Hipster spot way up in Somerville but worth the trip! I came for dinner and was able to grab a spot on the back patio (highly recommended). Drink menu had a nice variety of beers, wine and specialty cocktails. I got the Big Daddy IPA and it was perfect. For food they have mostly Greek and American cuisine. I got the Gyro with fries per my waiter's request and loved it. The beef was tender and the sauce had the perfect balance of flavor and spice. On top of this, the service was excellent and everyone was super friendly. You get to escape the pretentiousness up here that's become common in Back Bay and other Boston neighborhoods which is nice. I challenge management/ownership to dispute our experience, we were sitting right under a security camera and arrived at around 8:30 on Saturday May 3rd. Stopped by Daddy Jones, this was my 3rd visit. I really liked this place, it's great menu with creative cocktails. Rarely do I downgrade an establishment or bother to update a review because of one poor service experience alone, but this was simply the worst and most hostile experience I have ever had at a restaurant. It was so bad my friend and I stewed for the next 30 minutes about it... Scratch that, our service was so bad it consumed our conversations for the rest of our night. We sat at 2 open seats at the center of the bar and were quickly were asked to move to the end/corner of the bar because the arrangement made more sense for therm, yeah no sweat... We ordered our first drinks, no problem. We both finish our first drinks, they sit there empty for about 10 minutes after finishing and I'm forced to break a cardinal bar rule, I get out of my seat and walk down to the other side of the bar to tell the bartender my order while telling her I hate being that guy. Our next round comes as well as the sweet potato fries covered on cheese and honey. We had the nerve to request forks and napkins and also got an eye roll, then when she came back with them I asked for ketchup, she had to make 2 trips, you would have thought I asked for her first born. The fries were delicious so we were willing to cast all of this off... Then my friend made the sorry mistake of trying to get in one more drink. Ordered a rum and coke, arguably the quickest and easiest to to push out... And waited a good 10 minutes after placing the order when the 2nd bartender walks by. Bartender #2 walks by the end of the bar and my friend, in the most polite tone, excuses himself and inquires about his drink. Bartender #2 raises her hands and her voice and tells us that she is busy and to wait our turn. Mind you, the restaurant was not at full capacity. I had to interject, I tell her we have had bad service all night, our drink were ordered 10 minutes ago, that there was no need for the tone, and that we now just wanted our check. She doesn't get our check, tells bartender #1 and makes us wait another 5 minutes before bartender #1 just drops off our check, no eye contact, no apology, no mention of the forgotten rum and coke. Bill was $39, we lay down $40... I can't remember the last time I could justify not leaving a tip. Bartender #2 comes back, asking if we want change to leave a tip, I tell her the poor service combined with the lack of any apology for it is good reason for not leaving one. First thing that'll strike you: awkward space. Those responsible for working with the cumbersome, Manhattan-esque "use it or lose it" layout gave Daddy Jones a very comfortable, very Somerville end design. Kudos! Slinging a limited menu of house cocktails (many featuring infusions and heavy on bourbon) and an equally streamlined array of Greek inspired plates, you might not consider Daddy Jones as a spot for a meal. It'll pop up as "that Magoun Square bar that serves Greek food," further proven by the shoulder-to-shoulder spread on stools, while tables sat empty during peak hours. May have misstepped choosing the Dirty Dill Infused Gin ($9), as it's definitely a one-trick pony. Nothing subtle and hardly balanced, the cocktail is a glass of floral brine with a pickled green bean and olive garnish (they've struck the cornichon). The lasting sentiment: "I ordered it to order it, and now I can say I have." But never again. The fried zucchini ($6) is a comfortable start, with the humble squash getting a jet boost from the amazing skordalia, a garlicky dip of pureed potatoes, almonds and quality oil. We saved what was left for my Fish & Fries ($14) - a sizable filet of beer battered haddock, average spuds and a very nice housemade tartar sauce. Our polite and on-point server Alipio promised crunch, but the batter proved too thick and slightly undercooked, leading to the dreaded doughnut layer between filet and crust. Needless to say, it fell apart quickly. The Huxtables on one TV, March Madness on another and Miami Vice rocking a third, I'll gladly pull up a seat at a smart, feel-good addition to Magoun's off-T strip of promise. I went here for dinner because my date wanted "grilled chicken and a salad. Maybe greek food?" I found this place because it was the closest and boy was i glad i did! This place was cudorable! (that's cute and adorable for those of you following). We were very pleased with the outdoor seating. Before the food came out, the atmosphere had already won us over. But wait! Then the food came out! We started off with the rice balls. Do yourself a favor and just order them. They are good. For the main course, there was a greek salad with grilled chicken and a grilled chicken rice bowl. I don't know if they marinate their chicken for days before cooking it but it certainly tastes that way. It was cooked perfectly. I was pleasantly surprised with the fries that came with the rice bowl. Now, what takes the cake for this place is that kids under 12 eat for free. I was already sold on atmosphere and food, but knowing that I can bring our kid for no additional cost is just too good to be true. I have not even touched on the staff. What can i say? They smiled, were attentive, and our food came out quickly and hot. Why not 5 stars? Their menu could have had more options. Daddy Jones is a great place to have some dinner and cocktails. The restaurant is run by Dimitra. I'm being specific for a reason; The place has character and focus. Everything in the restaurant has it's place: fancy antique cocktail glasses, wood place-mats, 'Thank You' cards enclose your check, the dishware is interesting and rotates often. The ice cubes are huge and clear. Attention is paid to detail. It's focused in it's execution. The drink list and food menu are 'small' in that regard. If you need a huge menu to choose from, this likely isn't your spot. This place is about a small menu, done well. However, the bar is well stocked and possesses bottles of things you won't likely find elsewhere. If you like cocktails and absinthe, you should check it out... The bar staff is worthy of a following. Simone, Courtney, and Stephanie are all great in their ability to work the bar. Patient with the indecisive and always willing to make you something special or sample what's on draft. They recently started doing brunch as well and frankly I'd rather not discuss it. Don't expect easy parking...but you can take the bus up Broadway if you're coming from the Powder House Circle area. 1) I love the vibe at DJ. They have nice little tables in front of the bar area, and then some hightop tables farther back. The decor is awesome and, GUYS: they were playing episodes of Doogie Howser off Hulu! 2) The drinks we all had were super good. They do a special whiskey infusion for their Manhattans, which gets switched up regularly. I had their Manhattan Mixed Tape (well, two of them) and an Old Fashioned. Both superb. My date enjoyed the beer selection and got a few beers along with the dill-infused gin drink. STRONG. Excellent if you like dill pickles. 3) The waitress/bartender was the bomb.com. I'm really not a person who normally complains about service, but I couldn't believe how bad the experience was here. tl;dr - Sat around for almost 1.5hrs and only received one of our small plates; had to get a second dinner elsewhere. 1. Came with 3 other people on a normal Sunday evening ~6:45. Weren't greeted at the door for a while so we sat ourselves. 2. Ordered a round of micheladas. Bartender comes over to clarify what we want in it (aka he has no idea how to make this drink). Ends up giving us beer that has hot sauce dumped in it - definitely not a michelada. He could have just fessed up and we would have been fine getting something else, but what he gave us was undrinkable. 3. Ordered 2 plates to start off with. When waiter brings us 1st plate after 30min, he tells us that the other thing we ordered was unavailable. He couldn't have told us that earlier? 4. Waited for waiter for another 15min to place order for other items. Had to flag him down. 5. Waited another 30min for food and items still hadn't arrived. We flagged down waiter to ask for a update on the food, and replied "don't know, kitchen is pretty backed up right now". This was a normal Sunday evening, the restaurant was not even that busy (there were tables empty), and most people were just drinking on the patio area. How could food service have been THIS bad? I've been meaning to check out this spot for a while but am rarely in the area. Finally Saturday night I stopped by with a few friends around 11pm, the place wasn't packed but it had enough people and just the way I like it. I noticed the awesome music they were playing (old school rap) and Dougie Howser on the TV and I loved it. It reminded me of all the cool spots in SF that play 80's music while watching old school tv shows!!! I was hungry so I proceeded to order the steak tips with grilled string beans and roasted potatoes. The steak was a little over cooked even though I ordered it medium but it was still good and had a peppery taste to it. The veggies were great addition to the meal, grilled and seasoned well and the roasted potatoes were huge and cooked great. I ordered the dill gin martini and it was yummy! It was accompanied by olives, pickles and pickled onions and I love pickled veggies. I also loved the decor at the bar where the bottle are stored and glasses, super cool and different! I really, really wanted to like this place. It is walkable from where I live, and one of the few restaurants in the Magoun Square area of Somerville. It also has a patio!! However despite of all of these things, the service I have received on all 3 instances I have visited was just terrible. First time trying it, but we'll be back, mainly because there's way too much of the menu that sounded good! Had a salad of roasted dandelion greens (wow), the fries (solid, but really killer if you get a side of the spicy aioli), and the Mac Daddy. All the food was excellently executed. I really appreciated the solid chunks of perfectly cooked bacon in the Mac Daddy. As I noted to my wife, I normally am unhappy with restaurant Mac and cheese, but a dish where it trails strings of cheese across the table always bodes well. Cocktails were a little hit/miss for me, but I deliberately ordered one I wasn't sure about. The one that sounded good, their drink of the day, was lovely. I'll keep an eye out for the bad repeat service that others have mentioned, but until it hits me, this will definitely be a main spot in our date night rotation. read more

I thought nothing was worse than Maroon 5 but this takes the cake. We shazamed and it's from a Backstreet Boys 2006 album. Pull it up and listen. I'm not crazy. All joking aside, which never happens, try Daddy Jones. You're probably like, "I've always walked by and assumed it was a bondage emporium." NOPE! Daddy Jones, just does everything right. The price, the service, the food, and the drinks. I wouldn't say this place is an underground gem, because it's pretty damn visible and known, but it is definitely worth the drive from a decent distance if you're not close by. There's lots of places I've been to in this area, and Daddy Jones is definitely a safety net when another restaurant/bar experience turns into a dumpster fire. Let me start out by saying I'm only giving them 3 stars mainly because we waited an extremely long time for our food. I will say the restaurant is pretty cute and I love that we were able to sit outside on the upstairs deck. We ordered some yummy drinks and then ordered main courses of the pita sandwiches and I personally got the rice bowl. I think I should've stuck with the pita because the rice in the rice bowl was extremely bland and definitely not worth the extra price. This review is solely for the rooftop area - I loved the atmosphere and the area itself is cozy without feeling cramped. For a cool Friday night, it wasn't too busy and felt relatively private. My 'aqueduct' drink was delicious - small but mighty! - and their drink selection is pretty wide for the size of the actual bar area. Seriously delicious. The name is make of this place makes it seem like a 60-30s creep bar, but then you taste the spanakopita and the name is forgotten. The gyro is deal for $10 and I would eat the saganaki every day if I could. The only thing I don't get, and I will never get, is why would want to sit on a couch while eating? Half the table is normal seating and the other side is a couch so you are a weird foot below your company. Skip the couches and you'll be good. read more

My score is really a bit less than 3 stars. I've been a patron for about 5 years and, unfortunately, the pandemic has really negatively impacted the service and ambiance of the restaurant. The new ordering system requires you to create an account (using a system that seems to apply to only ONE restaurant) and place all of your orders using it. Total and tip are calculated before you are served. Want another drink? Order through the app. More food? Order through the app. If you are there at night you'll be going through this process in the dark as the lighting on the patio is pretty dim. The only interaction you'll have with the staff is when they drop off your food plated on the finest paper plate and plastic cutlery. Totally cheapens the dining experience to be honest. Frankly, due to this new system and the price point, I'm less interested in the place. I understand that we are still in the midst of the pandemic but plenty of other restaurants have maintained or returned to pre-pandemic customs. It's asking a lot when your burger and fries are $17. Food is good but barely worth it these days. I hope they can turn things around because it's just not a compelling dinner proposition. Update (11/10/21): The owner reached out to me after my last visit and explained some of the choices that she made due to Covid. This was fine and I appreciated that she was concerned enough to do this. I decided to go back again last night for dinner. What a difference! Sat inside and all of the issues that I had last time had been resolved. The staff explained that orders could be made using the app or placed with the server. The new tip system which lets all of the employees benefit was also explained before we placed our orders. And there were silverware and ceramic plates again! The waitstaff is still excellent. We had a few gyros and subbed out fries on one of them for an excellent side salad with really good tomatoes. Overall, we were really happy with the experience and it reminded us of the pre-pandemic vibe of the restaurant. Super solid soundtrack was also great. Everything from the cute, plant filled patio to the wonderful staff and even more delicious food make me feel like everything is right in the world. It is hidden enough that you can still get a spot on the patio without waiting too long, they have Giant Jenga and Connect 4, awesome beers, rotating cocktail drinks that are ready on the spot, this week was Banana Painkiller (heavenly caribbean drink). All with an unassuming happy chill vibe. For the food we usually get anything with the grilled meets (seriously try the grilled chicken and or tips), and they also offer an amazing brunch. This review is for August 2017. It's a casual bar with food and some froofy cocktails. My friend and I have often gone here for gyros and beer and simple things of this kind, and we've always enjoyed, but right now they're having some kind of problem in the kitchen. Our food took over a half hour to arrive. My gyro and my friend's chicken were charred black, dried out, and heavily oversalted. Our salads were drenched with oil and mine apparently had a handful of kosher salt dumped on top. People were at the bar, but the tables were almost empty at 7:30 on a Wednesday night, so I guess I'm not the only one to notice there's an issue with the food. Popped over here after a friend recommended. Overall was happy with the food. The space here is phenomenal and very inviting and unique. Started the meal with the lamb wontons which were just ok. The lamb could've been seasoned a bit more. The dipping sauce added some nice flavor but the wonton should be able to stand on its own. Then had a gyro which was really tasty and delivered all the flavors you'd expect for a gyro. Definitely a good spot for some Greek flavors with a cool vibe. read more

One of the greatest feelings is leaving a restaurant thinking "I can't wait to come back", and that's how my friends and I all felt after leaving Daddy Jones this past Saturday night. Their menu isn't super extensive, but everything on it (at least, everything we tried) is fantastic. We started with the pita and dip and some spanakopita, and a round of cocktails. My Greek Smash was smooth and delicious, and my friend got the Do You Remember, which was so good that's what I ordered for my second round. Never would've thought of pairing gin and peaches, but it was the perfect drink for a humid late summer afternoon. For dinner I got the moussaka, which I'm used to getting in a sort of lasagna format with everything sliced, but this was a tower of whipped potatoes and creamy sauce that I wanted to dive into and eat my way out. My partner and one of our friends got burgers, which they both praised to heaven as cooked exactly to their tastes, and the fries as the perfect side. The skirt steak was also ordered to rave reviews (sadly I was sitting too far away to snag a bite). We were too full for dessert, but we all agreed we'd have to come back, hopefully hit up the patio and make a longer evening of it. I used to live in Magoun Square, sadly before Daddy Jones had come to the neighborhood. Love this neighborhood place in South Medford/Somerville/Tufts area! Been here many of times, and always have enjoyed their food and funky decor! This Fall afternoon I met my dad for a quick bite to eat outside in their patio which is super cute and eclectic. I had Craig's burger which I would totally recommend if want a good burger with a nice siracha kick, i also substituted the regular fries for their sweet potatoes fries with honey and feta (totally recommend that as one of their best sides) and we also split a Greek salad which was pretty yummy the only think I would add to it would be a bit more feta cheese to it. Limited menu but my husband really liked the dinner plate, choosing chicken as his particular protein options tonight. I thoroughly enjoyed a side dish of sweet potatoe fries w. sprinkling of feta cheese and honey. Really tasty, generous portion, and interesting combo of ingredients. Planned to only eat 1/2 of container, but too good not to finish up! Also want to add that the owners of this restaurant really deserve thanks for their generous feeding of many without adequate food in our community. FINALLY a restaurant in Boston that uses garlic and salt in their food. Why so bland, Boston? Sweet features: good mix-drinks and a limited-but-solid beer selection, cool decor, good service, awesome throwback TV shows (Cosby Show when I was there), and 90s jams playing overhead. Candy Rain by Soul For Real came on... seriously. It's legit. BUT, like I said, GARLIC AND SALT. And fried food. Get the fried zucchini. The Mac Daddy is ridiculous. It has pork belly and comte in it. Get it. And the Grilled Sausage Sandwich is a delicious mess. The Dirty Dill Infused Gin kicked this beer-drinker's ass, so I passed it off to my BF - it still tasted amazing, I'm just a wimp. I stole his Grey Hound and it was killer. Prices are good, too. It's a pretty small place, and as another reviewer remarked, the layout they went with isn't the most space efficient. There's NO standing room if you just want to grab a drink and hang. I saw quite a few people grab drinks, stand awkwardly/uncertainly in a corner, and then leave because it was uncomfortable. It's good and close to my house. After much anticipation, a lot of hype, and what seemed like a very long delay, Daddy Jones has finally opened its doors to the public a few weeks ago in what previously was Little Vinny's, a family-owned and operated Italian joint. They had a long period of soft opening where Medford-native Maria Menounos named it one of her choice hangouts - something that apparently was supposed to set high expectations for everyone. Upon walking in, one thing that people will notice is how different this place is. It's a very unique space and a very unique bar. The decor is minimal and yet it looks like it was carefully picked to create an inviting setting - There's two televions near the front, which are slightly dimmed and play sports while the lonely TV in the back is playing the Cosby Show. Apparently that show still had a following - I had no idea. Overall the simplicity of it makes it awesome. There's a few quirky touches to it as well, like a few metallic lockers behind the bar that serve as shelves for the various glassware they use and there's also a coocoo clock against the wall. It's not all that spacious in there and yet it never feels cramped, even on its busiest of times. I've been able to snag a spot at the bar and also in the back, on a high top and I can say that my experience at the bar was much more enjoyable and featured much better service. The concept of the bar is quite original and far from generic as they've strived to re-create some of the classic cocktails like the Grey Hound and the Blue Hawaiian, but often times have been able to do so with a unique twist. Their cocktail list features eight distinctive cocktails and they also are able to create others based on taste and what's in demand. I've had their Grey Hound and found it to be quite tasty and the fiancee enjoyed her drinks as well. One my latest trip there, I had a dirty vodka martini which wasn't nearly as good... however... one thing that they seem to excel at is bar bites. It's a Greek-themed food menu (the owner is Greek) and they have things like stuffed phylo, roasted baby eggplant, olives and even lamb skewers. I've been able to get two items from their finger food section, the fries ($4) and the fried zucchini ($5) and both were actually really tasty, especially the latter which blew us away. The value was terrific and the flavors were great as well. I'm sure that the rest of the menu, while a bit limited, is great as well. They also have a minimal but pretty good beer list (although not nearly as good as Old Magoun's Saloon across the street) but then again, they are more of a cocktail bar than a beer bar so.... Service the first time was very friendly and knowledgable but the second time around our waiter wasn't very attentive, slow and not all that friendly. Guess they're still working the kinks out... All in all, I was pretty impressed and look forward to returning for a real meal there and for some more drinks. While I'll always be a bit sad at the fact that Little Vinny's is gone, I couldn't think of a better establishment to replace it with. Welcome to the neighborhood! read more

The bar was nice with good, reasonably priced drinks. The bartenders were attentive and made very tasty cocktails. When I was there, I came with a group of friends--regulars, who try their best to give this bar business. The owner--or, at least, someone who is related to the owners--was working on the night I visited. She was standing behind the bar, and I tried to order from her. However, she didn't even know what was on tap...AT HER OWN BAR! Another bartender had to come to tell me if they had any IPAs on tap. Later in the night, the owner--quite randomly--shows up at our table accusing the entire group of bringing their own booze to the bar, threatening to call the cops, and trying to throw us out. I was in a party of six and everyone was very quiet and respectful at the bar. The owner, however, saw one person getting sleepy and assumed they were drunk: Not off of the bar liquor, but off of her own. This wasn't the case: She bought many dollars worth of liquor at Daddy Jones, as did we all. My first time at Daddy Jones, I was forced to confront the owner with these facts. I think she knew she was in the wrong, and was unable to accept these facts. She kept trying to assert her position by threatening to call the police and kick us out. I stood up for my respectful friends by letting her know that our business would never....and I truly mean never...be here again. I give this place two stars because they have such potential. They need to sell the place to new owners that are not blatantly rude to their paying and respectful customers. I can understand trying to kick people out that are having bar fights, etc... But respectful customers that you accuse--based on suspicion--of bringing in outside liquor? That's not right...especially when we have a bill that shows our alcohol consumption. Daddy Jones has potential, a great vibe, and nice drinks. But...their owners need to get their shit together. I loved the place for an hour and would have brought many more dollars to their profit margin...until the owner was a complete bitch. You've lost customers, and I hope that this review makes you lose many more. read more

So I have this Greek friend. And she likes to eat. So to Daddy Jones we went. It's an interesting little place in Magoun Square in Somerville, recently opened and sort of chic. Pretty cool little place. We had drinks (DJ amber ale by Opa Opa - I quite enjoyed it), appetizers (pita and dip - typical), food (stuffed eggplant - super tasty and chicken souvlaki wrap - also really good) and finished with dessert (pumpkin flan - incredible). How do I love thee, Daddy Jones? Let me count the ways. The bartenders are always really friendly, the cocktails are delicious and rotate just often enough to keep it interesting, and they're one of the only bars I can think of that specialises in Greek food. The dip and pita is a favourite of mine -- add on the skordalia! If you wanted to watch MacGyver or some other 80s rerun while you nurse your drink, they have you so covered. Something like that is always playing on the TV in the corner. It's also generally quiet. I hope they're getting enough business; they're really good and deserve to stick around. read more

Sleek interior and much hipper than what was here before. Our group of 4 came in on a Thursday night and were promptly seated. Unlike other restaurants, service was still great even though we ordered minimal food and a few drinks. I tried the Greek salad which was great. No lettuce in this so it's way more authentic. Just tomatoes, onions, cucumbers in a light dressing with big chunks of feta. I also got the dip plate which included skordalia (essentially garlic and potato dip) and feta red pepper dip. Both were out of this world. I would definitely come back to try more of the menu! read more

I had a Gilt City deal for this place and SO glad to have a reason to venture out and try it! I loved the interior - it was a mix of homey, southern, and modern. They have adorable plateware and a lot to just...look at as you're waiting for your food and scoping out the place. Wait staff were attentive and friendly so no complaints there. Now for food: I had the Strawberry Pimm's which was so delicious to start. We ordered the calamari and fried zucchini as our appetizers. Both were great though I preferred using the calamari dipping sauce with the zucchini. The sauce with the zucchini was a mild garlic-like sauce. For mains, he got the Chris's burger and I got the chicken dinner - both were awesome! The chicken was amazingly moist and the kale greens were delicious. The eggplant 'stew' was more of a salsa but also packed a punch in flavor (Thanksgiving-esque with its hints of cinnamon). I definitely took home leftovers and enjoyed the rest later. The burger was great too - juicy and packed with flavor. We were wary of the english muffin as buns but it was great! If we were locals, we'd totally come back but just might pay another visit if we're in the neighborhood! read more
