Call me a Luddite but I still prefer browsing through actual pulp-based paging rather than swiping left or right hoping against hope that I don't arouse the angry adtech gods who launch pop up ads with wild abandon every nanosecond or less. That said, NJM has always been a bit of a "light" read. Actual editorial has largely given way to a parade of lists which extoll the ranked preeminence of everything from delicatessens to undertakers and urologists who poke, probe and embalm their way around the Garden State. I get it, lists are easily digestible, and are catnip for newsstand browsers and advertisers alike. While they may be profitable I can't say it makes my browsing through the pages of "best Asian-Fusion pizzerias" and endless ads for upscale carpentry, dental implants and midlife crisis Botoxing fun or engaging - but if this is the cost of survival, as an outcast in the digital jungle, so be it. If a measly fifteen bucks a year is the ransom expected to NOT read every page on my smartphone wearing 6D goggles and Mark Zuckerberg leering over my shoulder trying to resell my marketing fingerprints to the highest bidder, please sign me up for another decade. Five stars for rowing against the tide. No goggles required.

City News doesn't have enough culinary emphasis to earn bodega status, but the vibe blurs the line a bit, including the late hours. It has your standard sodas and potato chips, but also some Indian snacks and Vinut juices from Vietnam. Picked up a Daily News, glad to see some newsprint when even some spots billed as newsstands ditched the paper game during Covid.

Yep that's main seller here and I have even hit a couple times here off a couple scratch offs. The guys in here are friendly enough but the hours aren't that of a say NY bodega and the selections are pretty limited for a bodega if you are coming for snacks and drinks. It's enough but when compared to what you'd expect from one along with your lottery tickets you'll be let down that said I'm glad it's stuck around a a staple in the neighborhood in the face of 7-11 and S. O. Pharmacy across the street.
