At this point in my life, I would sleep in some pretty dire conditions if it meant I don't have to wake up with the demons my wife gave birth to in the morning. Thankfully, when we got the chance to get away from those adorable little monsters, we were able to book a room at the Nu Hotel. The room was surprisingly pricey, but still more affordable than the other options nearby (there may have been something happening at the Barclays Center to drive up the rates). And aside from a slightly funky smell upon entering (I hope it was just a fluke), the room was nice. It was just about all the things we were looking for, which was basically a decent bed and a clean bathroom in this neighborhood. We had grand plans to go out to brunch the next morning, but horrific hangovers meant the continental breakfast came through in the clutch (much appreciated), and the post breakfast nap was necessary, right up until the noon check out. The guy who checked us in and the lady who checked us out were both quite pleasant, and that was the extent of our interactions with the staff. I'd do it again, if only for the most reasonable rate in the area, and getting the hell away from my kids.

I really wanted to like this hotel, but things went wrong from the time of check-in until I left. When I arrived, the staff who was at the front desk was not friendly and did not even lift her head up to acknowledge myself or my husband. I overlooked it and figured she may be having a bad day. Upon receiving the room key, we proceeded to make our way upstairs when I opened the door, there was only one bed. I requested a room with two queen beds. I tried to call the front desk, but nobody answered the phone so I made my way back downstairs with all of my luggage. I told the staff at the front desk the situation, but she proceeded to interrupt me and her response was "it's for two people". Not sure what that was supposed to mean, but I showed her my reservation summary where I booked for two beds. She just said give me your key cards and she handed them back to me after reprogramming the new rooms. We went to our new room and encountered more issues which included a stain on the sheets, broken drapes, a dirty shower and floor, and the iron was missing from the room. I attempted to call down and request an iron but once again no one answered the phone. My husband and I took another walk back to the front desk and requested an iron which she said somebody would bring it to the room. The iron we received was broken. We also attempted to order food but was told they are not serving any so we had to walk and find an outside option. Also, the amenity fee that the hotel is charging on their website was not honored. It states a $10 credit towards NU bites, a complementary pour upon arrival, bike rental, slippers, and more all which I was told they no longer do. I work in a leadership role and a well known company and having one unprofessional staff or not updating policies to current status can have a huge negative affect on the brand. This staffs customer service skills was not reflective of someone who should be the first interaction people experience. The next morning when I got off of the elevator the same staff did not even have the courtesy to say hello or good morning. She just had her head buried in her phone. There were no napkins put out for breakfast which when I asked still none came out in the ten minutes I waited. Overall, not a good experience. I overlooked the fact the noise level was the worst I've ever encountered in a NYC hotel, but I could not let go of the inappropriate behavior of one staff.

The room was clean and the location worked for me. Those are the only two good things I can say about this hotel. The lobby and front desk had the feel of a nice-ish convenience store. The front desk staff were cold. The first room I got was on the 2nd floor. When the elevator doors opened it smelled like NYC on trash collection day. I immediately went down and asked for a new room on a different floor. Luckily I got one but the woman at the desk acted put out. The room I got on floor 3 had drab grey walls and a bed that looks like a pull out couch. I felt like I was in a dreary dorm or very nice prison. Very dim and depressing. I booked two nights but the first night I could only sleep 2 hours because the bed not only looked like a pull out couch but felt like one as well. I couldn't get my money back for the second night but I left and got another hotel anyway. Then when I got home I saw a charge for $60+. Upon calling I was told that that was an "amenities fee" and that I must not have heard the person tell me about it but that someone definitely must have because they always do. I assured the person on the phone that I would have heard that. For such a bootleg hotel to have the nerve to have a "resort fee" for breakfast that I never saw, a gym I never used, and wifi is laughable. Just no.

Had an opportunity to stay at the Nu Hotel this weekend. While we are still amid a global health crisis, I was impressed by how accommodating the hotel staff was. Everyone was friendly and wearing masks. The service was great and they even gave me a kit with a quality mask, hand sanitizer, and other information about COVID-19. We were able to socially distance when using the elevators and there was a lot of hand sanitizer stations throughout. The hotel was spacious and amazing. Very swanky and close to good eats in downtown Brooklyn.

Professional customer service is what you get at this hotel. I emailed the hotel to arrange a surprise staycation for my mom and cat (You need to sign a waiver and will be charged a $100 one-time cleaning fee) - Katherine B. , account manager, responded to me in a timely and professional manner. They offered a very good rate and prepared some welcoming refreshment in our urban suite. I felt so welcomed the moment I connected with them - good customer service goes a long way. NU Hotel is a boutique hotel located at downtown Brooklyn where it is surrounded by a bunch of good restaurants. Make sure you grab a pizza at Sottoca, omakase at Ki Sushi, smoked brisket sandwich at Mile End & pastries at Bien Cuit etc if you happen to stay here. They are all within 5 to 10 minutes walking distances and I guarantee you wouldn't regret your choices. I had a great time here with my family and I left with a bigger tummy.

So this needed to be its own post... Y'all know I love graffiti and taking pictures so I wanted a space that felt unique and eclectic... Not a chain hotel and I picked up on the nuhotel It was a cute little boutique hotel situation... I chose a room with a mural ... next time I want the room with the hammock And for an NY room it was huge... I def recommend if you're in Brooklyn Oh and it's one of very few Brooklyn hotels with parking ... there is a garage next to it, but I luckily found on street parking every I took away a star because my sink drained slowly and overflowed and there was a stain on the bed skirt I didn't notice until the last day of the trip

Small hotel centrally located by the prison. Joking aside, good location walkable to major subway stop (Jay/Metro), b61 bus and others, shopping, jail, courts, food. Cute and nicely updated. Free breakfast till 10.

Such a cozy and comfy stay in Brooklyn!! I stayed here for two nights with my boyfriend as we visited the area. Positives: -Friendly and down to earth desk staff -Free cookies for guests in the lobby (delicious btw) -Comfiest bed ever! -Hardwood floors free from allergy dust -Low to ground beds (which I loved!) -Clean rooms -Chalkboard in bathroom a very fun and cool touch -Free coffee and keurig in room -Close proximity to stores -Easy walk to Fulton Street -Window has noise isolation from street cars -Lo'ccitane products in bathroom -Free breakfast in the morning (but it's a small light selection: i.e bagels, toast, coffee, kashi bars, fruit) Negatives: -room was hot and radiator wouldn't blow cold air -windows open only one inch -LED lights by the bed were broken so we couldn't read -desk chair didn't roll well -Detention center was across the street but didn't bother me. I felt safe inside the room. As far as Brooklyn goes this was an excellent hotel. Had a few issues as far as room temp was concerned but I loved my stay. Our room was directly in the front of the hotel so we had a nice view of the streets ok BK. I would definitely stay here again if I was in the area.

On top of that, there were plenty of coffee shops and local restaurants nearby, so I never had to go far for a good bite or my morning coffee. Being a Hilton Honors member made check-in a breeze, and I was even gifted complimentary water upon arrival, which was such a thoughtful touch. The room itself was clean, cozy, and perfect for a short stay. The view from my window was amazing especially at night and I loved how quiet it was, making it easy to fully relax after long days out. They also have great amenities like a gym and a breakfast buffet every morning. The waffle machines, fresh fruit, and coffee were definitely highlights and a great way to start each day. At one point we needed another blanket, I normally get cold in any hotel I am in. They delivered that in a great amount of time. This really is a great location. It is about a 16-20 minute walk to the water area. I felt pretty safe at the hotel and the surrounding area. It is easy for ubers, taxis and ride share services to pick up and drop off. The room was comfortable for both my friend and I. There were two beds in our room which is exactly the type of room we booked. We did have issues with the AC. I am hoping they repaired it and looked into it after we left. It was warm in the room for s little, but by the time it was getting late it cooled down and I slept comfortably. Opening the window was not going to be an option. I would not sleep well to the ASMR sounds of NYC in real life. HEHE. They were helpful though. Overall this is a great hotel to stay at if you are wanting to be on the Brooklyn/Dumbo area. Perfect stay and the cost was not too bad. I was able to use points.

After walking all around with all of our heavy luggage we finally found our room, up on level 2. 4) When I got in the room there was a very loud buzzing (which turned out to be the mini-fridge), and the toilet seat was too small for the toilet by a few inches (uncomfortable and unsanitary, as your legs sit on the actual porcelain of the bowl). I went down to the front desk to tell them and the kid (literally, a kid) at the front desk told me "I'm not really sure what to do about that." 5) I asked to switch rooms and was told the hotel was full, but he would call and someone would be right up to help. I waited half an hour before calling down to the desk again and talking to a different person who told me the first person likely forgot, and said he would send someone within 5 minutes. About 10 minutes later I get a call to say "sorry, there is nothing we can do because maintenance does not work on weekends." 6) I asked if maybe a manager could help and was told there was no manager on duty (hmmmm....a completely booked hotel on a Friday night, and no manager on duty). 7) I was then told I should try pulling on the toilet seat to see if I could move it forward myself. I explained that it was bolted in, even if I could move it, it was too short, and if I am paying the money to stay at a Hilton, I don't expect to have to fix the toilet in my room myself. 8) Later when I went to take a shower I noticed dirt in the corners and then discovered that one of the handles was missing, and someone "fixed" it, by screwing a screw partly in. The idea was that you use the screw to turn the thing from side to side. 9) While I was in the shower all my toiletries fell into the sink. This is because the shelf above the sink was not screwed in properly and tilted forward (the amount of toiletries I had up there consisted of 3 small, light bottles, so not a weight issue). 10) The first morning we were woken up before 6 am by a mother letting her toddler run up and down the hall while she called to the child and laughed hysterically. 11) on the second night we were woken up just before 1 am by extremely loud music coming from the patio. After about 10 minutes I called the front desk and the phone was answered immediately (meaning the person was right there). This is important to know because the patio is right next to the front desk and they did nothing about the noise until someone called downstairs to complain. Even then, they just turned it down rather than off. All this, despite signs saying that after 10 pm was quiet time. The only things that were good about the stay was the air conditioning and a comfortable bed (comfortable once you were in it...it was so close to the wall on one side that you had to be careful standing up).

Anyone's who's had the pleasure of engaging in business travel knows that it's long hours getting to and from the job site, not eating Michelin star meals but more often at chain restaurants, and of course, not staying at the Ritz Carlton...but at places like TownPlace Suites in Brooklyn. I just finished up a multi-week stay here for a big project. It wasn't terrible; but also not amazing. I'm a Marriott loyalty member, so I try and book at these properties if given the choice. Located in the Gowanus/Park Slope neighborhood, it is conveniently located a 2-3 min walk from the Union Street MTA stop; which is good since there really isn't a lot of parking associated with the hotel. The Good: * Central location - My NY office was near the Barclay's center, so I walked daily to and from the hotel. And it is within a 15-20 min of the always Park Slope neighborhood replete with trendy restaurants and shopping. And being near a MTA stop is a HUGE plus since it also made getting to NY Penn station easier. * Included breakfast - It's not anything fancy, but it's nice not having to spend any Per Diem on breakfast. Surprisingly, the coffee is flavorful and strong. In additon to dairy creamers, non-dairy (Oat and Soy Milk) creamers are also provided. Otherwise, it's the usual assortment of pastries, cereal, and hot items like sausage/bacon, powdered eggs, etc. Again, nothing fancy but it's nice at 6:30am to just hop on the elevator and be able to grab breakfast without having to leave the hotel. * Room layout - Upgrades to this property include Container Store branded Elfa shelving in the closet. This proved more helpful that I thought since I was able to place my roller bag at waist level for easy sorting; and hanging suits and other clothing was convenient. As usual, for business travelers, an iron and mini-ironing board are also provided. Bathroom was clean and the shower had good water pressure with wall mounted body wash, shampoo/conditioner. Kitchenette with microwave and sink was also handy. You can request a mini-induction cooktop if you want to prepare any food. * Daily housekeeping - This "perk" seems to be rapidly disappearing across hotels. It was nice to have housekeeping refresh towels, come back to a made bed, and trash emptied. * Fitness center - I used it a few times. Treadmills, stationary bikes and some weights. Not bad if you want to get a workout in. The Bad: * Thin Walls and Door - Many reviews note the "paper thin walls," and I agree with that assessment. As referenced, this is not the Ritz Carlton, so don't be surprised if you "accidentally" overhear your neighbors convos if they're speaking loudly. The hotel has a "quiet hours" policy between 10pm-5am, but I can attest that several nights, inconsiderate guests returned around 1-2am and were quite rowdy which I'm sure awakened everyone along the hallway. * Loud HVAC unit - more and more hotels are switching to the "invidual window HVAC units." I get it. Installing central air heating and cooling units in each room is cost prohibitive. But these window A/C units are so loud that it makes sleeping difficult * Transitional neighborhood - The immediate area is "safe," but a few nights when my colleagues were walking back from the Union Street MTA, there is currently an empty lot where there were some "questionable" people hanging around...and I'll leave it at that. I'm sure in another 3-5 yrs, a high rise selling million dollar condos will be erected. This is NYC, so don't be shocked by the prices. I paid the corporate rate, so my pricing is not representative for what a "regular" customer would pay. TBH, for downtown Brooklyn this TownPlace Suites isn't bad.
