I just learned that Dairy Queen closed all their branches in Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. What a pity! Nothing can be better than an ice cream after driving several hours through the desert in triple-digit heat at 3 p.m. Baker is a town in the middle of nowhere, on the trip from LA to Las Vegas. The town only has several gas stations and some fast food. I drove into a Shell station to fill up my tank, and there was a giant chair between the Dairy Queen and the gas station shop. I put the gas pump nozzle into the tank, then walked into Dairy Queen and ordered a Mint Oreo Blizzard. I waited for a while. There were only two staff members in the restaurant, with only one preparing food, and there was another customer in front of me. The room had a strange odor. I got my Blizzard after the staff flipped the cup. Back in the 1990s, when I first encountered Dairy Queen in Shanghai, I was really impressed by this flipping idea. I sat beside the giant chair eating my Blizzard. Suddenly, a group of senior Chinese people appeared. They all walked into the gas station shop. What had happened? I saw them walk out through the shop's side door and then realized there were two toilets behind the giant chair, with a tourist bus parked nearby. The Blizzard was way too sweet and lacked the cool refreshing touch that mint should provide. I guess I won't have Dairy Queen again in the near future.

TLDR: The one place in Baker California that I actually enjoy visiting. Solid food at a stop that is essentially in the middle of nowhere. Burgers, fried food, and ice cream. What's not to like? Chocolate brownie extreme blizzard: It's chocolate ice cream layered with brownie bits and chocolate shells. It's a hard combination to beat. The blizzard's integrity stays strong for 15-20 minutes after purchase and it stays even longer if untouched. Burgers: I've had the double bacon burger here, and it gives a very fast food vibe. It's what you'd expect from a fast food burger than a good way to bridge your hunger while on your roadtrip. Sides: Cheese curds, Onion rings, and fries. They're all standard fast food stuff. Don't expect gourmet, because you won't get it. Expect what a city fast food will give you, and you'll never be disappointed. Ambiance: It's a sizable store with ample seating. Expect a decent amount of foot traffic because it is a stop in the middle of two 50-80 mile stretches. Service: It's standard fast food service. There was a time though that the store closed earlier than the listed time. I'm not sure if it's still the case, but I didn't like being excited for DQ with 30 minutes to spare in their operating hours and being welcomed with a closed store.

Customer service was nice and the restaurant was clean. Came in to pick up some quick food for my kids on our way to Vegas. The chicken tenders and fries were actually pretty surprisingly good. The cheeseburger was ok. Convenient stop since the gas station is right there as well as the Tesla charging station. Good experience coming here!

Stopped to charge and use the restroom. The DQ is right next to the bathroom so I thought I would try their frozen dessert (it is 105 degrees outside so something cold is very tempting). I got a small soft serve with sprinkles - $7.53. For a small! Yes it was cold and sweet - but not even real ice cream. Not a great value.

Cup sized sundae for $11? This is a crappy Shell station in Baker, CA. You'd expect these at an airport, not here...

Skip this place. We stopped to charge our car next to this Shell Station and the prices at the Dairy Queen and quickie mart inside we're absurd. Single burger small combo was $12 and a 32 ounce fountain drink was $4.30! Resist fascist price gouging! And fascists!

Size of a small vs. a tiny drink cup. Probably 2-2.5x the volume
    Thomas L.

Power tip: no Buster Bar? That's almost unAmerican :\ Got a Blizzard instead. $9.99 for a small. Probably should do the mini to cut down on the calories

    Receipt for ice cream.

Watch out! This place automatically charges a 20% tip without your authorization! My sister was mad as heck!

Not worth the stop. Prices are almost double other locations, and it's hard to read. Burger was clearly reheated in the microwave.

$10.99 for a medium oreo blizzard, back home it's like $7. Prices definitely way over priced on certain things.

Food is decent but it's sooo overpriced. Last time we were here, we paid $36 for 2 burgers, a small fry and small onion ring order. Whoa.

We grabbed two burgers with the zucchini fries, and they did not disappoint. I'm obsessed with their gyro burger -- so flavorful and perfectly seasoned. My husband loves the pastrami one and says it's one of the best he's had on the road. The zucchini fries are a great twist and we always end up fighting over the last few. The lady working the register was super friendly and great with us. The place wasn't packed at all during the weekday, so the ambience felt relaxed and comfortable. Bonus highlight: they have the cutest pet cats that my daughters absolutely love watching through the window. It's the easiest (and most entertaining) distraction to keep the kids happy while we wait for our food! If you're driving through Baker, do yourself a favor and stop here. Solid food, friendly service, and a fun little vibe. We'll definitely be back on our next trip!

This morning, we were on the road earlier than usual, so I called at 7:46 AM hoping to place an order for pickup at 8:00 AM when they opened. The employee who answered sounded annoyed and immediately told me I had to call back at 8:00 AM to place the order. As someone who works in the restaurant industry, I understand policies and operating procedures. However, if staff are already in the building answering the phone, taking an order a few minutes early for pickup after opening seems like a simple way to provide good customer service and retain loyal customers. Instead, the interaction felt dismissive and unwelcoming. In today's economy, customer service and repeat business matter. Because of the experience, I chose not to stop, didn't charge my Tesla there as planned, and took my business elsewhere. It's unfortunate because this was a place I regularly visited and recommended during my trips.

This is the home to the world's largest thermometer and Alien Fresh Jerky. I cannot begin to tell you how many times I have driven past this place but never stopped. Now, I like aliens just as much as the next guy, but it was one of those places that I really had no reason to top of. But let me tell you, I am so glad that I did. In addition to having probably the largest selection of beef jerky next to buc-ee's, this place has more alien stuff than you can shake a stick at. Honestly, this place really does look like it belong on the Vegas strip with its big LED signs and alien motif all throughout the exterior. Additionally, they are in the process of building a UFO hotel. I'm going to tell you this. I will be there as one of the first guests in line when this thing opens up. Let's talk about the jerky for a second, they're not kidding when they say it's fresh. I have purchased multiple bags here on multiple occasions, and I got to tell you this is some of the best beef jerky you can ask for. It's super tasty, and not like that really nasty hard stuff you buy out of gas station convenience store, this stuff really is fresh. I don't know how to quantify alien fresh, but this jerky iis probably some of the best I've ever had. Tons of different flavors and heat levels for every person's taste. Bottom line? This place Is definitely the place to stop when you're out on the road going to or from Las Vegas from Orange county. Honestly, It's a perfect pit stop.

Unfortunately, the customer service has declined tremendously and has become borderline rude. During our visit today, our daughters wanted to use the souvenir penny machine, but it took their money and wasn't working. When I politely mentioned it to the cashier, "Vicky," her response was simply, "Yeah, it's broken," with no apology or concern at all. I suggested they may want to put up a sign so other customers don't lose money, and she just shrugged and tossed our purchased items toward us before dismissing us. It was a really disappointing experience, especially at a place we've enjoyed for so many years. Sadly, this will probably be our last stop here.
