The D Piper Inn is the only place to stay on the Rockaway Peninsula, as far as I know, unless you have a friend with a bungalow. This is a mid-size house with a porch and bar on the first floor, beach cruisers parked in the backyard, and dogs, cats, and guests relaxing everywhere. Our room was charming but simple, grab a doughnut and coffee on the way out, if you'd like. This is a beach inn, not a froofy bed and breakfast your aunt and uncle would pick for a romance-rekindling getaway. And that's how we like it. Stayed at this place in late September and had a really nice time. I'm a huge fan of old hotels, and this place definitely has a rich history. Peter, the dude who runs the place is really cool. He made us feel right at home and offered us beach towels, and coolers to bring to the beach. This impressed me. It's located stones throw from the shore, and is also right next to a few delis, supermarkets and restaurants. The subway trains are right there also. read more

We really enjoyed our stay at the D Piper. Peter the owner is a great guy who cares about making sure you have an enjoyable stay. The inn itself is very cozy - fun rooms to sit in and great outside space to relax in. You cannot stay any closer to the beach and Peter has bikes available for your use which makes cruising the boardwalk a must! After a long day at the beach the open air porch was a great place to unwind and read. As mentioned the beds are not the most comfy but after a long beach day and the warm atmosphere of the inn you barely notice. We are looking forward to going back - see you there! read more

This place was awesome. The owner/operator hangs around all day with the 2 cutest, sweetest little dogs. He's got towels, umbrellas, beach chairs, coolers, ice.. whatever you need for the beach. Our room was super cold and totally clean. We had a fridge and microwave and the bed was very comfortable. The block is a little sketch, but no more or less so than any other block in Rockaway. Unlike some other reviews, we were not harassed or worried about our stuff/car/safety at all. Will definitely return next summer! read more

Booked two nights through the Innkeepers website. This lovely turn of the 20th century Inn is a perfect location for a romantic getaway or to simply escape the city and enjoy the beach. It is a short walk from the NYC ferry and is just steps away from the beach. Peter, the innkeeper, went out of his way to welcome us and make us feel at home. Towels, beach chairs, ice and morning coffee was complimentary. There is an outdoor shower to rinse off after the beach. The front porch and back yard were lovely spots to relax. The room was quaint and very clean, the bed comfortable. This was a find. read more

Loved this place, we arrived a bit late due to a family gathering and some bad snow and we were warmly welcomed by peter who gave us a great history and convo about the place. Upon arriving, we were greeted by inn owner Peter, a large, unkempt man. We could tell immediately that Peter was a free spirit, as indicated by his laid-back attire: a black t-shirt, no pants, socks, and white-ish ill-fitting underwear. He kindly waived us in, right in to a thick cloud of his cigarette smoke, which filled the cramped, dark space like a mysterious fog. I noticed a litter of puppies lying on the ground in the room immediately to the right of the entrance. "Wow, nice puppies!" I remarked, intrigued. "Thanks. $2,600 each," Peter grunted through one side of his mouth, balancing his impossibly long-ashed cig out of the other. Peter then reared back and yelled "MAAAAAAAAAA!!!!" at the top of his lungs, à la Will Ferrell in Wedding Crashers. A frowning, little old lady emerged from the shadows, mumbled something incoherent in our direction with a beckoning waive and began walking up the stairs. "She's blind," explained Peter. We made it to our room, which was charming/disgusting, and took a look out the window. We saw some people milling about on the large second floor balcony/rooftop of the house next door, a halfway house. Their balcony stretched right up to our room's same-level window, which allowed for convenient face-to-face interaction with several recovering drug-addicts and/or current drug addicts. "Yeeeeeeeah..." one of them exclaimed a foot or two outside our blind-less window while casting a creepy, aggressive glare at my wife. While very entertained, we considered leaving, but it was late and we were tired. Luckily, there was a late night dollar store around the corner that sold knives. My wife and I were able to fall asleep eventually, over the playful 'round the clock ruckus emanating from the loony bin next door, comforted only by my new dollar store knife I placed on the bedside table. read more

D Piper Inn is a great alternative to renting a house out in the Rockaways and definitely beats taking the subway back to the city after a long day at the beach. The owner, Peter is super friendly and made our stay pleasant as a peach. The set-up of the Inn allows you the privacy of your own room, but full use of the community areas (back patio, big front porch, bar with free coffee/coffee cake in the morning). When we arrived we settled in to our room and then had to head back down to meet up with friends at the beach, so, it was amazing that there were bikes there for us to use! We rode the bikes for the day and even took them with us when we headed out for dinner and drinks - made getting around super easy. read more

Had a wonderful stay with my husband this weekend. The house is gorgeous and our room was spotlessly clean and cozy with very comfortable beds. Extremely frustrating and disappointing when you make a reservation a month in advance on the phone and then you call to confirm the morning of and the owner acts like he never spoke with you and denies you a room over Labor Day weekend. Such a lovely place. The location is great -- convenient to the subway but still peaceful and right next to the beach. The inn was clean and had everything we needed, including free use of beach chairs, towels, and coolers. The owner, Pete, is a warm host and a great conversationalist who knows the neighborhood like the back of his hand, but if you're there for some quiet time he's respectful of that too. We came on a busy August weekend and will definitely be back in the off-season. read more

Had an amazing time at D Piper Inn -- we were going to stay for a night so we could enjoy 2 full beach days and not take the A train back to Manhattan. The afternoon when we were supposed to head out, we decided to stay an extra night because we couldn't leave! Peter the owner is a cool guy and very nice, and the other guests were as well. The Inn and the people it attracts have very good energy. We loved the cozy, spotless rooms with strong AC, private full bathrooms and comfy beds and the quiet mornings with coffee and sitting outside on the comfortable lounge chairs. And after coming back at night after a long beach day and dinner out, having a drink and conversation with whoever may be sitting on the patio. It is a gorgeous old house with interesting corners, crevices and furniture. We are already planning our trip back! read more

Stay at your grandmother's house in Rockaway. We are Manhattanites and were unfamiliar with Rockaway Beach. We found D. Piper online and liked that it was 1 1/2 blocks from the A line and steps from the beach. We stayed one night - a Saturday in July. The caring and watchful proprietor and housekeeping staff run a very organized and clean ship. The old house is charming, full of comfy sofas, polished wood floors and rose embellished lamps. Rooms are smallish but cozy. There are hooks for everything, medium size fridges and light tasteful quilts. Complimentary coffee in the morning. The house has several "living areas" indoor and out for guests. D Piper will lend you a cooler and folding chairs for the beach and has an outdoor shower to wash the sand off upon your return. No need to rent a bike. He's got them! We had a very nice stay and plan to return. Far Rockaway is getting back to business after hurricane Sandy and there has been much restoration and clean up. Spend a weekend in Rockaway and help support their comeback. Prices are still reasonable. read more

We only spent 2 nights and 3 days here. Next time it will certainly be longer. We had a fantastic time. The room was clean and met all of our needs. Fridge, Microwave, Ceiling fan and A/C. We used the beach chairs/towels he had available. Distance to beach / price point ratio is spot on. Price was $20 - $80 cheaper than everything else we looked at and I would have paid $20 more now knowing the charm and location of his place. The street is typical of all streets there so no point in even commenting on it. We did not have any issues at all and we walked from 118th street to 67th street and from shore to shore. When we weren't entertaining ourselves throughout the great areas of Rockaway Beach we always had Peter back at the D Piper to relax with. He made the whole experience perfect. I have stayed at Bed and Breakfast places before and a lot of the times you feel like you are intruding in someone's home. Not so here. We felt like Peter was a distant friend we were reuniting with from a long time ago. We sipped drinks on the patio in the ocean salt air comparing / sharing stories. We even canceled an outing on the second night due to the peaceful, friendly and relaxing atmosphere. Peter offered great knowledge of the area on where to go and what to see. We had a great time here and I would recommend it to anyone. If I were to complain about anything then it would be the parking. There isn't a lot available and it can lead to some anxiety if not in a proper spot. I am not accustomed to this but I understand this is a way of life in most cities. I'm a country boy so it is my Achilles heel. We did not have any trouble and Peter was extremely helpful AGAIN. The entire vacation was fantastic and I attribute our ability to have a fantastic time all to the D Piper Inn and more importantly Peter. We had a comfortable, easy, welcoming and safe place to always fall back on and above all that is the most important part of any place away from home. My friend and I had a great, relaxing stay at this charming inn! Can't beat the fabulous beach location, the rooms are welcoming, comfortable and clean, and the owner Peter is a great host. He's a cool guy who cares about your stay and takes a lot of pride in his place - and it shows! Nice place on dead end street with ocean. The biggest problem is the owner, who has a number of issues. It not an old couple telling nice stories its sad man with lots of anger. I could list too many reasons not to stay here but 1 reason was Peter calling me a jew and saying I work for a jew. Now I am not jewish but the hate in his voice made it uncomfortable too say the least. All this on top of the months rental he told me to put a claim in and collect it in 10 years. I stayed here with my husband as a bday gift to him. The weather ended up being not so great but we made the most of it. Got down to the beach which is literally a step away with our chairs that were lent to us. A bonus move from the inn, the owner also offered cooler and bikes if we wanted. I've been coming to far rock away for some years now (used to live in Brooklyn and currently Astoria. I would come back here again in a heart beat. I loved not having to worry about getting back on the bus after a long day at the beach. The feel of the space was very much us, super cute vintage, clean and welcoming. I found the owner comical, interesting and ended up spending a while talking to him about his experience living there. He offered restaurants and bars for us to go to. I don't even want to say this because I don't want people thinking they would get the same treatment but he even saved us a few bucks and dropped us off at a nearby restaurant for dinner. Yes the block is a little dicey but honestly we didn't feel unsafe at all, hey its a queens beach not the Hampton's end of day be realistic here.
