I didn't visit for a long tome amidst the pandemmy because they went drive thru only, which I get but also I live so close to here that just seemed so silly and wild to me to get in my car to wait in line for my favorite menu item (a red cow... vanilla ice cream and Big Red blended together to something a bit more sippable than a milkshake but thicker than just soda). But things opened back up and I got to go back to my walk-up ordering and getting a sweet treat. They have a great and large selection of sweet, frozen offerings, as well as some inexpensive and very not fancy savory fast food meal things (chicken sammie, burgers, fries, tenders). They ain't fancy, but they'll fill you up. I am happy to continue patronizing an established, old school neighborhood institution and intend to keep doing so. read more

Having to take the detour due to interstate I 65 being shut down we stopped at the Dairy Del. Plenty of parking, numerous outdoor tables, polite, efficient young staff and good ice cream made it a great stop on our way home from downtown. They have a large menu beyond ice cream, hot dogs, chili dogs, brats, French fries, tater tots, nachos, burgers... And of course all the ice cream selections you could ask for, Sundaes, shakes, floats, banana splits... Very laid back, outdoor, family friendly setting with a great menu at reasonable prices. Our visit made us so happy! It's hard to believe they didn't have a long line and full patio tables. Plus weather was on our side and the tables offered umbrellas and shade. I loved my orange sherbet and vanilla ice cream cone. The large is amazingly big! I love getting a chocolate and vanilla swirl ice cream cone with rainbow sprinkles. The staff is always friendly and service is quick. They've also got chili dogs and other food items. I've not tried them myself but I've heard good things from others. All of the food is inexpensive and you get a good amount for what you're paying. Pro tip: The small size ice cream is pretty huge. I really like Dairy Del! I'm more familiar with Dairy Kastle, but was glad to check this place out. They've got their own parking and even a drive thru! I came on a Tuesday early afternoon and I saw a few folks do drive thru and walk up to the window. It's got some of the same items as Dairy Kastle, except that they've got slushies and fried chicken sandwiches. I didn't see dairy free ice cream on the menu but I also didn't ask about it. If you are dairy free, slushies are a good option, along with some of the actual food choices. I got a blue raspberry slushie with cheese fries for all less than $5! My sister got a lemon lime slushie with the fried chicken sandwich. Also, less than $5! We didn't wait long for our stuff. Everything tasted great!! There are a few tables in front of it with umbrellas to shade you from the sun. They were also playing some great 80s music to set the vibes! Staff was friendly and must love it here! I will add that they didn't seem to have vegetarian alternatives like Dairy Kastle. You can always get cheese fries and such but there wasn't a veggie dog on the menu. Either way, both this place and Dairy Kastle are worth a visit! This place doesn't get as much of the hype as it should, but it's just as amazing as Dairy Kastle! read more

Have heard about this place on this app and people in general. My friend and I decided to come here for a dessert after eating pizza, lasagna, etc. There is a private parking lot and they had a quite a few spots open. However we parked on the street that we were still not at a very long distance to walk. There wasn't much of a crowd here on Saturday evening so, it didn't take long to place our order. I got the cookie sundae and my friend got a strawberry shake. It didn't take very long to get our orders either. We got to sit at a table by the establishment since there as quite a bit of seating available. They have so much more than ice cream, shakes etc., they do have food there too and hopefully will get to try their food next visit, yes do plan on returning again before summer is over. Classic cones, flurries, slushies....They even have food items like chicken tenders and hot dogs. And everything is dirt cheap. I love it. What I really, really love is that their ice cream is soft and creamy...you know..the best kind. There are different toppings, syrups and things that can be mixed in, too. The people who work here are super nice, and surprisingly they take cards, which is always nice for someone like me, who literally never carries a dollar around. Walk up windows where you (at one time, more on that below) place your order after looking over a long list of shakes, sundaes, and treats. Outdoor tables with umbrellas right next to the sidewalk. Ice cream? Excellent! Food? Mixed bag. What I tried wasn't consistent with the Germantown Brat pretty meh but the fries were on-point. Ordering is kind of a hassle right now. Those walk up windows aren't for ordering, only food pick up. Ordering is done by standing in the drive-thru lane. With the cars. Not great. Vegan soft serve is slowly coming to Louisville, and Dairy Del has it. The day I ventured over, their flavors included pumpkin and caramel, which I obviously chose to swirl together into a confection not dissimilar to pumpkin pie. Taste: fantastic. The pumpkin was clearly pumpkin, and the caramel was sweet, with a hint of salt and butteriness (quite the feat when you're making vegan soft serve). Consistency: erm. Not so creamy, more crystalized than I would have preferred, sort of like a quick-frozen sorbet. Not bad, but not like ice cream. Service: delightful. The gentleman working that evening was polite, helpful, and knew when to ask for help ("Can we make a vegan pumpkin Oreo flurry?") The answer was yes. My hope is that as vegan soft serve becomes more mainstream (I have very high hopes), Dairy Del will perfect the process. I'm willing to give them that chance. read more

I recently visited Dairy Del for the first time and it was great! When we were heading there, we were worried there wouldn't be much parking. To our surprise, there was! They also had a little drive thru made up, and a large menu for you to look at. They weren't taking orders at the front window, it was drive thru only, but that was totally fine with us! I ordered chocolate ice cream with cookie dough and my husband ordered a chocolate milkshake. The ice cream was smooth and creamy, and the milkshake was thick, but not so thick that it was hard to drink. We really enjoyed what we ordered! Our pups were also given little ice cream cups free of charge, and they loved them! I look forward to more trips to Dairy Del, and trying new things there! read more
