This review is for arrivals to St. Thomas, disembarking the plane, and navigating the airport. Most of the reviews here describe the departure process (which is generally rated pretty low). Enjoy your travels to the U.S. Virgin Islands! I've been traveling to St. Thomas for quite sometime now and the arrival process overall has generally been very efficient. As of April 2022, please have your mask on when disembarking plane. Remember that the USVI is a territory and has implemented rules that may be different from the states. You will walk down the stairs and primarily be outside, dress appropriately as you'll be outside in 80-85 degree weather. Prior to travel (at least 5-days out), the USVI Department of Tourism requires all travelers to the Territory to use the "USVI Travel Screening Portal" to submit the required COVID-19 vaccine or test results prior to traveling to the Territory. When you are cleared to travel to the USVI, you will receive an email with a green QR Code. You will need to print the QR Code ahead of time and carry it on you, or you will need to have it accessible on your phone for scanning after disembarking the plane. The military reservists will need your photo ID and the QC Code to scan. Head past the nice dancers greeting you towards the baggage claim, this is a great opportunity for you to get a free shot of Cruzan Rum (produced in St. Croix, VI). Once in the baggage claim area, you will receive your luggage relatively quickly compared to the larger airports in the U.S. There's only 2 baggage claim conveyor belts, I generally just head to the area and eventually your luggage will be there. For transportation: If you need car rental the options, then are Avis, Budget, and Hertz, but I try to support local family businesses by scheduling a rental ahead of time. There is also a taxi stand with clear taxi rates posted on a blue and red. I would recommend taking a picture of it. read more

There is literally no information about this airport online. Yelp to the rescue! Our flight was delayed 6 hours AFTER we got here for the "required" 3 hour window prior to departure. Not blaming the airport for that. But what would have been really nice is if the airline communicated this information to airport employees as it was happening, and then if the airport employees communicated this information to passengers that ALL restaurants and shops (limited as it was) close at 5 PM, 5 hours until our new departure time. We found out accidentally as we wandered around about an hour after we got here and discovered we had 20 minutes to grab all of the food we would need for the next 5 hours. Props to the Hibiscus Cafe for staying open to serve us past their quitting time, but even then they stopped cooking food and basically only offered chicken tenders and fries. The kitchen staff all walked out as we were still standing in line. The manager worked with the cashier to get all of our airline food vouchers processed but the line took forever and our food was cold before we got out of line. There are not even any gate agents for any airlines here. We would have left and come back, but we had already bought a big bottle from duty free that we couldn't take through security. Departures Info. What they have here--there is a coffee stand that serves coffee and snacks but it closes at 4:30 PM so we missed that window once we saw them pull down the shades covering the shopS There is a duty free shop with a bar--it only has alcohol, but it also closes at 5 PM. There is a small gift shop/sundries shop but it also closes at 5 PM. And there is the Hibiscus Cafe which closes at 5 PM. That's it, folks. The waiting area for all gates is about the size of the end of one of Dulles' terminals (read: not that big for 8 gates). UPDATE: The manager of Hibiscus opened up one of their small stands so all of us passengers would not be completely stranded for hours! As some others have suggested. Bring your own food to the airport if possible, and for sure for a late flight after everything closes. Arrivals info. You de-plane outside so be prepared to go down a flight of steps to get off your plane. The only shop in the tiny baggage claim is a duty free shop selling alcohol. No sundries shop that we saw. Ground transportation. You can't miss the rental car company desks at baggage claim. Taxis can be found at the taxi stand outside and be prepared to share a passenger van with strangers. Expect to spend about $25 per person cash (plus tip) from the airport to your destination. read more

Worst airport in the universe. On Wed, Dec 29 we had a flight leaving at 5:55pm. We arrived before 3pm - 3 hours before takeoff - and we barely made our flight. There are two lines you have to make through: 1) US Customs and Immigration 2) TSA They all DGAF. Give yourself 3.5+ hours. It's so bad that Delta has a separate US Customs and Immigration line that they pay a lot of money for. I found this out after watching Delta customers go straight from the Delta counter to the front of the line. Pay extra for Delta flights from USVI back to the US - it will save you ~1.5 hours. read more

It's an airport people! Would give it a five but don't want the crazy speech! It's under construction It's old and it's outdated, but it does the job! Has clean restrooms, the hibiscus cafe is good to eat at. Flights take a minute from 3-5pm bad time to get off the island. Kiddo says it should maybe be a 5 because there is a Mountain View and you get to walk outside on the tarmac to board the plane. read more

Concise Review Nice Airport; great chicken tenders ----- Longer Review We visited St. Thomas, USVI, for the first time in 2021, and had a great time. We flew through Atlanta (ATL) to Cyril E. King St. Thomas Airport (STT). Arrivals The airport has one runway, which is quiet much of the day, then busy with inbound flights early afternoon, and then busy with outbound flights later afternoon. There are no jetways, so when you arrive, you descend the mobile staircases, and when you depart you climb the mobile staircases (truly awesome!!). It's nice to be on the tarmac, seeing the planes from the ground level (have your camera ready for some pix (don't dawdle) as you make your way into the terminal. Once inside the terminal it's a short walk to baggage claim, then outside to your van/taxi (we recommend reserving ride in from airport to hotel before you leave - Dohm's Taxi and also Prince - 340-513-7117). or Stay inside for a rental; based on what we heard, there are relatively few rental vehicless, they are pricy. Taxis are all over the island ready to drive you day and night; we recommend just getting taxis/vans. There is a snack bar with a gracious host/bartender; our daughter recommends the under-21 Pina Colada. Departures While the seating area is enclosed, the airline check-ins are not, and the US Customs area is partially enclosed. St. Thomas and the rest of the US Virgin Islands are all part of the United States, so you unfortunately can't / won't get a passport stamp, but you will need to go through TSA, with all your bags... and then you'll hand your checked bags to TSA for scanning... and then proceed to your gate. The snack bar... so nice... there are several flights on all the airlines departing within a short time of one another, so there was a long line for food. They have burgers, chicken tenders, and even some entrees. Most were in line for burgers and tenders. To speed things, the cook in the back was making items and pushing them through the window, and the waitress would call what it was and the next person/people in line would take their turn to say "I want that." If you wanted something else, when it's your turn you tell the waitress what you want and wait a couple minutes and then you have your food. Painful! Old and super small waiting area when departing to get wait at your gate. No A/C and buckets catching water dripping from the ceiling. It's been a year since the hurricane, so no excuses! Only one tiny place to buy sandwiches or salads while you wait at your gate and it is pricey, but the food tasted fresh. Yeah, I know it's kind of rough to review an airport in the Virgin Islands and think of it as a positive but this one was pretty bad. We've been coming down here for the better part of a dozen years now and I always gave them a free pass after the double hurricanes of 2017 but I can no longer do so. They had a golden opportunity to upgrade the facilities here and did not. It's hot, security and Customs are slow, and once you do clear all of that and are waiting for your flight there isn't any good food or beverage options. You've been warned, make sure you grab a bite to eat before you come here. ProTip, make sure you give yourself at least two hours before your flight. read more

This airport looks like the remnant of a Godzilla vs. Mothra fight post hurricanes. Blue tarps cover massive holes in the sides of the building and the roof, the chairs in the waiting area look like Godzilla used them as chew toys, and nothing really works anymore including TSA which is just a hot mess. My recommendation if you are coming in or leaving is to add an hour to the normal three hour "get to the airport early time". The scanners don't work for TSA so the search process is MANUAL for your stuff and you. I bet a lot of you haven't been through that before, we haven't and it was so confusing, so long, and so frustrating, it makes you want to swim to your destination. The restaurant inside is gone, (which isn't a bad thing- they were rancid), so they are trying to sell items off of kiosks that should be dog food for waaayyyyy too much. The duty free shop looks like it was wiped off the face of the planet and the main pillars holding up the structure, are just metal beams wrapped in plastic. The airport is a construction zone, things go boom all around you so it isn't a peaceful wait for your flight. They still are operating a bar here, which you may need to hit up to take the edge off. Keep expectations low, expect people to be rude, don't plan on getting anything here (food, last minute travel items, souvenirs etc.) and you will be ok. The first time that I flew into this airport was in 2007 and through the years every visit is about the same. A lot is expected from this airport but you can not expect the same standards of comfort and ease as you get from airports that are not located on a small island. They do not have the same resources and are ok with that fact. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection screening line was long but moved quickly. The officer asked all of the usual questions. When did you arrive? Where did you stay? Why were you here? Did you make any purchases during your visit? After customs we flew through security and ended up in our waiting area. This area has a restaurant, quick snack kiosk and a very small open air store. The store sold a limited amount of souvenirs, books and snacks. I have never in my life experience such rude people. They TSA employees were not clear when providing direction and were yelling at people the entire time. Keep in mind, this is a small airport. It is not some major international hub. Also, we did come visit in late 2020, so crowded flights were a distant memory. Also, you are walking down (or up on departure) a stairway and across the tarmac when departing, so keep that in mind for what you decide to bring as a carry on. We needed to get screened for Covid before flying out, which we did, and had our info posted to the USVI clearance page in advance. When we arrived, we were screened and out paperwork checked, but it was quick and simple. The baggage area was pretty standard, and coming from the US, there are no custom checks. The on-site car rentals are across the parking lot and up some steps, so if you have a big group or lots of luggage that may not roll well, leave your party at the terminal, get the car, hen swing back around to get your group. Upon departure, the reverse is true, drop them off, return the car, then meet them at the terminal for check in. There is a customs check at departure, so if you are a resident alien (as one of our group is) have your passport and green card. Anyone else, have whatever paperwork you need to prove you are legal in the US. A drivers license with Real ID should be good enough, but I have not jumped through those hoops, so I had my US passport. After the customs check, there is a luggage screen similar (I am guessing) to what you get when leaving Hawaii. The airport lounge is small with not a lot of options, but again, it is a small airport. read more

This Airport has made slow, but some what appreciated improvements. I saw this as someone who was born and raised in STT. The usual deplaning process utilizing the stairs is normal and an immediate introduction to island weather. The baggage claim area being air conditioned makes the wait for your luggage a bit more bearable. As for departure. Always show up early. The checkin process is dreadful if there is a line, and that line then proceeds to Customs/Immigration and then to TSA. Be prepared to carry your all of your bags with you up to the TSA checkpoint(unless you pay a Red Cap to carry them for you). Once in the waiting area, the gates don't really matter as it is one big holding area. Grab a drink relax and await your boarding call. read more

I don't want to give anyone a false sense of confidence, but we had no issues quickly getting through the lines at approx 10:30 am on Friday, July 8. Our flight was departing at 2 pm, so we came straight to the airport after checking out of our condo at 10. We were anxious after reading some of the other comments, but it seems we hit a less busy time/day. Closer to noon the gates became busier, but I'm not sure how quickly the lines were moving after we arrived. Keep in mind that even if you are a US citizen, you are still required to go through customs. We returned the rental car (Budget) to the same lot where we picked it up at the airport & returned the keys to the same desk in the baggage claim area. No issues there, but you do have to use stairs going to/from the rental car parking area. read more

When I arrived I thought Cyril E. King wasn't bad, bags came out quickly and we walked right out to several shuttles available to take everyone where they needed to go. However, departing from there was a whole other story. Employees were no were to be found, the self check in stations were not working and then the power went out at the American Airlines check in. Luckily we arrived early so although we had to wait over 30 minutes for them to get everything back up and running we had no issues with missing our flight. Customs was smooth, but security was another disaster. Once through there is only was food/bar area which was packed, hot and pretty sad. My first time going from Orlando to ATL they had no pilot, canceled the flight leaving everyone stuck at the airport with no means or place to stay for the night. Now I'm in VI and have been told 3 stories by the staff and "customer service reps" Spirt does not care about customers and I will not be flying with them again. This is a small, outdated airport that needs some love. The arrival side is better than the departure side. At the arrival side as soon as you hop off the plane, there is music and people dancing. You wait about 15 minutes for luggage and then you are set. This airport is so small, one plane comes in at a time, and you can very easily find your way around. The bathrooms line will be long, since people are also changing into clothes for the warmer weather. Also, the toilets just don't work, which is so less than ideal. I coordinated my travel to St. John with the Westin, and it was pretty seamless. The departure side was more underdeveloped. There's no restaurant to sit at and only old outdated and uncomfortable chairs. There is no wifi and not much to do, and I had 2.5 to burn before boarding. Also, the food here is expensive. I got a single bag of chips and it cost $3! I also heard other people commenting on the high price of the food and lack of quality. It's a small airport with no jet bridges, only air stairs which makes it difficult if it's raining hard as you are deplaning or boarding. The Worst Airport & MOST SLOW US CUSTOMS & TSA ANYWHERE!!! Ok, so I get this is a small airport and I have been all over the Caribbean to many airports... This is no excuse people! A big problem here is the US Customs people... We lucked out and we had Officer Disney who was actually friendly and polite. Good Job Disney for being a decent human being! We were watching for about 2 hours in line as some of the other not so professional customs agents harassed and were just terribly rude to so many people. We were dreading our turn and why should we? I get there are some people trying to do illegal smuggling but whatever happened to the right to travel freely within your own country? I don't like going through customs, especially when I didn't leave the USA. So if you can make it through the hot, sweaty and sinking jam packed customs section, you get to now wait in the TSA line to do nothing more than drop your bags at the first part. We are TSA pre check passengers so we don't usually have to wait around so long... The staff with TSA here were pretty grumpy too... Too much grumpy doesn't end a vacation how I wold prefer. Once you finally get through all this you get to the crazy terminal where there is nowhere to sit down because there are too many people here and they apparently don't want to invest in making the airport bigger? So you have to dump out all of your water to go thru TSA and then there is nowhere where you can get free water. No water fountains no bottle filling stations nothing. You are forced to buy water from them (cheapest is from island grind for 3 dollars). Other than that it's a clean and effective. It's pretty small but does the job. One of the easiest airports to navigate. The biggest challenge is arriving 90 minutes prior to departure to check baggage for a domestic flight. There are about eight gates, a few retail stores and a restaurant. Boarding and deplaning is done out in the element which is no issue absent a rainy day. ********* If you traveling to St. John --- you will need a taxi or shuttle to Red Hook. The 20 minute ferry will take you to St John and leaves every hour on the hour. read more

Small and slow. We didn't expect much for a small island airport. TSA staff was not very courteous. The major reason for low rating was die to the gift shop. I browsed around not really looking for anything in particular. I randomly reached for a travel neck pillow. When I touched it, roaches started scurrying between the pillows on display. Small, old airport that is currently being remodeled in spots. Flying in: disembark on rolling steps and walk around outside to get to baggage claim. Restrooms and one small area to get a bite to eat and drink, but prepare to pay! Flying out: no real issues other than having to wait outside for Delta agents in order to check bags. Best to get there early to avoid lines and crowds. Inside gate area there are plenty of seats, shops and restaurants if you're hungry or need more souvenirs before you leave. I hope updates include more power outlets and wi-fi to keep up with demand. read more

Very small airport but it's just fine. When we flew in the national guard was checking our Covid entry status requirements. Baggage claim is small just a few baggage claim areas. Everything had signs about where to go to get transpo and the airport is so small it's not hard to figure out. Leaving ST Thomas was easy and customs was quick and easy. I don't remember if there were restaurants, but I don't think so but there was a store for snacks and souvenirs if you forgot any. read more

The arrivals board at this airport is a whiteboard where some nice gentleman takes a marker and makes a check next to the flights that have landed. What I'm trying to say here is that it's not the most modern of facilities. Security is slow (although you don't need the three hours everyone seems to recommend you arrive before departure), shopping is limited, and there's one spot to buy food where they will price gouge you, and your best bet is the chicken fingers that my friend recommended by way of saying, "Prepare to feel TERRIBLE." But there's free rum samples and you're in the Caribbean, so it's kind of all OK. read more

Really cannot leave a negative review for this airport as there was some immense destruction due to the hurricanes and they are in the process of rebuilding. The airport is definitely small, moving your way through security is quick however, the people I've interacted with while going through customs were professional and kind and you definitely felt safe while traveling through this airport, even though it's definitely different than most you've likely been to. Get your snacks before coming here because due to the destruction they only have one small food stand set up and the options are severely limited. All of the gates are in one room, one location, you can see everybody waiting at their gate by standing in the middle of the room. Therefore, there is only one bathroom, minimal outlets to charge your phone and absolutely no wi-fi or cell service at all here. You have to walk outside in order to get to your plane. Didn't have time to get souvenirs for family and friends while in St. Thomas so I was hopeful that the airport would have a gift shop for me to do so. Again, not sure if this is because of the hurricane damage but there was a newspaper like stand where they had 6 or 7 different kinds of t-shirts for purchase that had St. Thomas and St. John embroidered on them. For the quality of the shirts, the price was too high, $35 for a t-shirt wasn't what I had in mind so I passed on the shirts. Hopefully after they are able to rebuild, they'll add a more substantial gift shop. At this newspaper stand they had candy bars, some pens and books for purchase. However, when I say some, I mean some. Literally four of five candy bars on a table, a few packs of gum available. Again, bring snacks in your bag, don't expect to find what you need here. Prepare to sit in chairs right on top of one another, little breathing room, it's a big cluster here, but this airport allowed me to travel safely from one place to another and with the damages they suffered you really cannot give this airport a bad review.
