We've been through this airport numerous times, it's a small island airport with limited services. It had only one place to grab some food (see photo of the snack "cart"), and choices were very limited. It's a great airport if you like lugging your bags up and down stairs! However, if you want to get to St. Croix by plane, this is your place. STX has been renovated in recent years, and it does look updated. It has one runway, but it's long and can accommodate large planes, including 747s. That said, I wouldn't want to land directly after a large plane and get into the passport queue, or the car rental queue. There are only a few rental car places at the airport, and they use outdated equipment and tons of paper, so they are very slow (avoid Budget Rental if possible). And note that on St. Croix you do in fact, drive on the left. They use American cars, but drive on the opposite side of the road (that means wide rights and tight lefts). Although you may be coming through a modest airport with limited food service, you will have arrived at a beautiful island with great scuba diving and snorkeling, nice beaches and a laid back vibe.
Efficient airport that is on the smaller side but felt better than being at Terminal A departures in Laguardia airport so take that for what it's worth. There really are only a few gates here and I cannot imagine what the lines look like when this airport is busy. However, my travels went quite smoothly and I really don't have any complaints. The Customs process was straightforward and the overall staff from TSA to the snack booths were friendly and efficient. I'd strongly suggest that you come prepared with the proper paperwork and take care to be ready. If renting a car upon arrival be sure to check on that first as that can take a while. If getting picked up, work out a designated pick up spot as it can get crowded and cellphone reception can be spotty. There is an airport store that will have any basic items you may have forgotten but it may be on the pricier side. It is a nice touch if you've forgotten one of those essential items that slip your mind when packing! Safe travels.
This is a very small airport. It spans 1,455 acres and has one single asphalt paved runway. Currently, you have to get approval via the Virgin Island Portal prior to arriving here. I am not sure what they do if you don't have approval, but I am sure they wont turn you right back around. The airport was built in 1948 and was originally named in honor of Alexander Hamilton, an American statesman and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. In 1996 it was renamed by the Island's legislature in honor of Virgin Islands own Henry Ernst Rohlsen, an aviator, who was a member of the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II, and first black fighter pilot in the 99th squadron of the United States Air Corps. The airport does not have jetways. You disembark your plane by walking down some stairs in into a door, where they verify your COVID clearance. Then you walk past the rental car counters on your way to baggage claim, if you checked bags. There is only one baggage claim area. The airport has a decent amount of rental cars available, but checking them out is a bit different than the states. They had me go to my assigned car, look for any damage, note it, and bring the form back to them. They then gave me the car and I was on the road. They have a few cabs and shuttles available to get you where you to and from the airport. There are also some cab vans available as well. To get into the terminal with a vehicle you have to take a ticket. I believe the first 15 minutes are free and after that they charge you. I kind of do like that because you do not see many people hanging out in front of the terminal waiting. You should get to this airport early when you are departing because you not only have to pass security, you have to clear customs as well, even though you are going from a US territory to the US, butter it is no difference than when you are traveling to Hawaii. All the airline desk are located curbside and once you check in, you have to take your bag through customs and then agriculture screening. The airport could use a little renovation. It is very small and has a very small terminal. They do not have jetways to get on the plane. You just walk out to the plane and up some stairs. It would probably suck if it was raining. They also do not have a food court. They have a little snack bar that sells light snacks, coffee and drinks. The gates are pretty basic. The chairs do not have chargers for your laptops and phones nor are there any charging stations or televisions. This is a no frills waiting area. This airport serves it purpose. It gets you in and out of the territory. It does not have a lot of the amenities that you may have become accustomed to, but it works. Just remember to get there early when you are leaving and you should be fine.
STX is a small (very small) airport located on St Croix USVI. If you are expecting amenities normally found at larger airports such as luggage carts, variety of restaurants, retail shops, you will be quite disappointed. However, the warmth of the island, the gorgeous Caribbean sky and view is quite welcoming and will reduce the disappointment. Currently, there are renovations going on and hopefully some new services will be offered. The taxi stand is at the entrance to the baggage claim. WARNING: the taxis are somewhat of a racket. A :10min ride may cost you $25-$35 with the driver's discretion to charge additionally per bag especially if you are uninformed. Be sure to pick up the St Croix This Week magazine and check the Taxi Services section. Taxi prices should be outlined. Also, it seems to be standard to charge $20 for a taxi anywhere, whether :10min or :30min EACH way. When visiting, I always factor in taxi costs. There is a local 'bus' (actually a van) but there is no formal schedule posted anywhere. You can always ask a local where and how best to catch it for interested. It is much cheaper but only goes in limited areas. Otherwise, car rental may be an option. Lastly, the St Croix This Week magazine is a great source to find out about events, places to see, things to do, and maps of the island for exploring. I love St Croix, the people are friendly and hospitable and the views (sunrise and sunset) are breathtaking. Enjoy
Airport needs somec remodeling. Use the gift shop outside of the terminal as there's a mailbox trust there for post cards. Customs is on this side so plan accordingly. The line is really long!!! No fruit! There's only one room, so you don't have to run to your gate but you will need to climb stairs to get into the plane.
ST. CROIX!!!! This has to be the smallest airport I've ever been to. When you exit the airplane you better hope its not raining, because your coming down some stairs and walking a good bit into a 2 gate airport lol. Yep. However its nice to not have such a busy airport. There's a little convenient store and pictures with history story's written underneath each picture. The highlight is as soon as you grab you luggage there is a Cruzan Rum stand handing out FREE SHOTS!!! Yes all is right with the world :)
Ahhh, arrived in St. Croix with no issues...Quick arrival and luggage wasn't lost. Departure was a bit more sketchy. Security lines here are a bit crazy as the flights all seem to be within an hour of each other. If you rent a car I suggest paying for the gps as internet access on the island sucks and Google Maps may not work too well. Also, give yourself extra time to return the car. You have to bring the car to the drop off-then someone will drive you in your car to the departure area. Very few amenities...small, overpriced snack stand and a small, overpriced gift shop once you pass through security. NO WiFi!!!
Timing / customs / food tips: There are few restaurants near the airport, each is a hole-in-the-wall. There is only 1 small snack bar in the airport. There are sufficient gas station choices within 3 miles. It took me 50 minutes to get to my gate from the nearby gas station with Delta sky priority status and TSA pre. Without priority, I would have had to wait behind ~15 people checking bags. Process: A Hertz employee drove us (and or bags, in our rental) from the car return facility over to the Hertz desk at the terminal to sign paperwork. Checked bags at the Delta desk outside. Picked up bags and took them through the customs line. (Customs said it's always better to use a passport. We got through with an expired passport... 11 years expired! We might have been able to get through with just a driver's license. Not sure.) Dropped bags at the final drop point. Went through TSA. Arrived at gate. It wasn't obvious what to do at each step, but some one gave me directions at each step. So it was easy. Very little walking. Little waiting.
A decent little airport with a crazy check-in system. It accepts TSA pre check, although those with Global Entry get top priority. Passengers must go through a Customs check, then an agricultural check and finally the line where you place your suitcases and personal items through the scanner and may be body scanned as well. It's then you enter into the large waiting area with plenty of seating and air conditioning. Off to one side is a small Duty Free shop and a "Cafe & Bar" where you can purchase EXPENSIVE food. My hot dog was a whopping $11! The food board said it came "with all the trimmings." An employee directed me to a self-serve stand where the "trimmings" included packets of mustard, ketchup and mayonnaise! My small fountain drink in an 8-oz insulated cup cost $5.25. Airport food traditionally is expensive but wow! Thankfully all employees were friendly and efficient. read more

It is pretty good for such a small airport. They accept global entry and TSA pre check. The lines are well organized despite being the Sunday after thanksgiving holiday. I went to St Thomas(STT) last year and compared to that, STX is so much better. Another difference I noticed: STT didn't have e filters for water and STX does. A big plus for me who always carry and reusable water bottle. There is a small snack bar. The a/c is good and there is plenty of seating. read more

Expensive, bad food. Slow to non existent service. We waited an hour for a $100 pair of burgers and fries. We were forgotten. Eat before your flight. Plenty of good food in the island. read more

Not my favorite airport, a small island airport is expected to be less extravagant than a big city one. Most of the issues I stumbled over was the fault of my airline. Customs/TSA was a breeze, some of the agents were a little rude. The gates were cramped, they had a small (VERY overpriced) "snack bar." A subpar airport. read more

Small airport with no amenities. A duty free shop and a sandwich stand. Both way over priced. There is a shiny side, free rum when you land!!! read more

Nice little airport. Flew in with no delays and I felt safer here than in any of the big cities around the world. People seem a bit friendly but perhaps I was expecting more friendliness. There is a pic of Tim Duncan right outside don't miss it. read more
