I had my hair cut by Kim, the sweetest lady, who even though there was a language barrier, constantly checked in with me on lengths throughout the cut. I had a really disappointing experience. They recommended a hush cut, which I agreed to, but they didn't explain that it involved thinning shears. My hair is already fine, and after this haircut, it feels much thinner and less full than before. During the haircut, I asked them to slow down and not thin it out as much, but they continued anyway. I left feeling upset and unhappy with the result. I ultimately had to go to another salon to fix my hair, which was an additional expense and stress I didn't need. I wish there had been clearer communication about what the hush cut entailed and that my concerns had been respected during the appointment. That said, I've had my hair cut twice before at this location with the same person without any issues, so maybe they were having an off day. read more

What I got: Single process dye to color annoying grey stands (not a root job) Very professional, the hair stylist brought out color books and explained what my dark brown hair will look like afterwards if I picked color A vs B. Let me tell you, this is not something that a box color would be able to achieve at home folks. Despite it being a single process the hair stylist worked on the upper portions of my hair with dye that made it slightly more red than the lower portions. Then blended it with a different process on the bottom. The results looked natural and the coloring is more vivid and red than my natural coloring (what I wanted in the beginning). Loved it! I'll definitely go back when I need a touch up. They didn't have time for a blow out (they told me this when I scheduled). But the stylist was nice enough to pay enough attention to dry my hair in a way that complimented my hair. Cost was $150 without tip. For the past few years, I went to salons in Chinatown for all of my hair needs, but after a terrible experience, I decided it was time to invest a little more money and find a higher quality salon. After doing some research, I found Bao Hair Salon and have been a regular for over one year now. While Bao Hair Salon is a bit expensive, (my haircuts cost $80), the price is certainly worth it. I cannot rave enough about my stylist, Kelly. Not only is she a master at what she does (skilled and precise), she's also efficient and fast! I've gotten two Japanese hair straightening treatments here. While at other salons, they usually take 4.5 to 6 hours, the Bao team is efficient and finishes in ~3-3.5 hours. Although they are efficient, you will still feel pampered and relaxed (love the hair wash and head massage!). Appointments always start on time and the entire team is friendly, sincere, accommodating, and organized. The salon is small but laid out well with a stylish modern decor; you will feel very comfortable. Everything about the Bao Hair Salon is top notch. The team is simply the best! I was very overdue for a haircut, and the weight of my hair had been getting unbearable. I made an appointment, but due to a time zone mixup on my calendar I accidentally missed it. Bao Salon was very kind and understanding, and allowed me to reschedule for the next day. When I showed up to the salon, they only allowed 2 customers at a time. I think there were 2 employees working, maybe 3? All of them were wearing face masks. Keep in mind that if you don't want them to use heat, or if you want them to use heat protectant, you need to tell them proactively. This is because they are considerate of their clients' needs and potential sensitivities to products so they prefer clients to initiate those requests. They did a good job on my hair, but I think I should have been clearer that I don't use heat on my hair at all and wear it naturally wavy/curly and didn't want to lose any volume (that's on me for not telling them). The stylist was friendly and we had a nice chat during my cut. It felt so nice to connect with another person again after quarantine. I'm quite happy with how the cut turned out! Went to BAO hair salon because I'm new to Brooklyn and it seemed to be in a nice area and thought it would be good. Big mistake ! After explaining what I wanted the woman said she knew how to do it. I was in her chair for about five minutes. For years I've watched my hair being cut and she did nothing even close to the proper way. When I explained it to her she said that that's how she did it. She had no idea what I was talking about and just did whatever she wanted to my hair. Worst hair cut in my entire life. I called for an appointment to have it corrected and now have to wait an entire week for her to attempt to do it correctly. OMG I'll have to walk around like this for a week. My favorite go-to place for a haircut! The first time I came to Bao was on a whim. They took me in and seated me right away. I had the most wonderful head massage with my hair wash. I wanted to cry, she ask if I was tired after the cut, no Bonnie I am irate not tired. Really bad experience, I could've gotten this buzz cut at any barber shop for 10 bucks. So very sad, honestly. Another customer just walked out without getting a cut while I was there. I wanted to be able to split my hair both ways - I asked for this 3 times and she gave me a buzz cut. I started going here before the pandemic just to have haircuts, during COVID I felt terrible for small businesses and as soon as I could go there I went because I wanted to keep supporting them. I decided to trust her with my hair to have some highlights done and they came out "ok" , second time I went I came out with four different colors that I had to color my hair and now my hair is black! After all this mess and damaged hair I still wanted to go back just for haircuts and forget about what happened but now they don't pick up my calls! Their prices are higher than Bergdorf Goodman salon , that day I paid $300 for highlights, $60 for "blow dry" plus $80 tip! You do the math. After reading all the glowing reviews on Yelp I was excited to give Bao a try when I needed a cut in a pinch and wasn't able to get my usual stylist. I did not ask for Kelly who is referenced in almost every review and that was my first mistake. I met the stylist, showed her a picture of what I wanted which was just a cleanup of the style I already had. Throughout the haircut the communication was bad and although I felt like the cut wasn't totally even, I thought it might just be the styling and waited to pass judgment until after I washed on my own. 36 hours later I realized my hair was visibly uneven in length from one side to the other and the layering was also drastically different. I went in and showed her where the unevenness was and the additional layers needed to be cut to blend it. After insisting three times that she needed to wash my hair before adjusting it I finally caved and this is where things went totally out of control. Jessica began to recut my entire hairstyle and when I protested she claimed it was unbalanced. I began to question every move she was making and always it was unbalanced or fixing the weight of my hair. At one point she said she needed to create a side bang to relieve the weight of the front and proceeded to cut several inches off my hair and give me a bang so short that I immediately told her to stop. When I told her I didn't like the bang she said that she wasn't finished and then cut even MORE of a choppy and dated side bang on to my face. Once it started to dry I realized I had lost at LEAST two additional inches in length from when I walked in 45 minutes prior and was told 'the length and the bangs were good for my face.' No no no. After drying I pointed out that the blending that I came in to fix was STILL too heavy and looked basically untouched. Finally that was addressed and when I left the salon I was offered a free haircut from Kelly the next time I came by. (She was not present for the second cut.). There will not be a next time when your stylists can't communicate and other employees just sit and watch a situation devolve into a truly terrible haircut. I went in with a long angled bob that needed trimming, left with an uneven angled bob the first time and ended up with a dated mom helmet bob that can only be fixed by three months pinned up into a tiny tiny bun. Technically, it's a better executed haircut than the one she gave me two days prior but I didn't want a second haircut, only some touchup and nothing I said along the way was listened to. Stay away from the inexperienced uncommunicative newbies at this salon. read more

I have the stereotypical "thick course Asian hair" and it was getting long and extremely heavy. I decided to chop off 4 or 5 inches by myself, shoulder length-ish, but it came out uneven, the weight stayed and wasn't layered/styled. I went in today and wow I feel so much better! I walked out feeling more confident and with a spring in my steps. My stylist (I wish I knew her name) gave me long layers and added texture, plus fixed my bangs. I've never really had full bangs before since I've been scared to (I have chubby cheeks) but they turned out great! I have been going for Kelly for more than 5 years now. I have done colors, perms , haircuts and Keratin treatments, mostly everything with her and results were beyond great. She is the perfectionist. She will take her own time until she gets satisfied, of course I am always happy even before she finished it. She always looking for what will look the best on me even I brought the pictures I want but she finds the better look then the pictures because she combines and utilizes more from the pictures. Bad experience. The blow dry is 50$ and the hair stylist seemed really in hurry to conclude. When she finished, I was looking to myself into the mirror as I was not 100% convinced of the result. It looked much more voluminous that I had requested. At the same time, I was kind and respectful in saying I liked the style, just needed a bit of adjustments. The girl became really nervous and extremely upset with me and she did not listen at all to my feedback and made me feel extremely uncomfortable ... that is not how you expect to feel in a beauty salon after spending 50$ for a blow dry. It is a pity because the space is cute, the quality of the products good and the little massage after washing was really nice. There are not enough words to express how great Bao is! It only took one appointment (and a barrage of compliments) to know this would be my salon moving forward. I have a single process color every 4 weeks, so trusting the stylist and enjoying the whole experience of the salon is very important to me. Kelly is fantastic , and I trust her completely with my cut and color. Ronnie is also an absolute pleasure, and keeps the salon running smoothly and efficiently. To be honest, the shampoo at Bao is often the most relaxing part of my month. It is beyond obvious their team loves what they do and values their customers! They're kind, sincere and enjoyable to be around. At this point, I have been a loyal customer for over three years, and after seeing my consistently great cuts/color, some of my closest friends and even a few neighbors are Bao loyalists as well. They share the same sentiments about the staff and have also received consistently great cuts. The beginning of the pandemic was tough, but I've been going back regularly since they were allowed to reopen in Phase 2. I had no doubt in my mind that they would be taking all the proper COVID precautions, and they've 100% delivered on that expectation.
