We always make it a point to stop at The Mad Greek Cafe in Baker when we're driving to Vegas. It's become a family tradition at this point! We grabbed two burgers with the zucchini fries, and they did not disappoint. I'm obsessed with their gyro burger -- so flavorful and perfectly seasoned. My husband loves the pastrami one and says it's one of the best he's had on the road. The zucchini fries are a great twist and we always end up fighting over the last few. The lady working the register was super friendly and great with us. The place wasn't packed at all during the weekday, so the ambience felt relaxed and comfortable. Bonus highlight: they have the cutest pet cats that my daughters absolutely love watching through the window. It's the easiest (and most entertaining) distraction to keep the kids happy while we wait for our food! If you're driving through Baker, do yourself a favor and stop here. I've stopped here many times over the years whenever I'm driving between Las Vegas and California. I've always considered myself a loyal customer, which is why today's experience was disappointing. This morning, we were on the road earlier than usual, so I called at 7:46 AM hoping to place an order for pickup at 8:00 AM when they opened. The employee who answered sounded annoyed and immediately told me I had to call back at 8:00 AM to place the order. As someone who works in the restaurant industry, I understand policies and operating procedures. However, if staff are already in the building answering the phone, taking an order a few minutes early for pickup after opening seems like a simple way to provide good customer service and retain loyal customers. Instead, the interaction felt dismissive and unwelcoming. In today's economy, customer service and repeat business matter. Because of the experience, I chose not to stop, didn't charge my Tesla there as planned, and took my business elsewhere. Always driven by here and finally made a stop. You can't miss their billboards, along 15 freeway that advertise their famous real strawberry shake. The strawberry shake IS GOOD and they have some other shake options which I think would also be good as well. We did try the date and it was also very good. On my way back to Las Vegas after going to the Universal Fan Fest on Friday evening, my husband and I stopped by The Mad Greek for lunch, on a Saturday morning around 10:15 A.M. We had been on the road for a few hours and wanted to get something to eat! The last time I visited the Mad Greek was about 20 years ago, on my way to Anaheim to visit the ADP HQ. It was good back then, and the food is still great! As soon as you walk inside the restaurant, you'll notice how spacious it is. There was table seating inside the restaurant in various locations. There is now self service kiosks where you can place your order, but there was also a team member at the register taking orders too. Their menu has changed though since I last visited. There are a lot more options you can choose from such as Breakfast items: Burritos, quesadillas and more! Hamburgers/Cheeseburgers Sandwiches (Patty Melt, BLT, Grilled cheese..) Salads Milkshakes and so much more! We decided to try the following Beef & Lamb Gyro Meal Combo - Rice/Drink Chicken Souviaki - with hummus, no tomatoes and with Feta Fries/Drink. The team member provided us with a buzzer which would let us know when the meal was ready. It was beautiful weather outside, around 80, so we ended up waiting outside at a table while our meal was getting prepared! We didn't wait too long either, about 10 minutes for the meal. It was pretty quick! My Chicken Souviaki included two skewers with lettuce and onions. The hummus was in a cup, so I was able to add as much of the hummus to the wrap as I needed. The hummus was more like a thin sauce though. It was still yummy! The chicken was quite flavorful and tender. I enjoyed the wrap. The Feta Fries though were super scrumptious! There was so much feta cheese on the Fries! I ended up dipping the French Fries into the hummus sauce! The French Fries were crunchy and just perfect! My husband and I ended up splitting the Feta Fries. I also had a chance to try out the rice, which was good, but I did like the Feta Fries better. We spent less than 30 minutes inside the restaurant, and then was back on the road to Las Vegas! The team members were helpful and friendly. The food was great. The portions are pretty large, but the price is also quite steep. I get it...there aren't many options, so they will command the higher price. Overall, the experience was good. Stopped by Baker again on our way home to Pomona from Vegas this afternoon. This time we tried The Mad Greek. Plenty of seating, clean bathrooms, easy ordering of food on touchscreens, my husband ordered the beef gyro wrap and I just needed a beverage (still full from the buffets at the Paris Las Vegas conference). Pretty good Mediterranean place as a quick pit stop lunch toward Vegas if coming from SoCal! My husband and I were pretty hungry and decided to get their gyros here. We both had their beef/lamb gyros and also their zucchini sticks. The gyros were filled with lots of meat and came with packets of tzatziki sauce which was nice. They were good and fresh. A little pricey but fresh. We loved the baklava milkshake with whipped cream ($7.99) - I wish I had one right now. The large Greek salad (entree sized, $16.99 + $5.00 to add the beef & lamb gyro = $21.99) was fine. A small Greek salad was $11.99 (no meat). Both salad sizes came with a dolma. A falafel and tahini appetizer with fresh pita was good and was $9.49. A regular (~12 oz?) soda was $3.99. I don't know if I need to ever stop here again but it was clean and kind of amusing. Great little stop at The Mad Greek on our way to Vegas. After some time on the road, this was the perfect place to stop, take a breather, have a bite, then head on back on the road. Arrived at around 7pm after a treacherous few hours in holiday rainy weather up the Cajon pass. The staff were super sweet and kind when we took some extra time to look at the menu. The decor in this place was super cute and kitschy. Blue and white colors and Greek statues covered the place which was totally fun. They also had lots of grinch decor up for the holiday which was adorable. For food, we grabbed two gyros and some feta fries. I love a gyro, but the fries were the ultimate star of this meal. Found this place as we were heading to Vegas. Driving in late and so happy when we saw they were open late in the middle of nowhere and it wasn't just fast food. Spacious place and was super clean. Stopped here after camping for a quick lunch. The self-ordering was quick and easy. The Beef & Lamb Gyro is super tasty, love it. The Zucchini sticks are cooked perfectly, but needed a little salt. Dipping in Tzatziki sauce was fine but not as good as ranch would have been. The Falafel Wrap was good, tasty and filling. It comes with a tahini sauce and that was very good, but could stand a bit more garlic. The French fries were the absolute winner of the lunch though. This is definitely one of the places I really don't understand all the bad ratings because personally I LOVE The Mad Greek going to and from Vegas. Their fries are absolutely delicious! They are definitely some of my favorite fries anywhere. The strawberry shake is scrumptious too with all the fresh strawberries in it. The lamb and beef gyro is a favorite of mine and after living in Israel for 6 months I am definitely picky when it comes to good Mediterranean food. The fact that they have Baklava is a win for me too, since that isn't something you can just get anywhere. For those less adventurous the Burgers are good too! There's always plenty of seating and parking every time I have been. The dining area and bathrooms are kept pretty much spotless. All my interactions with the staff have been good as well. Not sure why there's a few negative reviews for this place I've been here a few times coming to or from Vegas to or from California. The fries here are really good as are the strawberry shakes (some of the things we constantly return for) the burgers aren't bad and they have Pepsi products which is always a positive for me. They have all kinds of treats like baklava and "Greek food" which I haven't explored too much but it is an option. Zucchini were good the first time I visited, both times the only things that lasted long enough for a pic were the drinks lol Staff was friendly and service was quick. Their ordering kiosks are simple to use but, if you should have trouble with them, a friendly employee is there to help. We ordered beef and lamb gyros. Years ago there were gyros plate meals available on the menu but it is now just the sandwich alone. The gyros were generously portioned with plenty of meat and veggies in the flatbread. Tasty as well. The tomatoes, onions, and lettuce were fresh. With a combo meal, there is a choice of a side and a beverage. The tzatziki, despite coming in a bag, was fresh, slightly tart, and seasoned well with dill. The rice tasted slightly buttery and savory. It was very good for something made using converted rice instead of a typical grain. Delicious! Zucchini sticks were thin, crispy, and cooked well. They were delicious dipped in tzatziki. The walnut and pistachio baklavas had delicate phyllo layers. The filling was so finely minced it resembled a paste. The flavors in the filling were more intense than the usual baklava. These would be a great accompaniment with a cup of strong, brewed coffee. Parking is plentiful in their many parking areas. The restaurant interior could benefit from a more powerful AC. It was 94 degrees Fahrenheit outside and just as warm in certain areas of the dining room. It was a matter of finding the right ceiling vent to sit under. There is an adjacent catio area where you can see their outdoor kittens relaxing. Staff is friendly and helpful if there are questions regarding the food. Other staff members maintain the dining areas efficiently to keep everything tidy. I ate here one time probably over 10 years ago and had been meaning to come back again on one of our Las Vegas/California trips. We finally made it here this past weekend. Very different than my first experience - very busy last time and I remembered I liked their gyros. This time, it was not busy inside at all. I did appreciate the kiosks so that I could explore the menu and make my selections at my own pace, and the staff member at the counter was available to answer our questions. I appreciated her helpfulness snd friendliness. When our food came out, although the gyro meat tasted good, I just felt like it was missing something and the gyro overall tasted plain. The salad dressing and tzatziki sauces were also in sealed pouches, so I didn't really know if it was made fresh or how old it was. The prices were high, although this was expected. There were also random bugs (beetles) walking around the dining area floor, not sure if that's normal for the area but not used to seeing them inside dining establishments. I guess I'm glad they weren't cockroaches? Fries were good. So if you've never been you're not missing out on the jerky these days so just go straight to the Mad Greek and you will be glad you did. I've never really ventured into other menu items since I love their gyros but In my experience of ordering the Gyro and the salads, the food here has never lost a step. Recently they've even added to their menu, showing the ability to innovate and stay current. What did I order? The Gyro. 5/5 stars French fries 4/5 stars I love how the ownership has not tampered with portions and the quality still remains to be One of the best Gyros standing shoulder to shoulder with some of the best gyros you might find in SF or Portlands street food scene. Parking is pretty easy with on site parking. You'll enter the double doors and place your order at the register also there's a convenient kiosk with touch screen to place your order. Once you have your buzzer, you'll find a seat which is typically pretty easy. The casual diner ambiance is really nothing special, Self serve water station and decent restrooms. You'll enter will not be impressing any date here nor will the food plating be a picturesque instagram op haha. Whizzing in our mobile conveyance from Vegas to LA we were starved by the time we reached Baker. Inside an array of order screens great the visitor. Here you enter your order and pay. A buzzer is handed to you. The first buzz is for your shake. The second buzz is for your food. The falafel pita has 4 patties that are much darker than I expected, wedged by tomato, lettuce and onions. The other dish we ordered was the veggie quesadillas. Each dish comes with a sauce, both sauces are spicy. The food is mediocre at best, but you're in the middle of nowhere. The best thing is the strawberry shake. Clean and friendly service!! It gets packed tho because it's one of the few restaurants to and from Vegas to LA/SoCal. You order at the counter and pick up ur food when the buzzer rings. Theyre known for their gyros and shakes. Chicken in the chicken gyro was a bit dry but the sauce made it super delicious!!! Beef/lamb was much better than the chicken gyro imo but both were good. The gyros are HUGE. Pita bread was lightly seasoned and really good too (included with the gyros) Got grilled cheese combo for the kids which had seasoned fries that were fried to perfection! But the Gyro that is the most popular item was bland, only a couple slivers of onion and 3 tiny itty bitty slices of tomato the size and shape of a .25 cent quarter and a little bit of shredded lettuce you'd put on a taco was sprinkled underneath . I was super disappointed after so many years wanting to go here... I mean it did fill me up, but every generic Greek cafe place I've tried blows this place away. I don't know man, but to me, it was outstanding. Highly recommend. - Fried Zucchini. Thin slices of zucchini, light battered and crispy. Loved this, coming from a picky fried zucchini person. - Baklava. Super sweet and flaky layers with sticky syrup. This is best to share with someone since it's so sweet. THE DRINKS. - Iced Tea. Straightforward, I added sugar to cut through the bitterness. - Date Shake. I liked the sweetness from the dates, but it was a little too milky for me. They added a whole date on top which was a nice touch. THE VIBE. Themed with Greek statutes and white columns throughout the interior and exterior spaces. It feels a little out of place knowing you're in the middle of the desert, but it's been there for so long (50 years), so it's part of the desert family now. Mad Greek has great options for vegetarians. We got the falafel wrap, zucchini fries and a side of spicy hummus and ranch. The wrap was very delicious! I normally hate zucchini but these fries might just change my mind about them! They were almost 90% dehydrated and then fried, which gave it a good vegetable feel to it still while trying the fries and yet not let the juice come in the way. Only reason for 4 star is the service took long too despite not being too crowded and while they have Greek ambiance, it didn't look too well kempt.
