn't knocking. I wasn't kicking or screaming. I smiled and made eye contact. I mouthed to them outside their half way gate asking if, "hey you closed?" The workers just ignored me. I waited outside in this ridiculous summer heat for 20-30 min. No acknowledgement that there was a paying customer outside. If this review seems rushed its because I've never been so mad or compelled to say anything so negative about a place. Since this was my first visit I showed my stylist, Kim, a photo of what I wanted. 40 minutes later, I had the exact hairstyle I wanted. He took his time and paid close attention to detail. This is the best hair salon I've been to in Brooklyn! My hair stylist is very meticulous and truly aims for exactly what you have in mind. Unlike the other hair salons, they take their time and try to reach all your expectations. What's best about them is that they LISTEN to what you what and also offer some suggestions. This review is for JOE. He is by far the best customer service I've ever had in ANY field and without a doubt the best hair stylist I've ever had (and I used to cut my hair at high end places like Bumble and Bumble). I came in (virgin chinese hair) to a grey ombre color and from the very beginning he asked very thoughtful questions, like if this color would be ok for work because he seemed to anticipate before I did what a big change it was that I was asking for. Long story short, the process took 11 hours - i slightly changed my mind halfway through which added to additional time and also, Joe is meticulous and so detailed oriented throughout the whole process, even giving me a blowout even though it was almost midnight on a Tuesday. Joe does not rush the process (so if you're looking for something quick, might be better to see someone else) and it's actually pretty amazing to watch him work - like a quiet, mad scientist! It was all the little things that made the 11 hours pass without any problems - like i bought my laptop to work and he gave me access to the wifi and created a standing desk for me to work on since I was sore from sitting so long! He was constantly bringing me new magazines to read and asking if I was thirsty or if I wanted to stretch my legs. My hair was a tough case and he got as close as possible to what I was asking for (since it turns out what I was asking for wasn't really possible). He never once charged me extra (even though he should have) and when I came back in to fix the color (I wanted to go silver grey as opposed to the dark grey I originally asked for), he didn't charge and I had to force him to accept a tip (which he completely and absolutely deserved). I seriously can't speak highly enough of Joe. He's humble, polite, and EXTREMELY TALENTED. Not to mention one of the nicest people I've ever had the pleasure to meet. I've been going to cutting crew for a few years. My cousins, friends and aunt enjoys coming here as well. I would highly recommend Kim or Nic because they are both outstanding! When I go get a haircut, it would usually take a little more than an hour. Kim does give me great suggestions when I plan on dying my hair and would take his time to make sure that my hair comes out the way I want it to. Prior to Nic, I was always hopping from barber to barber depending on convenience and never had a consistent cut. At our first visit, Nick was able to style my hair as desired. From then on, he maintains it monthly and the quality is on par every time. Nic is very meticulous with great attention to detail. As a guy, i was used to cuts taking 20 minutes or less but with Nic it typically takes 45+ minutes or more as he is focused on making you happy and not rushing you out of the door. I went there for the first time today and got a cut and color (by Kim). I am really happy with both and would recommend him/Cutting Crew. Here's why: 1. Super convenient I was able to make a same-day appointment. 2. Kim was cool. He was a really nice guy and easy to talk to. This isn't a priority for me with stylists but it's a very nice--and notable--bonus quality since (with the coloring especially) you spend a good chunk of time together and in close proximity. He spent a lot of time on my hair and paid nonstop attention to what he was doing. Despite my appointment being several hours long, I never once felt rushed. 3. I liked his direction and trusted his professional opinion. After I told him the gist of what I wanted--for color: go dark brunette (from hombre blonde)/for cut: keep the length, add bangs--Kim went with it and added specifically what he would do (i.e. long bangs to side). 4. No surprises with the execution. Happy with results. He did not veer from his plans and he kept me in the loop along the way. I loved the color immediately and as it dried I loved it more. It's natural but not boring. 5. Crazy $ value. I realized toward the end of my appointment that I had never asked for rates and was a bit nervous imagining how much it could potentially be. When I heard the total, I couldn't help but clarify..."for both cut AND color?" What I paid for both services at Cutting Crew would barely cover the cost of the color alone at my old salon (Dvir in Boerum Hill...love that place too, but it's double the cost).
