This is an airport that you get off the plane on the tarmac and walk to the terminal. That is fine, if a bit warm during summer, but during the rainy season I can imagine it is unpleasant. Inside, the terminal is perfectly functional but not much else. We waited a long time for our bags and ours were the very last to be unloaded. I guess someone had to be last but it was stressful because I thought the bags did not make the flight. They advise to arrive 3 hours before your flight, which considering the very small size of the airport seems odd. But for the departure we will comply.

The check-in process felt unnecessarily complicated you have to pre-TSA check your bags 1st, then go through TSA again when getting to your gate. It's just chaotic w/ long lines, long waits,& not enough organization which made the experience pretty stressful. That being said,the airport itself is very nice, clean, & visually appealing. It's actually a pretty airport, just very overwhelming in terms of how busy & unorganized the flow can feel.

Outside on the parking lot is a well regarded outdoor restaurant/food truck/bar but I didn't visit it. The air traffic here is almost 100% island hoppers like Vieques Air Link, Cape Air, etc. (which fly small 10 seat or less twin engine propeller planes) that will take you to Ceiba and San Juan on the big island along with a smaller island called Culebra nearby.

Or walk down the spiral staircase and see artwork made by Vieques children. Feel special walking down that staircase. You should - you just vacationed in Vieques! Bathrooms on both floors. Clean but could use some scented stuff cause they are not AC'ed and sort of smell a bit. Staff are all bilingual. Security present but you don't go through baggage security or anything like that. It's done in San Juan. Oh, lots of free parking in well maintained lot. So, what's there not to warrant 5stars?

It's then you enter into the large waiting area with plenty of seating and air conditioning. Off to one side is a small Duty Free shop and a "Cafe & Bar" where you can purchase EXPENSIVE food. My hot dog was a whopping $11! The food board said it came "with all the trimmings." An employee directed me to a self-serve stand where the "trimmings" included packets of mustard, ketchup and mayonnaise! My small fountain drink in an 8-oz insulated cup cost $5.25. Airport food traditionally is expensive but wow! Thankfully all employees were friendly and efficient.

I went to St Thomas(STT) last year and compared to that, STX is so much better. Another difference I noticed: STT didn't have e filters for water and STX does. Only complaint is there are no benches outside at pickup area. This is imperative post covid, especially when taxis tend to be on "island time". Sat on the curb & battled ants while waiting for my ride. It is $8.50/day to park & the lot closes & locks at 6 or 7pm (also island time).

Part of the delay came from not being told at the check-in counter that I needed to show my boarding pass @ the accommodation station. I was told someone would be w/ me shortly & to sit by the accommodation area, so I waited (but it ended up taking longer than expected). Eventually, I realized what was going on & went up to the accommodation station myself. When I got there, the employee acted as if I was supposed to already know I needed to present my boarding pass, which added to the frustration in the moment. The long waits & lack of clear instructions made things more difficult than it needed to be. However,when I got to the JetBlue gate the employees there were way nicer & helpful. They seemed to have it together. So it's a mixed experience.

I wish I grabbed her name so I could praise her even more. Once we were through security, which took forever (not a Jet Blje issue) the terminal was nice. A big open area with ample seating, shopping and dining areas. My only criticism is that the bathrooms could use a little work but it was a hectic day trying to get everyone out on time before the impending East Coast snow storm.

So for San Juan to Culebra, we paid $129 per ticket and then an unexpected $83 each for baggage, so the real price was $212 each. One way. Ouch. When Cape Air cancelled our late afternoon flight, we should have stuck with our original Plan B to take the ferry from Ceiba, which would have saved us around $300 total for the two of us.

However, once it was our turn things picked up. The agent was polite and didn't grill us. We got our bags and passed through a second checkpoint. Here they ask if you have any alcohol, etc. if you do, you have to pay a fee. In addition, each passenger pays an entrance fee. On our way back, things were quicker. There were a lot less people when we arrived so passing through the security checkpoint was quick. There is not much here. I didn't really pay much attention, it from what I saw there were about 3 gift shops, car rental booth, and 2 places to eat, one of them closed. The one that was open was a restaurant & bar. We were told they were slow so we just grabbed a fixed sandwich and split it. On the other side of the security checkpoint is a stand that serves sandwiches and snacks. They also have beer. If we would have known this we would have skipped the sandwich at the other place and gotten one here. Since we were still hungry we got some Jamaican Patties. My wife got a beef and I the chicken. Both were good. The guy at the counter was nice. He was blasting some good house music. It was loud enough to provide the terminal with a soundtrack since there was nothing else to do but wait. Regardless of the airline you are flying, everyone shares the same terminal gate. When they call out the flight, the. You get up and present your tickets and they escort the group out to the plane. Biggest issue was the best. It didn't seem there was an A/C and there were no fans, so it got hot. Don't wear a lot of clothes and wear sandals so you don't bake. Overall though, not a bad experience. Everything went smoothly for us.

In 2012 because of Owebummer coming to Miami to campaign causing massive chaos n delay, we were stuck at the airport for 10 hours before getting on another plane nearly missing my cruise, I never forgot that traumatic experience as they were in your face uncaring. I booked JetBlue unfortunately they cancelled my flight n I didn't want the new later flight so I had no choice as AA is the only other airline going to Puerto Rico, I'll never ever take any cruise out of PR, it's chaotic, read my review later. The delay was originally for a short time later it became 1 hrs n making the connection Miami to LAX impossible. They rebooked me for a flight 3 hrs later w 2.5 hrs layover so basically the flight took almost 20 hrs it was insane, they changed gates 9 times! Delta would have apologized profusely n give you tons of yummy snacks n drinks. I took Delta JFK TO LAX N was pleasantly surprised they gave us lunch! They never even alerted me of the flight change n get this now we had 2 middle seats n I had paid for seat selection. It was hell on earth as the chick having the aisle seat was bitchy each time I needed to go to the BR. I posted the picture of the guy ignoring my request, I asked for a coke n 1/2 a glass of water, he gave me water n no coke, I asked him 3 more time he just ignored me, I had no sleep 20 hrs n had no energy to report him to the manager. WTH was his problem, if any manager reads this review pl retrain him in customer service. I have a sister in law n her 2 daughters working as engineers analysts for AA, they fly business class for free around the world so they treat their employees well but if they continue mistreating the passengers they will face consequences n I will post this on my social medias some 15,000 followers and maybe even their web site.
