These guys have the best sambusa in the cities. It's a little spicy but just pleasantly so. They also have a sticky donut type of thing called a macamacgaan that's delicious. The only downside is that they were really really busy. read more

Yep this is one of those come back time and again, an African "Cheers" kinda lunch hall spot. That is if you're into East African deli food. It's awesome, and beats many of the choices around this part of town. I usually get the $6 lunch special with goat meat, rice, and salad. It's a crazy amount of food for $6. The goat meat is amazing with all the yummy spices, rice is seasoned and moist, and the "salad" is just cut iceberg served with a wedge of lime. If you like spicy, there is NOTHING like "African Hot" in my book. Their pepper sauce, which is green in color, is killer, and a great complement to the meat and rice. A friend once called it "devil's snot." It certainly clears out your sinuses! LOL. If you're adventurous eat in and get the all you can drink mango juice. If you're in a hurry or need to eat in the car, they have the street food selections: Sambusas, fried bread, crepes. It's all very inexpensive stuff and yummy. The area is in a place where you wouldn't be caught dead just a few years ago, still has it's issues today but hey, when the food is this GOOD, this CHEAP - who cares whether you get punctured lungs or you make it back to your car...I'm kidding. It's tucked away right on Chicago Ave & East Franklin in a hole in the wall type of mini mall. Right in the area are a couple of other good spots too, to lunch grab and go - Great Dragon & Best Steak & Gyros. They have got Subway too, for those health-conscious intelligent people. Minimal decor, low lighting with clean space, the servings are huge and you won't find anthing above $8. It's a strictly Somali menu with a mix of Middle Eastern. But what I love the most about this place is the (Mandhaazi) similar to a donut, not as sweet. It is a triangular/rectangular fried bread served with tea/coffee and with Sambusas/Samosas, which are my favorite appetizers here. A triangular crispy fried shells filled with your choice of shredded beef/fish/chicken and other various fillings. The (Nafaqo) is also pretty good here - a boiled egg enveloped in mashed potato. While you may walk into an atmosphere of concern here, you are guaranteed to leave with a smile so big, it will rock you out of andropause and back into puberty. read more

I saw staff come and go while the non-existent decor slip south. Best Sambusa in town! I lived in MPLS for a long time and I have never been anywhere else that has better sambusa. I live in St Paul and I drive all the way to get their Sambusa. I also get it for every work celebration and every school event for my kids. I highly recommend their sambusa. It's very busy during Ramadan but they are fast. Menu board is a bit confusing - there were a few items that looked the same but the cashier just read the title of the dishes to me when I asked the difference.... "OK I guess i'll just get the goat and rice platter!" It was fantastic - meat was tender and fall-off-the-bone, spiced well with hot fluffy rice. Mango juice was pretty sweet but nice refresher on a hot summer day. Banana was perfectly ripe. My only complaint is that they still use styrofoam. read more

I'm a big proponent for hole in the wall places. Why? Because of small joints like Daily Cairo Grill. I work around this area late night couple of days a week. When it gets dark I am too terrified to walk by myself to get dinner. So, i decided that I would try to grab dinner/takeout before my shift. Originally, i was thinking of going to the Subway next door, but I saw people walk in here and thought "why not?" The cashier and presumably manager/owner are super super nice. They explained to me how to order because i looked like a lost kitten. The food here generally are served take out style (aka steam table). I was a little wary at first because the prices are so low (everything is below $6?!). I opted for goat stew with pasta but apparently they ran out, so apparently you got to go in early for the exotic stuff. I end up getting beef stew with pasta. It came with a banana (which i still dont really get), and a soda. The box of food was like 2 pounds. I stuffed myself like an obese lady in front of my colleagues. The beef stew was delicious. I thought it was going to be more curry based but it was very much like a beef gravy. I could eat a whole box of this again right now. Drools. The pasta, surprisingly, does not take like traditional italian pasta although it looks like a tomato based sauce. It actually is more savory than the tangy tomato/marinara sauce. It had lettuce on top (strangely) and small limes. Although the setup sounds weird, it was oddly good together. I can't pinpoint what about it was so good. It was just a party in my mouth. This box of food plus a banana and a drink was $6. I could have probably split it into two meals but again, i lack self control and typically try to stuff everything in front of my in my belly. The sambusas! they are a dollar each and so so so good. they are meat (beef) filling with onions and some other yummy stuff. I didnt take much of a look because i just scarfed it down. [Sorry for lack of pictures. I recently been starving by the time i get food, so the inner fatty in me decide i must eat first.] Overall I would definitely come back although I wouldn't walk around here late nigh, or when it gets dark. The food is absolutely amazing!! Had goat and rice with sambusa!! Great fast friendly service! Yes it's a hole in the wall in the hood! You may not want to venture this way after sunset, but I highly recommend you try this place!! Parking is typically a hassle. 4 stars perhaps a bit high for such a dive/hole in the wall with limited parking in the hood...but the food and employees are definitely 5 stars. I just had lunch here for $6. Got myself a mound of well-seasoned rice with goat and a small salad. Banana and yummy drink to boot. I was really impressed with the flavor of the goat here--very tender as well. I'm nearly in a food coma, full of really delicious Somalian food. I come here for the "milk tea" which is some kind of chai. It's so soothing and delicious. I've also had a kind of doughnut thing (mildly sweet) that was tasty and freshly cooked, and also some kind of bean thing (a little spicy but not too much) that I don't know the name of, but the guy working there said it was like falafel.
