Had an awful time in the store today. I went with my girlfriend to buy her some Pokémon cards and while we were there I looked at the Magic: the Gathering singles. Upon asking to purchase one, I was informed the price was actually three times the listed price stickered on the card. Went to D20 today with my family, a special trip. Ben, the owner, listened to what we all were looking for and made personalized recommendations for all of us, and even for a friend of ours - and we all ended up getting something! I found a hard-to-find game I'd been looking for for a long time, we got Pokemon cards, and I also asked about "small and portable" games we could bring camping, etc - and we got several of those too that we are really looking forward to playing. Really appreciate the thought and listening that went into the recommendations - this would be a great place to buy presents for people, kids or adults. I'm not a Magic player - don't know anything about it - but was so impressed by the way there were people continuously and happily playing at the tables in the back of the store, and there seemed to be lots and lots of cards and supplies for Magic. What we do want to come back for is the Saturday Pokemon games from 11-1 -- we asked about it, and it sounds like a really collaborative environment to learn to play in, where people are rewarded for teaching and supporting the newer (not always younger!) players. read more

My favorite game store! The owner Ben is amazing and should be a model for all other game store owners in the East Bay. Wizards, you should pay close attention as to how things are run here because ALL Magic events could learn a thing or two from the community that plays here. Casual is the wrong word, it's more like a family. Don't get me wrong there is some serious competition as well, but nobody takes it personally. I stopped into D20 this morning with my 8 year old nephew. He usually talks at me a mile a minute about Pokémon and it's all Greek to me, so I was super thrilled to find a place with people who speak that language. Healy was at the counter and was incredible. She's passionate about Pokémon (and Magic and D&D, it turns out) and got my nephew set up with a Pokémon starter deck. She then introduced him to Julian for a game primer and he was really patient and encouraging as he got the kid up to speed. After that, my nephew had the time of his life in the Saturday morning Pokémon tourney playing with other kids who love it as much as he does. I loved it too--I sat on the couch and enjoyed some quiet time! D20 provide a wonderful environment and welcoming community for the neighborhood kids... thank you! Everytime I come in they are always out, and or don't have what I need from them. The employees are always young teens who get frustrated and get mad when you ask them any sort of question what so ever... this young guy kept slamming the enter button on the keyboard furiously when i was asking him a question about a card and he was getting very frustrated. All i wanted was the pricing for the card. Since the prices are never listed or always wrong. Several times a card that actually had a price, after they google search the cost of the card... sometimes say its more than what its priced at! So dont trust the actual prices listed on the cards... The only nice employee i have met here is a girl who is actually kind and likes to help is moving to Michigan. If you wanna play cards with people here its perfect. But if you are wanting to get stuff for your magic decks like sleeves, specific cards and or have a question... better take it somewhere else because they dont want to help you and or dont have what you need. I live 3 blocks away from this place and walk here often but always leave feeling disappointed. If you need any Magic cards or anything of the sort its probably best to take your business to Eudimonia in Berkeley. read more

I took a very large collection of MTG cards in from my youth to sell, A footlocker absolutely full of thousands of cards spanning many editions with obviously many rare cards. I started the collection in the late 90's with my brother and worked hard as a child to find jobs to independently build this collection. It wasn't just my parents buying things for me it was earned by me. As I got older I didn't play as much and I joined the USMC. The cards stayed in storage for over 8 years. once I came home I didn't have anyone to play with and the cards held little use for me so I finally decided to let go and take them to a shop to be appraised . The owner said because of the size of the collection it would take atleast a couple of weeks to go through and give me a quote for purchasing either the entirety or partial. I left them in the care of this business and the owner. Several weeks later I received a call from him staying that many of my cards had been stolen. He had several of the children that played the game at his store "assist" him in going through my collection and eventually he caught them stealing my cards . Of course there's no clue as to how many cards were stolen. I attempted to be calm about this devastating news despite being in shock that a business would allow non employee minors to access a potential clients valuable asset. The owners only offer to make this good was to comp me some expansion packs a menial in store credit for less than 60 bucks and come play at the store anytime I wanted... absolutely terrible experience , I'm livid to this day. I've heard the shop is good and a decent place to play, all I can say is never trust them to behave professionally. It's a game shop run by players of those games. Not a business IMO. I've recently begun playing again with some close friends and it's so disheartening when I go through my collection. To this day I'm still finding the damage done by the absolute gutting of a very valuable collection. I'll be building a deck and go to find cards I knew I had multiples of or singles and it's just gone. It's not just the monetary value or the gameplay that was stolen, it's the memories of building that collection as a youth and young adult, working jobs as a kid to get enough money to buy cards on my own, safeguarding it for several years as an adult. moving it with me while in my service in the military, prizing it. The single time it was trusted to a "professional" it was ransacked. It's just so disappointing. read more

Youngster attendant at the counter is an unfortunate deterrent. My young friend arrived to join. Unfortunately, the attendant dismissed his joining based on his deck, which is the nature of Magic. However, there was no encouragement to purchase an updated deck to play. There was only repeated comment of "you'll probably lose all day. It'd be a legal deck but you know, you'll lose..." These comments all while he reluctantly rung my purchase. We came to buy a seat, were happy to buy a deck but were disappointed in the exclusive attitude and open distaste for an eager participant. In short, it's in the best interest of a business to encourage new members/followers/patrons, guide them through, encourage further participation that would lead to future purchasing. It's my hope that the owners/staff read this and encourage a more positive and respectful approach to gaming and business. **Owner Ben since contacted me regarding my review. This is an ok place to discover games and cards... if you don't mind a treasure hunt. The store doesn't seem to have a flow... and there's so much stuff packed in this small store. It's a little cluttered, too... Shelves are not really organized by game type, and kinda hard to manuever around just to browse the games, especially when they host Magic tournaments. Tables blocked some parts of the game shelves, even. Customer service is honest and engaging, though. They've moved since then to a busier part of Alameda. The new store is open, but under construction. It's a tight space, to it'll be interesting to see how they utilize the space. I visited there recently, but was un-shoppable, IMO... clearly they're still getting settled in. read more

One of the best nerd stores around for sure. My area of interest is Magic the Gathering so that is what I went there for and I was not disappointed. I was able to take my time looking through plenty of singles. The helpful and friendly staff were able to help me hunt down a few more unusual cards I was looking for without the clique-y atmosphere one sometimes finds in places like this. And finally I was able to participate in a short draft tournament for only $12. I had a lot of fun and definitely recommend it to all of my friends. And it certainly doesn't hurt that it is just a few doors down from American Oak, an excellent whiskey specialty restaurant that serves delicious burgers. Ben is awesome! Was headed back to SF, but took a wrong turn and ended up in Alameda.. figured we'd check out the game stores here and voila! We ended up at D20. If you know what D20 means, this is definitely the spot for you. Well stocked in MTG, Pokemon and a variety of board games as well. Hands down one of the most welcoming and friendly game stores I've set foot in.. whether you want to wait around for Friday Night Magic or learn to play something, you won't feel like a stranger or an awkward newbie asking dumb questions. I really really really wish that we lived closer because I would certainly be a regular here! Even if we couldn't stay for game night, we still bought some sleeves. The prices are standard for a hobby shop and I will pay $2 more to keep shoppes like this around any day, they are what makes a neighborhood! read more

D20 Games is a excellent place to buy board games, pokemon, magic the gathering, and role playing games. Even though the amount of games might not be comparable to other stores like Endgame, D20 does have many games I never seen or heard of. The rpg section can be better as few of the rule books are poor condition with some having ripped pages and torn of covers. Even though I don't much care for pokemon and magic d20 does have lot's of packs to buy and I believe run weekly events for magic and few for pokemon. The staff there is more of a mixed bag with some being pretty cool and quick service to awkward and slow service. In conclusion D20 games is a very nice hobby shop but when buying your games make sure to have some patience with with the cashiers. read more

D20 is the friendliest store possible. People working there want to meet you personally, and they maintain a happy, safe place for kids of all ages. (Their customers really are of all ages.) Everybody is a good sport in there, win or lose. I've watched children play games there with long attention spans, focussed and intense at their game. And, those who lose the game often joke about how badly they were beaten. Even more amazingly, winners don't seem to brag about it. Oh yes, D20 is a great store, too. They seem to carry everything available in or related to needs of Magic, Pokemon, and Dungeons and Dragons players. If you don't see it there, ask about it. They might have it anyway or else they will get it for you if they can. I've heard them make some funny comments about how unavailable certain cards are. They also carry a pretty good assortment of board games, some to play there and also new ones to buy and take home. Tell them what you have liked and what you are looking for in a game, and they will suggest a few good choices and describe how each is played. Whether I'm collecting cards or gear I want, playing games, or just watching intense, happy people, I always find my time there to be a refreshing escape from day-to-day concerns. So I use to go to this spot back in my early (4e dnd) dnd days, and the older owner wasn't keeping the place up. The new owner re-opened the spot under new management and I think his name is Ben? He's definitely a fan of hobby games, especially magic. If I remember correctly he loves legacy nights. Anyways, so this is my first time stopping by the new location. First thing I noticed is that it isn't as big as I thought it would be, but I wasn't there to stick around, I just happened to be in the area and needed some magic sleeves and saw they sold play mats and I got a dual mat. The shop had a kid at the counter, I think it may be ben's son or nephew? I don't shop often to know but he was very welcoming and answered my questions as well. I highly recommend checking out and support this shop, I'm glad they moved to a bigger place, but it isn't on a Main Street like its old location on park st. Nonetheless they're a great spot for your hobby needs, but you can see magic is their bread and butter, which I also forgot to mention they sell singles so those looking for that one high value card, I'm sure they'll have it.
